In brewing, BBL is the notation for “barrel,” a unit of measurement equal to 31 gallons. This is not to be confused with an oak barrel, which typically holds nearly two BBLs of beer. Still with us? Great. A special blend of our bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with our bourbon barrel aged sour stout, plus an addition of juicy blueberries, Blue BBLs finishes with incredibly vinous tones. The acidity from the sour stout matches perfectly with the sweet malt character of the imperial stout and the fruity tannins from the berries round everything together. Notes of red wine, blueberry skins, toffee and roasted oak. A fine addition to the line up of Hoarders Society exclusive ales.

Pours a dark cola brown, fizzy 2" tan head that fizzes out quickly, no lacing or retention. Nose is cola, vanilla, bourbon, light citrus; treacle, molasses; good, aged balsamic vinegar. Taste is slow to develop, but starts with tart fruit notes and light oak and barrel; as it warms, sweeter, fruitier flavor begin to emerge that match nicely with tartness, along with strong notes of leather and spicy tobacco. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. Mouthfeel is moderate, just a touch of chew. Solid overall, though neither the base stout, blueberry, nor sour element stands out.

2018 Vintage
375ml bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours black in color with some light creeping through, one-finger foamy khaki head has short retention

S- chocolate covered blueberries up front, chocolate fudge, marshmallow, some port wine qualities, hint of acidic vinegar, oaky bourbon and vanilla

T- chocolate and blueberries up front with some malty sweet notes are immediately followed by a sharp, but not overpowering acidic tartness. Mid-palate gives candy bar nougat, booze soaked blueberries, cocoa and marshmallows. The finish gives a light balsamic vinegar tartness and linger of blueberries and chocolate

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a tart finish, abv is hidden quite well

O- just enough tartness to compliment the malty notes and the blueberries, this one drinks way too easy for 16% abv

2018 version poured into a snifter. A clear cola brown out of the bottle, the beer assumed a very dark hue in the glass. A small light tan head formed but quickly retreated, leaving only a few wisps of foam. The aroma favored the sour aspect with tart cherries. There was also faint oak and bourbon, but not much blueberry. The taste was a completely different matter. The imperial stout dominated, with rich chocolate, coffee, and bourbon flavors. The blueberries mixed very well here, almost dessert like and seemingly covered in chocolate. The sour notes were also there but much more restrained, shining the most on the finish. For a 16+% beer, the booziness was quite low. The body was surprisingly light for the size of the beer, possibly from the sour blend. Slick and smooth. Overall this was simply fantastic. Highly recommended!

Had this on tap at the source in Placentia a few years back. One of those $3 tasters. Pours black. For a beer called "blue" ___ it sure is a different color than blue. I get why later on the name varied out to black and blue bbls. Anyways, black pour, almost no head, just black motor oil with no head to speak of. Aroma of typical roasted malt and heavy barrel presence with some blueberry juice. Honestly like the way northwoods bourbon county does this better.

Taste made me question the sour stout part of the blend, cynically I wondered if this was unintentionally soured and then they had to figure out a way to not have to dump that beer, so much like the old world circa 19th century beers, they just blended the sour with fresh unsoured beer. I dunno, but I do know it didn't work for me like I hoped. There was roast at times, sour at times (mild) and then fruit juice and oak like a spiked fruited red wine, but it never really came together. Like, derde golf was weird, but everything came together nicely.

A: Inky black/brown darkness, opaque.
S: Dark roasty malts, a bit of blueberry, barrel woodiness.
T: Sour blueberry stout in your face. Boozy, balanced. Slight tannic notes.
F: Definitely full bodied, crisp, but not thick. Smooth throughout. Perfect carbonation.
O: Simply amazing. I've never had a sour stout, but this knocked it out of the park. Get more, now and forever.

L: pretty dark. Not much head. Held up to the light there is some brown Coca Cola color coming through.

S: nice barrel up front. Caramel hits along with slight blueberry jam.

T: I am not a fan of sours really. But this blend is amazing. Barrel and base stout are there. Finish is like a Cab wine. Dry and with nice tannin notes. Blueberry at the end comes through nice. And a slight sour sting.

F: dry and crisp. Not a thick beer. But I guess that’s not what it’s trying to be. Smooth until the end where the sour bite it.

O: great beer for the style. I think this is the most sour like beer I could handle. All the parts come together nicely.
