Love the glowing orange colour! The orange bouquet hits your nose but doesn't overpower: It stays for a moment or two then goes on about its business down your throat. Very drinkable, crisp, a little wine-y and just a tad on the dry side; Somewhat light, not heavy at all (call it medium-light), nice balance of citrus fruit (Orange obviously, {duh!}) , flower and herbs from the hops. Head doesn't stick around long, but when it does, it makes the Blood Orange Pale Ale that much more desirable. A very good beer for the summer to help cool you off. Makes you want to have two or three in a row.

Pretty freaking awful. Take a crap pale ale and mix it with "natural flavors" (aka more crap) and this is what you're left with. Tastes like the medicine you had as a child for a sore throat and leaves you feeling worse. Bought a six pack of it earlier, drank half of a bottle and tossed the rest. It's that bad. Steer clear. In fact, run away -- it's awful.

Picked this up a few weeks back at Top Hops in New York, as everyone was watching the United States take on Portugal in the World Cup. Finally got around to this today and I wasn't sure what to expect from this brewery as I had never reviewed anything from them before. The blood orange flavor could have been more present here and this was too astringent and hoppy for me to consider this true to form but as an APA, this was more than sufficient to stay true to style and be enjoyable at the same time.

The pour to this was good, as the beer had a golden almond hue, sufficient head, and just a bit of lacing that slid down the side of my pint glass after every sip. A fair amount of blood orange, earthy hops, and citrus could be found in the nose with the bitterness feeling a bit more prominent in the taste. Had this had a bit more malt and blood orange in it, the mouthfeel and body would have that much more full and enjoyable but as it was, this was a bit too watery and sharp for my taste. It felt as if this had grapefruit in it but as a "Blood Orange" beer, I thought that this should have been a bit easier to quaff.

Thankfully, the alcohol wasn't terribly strong in this and this beer turned out to go down relatively easily. Maybe some wheat or more detectable malt would have made this memorable but as it was, this didn't differ from so many other APA's that I've had before. It's not a bad choice for these warmer months but there wasn't an aspect about this beer that stood out to me. Hopheads who want a citrus beer and feel like puckering up during their drinking session need look no further than this offering from Great South Bay.

Wow - hoppy and citrusy without the slightest pine note.
Pours clear and brilliant amber. Turn on your nose before sipping and get very clear orange notes, think it's orange juice, but then the taste is very much a clean pale ale, quite hoppy without any malt aftertaste.
Served in a standard pint glass. Head dissipates quickly but leaves lacy white on the sides of the glass.

I am now committed to reducing, if not eradicating, my backlog of bottles. This one features one of my approved pics, but I assume that I had set it aside, awaiting just such approval. This is partially attributable to how the backlog begins.

From the bottle: "Inside this bottle you'll find the liquid personification of the creativity that drives us as craft brewers here at GSB. Blood Orange Pale Ale starts with the finest quality malted barley and American hops. We then infuse the beer with blood oranges to add the bittersweet flavor that rounds out this remarkably well balanced pale ale."

My anxiousness to get started on this led to an aggro pour, further resulting in a pseudo-cascade that settled into two fingers of foamy, bone-white head with decent retention. No guesswork need with regard to color on this golden ale - the label identified it as SRM = 10. Of course, this brought forth my old buddies, Mammon, Croesus and Midas, all begging for a sip. It is really sad to see them so desperate for gold. Nose smelled like orange honey! My Old Lady, the Queen Bee, would like this. Mouthfeel was medium and the flavor was very honey-like, tending towards a tea-like mellowness. Think orange pekoe with honey and you are there. This was a really nice, mellow beer on a hot, humid afternoon. I usually eschew APAs in favor of AIPAs, but this was definitely worthwhile. Finish was semi-dry and the orange flavor lingered well after the swallow. Nice.
