Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the "pumpkin" beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup, and fermented with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this bold and spicy beer is perfect on a cold autumn evening.

A: Light golden color. Goldfish and clear.

S: Strong honey. A resemblance of mead.

T: Starts with honey and yam and finishes with baked beans. Yes..I can taste baked beans.

M: Light, fruity but slightly viscous.

O: A good beer from The Bruery. I'm glad they tried something different for their fall seasonal..not sure it really beat the good ol' pumpkin ale though. It definitely got very sweet towards the end. Good beer overall.

2010 vintage poured into a snifter.

A -- Pours a deep reddish brown with one finger of off-white head. Head fades pretty quickly leaving only small spots of lacing.

S -- Brown sugar, cinnamon and other spices up front. Also some vanilla and bready malts. Smells good. A little sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.

T - A bit of candi sugar, brown sugar and maple-glazed yams followed by a significant spice presence. Cinnamon and nutmeg stand out. Similar to the smell, there is some sweetness, but this wasn't nearly as sweet as I thought it might be. I really enjoyed the taste.

M - Medium/full mouthfeel that is a bit syrupy. Finishes pretty dry from the spices.

O- I haven't had this fresh, but with more than a year on it, this is a very enjoyable beer on a cold winter night.

750 ml botle pours a murky copper body with a large beige head that retains poorly. Subsequent pours reveal a powdery sediment that looks like spice additions.

Aroma is heavy on the spices, lots of nutmeg and ginger. Yeasty esters are also prominent. A vegetal note that seems more pumpkin than yams is underneath.

Medium bodied mouthfeel has a Belgian yeasty character.

Taste finds the nutmeg and ginger spiciness once again leading the show. Vegetal character still screams pumpkin. Molasses is not noticed, but the maple syrup emerges nicely as it warms. Some herbal hop bitterness isn't bashful, and provides some good balance. Some warming alcohol in the finish.

I expected this one to be a malt bomb. Far from it, however! It ends up evenly balanced and is an intriguing sipper to usher in the changing od the autumn leaves.

Large bottle, w/o any freshness info. Pours dark brown and murky, dark khaki head, moderate collar and fairly minor spotty lacing. Spiced up nose, with sweet malts, and vanilla also coming to the party. Thanksgiving spices, sweat potatos, pumpkin, plenty of dark and sweet malts floating around. Rich, sweet, nice for fall, warming and tasty. Perhaps too sweet for my tastes, but still a nice fall offering from Bruery. Has thanksgiving dinner desserts written all over it.

The Beers of California

#98

Freshness Date: None

A: Deep amber brown with an effervescent head of off white to khaki foam which dissipates to a thin layer that then slowly fades to a cling on the glass.

S: The spice complexity jumps out with highlights of maple syrup from a base of yam sweetness. The sweetness to build as the beer warms.

T: The allspice and cinnamon build as the molasses and maple syrup join in an attempt to bring a balancing sweetness. The yams add a sweet carbohydrate, slightly candied foundation to the brew. There is very minimal earthy hop bitterness. The yeastiness comes through in the end with a moderate amount of booziness.

M: The beer has a light to medium feel with similar amounts of carbonation.

O: The spices shine here but in the end overwhelm the remaining components of this beer, particularly the candied yam presence. The flavors here don't quite combine into a synergistic whole. A laudable attempt at creating a novel fall brew but overall can use some polishing.
