Bottle (2011)

The Bruery RS Initiation Party 2012

(Aged for 1 year)

A dark brown and cherry red with glowing red edges. Thin half-inch light tan head atop. This leaves dots of stick on the glass.

Acidic, aromatic sour. There's plenty of sweet fruit aromas, particularly cherries and grapes, along with a mellow woody aroma, and some mild chocolate.

A delicious sour with lots of cherry and wood character with a lingering dark chocolate note on the finish. Delightful.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A fantastic blend. I sincerely wish I could drink this whenever I chose.

Pours out a thinner brown than Black Tuesday, certainly the Oude Tart makes up the larger portion of this beer. Thin to almost no head to it, so thin, the color seemed opaque.

Aroma was dazzling, the best of the best, bourbon barrel aroma, chewy chocolate, vanilla, sour red fruit.

Taste was amazing, again, all the qualities of Black Tuesday (without the heat) and the best qualities of Oude Tart. Certainly the sourness is not as high as Oude Tart to itself, but this 'melange' of beers works oh so nicely, no one aspect of either beer dominates, other than the appearance is closer to BT. Really appeared to be more of a Cherry Chocolate Rain melange with Oude Tart (or Oude Tart w/ sour cherry) more than anything, cherry flavor was very well integrated here.

Really enjoyed this on tap at the initiation party, waited to have a larger sampling of it before I wrote a review, because I seemed to be in the minority of people who thought it was excellent. Now, after a much larger sampling size in a different format, I'm very confident, this is an excellent beer aimed at my tastes.

Funny, I thought Black Tuesday was so awesome (and still do) and yet, every variation of it, I've loved even more. Just keep cranking 'em out Bruery, love 'em.

Thanks to Scalene for this one. By way of light whale BIF 2. Shared with capra12 and schen9303. Reviewed from notes.

Melange 1 looks pretty standard for a strong ale. Low carbonation, little head, with patchy and near no lace but nice legs. Nice dark color with a reddish tint though.

Nose is acetone, vinegar, citrus, and chocolate. I can't get much else from this one as the acetone is very off-putting and covers all the other flavors. Its aromatic, which is good, but the aroma itself isn't the greatest.

Beer is tart citrus, vinegar, chocolare, and ascetic red fruit. Taste almost completely Oude Tart like but with an infusion of roasted malt and chocolate that oddly, doesn't add much to the flavors but instead, enhances the vingary aspects of the beer. Not a successful blend in my opinion.

Beer is medium bodied and oily and silky in the mouth and goes down filmy and smooth with a messy finish and an aftertaste that lingers. Not as heavy as most other Strong Ales I've had but still pretty good.

This is another confused beer. Surprisingly, the Oude Tart flavors almost completely take over the robust Black Tuesday ones. I'm not a huge fan of sour dark beers and this doesn't chance my mind one bit. Too much sour and not enough stout in this one. I'm glad to have had this but not nearly worth the trouble.
