Had this on tap at the anniversary of Bailey's Taproom in summer of 2009. The colour was very dark brown with a very thin tan edge. The aroma was kind of a musty brown sugar with hops as well. On the palate there was scads and scads of hops that were a bit overwhelming for me ( and I'm a bit of a hop head). It's as though there wasn't anything else to balance the hops. Odd.

Thanks, Brian. This the the 2012 vintage, released early 2013?

Pouring black with no head, this beer has nice reddish brown highlights. The nose is boozy, chocolatey decadence. Plenty of malt is present - malted milk balls, some cheerios, A little bit of buttery oak, a surprisingly light fruity character - sultana raisins, a touch of pear cider? Sugar cookies with a touch of burnt sugar are also present on the nose. The cacao nibs add a rather fatty chocolate aroma, making me wonder if this was best fresh.

The palate opens moderately sweet with sugar cookies, chocolate, brown sugar, a little burnt sugar and even some butterscotch? Caramel sauce, chocolate pecan cookies, and a moderate oak presence are noted. There's something about the bourbon presence here, the way it blends with the oak and cacoa nibs, that make the body fuller than it is, and lends an oiliness to the palate. Vinous in ways, especially in the fruitiness. The bourbon character itself is sweet with burnt sugar, toffee and an almond like nuttiness. Full in body with a boozy finish thats got a little oaky astringency, chocolate and bourbon, this beer is solid. Carbonation is light, appropriately so, but I have to admit the fattiness of the palate does bother me some. It makes me think of the buttery, oaky character of a Chardonnay but in an imperial stout and it doesn't wholly work.

Appearance- Received with about a finger's worth of head which recedes fairly quickly. The head is a medium beige with a dirty hue to it. The body is an opaque, pitch chocolate black. I would guess that this beer isn't leaving any lacing. (It doesn't.)

Nose- I can already tell this is going to be a really interesting beer. Starts off with this almost searing formic acid note that has faint wine notes in the background. This mellows out and shows big notes of bittersweet chocolate, coconut, caramel, vanilla, and toffee. Even a touch of truffles? Some cherry, some raisins. If the flavor profile is anything close, it is going to be quite enjoyable.

Taste- Huge amounts of chocolate that quickly moves into fudge brownie, cherries, some macaroons. This runs the gamut of chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, toffee, and slight truffles. Raisins as well. Chocolate and cherry are the dominant notes with some roasted, bitter malt notes sitting in the background. Hints of oak but nothing that is too oaky. Definite bourbon but there isn't really any heat. There is the suggestion of heat but it really is the bourbon notes instead of actual heat. Some coffee but it's pretty light. It's really all about deep and bitter chocolate with notes of cherries and other red fruits. Somewhat of a vinous character. This is pretty much a really good to great beer. It's not a Parabola, KBS, or BCBS but it's in the tier below those. I was thinking at first that it might need some age but it's pretty close to perfect at the moment. It's incredibly close to being a great beer and I'm not sure what would push it into that class. Maybe some coconut? Some more coconut would be good.

Mouthfeel- A little more than medium bodied and usually I would consider this a little thin for an imperial stout, but the carbonation is very light and there is a grittiness that gives this beer a little more structure that makes it seem thicker.

Drinkability- Very dangerous beer. Almost none of the 11% shows- the bourbon aspects simply suggest it. I think it's a steal at 4.50 an 8 oz pour on tap. I would definitely get this again. Heat does start to show itself after a while.

Overall- Really good to great beer that is closer to great than really good. Just lacks those extra special notes that distinguish it from those that vie for the top. A must try and something I will be seeking out when it's released in bottle form. A definite treat.
