Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Bitterbill on 05-25-2008

Our Summer seasonal, Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style Golden Ale with a Southeast Asian twist. Instead of using candi sugar (typical for such a beer), we use rice in the mash to lighten the body and increase the gravity, and spice with Thai Basil. The result is an aromatic, digestible and complex beer made for a lazy summer evening.

Pours a cloudy dark amber with a creamy tall and stable head. The last of the bottle added some yeast to the mix...

Smells yeasty and raisiny like a good tripel should, but it's lighter and crisper on the nose with just a slight hint of citrus. Tastes like a tripel, but lighter and with a fresh green and earthy note I'd have not attributed to Thai Basil had I not known it was already in the brew.

The feel is creamy but a lighter medium with a silky texture.

Overall, this is a wonderful take on the style that I'll look forward to every year!

Pours a lively light Amber with lots of fluffy white head that leaves a small amount of lacing.

Nose is very unique. Banana, pepper, bubblegum, savoury herbal.

Taste follows nose. High carbonation. It's a Belgian Tripel at heart but it departs into different territory. I noticed the same bubblegum flavour here that I noticed in Brooklyn Sorachi Ace.

Good beer. I'm still figuring this one out.

750 ml bottle was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: A two finger billowy head was poured that reduced to a puffy layer. It is a hazy pale yellow with some clarity and vision of tiny bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Vanilla, pilsner malts, pale malts, apple, pear, powdery yeast, esters, slight alcohol.

Taste: You get all the typical flavors you would expect from a tripel. The basil has mellowed out a bit, but this is very enjoyable with the little bit of time, I can notice. Rice does lighten things up and add some sweetness to the beer too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light to medium bodied, chewy, a little dry, some booze, and medium to high carbonation.

Overall: Pretty nice American take on a traditional Belgian style of beer. Stands up with a lot of them. Not summer here in Boston, but definitely summer in the Southern Hemisphere where this would be enjoyed at the current moment.
