I love deschutes, and used to visit the pub in Bend whenever I got the chance (and still do). So when I heard they were opening up here in Portland, I was really excited.
The new space is way bigger than bend, but with a completely different feel. Fitting for it's location in the pearl district, this pub is decidedly more upscale, a bit pretentious, and a little "cold". I'll take the more cozy, lodgy feel of the bend pub over this any day. Other than being kind of cavernous and plain, the atmosphere is generally negatively impacted for my tastes by the crowds in this place. It's loud, full, and not very intimate.
The quality here is top notch. I love the deschutes beers, and am always impressed by their pub-only selections. The food has always been really good for me as well. I love the garlic burger, the elk burger, and venison chili. I haven't tried any of the larger entrees, but everything I've seen come out of the open kitchen looks great.
Service here is pretty decent. When it gets real busy, table service can be slow (to serve) and rushed (when they are there with you). The bar section has always been better for me.
The selection here is great (for a bar that only serves their beers). You can expect to find you favorite standard deschutes beers, but you'd be missing out not trying the pub only creations and special releases that are always in rotation. Generally the pub-only and special release beers outnumber the standard beers 2-1. A perfect proportion if you ask me.
Food is really good. While not always cheap, I think you get more and better quality food for your money than a lot of places.
For the good brews and tasty food, in a trendy neighborhood with a reputation of being on the pricier side of portland, I think the value is pretty solid. I've never had buyers remorse at deschutes.
In closing, other than the atmosphere, I love this place, and I think the atmosphere is probably the most subjective aspect of a place like this - I really like the place over-all, you might like it even more so.

This is my third time visiting this fine establishment with my wife and two boys in tow. This time around on tap, I had a Fresh Squeezed and an Obsidian Stout on nitro. The options on tap, including cask + nitro, are excellent. The establishment is up-scale, and makes you feel like you are in an up-scale dining establishment. The staff there are helpful and are looking to please the customers. I have been here for dinner in the past, but this time we were eating lunch. Once again, expectations were met, and the food was nothing less than exceptional. Great location, fine food, and fine beer = A place I will keep visiting.
