Mélange #1 was the first in our line of barrel aged beer blends and continues to be one of our favorites. A curious blend of our bourbon barrel aged stout, Black Tuesday, along with our Flemish-style sour red ale, Oude Tart, this beer is unique and delightful. Forging flavors of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee along with notes of leather and dark fruit, both the full bodied essence of the bourbon barrel aged ale and the sour quality of our wild ale are present in this well rounded beer.

Mélange #1 was first released in a bottle in 2011, but was actually first served as cask ale back in 2008.

Bottle (2011)

The Bruery RS Initiation Party 2012

(Aged for 1 year)

A dark brown and cherry red with glowing red edges. Thin half-inch light tan head atop. This leaves dots of stick on the glass.

Acidic, aromatic sour. There's plenty of sweet fruit aromas, particularly cherries and grapes, along with a mellow woody aroma, and some mild chocolate.

A delicious sour with lots of cherry and wood character with a lingering dark chocolate note on the finish. Delightful.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A fantastic blend. I sincerely wish I could drink this whenever I chose.

Pours out a thinner brown than Black Tuesday, certainly the Oude Tart makes up the larger portion of this beer. Thin to almost no head to it, so thin, the color seemed opaque.

Aroma was dazzling, the best of the best, bourbon barrel aroma, chewy chocolate, vanilla, sour red fruit.

Taste was amazing, again, all the qualities of Black Tuesday (without the heat) and the best qualities of Oude Tart. Certainly the sourness is not as high as Oude Tart to itself, but this 'melange' of beers works oh so nicely, no one aspect of either beer dominates, other than the appearance is closer to BT. Really appeared to be more of a Cherry Chocolate Rain melange with Oude Tart (or Oude Tart w/ sour cherry) more than anything, cherry flavor was very well integrated here.

Really enjoyed this on tap at the initiation party, waited to have a larger sampling of it before I wrote a review, because I seemed to be in the minority of people who thought it was excellent. Now, after a much larger sampling size in a different format, I'm very confident, this is an excellent beer aimed at my tastes.

Funny, I thought Black Tuesday was so awesome (and still do) and yet, every variation of it, I've loved even more. Just keep cranking 'em out Bruery, love 'em.

Large shared 2014 bottle.
Dark red brown body. Clear with a good if bubbly off-white head.
Somewhat unappealing funky aroma.
Taste: Complex, moderately tart, strongly flavored.

Thick, viscous hybrid Black Tuesday / Oude Tart Sour? Both beers on their own are delicious and world class. This was all sorts or wrong. A muddled mess whereas no flavors from each beer complimented the other. Horrible mouthfeel for any addition of brett to a beer. Argueably the worst craft offering I've had to date.
