Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to khumbard for this. The cork on this was horrible and broke at two points while I fought to get it out.

3.25 A: Dark brown color. Just under one finger of frothy/fizzy beige head that falls quickly and leaves no lacing.

4.25 S: I didn't realize this was a sour until right now. Not what I was expecting, but I'm not unhappy about it since it smells great. Subtle acetic acid with more emphasis on a tangy lactic acid component. Brown sugar, caramel, quince, and chocolate. Notes of plum and purple grape. Funk is fruity and earthy, but not too powerful. The barrel is used perfectly for this beer. The bourbon complements lightly without interfering with the base beer's aromas. Light leather and earthiness with vanilla and oak notes.

4.25 T: The taste is a lot more "wild" than the nose suggests. This isn't to say this is overly sour because it isn't, but I was expecting mild sourness and I got moderate. Lots of tanginess in here in the form of fruity raisin, not quite ripe plum, quince, crab apple, and white grape. Brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, and maybe a hint of molasses. Again the bourbon is subtly complementary. Light earth and leather, but stronger vanilla and oak.

4.25 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good moderate carbonation with a pleasant spritzy creaminess. Supremely smooth. Great here.

4.5 D: This is a great beer without really any problems.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber body with a khaki head. Settles to nothing. A thin collar.

Smell - Bourbon comes through and lots of caramel and vanilla. Red wine notes and other dark fruits. Nice acidity.

Taste - Follows the smell. Bourbon blends nicely. Deep caramel and a rising acidity. Vanilla and bourbon linger on the palate.

Mouthfeel - Way overcarbonated. Medium heavy body. I think this could be much better with lesscarbonation.

Overall - Excellent flavors. The bourbon blends very well. Just too carbonated.

As described by Belmont Station: "Brewed by Block 15 this amazing beer is a strong Scottish Ale matured in 15 year Pappy Van Winkle Barrels and blended with 11% Oud Bruin aged for 2 years in Bourbon barrels and 11% Oud Bruin aged for 9 months in Bourbon barrels."

The description calls the beer a "strong Scottish Ale", but this has more in common with Flanders Oud Bruin's I've had than any Scottish Ale I've yet to come across. For that reason I skipped over the American Strong Ale and Scottish Ale categories and settled on the Flanders listing for reviewing the beer.

A: Chocolate milk brown in the glass and cloudy as hell. I expect that's due to the sediment and yeast in the keg being kicked up a bit. It's likely that will subside in the bottle version if allowed to settle before pouring. A thick foamy tan head sits atop the liquid and needs to be poured in parts by the bartender to allow a full glass. Some spotty lacing.

S: Excellent quality bourbon is instantly appreciated now that I've allowed it to warm (I highly recommend doing this). Some caramel sweetness, vanilla, cherries, and almond let the barrel character be known. Light vinegar makes its presence but never gets in the way of the Pappy.

T: Again the bourbon is omnipresent and up-front but not over-powering. Good warmth and peppery spice can be picked up and those magical -bals do their thing. I'm typically disappointed when a Flanders doesn't have any blue cheese funk and while faint, this one has it almost as an ethereal quality on the swallow. Light sourness, light cherries, and light vinegar are exceptionally well balanced.

M: Silky smooth, clean finishing, and softly carbonated. What more could you ask for?

O: I typically prefer lower alcohol Flanders' and have yet to enjoy one of this strength. Off flavors such as acetone and copper run rampant through Dissident, Kuhnhenn's Oud Bruin, and Aardmonik. None of those have been to my liking. Not picking up those undesirables here. By a ridiculously wide margin, this is the best Oud Bruin (if you care to call it that, I do) I've yet to have. Highly recommended and worthy.

Appearance: (4.5)

- Pours a nice super dark malty looking Scottish, like a root beer. The tan fingers of thick foam stick around, and settle to an everlasting thin pillow with fluffy lace all about. Really a pretty beer.

Smell: (4.5)

- Nice tart and sour aromas. Nice oak aromas, vanilla, currants, and much like a splash of a fine port wine. Nice blended grain and malt sweetness as well. The tart and hint of funk really makes my mouth water.

Taste: (4.0)

- Love the tartness in the brew. Subtle currants, fruits, and grassy notes. I served this out of my cellar, so it is warmed up a bit. Light malt sweetness, hints of vanilla and oak, and a little tobacco. The more prominent flavor though seems to be it's soured tart flare and perhaps some herbal and grassy hops which are light. Overall great but I am sure would get better over time.

Mouth Feel: (4.0)

- Nice smooth medium body, creamy almost from its fine and abundant carbonation. Not at all sticky, but only a touch drying, which balances its mouth watering tartness. Little chewy.

Overall: (4.0)

- Nice solid beer. It only gets slightly lower marks than near perfect because its flavor seems to lack the depth and complexity of some others of the style. It is a stellar and solid beer don't get me wrong, and i am sure it would develop more over time. I need to get more of it. Overall nice and easy to drink, like a fine wine. Block 15 beers are always amazing.

I had this at the November Baltimore BA tasting. Served from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy mahogany with hardly any head to speak of.

Smell: There is quite a lot of sweetness here. The first thing I'm noticing is the malt sweetness and some dark fruit notes. There is a red berry like tartness throughout.

Taste: The taste has a lot more tartness to it than I expected from the smell. I'm getting some vinegar along with the red berries from the smell. There is a malt sweetness under the tart notes along with some dark fruit.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with carbonation that I would describe as smooth and full. The finish is dry but not overly so.

Overall: I thought this was a nice dark sour beer. There was no unpleasant undertone which I find with a lot of darker sour beers. Just enough sweetness to balance things out a bit. I'd have more.

Big thanks to boralyl for sending this bottle out my way! Really enjoying the Block 15 beers that I've had. Served in a cervoise. Nice dark fruit and fairly-heavy acidity. Touch of chocolate. Pretty good complexity and reminds me quite a bit of what Veritas 009 was initially like, though this has some additional carbonation.

Cask version is aged with fresh cherries and cocoa nibs in the firkin.

Dark brown, neat black with no head, just a thin ring of light tan bubbles around the rim.

Strong notes of bourbon and lightly tart cherries upfront. Light complimentary notes of cocoa.

Bourbon, caramel, vanilla oak first with faintly tart cherries coming through a strong second. Very light warming sensation from the bourbon.

Smooth medium body, very low carbonation.

Top-notch bourbon notes blend well with the lightly tart cherry notes.

.750 corked + caged. Chilled in fridge, then poured into a HoTD tulip. Big up to my OR connect.

A: A magnificent 3cm head forms from moderately aggressive pour. As the beer calms the Co2 bubbles shrink and form a ring around the glass. The beer is very responsive to agitation but Co2 bubbles quickly dissipate to form a ring. No lacing effect, and no creators (not expected anyway) The color of this beer is a dark walnut brown, dark sappy amber with slightly reddish tinged hue.

S: initial waft is of sour cherry pie. acidic vinegar toned nutty chocolate notes.

T: bursts of flavors identical to the smell. First I'm tasting the sour cherry followed by a sweet nutty flavor. The back end of this beer has undertones of chocolate, I am attributing this to the bourbon barrels.

M: light, smooth-perfect carbonation level for this type of beer. Crisp/dry for minutes after.

O: Block 15 nailed this down from every angle. I absolutely loved this beer because it is easy drinking, high alcohol with no sign of it, perfect bourbon qualities added to the flavors to make it taste more like a sour nutty Black Forest cake! I think the bourbon qualities truly shine on the back end and only in positive ways. 2 other beers that immediately come to mind that taste similar are supplication, and winter woods. This beer definitely surpasses them!!!!

On cask at Belmont Station.

Like the draft version, the beer pours a fairly dark brown color, but with light lacing and not much retention. The nose is also similar to the draft version, but I picked up far less of the sour funk tartness, and more chocolate. The flavor profile replicates the nose, except one really picks up a lot of chocolate on the palate. There is enough tartness to keep the beer from coming across as overly sweet, but it's nothing like the presence it is in the draft version. The bourbon seemed to be less noticeable as well. Mouthfeel is where the cask version really shines, and the beer is soft, full and even creamy. The alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile, which enhances this beer's drinkability.

The cask version is still quite good, but I thought the draft version was more complex and fun to drink. Either way, the beer was good enough that I felt it necessary to pick up a couple bottles at the bottle shop afterwards.

A - Pours a dark brown with a very thin dark tan head that moves to the edges quickly.

S - Sweet dark fruit, cherry, and some wood.

T - Tart wood tones dominate, dark cherry, sweet frutis.

D - Lower carbonation with a medium to heavy body. A tart and sweet finish.

O - I was dissapointed in this one. Tart and almost to the point it was sour. Some dark fruit did help, but I was hoping for more influence from the Pappy barrels.

A: Dark reddish brown with an inch of beige froth.

S: Strong vinegar aroma with notes of currant, grape, dark cherry, brown sugar, plum, and oak. Traces of vanilla blend with bourbon and chocolate. Touch of acetone.

T: Firm tartness with expressive lactic notes. Lots of chocolate and dark fruit, currant, grape, and plum. Strong tannic presence with grape skin and bourbon. Moderate acetic acidity with unrestrained but not inappropriate vinegar notes. Tannic dark fruit finish. Bourbon is light throughout.

M: Medium body with lower high carbonation.

Overall: I've found myself moving away from dark sours over the last few years, but this is still a nice beer and recommended if you're a fan of the style.

Pours a rich cloudy mahogany, brownish head that's thin but pretty attractive.

Smells of tartness, bourbon, caramel and chocolate.

Wow, taste is surprising. Pretty crazy mix of sweet bourbon inflected caramel maltiness and sour vinegary Flanders Red character...never had anything quite like this, great stuff.

Good creamy mouthfeel, good carbonation, very rich flavors but still pretty drinkable.

The most pleasant surprise of the night and one of the best of the tasting.

Poured into a Bruery snifter.

A - a deep, dark cloudy brown body with a foamy light tan head.

S - this is interesting - first up is some vanilla and a hint of bourbon and oak, but then I pick up on some raspberries and cherries, along with some funk.

T - just as the aroma suggested, this starts off with some vanilla sweetness and a tiny hint of bourbon and oak, but it's then dominated by the sour fruitiness. Raspberries and citrus flavors dominate this brew, leaving the bourbon and vanilla flavors as afterthoughts.

M - high carbonation and medium body again point in the direction of a wild ale. Gonna let this one warm up a bit in the hopes of extracting some more of those bourbon flavors.

O - a very enjoyable beer that is quite interesting. A fine example of what happens with two styles of beer are successfully combined.

Bottle shared by Thorpe, thanks. Beer served in a snifter. Beer is brown with a wispy head of small tan bubbles, low retention, low lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is figgy and mildly sour.

The bourbon comes through and it is also sour on the end, some brettish feel in the mouth and the finish is a little dry. The beer is sweet overall and nice. Anyway, in the end it was wierd and fine but I won't have this again.

Thanks to Kan for sharing this one. Served in a Russian River tulip.

A - Dark tan foam settles to a thick collar and partial cap, but minimal lacing. Dark and murky red-brown body.

S - Funky brett, vanilla, dark fruits, vinegar, mild lactic sourness, and strong spicy oak and bourbon.

T - Taste has a lot of oak as well, but not as much overt bourbon character. Malt character has held up, with chocolate, nuts and some vinous and mildly vinegary dark fruits. Definitely in the Flanders Oud Bruin mold.

M - Medium body, chewy texture, medium-low carbonation, and a dry finish. Alcohol is well-hidden; didn't realize this was 9%.

D - I think Golden Canary was a lot stronger, although I'm not always a huge fan of dark sours. Nice complexity and variety of flavors, although the preponderance of oak is more of an American wild characteristic than a Flanders one.

The beer is chestnut brown with a thin, beige head. The aroma brings malt, booze, oak, tannins. Wild yeast with a touch of fruit and a tannic bourbon character. Medium bodied with a lingering sweetness. Alcohol presence throughout. Overall, this was pretty good.

750ml bottle picked up at Belmont Station.

A: Muddy brown with very little lacing.

N: Prominent bourbon with vanilla, coconut, caramel. There's some butter and acetone flows here, though it could be the oud bruin, too. Lots of toffee sweetness from the Scotch.

T: Mixture of sweet and sour, with the tartness overtaking the rest as it warms. Acetone, toffee, caramel, cherry, oak.

M: Decent mouthfeel if on the lighter side from the sour ales.

O: There's an interesting trend towards the mixture of sours and heavily malted beers. Certainly a successful attempt for those interested in the combination. Recommended if you enjoyed Collage.
