Big thanks to cocoapuph for sending me a few of these, as well as a few other Berliners! Hottenroth comes out looking pale like Kristin Stewart; pale-straw with light, yellow tints at the edges. The beer cloudy as hell - so cloudy, in fact, that it's 100% opaque... Strange to see for such a light-hued brew. The white head fizzles down quickly, but surprisingly lasts as a two millimeter thick skin for quite a while.

Very soft aroma with quite a bit of stuff going on for such a light brew; lemon zest, dry fabric, light barnyard funk, earth and dirt, weedy hops, grass, and a mild, zesty tartness that rushes through the entire profile. Smells quite nice for a Berliner. I would like to appreciate a bit more tart fruit, but the heavily hopped aspect is certainly a nice change of pace.

Hottenroth is lightly hoppy and grassy up front; once again, a different take than many Berliners, given the higher-than-normal hop presence, but it's somewhat compelling and pretty damn tasty. A dry, mustiness floats over everything as a light tartness slowly rambles in about midway through; lemon zest, fresh apples and apple skins, and a big grainy and wheat presence in the background.

The Brett is noticeable at first and only gets more powerful with time; wet wood, mild horseblanket, and a damp, cork and cellar-like funk that plays well, hand-in-hand with the lemon tartness. Lightly acidic towards the end, but it doesn't even come close to something that would burn your stomach. Dry, zesty, crisp finish; light-bodied and highly carbonated.

Very, very nice Berliner. Super refreshing and insanely drinkable, but I guess that's pretty expected for the style. A little different than many Berliners in terms of the higher hoppage, but it's not enough to inject unwanted bitterness or distract from the nice, zesty fruits and soft wheat flavors. Very well executed, thanks again to cocoapuph for this. I might be asking him for more pretty soon!

Couldn't spot the scent until I looked at comments. Someone said cooked corn and sulfur on the nose.... Perfectly said. That is exactly how it smells. Taste is strange, wheat overtones make it a strange sour. Unusual is my choice term for this. Very acidic, not very smooth and salty after taste, likely would never get again but glad I tried this interesting sour.

Edit: after eating a couple of pretzels this sour changed completely, it tasted much smoother, much more crisp on the palate. An actually very good flavor after the pretzel. Likely due to salt of the pretzels?

1) WITH WOODRUFF (traditional method):

Appearance - Bright, bright turquoise and neon with bubbly champagne head. Head has traces of neon blue. Like Scope. Very interesting. Quite active in the glass.

Smell - Faint lemon peel, bubble gum ice cream, straw, candy, floral and plant-like.

Taste - Sorbet, Christmas cake/ fruitcake, elderberries, pot-pourri, green jelly, cloves, flowers, mint, cane sugar, elements of a lambic yet less sour and more floral, herbal notes. Clean yeasty notes. Wheat with lemon peel and lime Kool-aid. The lactobacillus and brett really balances the sugar and helps pulls all the syrup notes together.

Mouthfeel - Strong carbonation which works great with this beer. Clean and quick finish. Very nice.

Overall - This is where cocktails meet lambic/ sours. Incredibly unique. This may be the ultimate seasonal wheat beer when wanting to mix things up! I imagine drinking this at Christmas or on a hot summer day and having it blow my mind. There is no other style of beer that tastes anything like this when done the traditional way. Very earthy, floral and tart. Easily one of the most unique beers I've had in years.

2) WITHOUT WOODRUFF (non-traditional):

Appearance - Yellow/ golden with a slightly cloudy appearance. Bright, white head. Quite active in the glass.

Smell - Tart and dry. Lemon/ lemon peel, hay, straw, wheat, Significantly less sweetness (as expected, due to no syrup). Much more sour on the nose.

Taste - Wheat, hay, subtle pineapple, lemon, faint cloves and/or coriander. Strong acidity. Much dryer and tart without woodruff. It may go without saying, but this is significantly less complex on its own.

Mouthfeel - Dry and sour. Very similar to a lambic. Like biting into a lemon. Great feel.

Overall - Do yourself a favor and find some woodruff. Syrup is a must with this style of beer.

A: A pale yellow beer with very good clarity. There head is made of thick dense white white foam but dissipates after a minute.

S: A tart, acidic nose with a moderate fruit component of light colored fruit mostly of an apple peel like character and peach. A medium barnyard Brett funk.

T: A medium juicy tartness with light fruit component. There is very little perceived hops bitterness, no flavor hops of note and almost no malt sweetness. The balance is moderately tart. The finish is very dry.

M: A light bodied beer with a medium-strong level of carbonation.

O: A light, crisp, low-alcohol beer with a refreshing sourness. It's not a complex beer but they style is geared for that.

Pours a pear juice colored yellow cloud with a short-lived head that's eventually non-existant.

S- Lemony, toasty wet hay, wheaty and lactic, and a touch wild.

The taste has a bracing sourness up front when it's cold, but subsides and smoothes out as it warms. It's crisp and lemony, not very complex, but it doesn't need to be. This is an after work, hot day, slammer. And it does a great job of that.

This beer was split 3 ways from 75cl bottle

It pours a very cloudy very pale straw, one of the lightest colored beers I've seen. A brilliant white head sits above it.

The smell has a ton of lactic sourness. Tart fruit notes like peaches and white grapes are the other dominating aromas. It is really pleasant and so refreshing and tart.

The taste is much like the smell. A huge wave of mouth puckering tart and sourness is the first thing that hit me. Then a ton of white grape and green apple hits me, reminiscent of a Riesling wine that has gone sour.

The body is very light with such a high carbonation which makes this the ultimate summer refreshment. I don't have a huge familiarity with this style but this one hits all the notes for me.

750 ml pours a crystal clear pale yellow body with a two finger snowwhite head. Seond pour reveals significant haze. Spotty lacing.

Aroma is freshly squeezed lemons with a minor note of wheat malt.

Dry and tart on the palate with an aggressive, but pleasant carbonation.

Taste is fresh lemons with an edge of sour green apples. Light and airy. Just a hint of wheat malt twang. A faint note of must in the finish.

I could drink this all day. Hard to imagine a more drinkable beer. Very well done. I'm going to have to find some woodruff syrup the next time I try this style.

Smell: lemon, funk, and sugar

Taste: lemon, sour candy, and sugar

Mouthfeel: sour and sweet, high carbonation, light body

Drinkability: Very good for the style and my favorite from the Bruery. I could sip on this all day. Not a starter sour, but more of a medium one. Wish I could find this more easily.
