Notes/Commercial Description:
Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

A: hazy, deep honey, golden color, attractive, head 1 finger slight lacing remains on cup.

S: hops and honey, aroma matured as the beer warmed.

T: definitely complex, spicy at first ( perhaps when it was colder), piney, metallic, yeasty, dry-no fruit, tangy.

M: thick, high carbonation- effervescent.

O: I enjoyed the complexity and uniqueness of the beer. Unnoticeable ABV, till midway through glass. Could easily drink too much and get smashed. A little too metallic for my palate. I tend to prefer more fruit flavors. Its a good beer and i understand why people like it. Though, I likely would not purchase again, I would certainly share a bottle. Glad I tried it.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, almost glowing light amber haze with a towering 4 finger, white head with peach highlights. Great head retention with abundant lacing.

Aroma: Light citrus-y banana, fresh cut grass, wet hay, spicy underlying hints of rye peaking through. Plenty of funk and suggestions of pineapple from the Brettanomyces and a sweet smelling honey underneath it all. wow!

Taste: Spicy yeast upfront, funky brett, allspice and a big raw squash flavor I wasn't anticipating at all. Tart notes of bread-y rye and pineapple towards the end of the pepper filled bitter and dry finish. Incredible!

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate to high carbonation, juicy yet dry at the same time.

Overall: An absolutely original take on a very diverse style. Incredibly complex with plenty of twists and turns for even a seasoned beer enthusiast. A very contemplative, adventurous brew that I would only recommend for someone who really wants their palate challenged. This is definitely going to be in my fridge regularly!
