A - Amber pour. Clear with some carbonation bubbling to the surface. Minimal lacing. Slight amount of foam.

S - Smell of rye and spices is present. The smell is kind of unique. The aroma of rye grain and peppery spice is really enjoyable.

T - Flavor is refreshing. Strong flavor of fresh rye seed. Finish has a little amount of heat, and and earthy flavor.

M - Decent feel, but it does tend to linger a while. While the beer is easily sessionable, the potency of the flavors may overwhelm your palate. Would be great with snack foods.

O - I liked this one. I'm finding I like the seasonals from GSB more than the regular lineup. For those that get a kick from rye beers this is a good one.

A: The beer is clear but very dark garnet red in color (black when viewed from afar) and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high beige head that quickly died down, leaving a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel malts, toffee and juniper berries are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste starts out with malty flavors of caramel, molasses and toffee and has strong notes of juniper berries and spicy rye in the finish. Some hints of dark fruits are also noticeable.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The malts lend a bit of warming.
O: This is an enjoyable beer for the holidays. From the initial taste and smell you would think this is a winter warmer but the rye helps to balance out the malts and makes this not too difficult to drink.

Poured a deep amber hue with a one finger foamy light tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a moderate caramel malt, ribust rye spice and herbal hop.

The smell featured a round, sweet malt peppered with rye spice and an herbal hop. Not much juniper detected.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a tasty and robust rye ale.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber color. Almost ruby like. The off white head is short and dense and settled into a solid ring.

The aroma is sweet and almost candy like. Toffee notes are pretty strong and there is a peppery spice perhaps from the rye. Nothing else really stands out.

The taste of a big bready malt. Some mineral notes. A hint of a sour twang from the rye. Deep caramel sweetness with a touch of sugary candy.

The feel is moderate with fizzy carbonation. Slightly sweet on the palate. Nice airy finish.

I was worried that this would be an imbalanced sweet bomb but the flavor is quite balanced. Flavors are good but nothing special.

A: Nice reddish color with a thin head that sticks around, but with little lacing.

S: Spicy notes from the rye are most prominent with a bit of hop and malt for balance.

T: Loads of rye spiciness to it. Light malts come through with slight hop notes. Very peppery which is nice in a rye.

M: A medium body, but a bit on the thinner end of the medium spectrum. Good carbonation.

O: Rye beers will always burn out the palate at about the same rate a strong IPA would. Not a sessionable beer.

this one just appeared in bottles, so figured i'd give it a whirl. enjoyed from a gsb mason jug.

a - brew pours a fairly dark purple with ruby highlights and a generous finger of frothy head that never fully left the beer, but thinned out to about an 1/8 in skin on the surface. streaky lacing clung to the glass as i sipped the beer.

s - the nose is a malty soggy grape. the rye seems to give it a grainy glossing and overall the nose starts to lean more towards a scotch ale.

t - rye is heavy here and works well with the malt to give a very wintery vibe. that being said, it is all malt. a bit toasted, a bit biscuity...kind of even marzen-like.

m - medium bodied. nothing too out of the ordinary.

o - overall, decent winter beer, nothing to go crazy about. i find that rye works best with a nice dose of hopping which this one lacks. kind of marzen, kind of scotch ale and then slap some grainy rye on top.

Everything is in excellent balance here, sweet dark malts, very subdued distinctive hops under a bunch of other flavors and rye. The whole experience is a well-integrated winter ale, and a delicious one - spot on!
