Notes/Commercial Description:
Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged.

From notes on September 6, 2012.

From a 750 ml bottle to a tulip.

A-The brew was hyper-carbonated and difficult to pour without wasting beer or waiting a while for the head to calm. The off-white head was slow to dissipate even after I got the beer into the tulip. The beer is very murky and has a light amber color.

S-The smell was kind of funky and grassy with a little bit of alcohol spice and sweetness. There was a slightly citrusy kick as well (oranges and lemons).

T-Taste was slightly sweet with light malts and a touch of funk...not that different from the smell. The alcohol is also noticeable, but not in-your-face. I also picked up a slightly herbal, grassy flavor...again, not that different than the smell.

M-Feel was lighter to medium bodied with lots of carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

O-I enjoyed this saison. It has a nice mix of grassy, herbal flavors and sweet, spicy citrus. A good summer brew in terms of flavor profile. The mouthfeel was great, lots of carbonation but easy drinking and crisp finishing. I will look for this again next spring/summer.

750ml bottle into a tulip

A: Pours a hazy light orange with a big white head that sticks around for a long while and leaves a ton of lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is typical saison with nice notes of lemon zest, citrus, and hay as well as a nice banana/plantain aroma from the brett. Smells pretty sweet.

T: The taste is very sweet with big flavors of malt, sweet orange, and ripe apple. There's also a bit of an earthy taste I am assuming is the brett. The sweetness could be cut a bit more by something else like more hops or a different brett strain.

M: The feel is medium bodied and full of active carbonation.

O: A bit too sweet for the style. I wanted to love this one after reading some reviews but it doesn't live up to others in the style like Saison-Brett or Seizoen Bretta. I think some of the Jester King brews are even better but it's still a tasty beer.

Bomber into my RR tulip

Appearance: Murky straw with an off white head which is retained throughout drinking. Nice lacing too.

Smell: Overwhelming banana with faint straw. Some funk and clove. Smell is very crisp and banana is prevalent.

Taste: Banana front end with some pepper and clove. Finishes not as crisp as the smell might make one think. Only the slightest taste of funk which I think works well here. Even taste some sweet caramel notes--maybe hints of maple syrup? It all works really well.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and very drinkable. Alcohol is a non factor in taste.

Overall: A very solid beer at a decent price. I can and can't see how Wine Enthusiast would name this the beer of the year for 2012. I think aging this one would do wonders too. Either way I'm going to seek it out next time I go to the beer store. Worth trying for sure.
