Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip.

A: Really hazy, straw yellow body; huge white head that receded quickly..no lace, no surprise.

S: Yeasty and bready, lactic tartness was pronounced; light hints of citrus, banana, and other fruitiness.

T: Mouth puckering tartness right in the front. Sour apple, yeasty notes and breadiness are all apparent. Some citrus, berry fruit and banana in the background. Finish is acidic and dry.

M: Light, and highly carbonation.

O: Refreshingly easy to drink. Seems simple in description, but so complex on the palate. Low ABV...you won't get bombed on this, this is a beer to drink simply to enjoy a great beer. Recommended.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a snifter. Purchased in Attleboro, MA.

Appearance - pours a super hazy, sunny yellow body with a decent sized white head that reduces fairly quickly to leave no lacing.

Markell - quite yeasty, bready upfront, tart citrusy, honey, banana, light fruit on the follow through.

Taste - big green apple, tart lemon-lime, raw yeast, bread, berries, banana. Follow through is acidic and dry, lemony.

Mouthfeel- high carbonation, light body. Refreshing

What a nice, easy, complex beer. Nice flavor nice price, easily drinkable. Recommended.

Hottenroth feels like The Bruery going hard on some William Eggleston grind -- full spectrum of emotional color here. Nestled amongst the many hued sunsets and supermarket promontories and pre-war lamps tossing their many hued lights there is something pristine/sinister that feels utterly appropriate and inextricable from the total composition. A real glassfull of considerate juxtaposition and moral play.

Pours hazy light golden yellow in color

Smell has boys of lemon, sweet tarts, and some light grainy aromas.

Taste is moderately tart with nice candy like sweetness and a lemony tartness to balance.

Light bodied and sticky from the sour.

Overall very well balanced and drinkable. Perfect amount of sweetness and tartness

750ml bottle, cracked before the BBQ festivities start up for our nation's birthday.

This beer pours a rather hazy, pale golden straw colour, with a fistful of puffy, frothy, and tightly foamy eggshell white head, which leaves pretty much nil in terms of lacing.

It smells of sharp, tart white wine, the derived vinegar, a musty funk, sour lemon, edgy wheat grain, and a mild earthy grassiness. The taste is actually a fair bit less tart, but still replete with lemon zest, white wine vinegar, crab-apple, gritty and grainy wheat malt, a soft barnyard funk, wet grass, and an earthy yeastiness.

The carbonation is quite robust, in a mouth-filling frothy sort of manner, the body medium-light in weight, and generally a bit too tart to be deemed particularly smooth, yet an airy creaminess arises over time. It finishes dry, dry, dry, the fruit, yeast, and wheat all colluding and conspiring as such.

Well-rounded in its tart and funky base parameters, and overall, a decently drinkable, and even refreshing at times version of the style - I've not had many chances to try the real deal, so take that with a grain of salt (sounds like something that's actually in this beer). I suppose I should try mixing this as is typically suggested, but for some reason I'm all out of woodruff.

Pours a cloudy deep straw color with a white fizzy head. The aroma is sour and fruity, even had a ketchup like smell. In the taste, lactic tartness sour lemon, cooked veggie and stale wheat bread. The tart, refreshing nature of this beer is quite remarkable, as well as the amount of flavor in a 3.1% ABV beer. Medium bodied ale with a high level of carbonation. Overall, this is a good example of Berliner Weisse, not the cleanest, but has unique character. Worth sharing and a good choice for those fond of sour ale.

Poured into a nonic pint...

A. Pours a straw gold, the light casting a distinct haze through the beer. Three fingers of fabulous white head recede disappointingly fast to the faintest trace of carbonation. Bubbles steadily pop up from the bottom of the glass and to the top. Lacing is practically non-existent.

S. Lemon zest, barnyard funk, cracked wheat, mild herbal hops, white vinegar.

T. Follows the nose closely, with big doses of lemon and strawberry juice, plenty of funkiness, and a huge kiss of sour pucker. Faint grassy notes from mild hopping and an almost creamy lacto sweetness. The sourness is pretty intense here for the mid, but the finish tones it way down and fades to a sweet, crackery, mildly dry and doughy resolution.

M. Highly carved and very sour through the mid. Fairly sweet on the palate, though the sour blisters the tongue just a touch. This is offset ever so slightly by lacto notes which add creaminess and balance.

O. An outstanding Berliner, one of the best I have had. It certainly leans towards the "sour" side of the style, with emphasis taken away from the biscuity, wheat qualities traditionally found in these beers. Wheat notes are there, but the early mid through the finish is one big puckery kiss of lemon, strawberry, and even some tart cherry. Fairly complex flavor profile for the style. Still, some traditionalists won't enjoy the acidity in play here. Nevertheless, I dig this beer quite a bit. Packing an inordinate amount of flavor, pucker, and complexity into a tight little sub-4% ABV package, The Bruery's Hottenroth is a welcome addition to my summer lineup.

Poured from the 750ml. bottle into an Erdinger Weisebier glass

a: Clear urine gold with an enormous white head which receded quickly to almost nothing, no lacing.

s: Pungent ripe or overripe fruit.

t: Very sour overripe fruit. Bitter finish.

m: Light plus.

o: Might have been a bad bottle, but the label does say it is a "Berlin Style Tart Wheat Ale." And tart it is, to the point of making your mouth pucker and your eyes close and your face wince. The label also says "Sour=Yum." Not here. An $8 drain pour for me.

Slight vinegary aroma, which is slightly in the taste and mouthfeel. No lacing.Body light yellow, hazy.
Flavor is very tart and lemony, very much a mouth puckering sour, but light with no alcohol, no hops, no malt. Which isn't bad at all.

This a very tart, refreshing Berliner Weise. Some earthy notes, and tastes on this beer.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/4/2013. Pours moderately hazy pale straw color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with poor retention, that reduces to nothing. Minimal lacing and moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour green apple, lemon, pear, grape, wheat, hay, straw, vinegar, clove, herbal, white wine, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast notes with slight malt presence; with great strength. Taste of big sour apple, lemon, pear, grape, hay, straw, wheat, vinegar, clove, musty funk, white wine, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour apple, lemon, pear, grape, vinegar, hay, straw, wheat, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, complexity, and moderate robustness of fruity/funky and tart yeast flavors with light malt presence; with a nice crisp balance of acidity and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately acidic mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 3.1%. Overall this is a highly excellent Berliner weisse! All around great complexity, balance, and robustness of fruity/tart/funky yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Appearance: a dark orangish yellow. very bubbly with some ivory colored foam created but none sticks around. very hazy and opaque. not a very appetizing look

Smell: sour, lemon, and a grassiness

Taste: opens up with slightly mouth puckering lemon. some wheaty and grassy characteristics but those are muted by the lemon. strong acidity.

Mouthfeel: very effervescent, medium strength sour and slightly heavy for only 3%. not as refreshing as i'd like and very acidic

Overall: I love the idea of this beer, a 3% refreshing sour beer for the summer. but the execution falls short for me. It doesn't look very good, the smell comes off too grassy, and its overly acidic

Pours an interesting looking hazy straw color with very minimal head but lots of fine suspended sediment particles. Smell is lemon, yeast, and tonic. You can smell the sour. Taste is very light, like drinking tonic water with lemon zest, some grassy notes, and wheat. Decently sour, but not puckeringly so. Feel is great! This is light, refreshing, easy to dink with high carbonation that enhances the sour taste. Great beer, super easy to drink. Good pizza beer.

This is a very underrated beer. I think because of the price point and ABV level. Everyone seems to give big points to rare beers just because they are rare and high in ABV. I think this is my summer fishing beer for the future. I drank a lot of this. It has a perfect amount of sour to it and drinks very refreshing. I also enjoyed the nose a lot. Next time you see it give it a try. It is a wonderful Berliner Weiss.

boy was I reluctant to pay 9 bucks for 12 ounces of 3% beer, but the bruery is the bruery, and I am a sucker, so I let it rip down at jake's in downtown Littleton. not as pale as most berliners, its got just a hint of darker malt color to it and a lacey little white head. smells lacto sour, lemons and acid, but I smell more than wheat as a grain. maybe a touch of rye or something in the copper family making it just a little more interesting than the generic. wild yeast and bacterial fermentation are obvious from the outset. citric funk dominates above the lightest grain bill ever. what I like though is that touch of something other than white wheat. it gives the beer a desirability all of its own, I don't need woodruff or cherry syrup for this, I want it on its own. ultra light in body, carbonated like soda, this is a really odd sensation. so acidic and low in alcohol it would be a chore to get drunk from it, but I guess that's the point. authentic with a twist, another winner from the bruery.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into Duvel Tulip glass. I believe the date etched on the bottle reads 3/25/13, but a bit difficult to make out. Served straight up. I don't mess with syrup.

A: Suprisingly clear golden-yellow hue with 2 fingers of clean white head that fizzles away over approximately 2 minutes to nothing. Looked excellent for about 30-60 seconds, then somewhat lackluster. Now looks like apple juice with some film on top. Nice hue though.

S: Tart fruit, notable funk. Lemon.

T: Sour immediately with a relatively bold tartness compared to the handful of Berliner Weissen I've had previously (though not recently). Lingering tartness coats the tongue. Not particularly dry, but certainly not sweet either. Lemon juice type flavors predominate. Limited in terms of complexity, but tastes pretty good, I'd say!

M: Light and effervescent. Nice. There's a surge of salivation about 5 seconds after a swig, which is something I love about the sour styles.

O: Not blown away, but I enjoyed this. More sour than the German versions I've tried and not a whole lot of typical wheat smells/flavors. Not terribly complex or particularly pretty to look at, but drinks nicely. Refreshing.

750 ml to a snifter, no bottle date

Pours a cloudy yellow/ light tan (5% trans) with a finger of while foam that died down pretty quick. Moderate carbonation stemming from the sides of the glass with some yeast settling on the bottom

Smell of tart vinegar, lemon grass and a touch of apple and citrus, wheat malts, a good amount of funk. Pretty simple, yet pretty good

Taste is upfront sour lemon, followed by a blast of funk and light wheat malt, and finishes with a nice sweet wheaty apple after taste

Feel is a moderate/strong sour with an incredibly light body. Finishes a bit wet, very clean and crisp

Overall impressed given the abv. Nice light sour, not a bad deal for $8. Very ideal session bier

T-Almost like a sweet tart, rather lemony, good deal of wheat. SLight grass. Ends with a nice, well balanced, tartness.

O-The low alcohol content is phenomenal. A good beer at an amazing ABV.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into an Upland pint glass.

A: Pours a very, very hazy yellow to light gold. Forms a half-finger of white head that fades quickly, and low visible carbonation.

S: Tart, lemony, and a bit funky and yeasty. Wheat malt with some grainy character, and a bit grassy.

T: Tart, lactic, and moderately sour, a bit funky, lemon citrus, wheat bread, some grass and funk. The graininess in the malts fades before the swallow though, leaving a clean, dry, tart lactic character in the hang.

M: Light-bodied. No alcohol to speak of. The carbonation sensation is somewhat lower than it should be for style, but it's far from flat.

O: Nice, well-done berliner with a restrained level of tartness. It's not in the same class as Tartare, or the fruited Florida-weisses available. But a really enjoyable drink nevertheless. Recommended.

A: Opaque lemon yellow. No head. Light lacing.

S: Lemons rule. Astringent. Apples merge in.

T: Tart as hell. Lemon heavy. Dry, citrus-y. Lemonade with a kick.

O: A great summer beer. Very low alcohol. Sessionable.

A: A pale yellow beer with very good clarity. There head is made of thick dense white white foam but dissipates after a minute.

S: A tart, acidic nose with a moderate fruit component of light colored fruit mostly of an apple peel like character and peach. A medium barnyard Brett funk.

T: A medium juicy tartness with light fruit component. There is very little perceived hops bitterness, no flavor hops of note and almost no malt sweetness. The balance is moderately tart. The finish is very dry.

M: A light bodied beer with a medium-strong level of carbonation.

O: A light, crisp, low-alcohol beer with a refreshing sourness. It's not a complex beer but they style is geared for that.

clean straw yellow pour with 2 fingers of fluffy white head which dissipated quickly. no lacing left behind. smells tart, acidic, and of wheat bread.. lemony. oh that's nice! a delicious beer, lots of acidity from the lactobacillus, a weird overtone of funky farmhouse style flavor, wheat, lemons.. a light, crisp, and refreshing beer. nice and sour/tart, but also a fairly complex tasting beer for such a low abv and the style!

i really do appreciate a lot of the beers the bruery releases, but they should really consider doing 4pk releases or even 2pk of 12oz bottles. sometimes, you feel obliged to drink the full bottle in one sitting when you don't have any friends around.. and even a light beer like this - feels like too much for the palate for one to drink all by themselves. a great berliner weiss, for sure, but i'd rather have multiple servings of it in smaller quantities.

From a 750 ml bottle into a pint glass.

A-The brew is much cloudier than most Berliners, but still light straw/yellow in color. The head is pretty short and quick to fade. No lacing. Surprisingly still-looking in the glass.

S-The smell is very tart and lactic, even compared against other Berliners. I get some lemon and a funky, earthy, spicy wheat. Good intensity, if a bit simple.

T-The taste, like the smell, is massively tart. There is more doughy/bready malt flavor than most beers of the style, but the big lactic tartness makes for a pleasing, drinkable balance. Lemon is the primary flavor, but a funky, earthy wheat is also present.

M-The feel is a bit heavy for the style and the carbonation is a little soft and fine, but the brew is not thick or dense.

O-This is an interesting, flavorful take on the Berliner style. The lemony sourness is quite puckering, but it works well against the full body of this beer. The brew packs a lot of flavor for just over 3% and doesn't need any syrup to keep it interesting. That being said, this Berliner is the lightest or most refreshing I have had because of the big taste and body.
