Living in Southern California, we're huge fans of both Mexican cuisine and, of course, Mexican cocktails. This is a tribute to our favorite blended fiesta beverage, the Margarita. We aged this wheat-based beer in Tequila barrels for an extended period of time, lending warmth and a roasted agave character. Coupled with a slight lime tartness and a classic, salty finish, this brew is a great approximation of the refreshing summer afternoon Margarita.

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from the 750 mL bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass. 2014 bottling date, consumed on 11/10/17.

A: Pours a hazy medium brown with a fairly low amount of visible carbonation. Forms a thin off-white head that fades away quickly. Some (likely yeasty) floaters in suspension.

S: Big tequila up front – boozy and a bit spicy. Some oak, and lemon-lime citric acid and tartness. Mild biscuit malts with milder caramel sweetness.

T: Tequila and a modest sourness – seems like a mix of citric and lactic acid. Lemon and lime elements. Biscuit malts with some sweetness again – just a hint of caramel. Modest oak tannins and mild vanilla. There's more tart acidity near the end, and maybe just a hint of salt on the lips after the swallow.

M: A medium body overall. Relatively low carbonation. The alcohol burn is low - despite the sky-high ABV - though the tequila flavors are screamingly obvious.

O: This wasn't awful, but certainly not my favorite. I wish the malt bill was cleaner, and the tartness had more lactic character - that would have made it seem more margarita-like with the citric acid. I went into this with limited expectations, since tequila barrel-aged beers are not generally something I've liked in the past. This did nothing to change my mind.

Well its time we put this beer down into writing. Light yellow/gold color, 1/2" white head. This looks fine. Aroma, whoa, so yeah, it has that margarita tequila white oak thing going for it. It also has like, nail polish remover too apparently. Dude, the alcohol is huge, I guess that is what I'm getting.

Taste, the sour and tequila flavors are there. But damn, shit this strong is hard to make sour also (well done right). I mean, all the commercial tug job stuff is true, margarita, tequila, white oak, lime, salt, its all there. But the kick in the nuts was not advertised. I actually think this beer has some possibilities if they have the alcohol chill out a little bit (a lot bit). Wheatwine? This tastes nothing like a wheatwine. I don't hate it as much as the average beer nerd, but I also have to admit, it isn't something I'm proud to have in the cellar.

Wow. Yikes. I heard this one was a hot mess, but even I was surprised at just how bad it was. Smelled like something you'd use to strip paint off a car. Tasted like nail polish remover. What a mess.

A: poured into a snifter to a hazy light gold with a finger of dense off white head that fades quickly and leaves minimal lacing
S: Smells of lime and tequila with a slight hint of oak
T: Taste is a little tart off the bat with some lime and a little salt. There's a lot of tequila influence as well. Swallow is more tequila and lime with a little funk on the aftertaste plus a little oak. Ever so slight alcohol is apparent as well.
M: Surprisingly light on the palate for the ABV. carbonation is low and almost nonexistent and the beer has a drying finish
O: An interesting beer that I think could have been better with a lower ABV and more sour. Not bad but not great and unfortunately it doesn't really do a good job for the style because of the intent of the beer.

2014 bottle opened in 2015.

A - Hazy apricot body. Low head with loose bubbles. Poor retention and lace.

S - Agave, white tequila, a touch of salt, and lime.

T - Sourdough bread with lime, tequila, vanilla, oak, and agave.

M - Smooth medium-light body.

O - Surprisingly mild at 15%, but the flavor profile is definitely an acquired taste.

This is one of the worst tasting beers I can remember trying. HUGE tequila taste to this. If I did not know better, I would have thought I was drinking straight liquor. The Bruery certainly accomplishes what they are looking to do here though.. For as much as I hated this, I found myself finishing the glass I poured.... Glad to try it, but never again.

wow, this was unbelievable strong. Tequila really comes through, but it's a bit much. Always interested in the flavor, but don't like how it blends with the beer.
