Pours a midnight black color, oil like. Short dense brown head that settles into a solid ring. Very RIS like.

The aroma is of a mild roasted malt, some anise. Subtle cocoa and caramel provide some sweetness. There is a slight sour berry, like a sour cherry. Again right on the spot for a RIS.

The flavor starts off similar to a milk stout, light and sweet. This is quickly changed but a heavy roasted malt. Burnt pumpernickel and charred wood and ash. Light caramel. Pretty much straight up RIS with huge roast flavor.

Full body with tingly carbonation. Starts sweet but is quickly taken over but a roasted bitterness. Slight belly burn from the ABV and a touch sticky in the finish. Not as thick as some RIS out there but still has some heft and is quite smooth.

A very good straight up roasty stout. Very drinkable.

Poured from bottle into snifter....

Pours pitch black... oily thick looking.... produced a beautiful mocha brown sugar colored head.. but sadly went away fairly quck a ring stuck around a bit but also went away leaving just the liquid..

Smell was roast, char, liquorice/anise, slight alcohol smell which really came forward as it warmed up. A touch of chocolate and something fruity... like a dark cherry but super light...

Taste matched the smell and was all delightfully balanced. Nice and toasty/bitter toward the back end..

Smooth in the beginning which gets heavier midway thru. Lightly carbonated and on the heavier end which I like.. a tad sticky... which I actually love...

Overall.... well... for some reason I always sell gsb short... they have really good brews but nothing earth shattering.. I popped this open expecting a light typical stout with minimal flavor... the pour was good but the second I smelled it I knew ot would be good.. tasted sorta abyss like and in my opinion way up there with top notch ris' s. Im glad I have another as when I was drinking this I said this could be sooo good 2 years or so from now.. but who knows... well see...

£dit:

Had this on nitro on 5-19-14...

A lot creamier, heavier on the body. Just what I was looking for. Improved on the m outhfeel most definitely but took away on some flavor which this beer is known for. Still very good and still a beer I'd prefer to drink on nitro than not.

picked up some bottles yesterday at the release. i waited as long as i could before popping one open (a day). had a pour at the release and was blown away by the beer. enjoyed from my 22oz talkbeer snifter.

a - pried the amazingly awesome and carefully applied gold wax off the bottle to get to the cap. the dipping on the bottle was done with care...you could really tell. it almost felt like a crime removing it, but i had to get to the liquid inside. it had been over 24 hours since i had this beer and i couldn't stop thinking about popping a bottle to see how the bottle stacked up to the tap. the beer poured thick and dark with a nice dark tan head that didn't hang out long (i poured softly though as to not overflow my glass with the full bottle pour). lacing was sparse, but where it grabbed the glass, chunks lay leaving reminders of how full my glass once was. real great shine and lush look. very attractive RIS.

s - malty roasted chocolate with some soft alcohol phenols.

t - the highlight of this beer...and probably the most important aspect..the flavor. big, bold, and rich. roasted. chocolate. nice uptick of sweetness on the finish. nothing is too much in any direction...great balance and classic russian imperial stout with a really wonderful roast.

m - full bodied. coats the mouth. the way a stout ought to be.

o - go ahead, call me a homer...local or not, this beer is legit. in today's beer world where so few breweries are making a special release stout without putting it in barrels or adding some odd ingredients it is refreshing to see a genuine world class to style russian imperial stout coming from a new-ish brewery. and the fact that they are local makes it all the better (i cannot wait to drink as much of this as i can while kegs pop up around town at bars and bevies). keep up the great work. this one gives SH IRS a run for its money.
