Had this on 10/23 at a tasting in NYC, from notes. Thanks for the bottle Shane!

Pours a cloudy yellow with a huge white head fading to film. Bottle began to foam as I opened it.

Smells of musty bales of hay. Straw piles in the barnyard, a lot funkier than I remembered. Citrus notes are along as well with a hint of pear.

Taste mirrors this funk as well as a distinct lemony acidity. As it warmed a touch, I kept getting a very weird almondy dry finish. I would expect it to finish dry, but the nuttiness that I kept detecting was odd. Such a distinct almond flavor too, almost an amaretto quality to it.

Mouthfeel was nice. Carbonation appropriate. Not terribly drinkable- it could be a lot better for its ABV, but this one is surprisingly funky and too much so to be able to gulp down.

750 ml bottle. Served in a chalice, the beer pours a slightly hazy straw gold color with about a half inch white head. It smells like wheat, bread/dough, lemon and also a bit of an herbal aroma I can't identify. The aroma isn't tart at all. However, that all changes in the taste. Tart lemon and apple flavors show up first, and there's also some wheat/grain and herbs noticable in the taste. Also has a nice lingering tart finish. Mouthfeel/body is light and thin, and it has moderate carbonation. Drinkability is excellent, it's crisp, refreshing, smooth and extremely easy to drink. With the ABV being just 3.1%, going through a bottle of this is pretty easy. This would really be a great summer beer. This is the first Bruery beer I've tried, and it certainly won't be the last.

Pale straw in color. Lots of foamy activity when I initially poured the glass, but quickly relaxed and formed a minimal at best head. What made me give it extra points is the lovely bed of bubbles that lay at the bottom of the glass. Not unlike sparkling wine!

The smell is easy enough to pinpoint. Lemon, green apple, bisquit and yeast (again, quite champagne like).

I love the lemony flavors that provide the backbone of this beer. not too strong and not too light.

The mouthfeel is, as expected, quite tart. Yet it is not shocking in its snap. There is an underlying body that keeps your taste buds conscious. Could turn off berliner purists if there really are any.

I could drink this beer any day. Its kinda cool outside right now and I feel that it isnt out of place even now.

I would love to have a taste of what a chef could build around this beer!

Another bottle picked up at Hawthorne's Cafe on opening day. Poured from the champagne bottle to my pint glass, a few times.

Appearance: Hazy pale yellow color with a small foamy white head that dissipates quickly. Minimal to no lacing as the brew disappears into my belly.

Smell: Some lemon and some green apples are the most predominant aroma's. Slightly tart, but not much. Touch of vinegar as well.

Taste: Tart up front, which is what I've come to find common in Berliner Weisse's. Lemon and green apple flavors after the sour wears off from the beginning. Taste is thin, vinegar is just a vague complement, and slight toasted biscuit.

Mouthfeel: Very light in body, light-moderate carbonation. Flavors are sharp but the overall experience is very thin but refeshing.

Drinkability: Very light in the stomach, low low low ABV and not overly sour. Not problem killing the whole bottle, barely felt it. Flavors could be a little more pronounced, but overall pretty good. Liked it better than the 1809 Berliner Weiss.

Thanks to SuzyGreenberg for tossing one of these my way and the fantastic ongoing trades.

Pours a light yellow with slight haze and a stark white head that has poor retention and leaves next to no lacing.

Nose smells close, a little weak. Some slight lactic notes, and an odd vegetal presence as well.

Hmmm, much better than the nose indicated. The tartness is actually fairly large for a berliner, nothing even close to approaching lamic status, but still, slightly high for the style. That hits first with a little bit of wheat flavor. Kind of a dirty almost cooked corn wheat flavor. Dry on the finish with the tartness peaking. Lacto notes and some of that vegetal wheat linger in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is ok, should have slightly higher carbonation stylewise, but its alright. Love the dryness, and the viscosity is about right.

Drinkability is pretty solid, but this is just a touch more tart than it should be, so that slightly hampers it for those that aren't sourheads. Other than that, the abv is accurate to tradition and makes this one pretty consumable.

Overall, this is a decent berliner wiesse. A few adjustments could make it much better, but as it sits it is good to see this style emerging more on the US made front. An ok representation of the style, and one i would maybe buy again. A nice beer.

Served in my New Belgium Globe glass. Poured a translucent pale yellow with copious tiny bubbles effervescing in solution. Pour generated a half inch, loose and frothy bright white head that quickly dispersed into a bubbly skim that coalesced around the edges. A strong doughy aroma was revealed off the cap pop with a lemony quality that follows. Taste consistent with nose with the breadiness lightly lingering at the finish. Mouthfeel is light in body, with a pleasant background carbonation and a dry finish. Pleasantly refreshing and enjoyable. Doesn't beat an 1809, but still very good.

I received this pour from the Bruery's tap line in their tasting room.

Appearance - A light hued pale straw-straw in color. The befitting level of carbonation deservedly awarded a 1 inch head to this brew. The layout of this beer hinted at a humble drinking experience which is precisely what I was in for!

Smell - Zesty indications of lemon and pale bread made way through my nose. In addition, the wheat presented itself accordingly as to leave this unadorned ale properly suited for its style.

Taste - Tart, first off! The omnipresent brettanomyces was well observed as I reminisced on some of the finer sour ales that I've consumed. The taste isn't convoluted, in the sense that the wheat and lemon bind nicely together to create outstanding freshness.

Mouthfeel - Sour initially, however the lemon and grainy components coalesce to make this one hell of a revitalizing brew! Lighter in body, but rather an irrelevant recollection as there is more than enough in the mouth for this berliner weisse to hold its own while ranking in at 3.1% ABV.

Drinkability - Commendable drinkability! This should be the archetype session beer for any occasion, although one might find it most refreshing during the warmer months. The diminutive volume of alcohol levitates the drinkability, too! I could see Hottenroth as a portal into the craft radius.

On-tap at Blue Palms in Hollywood. Served in a generic tulip glass.

Pale lemon/mustard body, rather murky overall. Very large active head at first, but as a draft-pour it was served with a finger on top that very rapidly recedes to a light dusting of ivory, then finally nothing whatsoever. Glows beautifully in natural light (i.e. not in this dimly lit bar).

Lemon is first and foremost in the aroma, though there is some suggestion of sour apple, wheat, and maybe iodine. Not really getting any Brett. notes or anything floral.

This tastes almost like a citrus-based cider: very crisp, with a sharp tart palate entry; filled out with a lactic flavor leading into a white bread finish. This reminds me very much of the edible stems of Bermuda Buttercup (aka sourgrass or more properly, Oxalis).

Very light bodied, but carbonation seems too low to me.

A refreshing sour beverage, which would serve as a nice base for a good quality flavored syrup (e.g. Monin) - a fairly successful example of a neglected style.

Drank "as is" (no syrups) - poured into glass chalice:

Pours clouded yellow with a well-retained head for the style. Vanishing lacing sticks.

The smell is bready - very - slightly moldy, and tart.

The taste is bready and tart. A bit of malt keeps tartness from being too much. Finishes with a funky, white grape-y dryness.

Aggressively carbonated, but retains a light body that is not too thin or watery.

Very drinkable - a nice, tart, brew. Something a bit "different", but still within style... A solid brew to pair with fish or chicken.

A-Lightly hazed pale golden kissed yellow color with a thin bright white head that diminished to a wispy veil and left spotty lace.

S-Bright lemon zing, Granny Smith apple, light apple cider vinegar and a touch of toasted biscuit.

T-Light lemon juice, lightly toasted biscuit and green apple zip. All somewhat light but certainly apparent.

M-Light bodied with a mineral water style of carbonation. Sharp and crisp with mild lingering tartness.

D-Good flavour, low ABV and a pleasant crispness. This isn't the best BW I have had, flavours are a bit light, I like a bit more zing/ bite in mine...but this would do if preferred brew were not available. Nice to see a domestic bottled BW though!

Draught at The Bruery's anniversary. Lightly hazy pale straw with a white head. Funky, tart, wheaty aroma with some apple. The flavor is mostly crisp lemony tartness with some wheat grain, a light acetic touch and tart pear and apple. Not intensely acidic, but I do have a high threshold for sour. Light bodied with crisp, ample carbonation. Great light and refreshing beer.

Only bruery beer I have ever liked. Only example of the style I have ever tried, so this may not be to style.

Appearance: Pale light straw gold, bit of haze. Big fizzy head that disappears quickly

Smell: Nice with a bit of funk, lightly sour. Not what I expected at all. Perhaps some cloves and cardemom.

Taste: Besides the finish tasting a bit too much like cherios, this is a tasty beer. Bit of cider to the lactic tartness. Quite quaffable, although a bit too bready.

Mouthfeel: Light, smooth, clean, crisp and refreshing.

Drinkability: Off the charts. I can't wait to go to have this over the summer.

I am surprised that there is not more talk/hype about this beer. While low in alcohol it is very different and full of character and flavor.
This is as nice a "drink" as it gets.

Lovely lightly cloudy (but without particulate) yellow with a thick, firm pure white head.

Nose is sour green apple with pure assertive white bread yeast, complex and layered. A bit of sour yogurt, sour milk nose although not unpleasant.

Mouthfeel is pleasantly sour and crisp, full body, flavors and texture.

Flavors are layered sour milk/yogurt with sweet lemon oil to a fresh lemonade flavor that goes a bit to sour milk/yogurt and pleasant citric green apple and lime.

Finish is clean, crisp, fresh and leaves a "sour salivation" in your mouth.

Extremely pleasant, satisfying and remarkably drinkable.

The Bruery is rapidly not only becoming one of my favorite breweries but is doing remarkably creative and bold brews of wonderful quality and character. That this 3.1% abv drink is so appealing is a tribute, along with the wonderful flavors and character. The bottle suggests flavored syrups for the beer and the Bruery, itself, will serve this one with syrups, if you want. Please, give it a shot straight-it's very good.

By the way, in my opinion this is one where the "bottle" is better than the "draft." Draft is less assertive, less extreme, "less" all around. Draft is still nice but go for the bottle on this one.

A capped 750ml bottle purchased at Abe's cold beer in Bethlehem for $8. Opened and poured into my 1809 goblet (you can pound nails into concrete with this glass). Appears a cloudy pale straw yellow color with about an inch of fizzy, quickly fading bone white foam. Nose and flavor consist of tart lemon juice, lightly toasted wheat, tart green apples, sparkling mineral water, the sourness is never overbearing. The body is rather light with decent carbonation levels. Nice stuff, although I prefer 1809 a tad more.

75cl bottle. Pours cloudy light yellow with a small white head that dies quickly. Little lacing. Smells citric and fruity; I would describe it more tangy than sour. Definite yeasty notes. Tastes quite sweet, actually, with a lot of wheat character and only mild tartnesss. Citrus. Lots of cereal grain. Light, borderline watery body, which is to be expected, but the carbonation is too low and doesn't really suite the beer. Definitely easy to drink, but I've certainly had better berliner weissebiers.

Shipped back from my San Diego trip (bought at South Bay). Poured from a 750ml capped bottle into a tulip. No dating info. Was a hazy pale straw color with lots of carb from the etching. No lacing. It had a fizzy white head that quickly evaporated into nothing.

The description, style and other reviews had me believing I was going to get some tart and sour in the aroma and taste but not in this one. The aroma was very subtle. Some sour and lemon but very faded. Very disappointing. The taste matched the aroma. Very muted sour and lemon flavors and not much else. Extremely watery. Almost like an iced lemonade that had all the ice melt into it. Mouthfeel was watery.

Overall, a very disappointing beer that continues my hit or miss from the Bruery (2 great and 2 so-so). I love sour beers so had high hopes for this one but not much here besides lemon tinged water. Can't really recommend. Rotation: not avail here. One and done as I didn't find much flavor to it.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip glass.

A- pours a pale, hazy yellow. Looks exactly like I poured a glass of lemonade. Produced a thin, half fingers width of white head. Dissipated instantly.

S- A very strong, wheat presence along with a hint of corn. Also notice some lemon in the background.

T- For the style, pretty damn solid. As in the aroma, wheat definitely is at the forefront. What I liked is that almost instantly a subtle sourness comes into play that just grows and grows until the finish. For simple ingredients and a simple beer, this is fantastic.

M- Thin, but well carbonated.

D- Probably the single most sessionable beer I have ever had in my life. Nothing else needs to be said.

Overall, this beer reaffirmed why berliner weisses are one of my favorite styles of beer. Simple, clean with a hint of sourness. I forgot to add...extremely sessionable.

Pours a very light gold, yellow in color. There's a dirty, thin head that forms on the pour.
Smell is yeasty, somewhat lemony and just a bit of smoke or burnt malt in the background.
Taste is much more of the same. And the initial flavors thru midway through each sip are very nice. But there's still this burnt, smoky grain flavor in the backend/finish that keeps getting my attention and detracting from the rest of the beer. If it weren't for this, this beer would be very enjoyable. As it is, it's still solid, but just can't focus on the rest of the beer, while I now that flavor is coming in the finish.

750ml bottle poured into tulip shaped glasses:

A: Fresh squeezed lemons with decent carbonation. Starts off with a towering white head that vanishes as quickly as it came, leaving little bubbles dancing around the top of the glass.

S: A barnyard funk, followed by a grassy smell, finishing with a splash of lemons and grapefruit.

T: Tingly and sour all over the palate making us salivate for more. Refreshing and citrus y, like a glass of cold water with lemon.

M: Light/medium body with pins and needles all over the inside of the mouth.

D: Great beer to enjoy on any occasion. Extremely low ABV like always for this style, making it a enjoyable session beer.

Got this bottle in a trade from Benanomyces. Thanks Ben for the chance to try this!

Pours a very hazy very light straw golden color. Very similar to a Witbier in look. Huge creamy white head with great retention. Leaves lots of lacing all over.

The nose is very strange. It's like a cross between wet moldy hay and stale wheat (or at least what I imagine stale wheat would smell like). Very barn-like, and not in a Brett way. It's not terrible, just not what I was expecting. I was expecting a more tart sour wheat aroma, but I didn't really get it.

The taste is a little better. Sour and tart notes hit you right away, leaving me wondering where they were in the nose. Smooth wheat finish, this is turning out good...why doesn't it smell like this...then it hits me. The aftertaste is that unpleasant wet hay character. It's not overpowering, but very subtle, and enough to annoy me. Drops the taste score some.

Mouthfeel is light with a crisp carbonation and smooth wheaty finish. Nice. Drinkability is ok, if not for that off taste I got, it would have been easier to drink. It also didn't help that I finished the 750 ml by myself.

Overall, not a bad beer. I know nothing of the style, and therefore don't know if that wet moldy hay/stale wheat character is supposed to be there, or an off taste developed somewhere along the line. I wish it was more tart and sour than it is. I'll have to have this agian, and others in the style, to find out if this is a good representation of the style, or if The Bruery put their own twist on it that I just don't care for.

Finally getting around to reviewing this one. Bought a bottle the other day at SouthBayDrugs. This is from the "tweaked" recipe, 2nd year of course since it wasn't bottled the first year. If I recall correctly the recipe was tweaked by adding some pedio to increase the sourness.

Used my Bruery tulip for this one. Pours a very pale straw yellow with fizzy bubbles racing to the top and forming almost two inches of egg-shell white colored foam on top. The head lasts a few moments but disappears almost completely but understandable for the style in the lack of hops, low protein amount, and high acidity level. I thought it would be a little more effervescent though. Still, solid looking Berliner.

There's a musty wheat aroma at first with some fruity chardonnay notes. Hints of graininess, wheat, and a sour apple note in the background that gets caught up in the back of my throat. Nice light and lively fruity aromas, mostly sour apples and pears with a bit of orange. Increasingly sharp lactic aroma but it smells clean and somewhat kept in control. At times there appears to be a slight buttery note near the back.

Big wheat and grain flavor with more of that "mustiness" coming through. Notes of apples and pears in the finish with hints of vanilla. The second sip seems a little less shocking to the palate with a mineral/club soda flavor and a bit of lime too. Some straw-like flavor later on and the finish seems to get drier too. I'm not sure, there seems to me like something is missing in this one. A touch of a cider flavor near the finish. I don't know, sometimes in the aftertaste I get an almost buttery flavor, like if it's oak aged or something.

Moderate and lively carbonation making it very refreshing and thirst quenching. Light on the tongue and a nice tart dryness in the end. Nice summer drink, glad this style is brewed somewhat locally and available in bottles.

Great to see this beer make it all the way to Masachusetts. I bought this bottle at Winchester Wine and Spirits. Poured in to a white wine glass, it actually looks a lot like white wine. It is a hazy golden straw color, and does not foam up all that much. Smell is very similar to a Sauv Blanc or perhaps a Riesling in that it is tart and has some grape character to it. Very tart to start, with a nice backing dash of carbonation. Very light in body, I would recommend serving this one cold, as it is simply not as refreshing when warm. The low alcohol level makes this one you could drink quite a few of, however, some may be put off by the sour nature of it. This is a great Berliner that competes with the German examples in many ways. I might save a bit of my bottle to see how it does with some of the syrup added. Cheers

I'm pouring the contents of this 750 into a Reidel Extreme Riesling glass. Yougoddaproblemwiddat?!

Well the first pour has a body colored like a lighter Reisling - almost Champagne-like. However, the yeasty wisps that pass for a head on a typical Berliner Weisse are present here. Not too heavy on lacing or carbonation. The second pour yields more of a shallow, light, lemon-meringue head with almost a slight bluish tint. Still not a great deal of staying power, resulting in those wispy trails.

This has a much stronger depth than your average Berliner Weisse. It's almost a Belgian-ish yeast strain, along with great lemony citrus sour notes. It may be power of suggestion, but there are some sweet Riesling notes and almost a Belgian pale malt/wheat deal going on.

This isn't my wheelhouse. I enjoy the style but just don't do enough of them. I like the piney mild hop and light malt backbone of this - it's much more deep than others in the style - it is light has hell but has a great deal of soul. The citrus isn;t overly puckering and blends well with the wheat and surprisingly spritely carbonation.

Palate feel is a little lighter than average for the style but what makes up for it is the depth of the grains here. The citrus lemon sour is muted with warmth and continues to get help from the wheat on the finish, which is enjoyable yet benign.

This drinks reasonably well; it may be a little TOO benign in spots while the grains have a little bit of heft that can be filling. Nevertheless, this is quite an enjoyable beverage. Wish I had more of this over the summer.

From a 750 ml bottle. Very pale yellow and cloudy. A big fluffy head turned into a few bubbles left on top. This is style is really different, and I have yet to try one with the raspberry or woodruff syrup but I like them as they are.
The smell is all tart citrus.
The taste is the same tart citrus. Comparing this to some of the other Berliner Weisse beers I have tried this one is not quite as tasty. This one could have used a one of the syrups more so than the others. But is still a very tasty beer.
The 750 ml bottle was great for a glass each for two. Of all the different beers I've had my wife try this is one style she really enjoys.
