The traditional sixth anniversary gift is candy or sugar, so we’ve named our 6th anniversary ale "Sucré" which is "sugar" in French. Sucré is our sixth anniversary ale, loosely brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using our house Belgian yeast strain. Layered with complex flavors of dark fruit, vanilla, oak, and burnt sugar, Sucré is a robust ale, surely the perfect beer to mark this major milestone.

Had this on Thanksgiving 2016.

Pours brown but isn't very adept at forming and retaining a head. Just left with liquid, no head really. The aroma is true to form for these anniversary series beers, has that boozy cracker jack, toffee, caramel, apple brandy, rum, brown sugar, mild non bitter dark fruit aroma.

Taste is big, but I mean, 17.5% whatchu expect? Its not nearly as big as that number is. Everything you smell need not be repeated here, it comes out in the taste as well. I am kinda tepid with rum barrel stuff, super hit or miss, usually miss, but in recent years my palate has been trending a little more towards them and this was one of the first. Notes of tobacco join those that were in the aroma, vanilla, more oak, never really did understand the belgian yeast on these you can't taste it nor does it seem to have any impact on the final product. Sticky stuff. Carbonation was just fine and slightly lower than most beer, but fitting here.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/20/2014. Pours hazy very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, apricot, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, rum, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, vanilla, molasses, licorice, leather, tobacco, pepper, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Some increasing rum booze in the aromas, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and rum barrel notes; with big strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, apricot, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, rum, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, vanilla, molasses, licorice, leather, tobacco, pepper, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness and rum/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, apricot, red apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, rum, toasted oak, brown bread, light molasses/licorice, leather, tobacco, pepper, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and rum barrel flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness and rum/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and rum/oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Lightly increasing warmth of 17.5%, with mild barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic old ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and rum barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV; with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Amazingly balanced rich malts, fruity yeast, and rum barrel integration. Rum barrels can be polarizing in any beer style application, but they still pulled it off. Not overly boozy/tannic on barrels; or overly sweet/heavy from lingering tannic dryness. A highly enjoyable offering. Not as amazing as other barrel variations, but still an amazing style example as expected.

Appearance: Cloudy dark-brown in color. Modest sized beige head that dissipated quickly.

Smell: Moderate Rum notes, some spicy notes, brown sugar, and some fruity sherry notes. No overt Rum bal notes in the nose and very mild alcohol presence for the ABV.

Taste: The Rum bal-aging, the brown sugar, and spicy notes combine to form a different experience in contrast to the Bourbon bal-aged Anniversary beers. The beer initially finishes slightly sweet with the Rum, brown sugar, spicy notes and dark fruit notes but transitions to a dry finish with some tannic oak notes showing up.

Mouth-feel: On the heavy side of medium-bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall: The Rum bal-aging provides a different experience compared to the boubon bal-aged Bruery Anniversary beers. Hopefully the Bruery goes back to using spirit barrels other than Bourbon. A unique treat.

Large shared bottle.
Boozy sweet aroma with the alcohol more hidden in the taste.
Very sweet, this drinks like a beer liqueur. Rather subtle rum flavor.
Moderate complexity at best.
