Bottle number 194 of 456. Hazy orange and amber color with a fleeting white head. Big vanilla and bourbon aroma with bready pale malt and spices. Medium body and barely carbonated. Sweet, strong whiskey vanilla flavors dominate, with light pit fruit flavors in the background. Very different from the non barrel aged Levuds. More American strong ale than Belgian SA.

What I got from this is bourbon taste, understated carbonation, a light brown flavour. Kind of didn't work but not horrible. The bourbon was not overpowering, but the bomber was not finishable. Sweet bourbon in the nose. I would have liked more of the golden ale to have come out, with its yeastiness , and some complexity.

Big thanks to Joey for helping get a bottle of this one. I was thrilled to get it when it arrived and figured it would be the perfect nightcap for a special night, well that night was Thanksgiving, so I chose to go forward with this one. Served chilled and poured into a snifter, this one was consumed on 11/26/2008.

The pour was pretty nice, rich brown color with a decent amount of haziness to it. Smooth, velvet like tan head crept up on the top of the glass and settled down nicely into a cushion that hung around on the top for what seemed like forever. Nice coating of side glass lacing in it as well.

The aroma was charged with vanilla and bourbon smells. Rich notes of bourbon and a light spiciness were all dancing around a nice grain base and loads of light bready notes. Interesting mixture here as well, the bourbon was much harsher at first, then it ended up being as it warmed. It got much deeper as the palate expanded. Up next was a nice sipper if I ever had one. Rich tones of bourbon and vanilla wash over the tongue on the first sip. Nice and sweet with a wonderful texture to it. This was very solid here. Nice light spice notes to it now as well coming through. Huge flavor here, though the original grain flavor of the batch one is still apparent. Smooth, nicely carbonated body with rich notes abounding in it.

Overall a very solid barrel aged beer, not the best but a definite contender as far as I am concerned. I would have no issues at all with trying this one again any day of the week.

Pours an orange amber color with a dabbling of head and a meager ring of microbubbles. Slight cloudiness and a few strands of bubbles rising. Interesting to start with a golden beer in a barrel, so to end up with a darker orangey color shows just what comes out of that barrel in three short months.

The nose has butter, apples, sherry, shrubbery and earth. Flavor is loaded with buttery caramel balanced with a touch of bitter earth and nuanced by a subtle reminder of calvados and vanilla. It is quite full bodied, seems to have very low carbonation at first, but as it opens up I sense the bubbles more and more. While a BSPA tends to have heavier carbonation, the flavors here contrast greatly from most examples, so it tends to work. An interesting brew, which was quite experimental as well being the first batch ever produced at The Bruery. It gives a hint of creativity that would soon be revealed to the world. Split this with some friends and cheers to The Bruery for bringing some much needed respect in the beer world to the OC.

2008 Biergotter Tasting, Day 2: Stouts and Belgians. i contributed this one, purchased at the brewery. they actually didn't have any labeled bottles on hand, but patrick was nice enough to grab 4 bottles, label and mark them as the barrel-aged version, then sign and number them (and i ended up with #3 of the 4). he and tyler signed all our bottles and gave similar numbers to the others too.

750ml bottle, #3/4. sampled nov 28/08.

pours crystal clear deep orange with no head. the last glass i poured ended up with a few chunks, but the other glasses had at most a slight haze from the pour.

aroma is great. bourbon. vanilla. raw oak. cracker. white bread. bit of butterscotch. bit of toffee. the fruity character still comes through, complimenting the base beer.

taste is great, excellent even. light alcohol. great bourbon and vanilla character. caramel. toffee. butterscotch. cracker and white bread. light belgian spice accented by great barrel character. nice light citrus character.

mouthfeel is great. silky smooth with just over medium carbonation. medium body.

drinkability is great. the base beer was quite good, but the barrel has made it even better. great stuff!

Consumed 10/12/08.

Pours a cloudy medium yellow. Minimal carbonation leads to a little white head and some lacing.

Aroma is strong, sweet malt mingled with bourbon.

Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side, and lacking in carbonation.

Flavor is overwhlemingly bourbon. Slight sweetness with a citric character struggled for palate attention. As compared to the standard batch of Levud's, this is lacking in complexity and is not as satisfying to drink.

I'm a fan of the Bruery, but this one isn't one of my favorites.

A big thanks to Gil for sharing this beer at t0rin0cantsail.

A: The pour is a clear golden color with minimal carbonation and a fleeting white head.

S: A wonderful and well integrated bourbon aroma to this beer with sweet vanilla and oak notes that blend in quite nicely with the sweet honey and caramel aromas of the beer. Some sweet fruits such as pears and golden apples, too.

T: The bourbon flavor is nowhere nears pronounced as I would have expected given the flavor. Sweet caramel and toffee malts along with hints of spice, pears, and apples. Subtle vanilla notes and a touch of booze.

M: The body is medium with a carbonation on the low end of the spectrum--a bit slick.

D: I was actually quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this beer. The nose was quite pleasant but the flavor (unfortunately) didn't fully match up. Still a nice beer, though.

I'm a little late on some of these reviews.

Pours a vibrent, glowing orange, with a thick cream head that does fade eventually. The colour is awesome.

Lots of spices, vanilla, some wood character, boozy bourbon, some pepper, pear, and apricot seeing to be on the yeast character. A little malt, caramel sweetness, and a clean and subtle alcohol in the nose that seems to come across as fruity red berries.

I figured the alcohol would be more present, but it does just create a nice warmth and fruity characters. The spices are present, I have to say I feel like I'm getting a little caramel and vanilla from this. There is a nice present earthy character, and the barrel aging produces a nice bourbon sweetness that also seems to translate into a syrupy tartness on the back on the tongue. It's very balanced considering.

For the alcohol it is very clean. Lots of residual sugars, just lingering nicely on the palate. A great full bodied beer, and I think it is something worth seeking.

I think I may prefer the non-barrel aged, it just seemed more drinkable in the long run.

750 ml bottle, grub purchased this one at the Bruery, Pat and Tyler were great hosts and pulled out a couple of these for us to take. Day 2 of epic DrJay visit tasting, grub provided this one.

Pours a mostly clear orange/copper, maybe a touch of haziness, no head forms, a few bubbles and no lace. Smell is great, bourbon, caramel, alcohol, lots of fruit, pineapple and mango, some oak and vanilla, strawberries and melon, very nice. Taste is similar, some nice butterscotch/toffee up front, bourbon hit, vanilla and oak, mangoes, orange, melons, alcohol, more fruit, more bourbon and a nice oaky finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice stuff, the bourbon barrel complements the beer very well, real smooth and drinkable. Thanks Russ!

I first had this beer at the Stone 12th anniversary fest a few weeks back. This review is based on a bottle purchased from O'brien's on a Friday afternoon at the beginning of labor day weekend, 2008.

The beer pours a dark orange with no head to speak of. The aroma is of pear and lots of bourbon. I read another review that mentions no bourbon aroma and all I can think is that our bottles were much, much different. The bourbon was very apparent in this beer and was the primary aroma I perceived. Other aromas were of oak and spiced apple cider.

The taste is very, very bourbony and malty sweet. It tastes like pear and oak, and there is little to no bitterness in this beer. There is a long, mellow, bourbon alcohol finish that is very pleasant.

The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a low level of cabonation. The 11% abv is not well hidden, but that is in no way a negative for this beer.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky light brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drop into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, caramel, toffee, bourbon, and some cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with raisin, fruit, bourbon, and slight cardboard flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is fairly drinkable but noticeably oxidized at this point.

RBSG09 bottle at the grand tasting. Pours dark gold with a diminishing white head. Nose is sweet and inviting, lots of oaky vanilla and caramel, tropical fruits, wood. Flavor is loaded with vanilla, brown sugar, fruit salad, toasty malt, honey, bourbon. Very sweet but completely delicious in sample size. I love this stuff.

Bottle #100 out of 456....

A: Very murky orange color beer with absolutely no head.

S: A champagne/wine type smell with lots of fruity flavors.

T: You can definitely tell its been aged in bourben barrels...and its almost like I'm drinking an okay wine. Not bad...but not great.

M: Light with almost no carbonation.

D: Not very easy to drink...one glass is sufficient.

Overall: I wouldn't say its a bad beer, but its not a great beer. About an average beer. My suggestion would be to order this beer if you want a hybrid between a beer and wine. Its just not my thing....and I think you have to be in the mood for this type of beer.

2008 Biergotter Tasting - Day 2. grub supplied this one.
Bright amber orange with just the slightest haze. No head whatsoever. The barrel aging really dominated the aroma. Lots of bourbon and oak, buttery, vanilla, slight cheese. The base beer was still there with its fruity, bready character, but was muted somewhat. Smelled amazing. Great balance in the flavour with the bourbon character complementing the base beer's profile. Caramel sweetness was more pronounced. Vanilla and oak mingled nicely with citrus and bread crust. Light alcohol. Medium bodied with lowish carbonation, quite smooth. Good stuff. Thanks grub!

From a green 750ml bottle 167 of 456- Pours a slightly cloudy orange/yellow with a small thin white head. Smells mostly of strong bourbon notes with just a tad of alcohol coming through the nose. First sip is sweet and bourbony that turns rather bitter. The mouthfeel is poor and way under carbonated. A bitter finish adds to the experience. Some hops come through. The malt backbone is slightly weak. The 11% ABV is well hidden.

Bottle Number 141 / 456, 2nd RB Tucson Tasting, Sampled September 2008
This has a low level of visual carbonation, that produces no head. The beer is a light amber hue, that is noticeably darker than the non-barrel aged version. Aromas of Bourbon dominate the nose, but it still is pretty smooth; notes of vanillin, toasted coconut, nose-warming alcohol and a light fruitiness that injects itself at times are all noticeable, but somehow the aroma seems almost too subtle for a beer of this strength.

This is sweeter tasting than I expected, but the alcohol really boosts the perceived sweetness. This has lots of fruit flavors that form a mix of apple and substantial brandy-like notes that are also accented by oak notes of vanillin and lightly spicy oak. This has a hot alcohol finish to it as well as a bit of sharpness. A bit of oxidation seems to play a role here and there are some definite nutty flavors with an accentuating, light sherry note and something a bit like Amaretto. This has a very light carbonation, but it still has a soft prickle to it as it flows across the tongue. This is quite light for a beer of this strength and is in fact quite quaffable.

This is a very soft beer (in both flavor, body and aroma). It is actually amazingly subtle for a beer of this strength. It is almost not beer like; the Bourbon barrel and fruity Belgian notes combine to make this something else. It is sort of a fruity, Belgian-esque something-or-other. Definitely worth the experience and interesting.

A: Pours a nice shade of orange with a rather thin white head. No retention or lace noted.

S: Aromas of sweet candy malt. Caramel and toffee mostly. The barrel is there in a big way. Lots of oak and vanilla.

T: Sweet malts, sweet dark fruit, Tons of wood, vanilla, and a bit of booze. Pretty good.

M: Rather full in body. Bold rich and sweet from start to finish.

D: Not the most drinkable, but I did like this one.
