Can: Served ice cold on a boat just off the beach in Varadero. Beautiful surrounding, nice sunshine and good music. What more could I ask for… well a better beer then this for a start. Bland lager with some fizzyness and a watery finish. Taste like a bland macro lager and is easily forgettable.

Gift from my buddy Bill from Italy. The label was different than the one picuted. I was having a mexican style shrimp cocktail and wanted a pilsner and this was all I had in the fridge. Poured a bit darker than most macro lagers with some pleasant malt and slight hop bitterness. Slight skunkiness but the brown bottle may have helped hold this off. Anyone can guess what it tastes like and it was a cut above most but it serves its purpose. Can't wait to taste this at the source one day.

This was a required purchase in Florence, Italy, bottle collectors can understand that - Cuban beer is not imported to this country as far as I know. Fortunately it was only €1.55, about $1.50. Very weak, insipid, lacking any real flavor, worse than the majors here, similar to a Corona. Serious U.S. beer drinkers are not missing anything.

Although a Cuban will tell you different. I like the Mayabe. Its lighter than a Cristal but its also a few pesos cheaper

355 mL can was generously provided by a friend that vacationed in Cuba. Very light, pale yellow, really not much colour at all, very bright clarity, and looks quite fizzy. One inch coarse head quickly reduces to a thin lace (which eventually disappeared). Slightly sour aroma, some DMS, but otherwise there's not much here. Flavour is primarily a light sweetness, very clean, and again not much to speak of. A bit of hop spiciness appears if you let it warm up a little. Dry finish with no flavour in the finish. Very light body with a high, coarse carbonation. Overall, very clean and non-offensive, unless you like your beer to have flavour. Not something that I'd go looking for unless the drinking water is questionable.

355ml grey can, alcohol by volume listed at 4%. The can reads 'Mayabe Cerveza Clara' and assures me it is 'una cerveza cubana autentica'... glad to hear it. I'm quite sure this is a different beer than that I'm reviewing it under, the 'Mayabe Calidad Extra' (also brewed by Bucanero), but I'll leave it as is. Other than the alcohol and different can I can't find enough to justify a new entry.
Pours a very light colour, straw yellow with almost lime like tints of green to the light. Bits of head, most of which fades. An adjunct filled aroma - far from favourable but only on par with the style. Carbonation fine, drinkability average. Taste is mostly filled with corn starch like adjuncts. This is exactly what I would expect from a Cuban lager. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Thanks CXChrisman for scoring me this one from Cuba!

Well, I suppose if there was a category or style called Beach Beer, this would be one of those.

Its the kind of thing you drink when you're sitting on the beach baking your brains out in the sun. Just enough flavour, fizz, and armoma to distinguish it from the local water (which might be suspect, so you don't want to be drinking that). And because you're enjoying your dose of paradise out there by the surf, it doesn't really matter that it doesn't taste or smell much like a proper beer. Low alcohol lightweight stuff, so you can pound 'em away one after another to no effect.

Completely unremarkable, but not offensive in any way. Its only about where you are when you're drinking this. Not to be consumed in the vicinity of real beer.

Thanks to Dave J. for bringing this back for me to try.

A - Clear straw with a fairly decent head with some staying power.

S- Lager-y? Some grain some leafy hops. A touch beany? Never had a beany beer before....

T - Slight tartness and lemon starts this one off. Finishes with a decent hoppiness. Otherwise, flavour is lacking. Not bad for a macro.

M - Light and fizzy, but not overly so.

D - Drinkable, and refreshing. (Which is good, in Cuba)

Can. I sampled this one at a ranch near Matanzas, Cuba. Very light gold in colour with lots of carbonation. Faint aromas of malt and bubble gum. Slight mineral flavor, along with a touch of malt. Little to no hop contribution. Light and clean finishing. Not horrible for a light beer, but then again, its still a light beer.
