Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the "pumpkin" beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup, and fermented with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this bold and spicy beer is perfect on a cold autumn evening.

Bottle from 2012.

Medium amber in color and translucent with moderate lacing.

Aroma is a mix of candied yams, molasses, raisins, and vanilla.

Taste is those same candied yams, molasses, mild yeast, maple syrup, and mild allspice.

Mouthful is medium and soft. Carbonation is medium to low. Finish is sweet and warming.

Aging this beer was the bees knees. It developed a lot more body and depth. The yam and molasses are much more pronounced and the alcohol is in the picture. Much more reminiscient of a barley wine. Great stuff.

Pours Amber in color with a plentiful 2 finger head.

Aroma is pretty much dominated by the brown sugar and molasses. Definitely a Belgian yeast character.

Taste is like a malt forward Belgian saison. More molasses and brown sugar. Some bright citrus plays through. Some allspice, clove, and cinnamon.

Overall, this is a good pumpkin beer. I see it pairing well with thanksgiving dessert. It gets a 84.5/100.

Poured from bottle into Hill Farmstead wine glass, dark amber, mahogany color with head that fades. Smell is of a rich Belgian dark ale, the yams and fall seasonal spices, and maple syrup are all hard to detect. Delicious beer, but maple and yams are underwhelming. Wish there was more to it, as I opened this on Thanksgiving.

When you put them colors together that scream fall, this is the color. Aroma was all dark gourd and sugar. More fall stuff.

Taste, a nice spin on pumpkin beers, this one is yam/substantially. Covers some alcohol heat very well, would have guessed less than 10.5%. Not a malt bomb, even though a hop presence is not discernable. Some nutty presence to it. Viscosity was slightly sludgy for style, thought it was kinda cool even though it is far from my cup of tea.

Look is a brownish amber with a thin head that remains with the beer.

Aroma: Definitely a lot of spice and that slight sourness I've come to expect from a pumpkin type beer.

Taste is lots of spice and a thin belgiany quality like a spiced triple. Not really picking up anything distinctly yam. but a decent fall beer overall.

Nutmeg heavy on nose and tongue. The yams and maple are overpowered by the alcohol and the nutmeg. A little too much carbonation for this type of beer. It is a big powerful cold fall eve beer.

Rich and heavy, and despite its pleas to be not considered a pumpkin spice beer, it still more or less tastes like one - albiet, a very good one. The maple comes out a bit in the leafy, autumnal rich and grassy flavor of the leaves, and less in the candy sweetness of the syrup. But don't fret, the yams provide plenty of hearty sweet flavor. The spices are well done, and when I served it at a pre-Thanksgiving dinner, it was a perfect complement to the rest of the classic meal.

The texture is, as I said, quite thick and hearty, and the 9% abv certainly lets its presence be known, but there is more of a burn from the cardamom and nutmeg and yam (né pumpkin) flavor than from the booze. Rest assured, this will f--- you up if you drink it all, but with a beer this intensely flavorful and dense, and in such a big bottle, it's probably best shared with one or two others.

The boozy-ness over powers the tastes of the maple. The smell is faint. Light mouthfeel (good for a brown). Overall mediocre, doesn't feel true to the name.

A: Pours a very nice crimson. Slightly cloudy, with a finger or so of khaki head. Fairly rapid carbonation rising to form the head.

S: Smacks of pumpkin spice mixed with belgian yeast. Spicy intermingles with sweet. Like taking a whiff of the sweet potato pie and spice rack at the same time. Belgian yeast has the slight edge, with serious hits of phenolic fruit. But the spice underlies, with shots of nutmeg and clove. Not getting much in the way of yam, with the yeast notes fighting the other adjuncts.

T: Phenolic belgian yeast up front. Tons and tons of maple in the beginning give way to belgian qualities as it opens up. Maple is still a constant undertone. The brown ale components flex mid palate, revealing soft chocolate notes that quickly tighten up into notes of belgian spice with a slight hint of anise.

M: Medium bodied. Detectable heat going down the hatch.

This was poured into a tulip based on the Belgian-esque qualities assumed in this one.
The appearance was an almost dark brown color with copper hues along the sides. Arranging above, a one finger white to off white foamy head retains itself for a good minute before gently dissipating into a clingy semi-thick foamy lacing.
The aroma takes some sweet potatoes and brown sugar to roll right on into spicy Belgian yeast. Some cinnamon and nutmeg rounds out with maple syrup.
The taste involves all of the previously mentioned flavors to meld extremely nice. Light woodiness shows up to balance nicely.
The mouthfeel was fairly sticky through the syrupy portion. I'd say this was about medium bodied.
Overall, if the carbonation was a bit bumped up in this one, it might not be as sticky as I had sipped. However, it is a still a wonderful from The Bruery for Autumn.

This was a good tasting beer. It just didn't really get many of the flavors it boasts on the bottle to me. Dark brown color. Smells sweet and a slight alcohol aroma. Tasted sweet too, kinda get the maple syrup. Otherwise it just seemed to turn a brown ale into the taste of a golden ale to me. It was still pretty good beer, just not what you thought NYD.

Pours a surprisingly light brown from the bottle, but settles into a darker, copper-tinged brew in the glass. Translucent and slightly hazy, and topped by a large light cream colored head. Very good retention and nice lacing. The colors themselves certainly evoke Fall.

Big, sweet aroma, shot through with tons of spicy Belgian yeast. Cinnamon and nutmeg; maple syrup and cedar; sweet potatoes and brown sugar. Now it looks and smells like Fall in a glass.

Flavor follows: despite not being a pumpkin beer, it's quite similar to most pumpkin brews, as the same spices dominate the brew, followed by a slightly sour woody lacing, sweet and spicy Belgian yeast with a touch of must, and light brown sugar and caramel. It's more complex than most Fall brews, but similarly spicy and sweet.

Lively and sticky; moderately full bodied, surprisingly. Pretty drinkable, but sticky enough to make it a slow sipper.

This is a very different take on a Fall beer, yet simultaneously familiar. The Belgian yeast provides the biggest departure.

Another great offering from Bruery.....this is a perfect autumn beer, very well made managing to balance out the fall spices with the sweetness of the maple syrup....a great autumn beer.

On tap at Brasserie V in Madison, Wisconsin. 5oz served in a minisnifter.

I don't know what to say about this saison. It's a medium brown body, one finger white head that dies out quickly, no lacing. Smells of a ton of spices; a bit of cinnamon, yam, molasses, allspice, a hint of maple, Belgian yeast esters and a bit of minerals to it. Despite all the spices, this is smelling quite sweet. Flavour backs this up as well, sweet toffee, yam, molasses and a bit of maple rounds out the spices that are a bit less prevalent than on the nose. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit too sweet but well carbonated.

Pours a cloudy and dark amber with little to no head to speak of. Not a particularly pretty beer, but the taste is what matters.

Smell- Maple, cinnamon, and vanilla with some Belgian yeast.

Taste- Follows the nose in a very balanced way. Maple and cinnamon up front and vanilla towards the end with some warmth from the ABV. This is what I always have hoped for when I see a maple beer. I have been let down by some great breweries but this beer incorporates maple flawlessly.

Mouthfeel- Medium body with slight carbonation.

Overall- This beer is exactly what it markets itself to be, a delicious alternative to pumpkin beer. After several years of pumpkin beer, this is a welcomed alternative. Great beer for a cool fall night.

Murky, dark auburn in color. Wonderful aroma on this beer - I get caramel, molasses, vanilla, cinammon, maple syrup, and what I would've sworn was cardamom. Medium weight, and fairly carbonated. The taste pretty well follows the aroma, unfolding a medley of flavors that are hard to notate individually. Tons of cinammon, nutmeg, and various spice. I swear there's cardamom in this beer. Less prevalent is the maple syrup, which is kinda creeping along in the background. Not strong, but once I picked up on it, it made the beer for me.

In all honesty, I felt like this beer would be the result if you were to mix Sour in the Rye with 3 Floyds Alpha Kong. I dunno. Either way, great beer.

I enjoyed this beer on a cold autumn night in Colorado, from a vantage point where I could practically hear falling leaves scraping against the window as they listlessly fell onto a fading suburban lawn. It's a fine setting for this dark brew, and shortly after the pour I get a real sense of how appropos it is. THe aroma is packed with molasses, and seasoned with dark pepper and bay leaf. Overall, my impression is a scent that is both deep and sweetFascinating aroma. Lots of molasses and black pepper and all spice and even bay leaf. It's a smell worth of competing with a slow cooker running through a deep autumn afternoon. And now we move to the body, thick and deep in palate and flavor. Sweet potato tang and sweetness appear here, borrowing some spice from the nose for a pungent, but deep, dulcet and satisfying flavor. Dark molasses provides that body and sweetness, mixing together well with all the other flavors. But do take cautious: this is immensely boozy. Let it age a season or two, or if you just prefer strength to finesse.

Cloudy brown and a thin tan head with no retention. Sweet maple and spice with some yam aromas. Syrup and spice initially with Belgian yeast and candy. Light alcohol and dry, yeasty finish. Slick, smooth and low carbonation.

A little sweet but the Belgian elements balance it out. An interesting beer to perhaps age and mellow out the sweetness but I'm not sure it will improve that much.

Had to try a yam beer once I heard of it. Very similar to a pumpkin beer overall, so not too exciting there. Very bold flavors all around though. Yam, spice, and yeast all strong but well balanced. I wouldnt drink this all the time, but one on the first chilly autumn evening wouldnt be a bad way to kick off the season.

A seasonal creep that is yammy and semi-sweet. Light and entry-level craft beer style. Widely available. Brown with light brown head, not super thick but smooth. Ages well for up to a year.

750ml bottle, part of a welcome new swath of this brewery's offerings to make it up here once again to Alberta. It's cold and rainy outside right now, so what better thing to keep me the hell out of that, eh?

This beer pours a murky, dark orange-brick amber colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and mostly bubbly tan head, which leaves some approaching island profile lace around the glass as it gently recedes.

It smells of zesty gingerbread and sugary mashed yams, a battened-down Belgian yeastiness, some prominent dark orchard fruit as it warms, mixed savoury spices (ok, some nutmeg, clove, and star anise put their hands up the fastest), a subtle caramel malt sweetness, and some cozy, coddling alcohol esters. The taste is quite yammy (it's a word now) up front, that holiday side dish thing hard to dismiss, with a hearty attendant caramel/toffee malt, even more muddled seasonal spices, a gentile yeastiness, some bruised banana, overripe plum, and rotting pumpkin fruitiness, reduced brown sugar, very weak weedy and earthy hops, and a crazily respectful boozy warming.

The bubbles are pretty understated in their plain and barely supportive frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and mostly smooth, the various sugars fencing anything else out, it would seem. It finishes near-sweet, among the yam, dark sugar, malt, alcohol, and pasty spice essences.

Maybe it's just me, but this totally reminds me of being in Denver the past couple of years around this time, with the weather alternating between sunny and cold-ass rain, and the autumn (read: pumpkin) beer offerings very forceful and insistent in their flavourful attacks on my very being. Yeah, I'm gonna miss that this year, but thankfully this one, with its initially overly apologetic yam and dark sugary backbone, does the same trick, with style, and just a soupcon of aplomb.

Poured into snifter glass. The color is a a rosy-orange with a frothy tan head and lacing. It's a fairly unique color. The smell is also rather unusual with the yams and a lot of yeast and spice: cinnamon, cloves. There is also some lemon. In a weird way, it reminds me of cocktail sauce. The taste is spicy and the yam taste is unique. There is also some faint sweetness from the molasses. I didn't taste the maple syrup. This ale is nicely carbonated and although the ABV is 10% there wasn't a strong alcohol burn. That said, this is basically a sipper. Overall, this is a unique ale and I'm glad to have tried it. I'd like to try it on draught. It's a nice Fall ale.

750mL bottle. Pours a murky brownish orange with a 1/4 inch of head. The aroma is lots of the Belgian yeast. Cloves, coriander, nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon. The taste is more of that Belgian yeast upfront followed by lots of spices. Nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and coriander. Banana and some dark fruits. Not picking up on much yams or maple syrup. Yeasty finish. Medium bodied with a mild alcohol presence. I'm not a pumpkin fan so I appreciate the change on this one but I'm not digging it all that much. Overall, I won't be buying this again.

L- the look is possibly one of the best parts, a perfect deeper red with a hint of orange mixed in.

S-Belgian yeast,spciy,dark fruits

T-spicy esters from the yeast, dark fruits a slight banana from the yeast. nutmeg ,clove,cinnamon.

F-Nice carbonation the yams add a nice thick chewy feel. medium body.

O- overall a nice spiced seasonal ale that is a nice change from pumpkin. For the price and flavor it's always good for a once a year buy.
