Tripel Tonnellerie is a 100% barrel fermented version of a Belgian Abbey Tripel. The base beer carries a classically clean maltiness, balanced by a fruity aroma and a dry, spicy mouthfeel. Extended fermentation in oak barrels inoculated with wild yeast allowed the beer to develop the rustic, earthy tones of a classic countryside biere de garde resulting in a uniquely flavorful beer, suitable for beer and wine lovers alike.

Well it's 2019 and somehow there are several of these 2014s on the shelf at my local spot. The price was finally marked down a little so I took a shot and glad I did.

I like the look - has this straw color but with a really louche-like haziness. Not much head but persistent foam due to the excellent carbonation. It looks like a beer and an inviting one.

The smell - uh weird for a "tripel". Very sour with some funk. Mostly sour though. Tripel?

Very sour and funky and with a lingering, pleasantly musty residual taste. Sadly it's not overly complex, but what is there is top slot. I think the closest beer might be Temptation - the Russian River classic. Somehow almost but not quite citrusy. Excellent though absolutely not what I expected.

Perfect mouthfeel. High level of carbonation and it matches the sour flavor to a tee. Cannot imagine a beer to be better in this category.

Hard to settle on an overall rating - it's so unexpected and not something you'd want a lot of but you would love a little of. Like Scotch. But definitely not like a tripel.

My guess is the weird wild yeasts or bacteria from the barrel were able to eat through the "unfermentables" and the resulting acid turned this way different than anticipated.

Bottle: Poured a golden color tripel with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of oak and dry vinous notes is interesting but not close to the style. Taste is a nice mix of oak, vinous notes, rustic malt with some funky yeast notes also noticeable. Strange residual sugar notes also subsists. Body is about average with good carbonation. Not bad but not close to a tripel.

750ml, 2014
The Bruery tulip

Review from spring 2014

A: Slightly hazy bright yellow orange. Nice lingering frothy bright white. Sticky lacing sheeting. Long legs.

S: Some tannic oak. Banana. Little of that bubble gum character. Belgian yeast. Dry on the back side.

T: It's OK. Nothing to write home about here. Wasn't impressed, as I'm not the biggest Tripel fan.

M: Medium bodied. Thicker than most because of the oak.

750ml bottle into tulip. Bottle dated Nov. 16, 2013.

A: Pours a clear light golden color beneath a billowing and very dense and soft cream colored head that slowly faded into a thick and lasting film. Sticky and thick patches of lace were left down the glass.
S: Very fragrant nose full of fruits and spices. I get bursting citrus with hints of kumquats and tangerine, as well as spicy and peppery yeast and earthy oak barrel. I get some hints of golden fruits and slight clove and mint.
T: Much like the nose, the flavors are very rustic and earthy. Fruits are both full of citrus and golden fruit, and the spice is peppery, earthy, and barnyardy. The oak adds a nice dryness along with some earthy complexity. The finish almost has a brett-like character with flavors of dry, creamy, earthy, yeast, and the aftertaste is slightly bitter and just faintly tart with the suggestion of green apple, lemon, buttery oak, and peppery spice.
M: Surprisingly light mouthfeel for what is essentially a double digit alcohol beer. I was impressed by how well the booze is hidden. The medium-light body and drying finish make this beer exceptionally drinkable. Carbonation is fuzzy, soft, and very crisp.
O: One of the best tripels I’ve had in a long time. This bottle was a pleasure to polish off. I was surprised by how complex and flavorful yet light and drinkable this beer was. Cheers.

750ml poured into a matching bruery snifter. The brew appears golden yellow in color with a firm white cap resting atop that displays solid retention from the support of constantly rising bubbles.

The smell contains notes of citrus zest before some slight sulfur and then finishes with a fruity apple/pear skin feel.

The taste is spicy with clove, banana, pear, apple and a mild citrus note before soft oakiness and vanilla are noticed. A slight herbal bitter finish with warming booze are the last things noted.

This is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. A nice and unique take on a tripel that I would drink again.
