Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the "pumpkin" beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup, and fermented with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this bold and spicy beer is perfect on a cold autumn evening.

Appearance: Autumn maple appears a medium brown in the glass, however a back light transforms the body into a beautiful deep ruby red with bright golden-amber edges. A rough pour results in a massive light tan coloured head, that displays great retention, but doesn't leave much in the way of lacing.

Smell: Wow, the nose is far more quady than I expected - there is about as much banana-ery Belgian yeast as anything else. Some holiday spicing (cinnamon and nutmeg) is present alongside a touch of sweet potato, some caramel and brown sugar. As the beer begins to warm the nose really opens up, with the Belgian yeast falling behind notes of brown sugar, molasses, toasted malt and an increased spiced character (ginger and all spice join in).

Taste: As with the nose, initially the flavour is very Belgian with a large spicy banana yeast quality. This however fades with warming to reveal fantastic sweet notes of molasses and brown sugar as well as a nice amount of spicing, toasted malt and a little sweet potato. There is only a hint of the 10% noted in the flavour, even at room temperature.

Mouthfeel: Initially, as with most beers, Autumn Maple is over carbonated for my tastes. However the carbonation is smooth enough that the high level isn't too bothersome and it settles down nicely. The body is where this beer shines in comparison to other holiday ales - it is just shy of full and lightly sticky.

Overall: Autumn Maple is an interesting take on the pumkin/holiday ale style. I think I would have preferred it without the Belgian yeast strain.

Poured out of a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass. 2012 vintage. I saved this last year with the hopes to have it with Thanksgiving food, but all of my plans fell through to the point where I said, "screw it," and opened it tonight with some cassoulet.

Pours a murky brown tinged amber with (alongside an aggressive pour) about two fingers of an off-khaki head. Maintains head retention quite well for a year old beer, but it eventually dies down over the course of an hour. Leaves minimal stickiness or lacing behind. Looks viscous and intensely sugary. Let's hope it's not a Bruery diabetes bomb.

As far as beers of this type go, this smells quite good - especially in light of my fears that this one of the unfortunate bottles that suffered a widespread infection in the 2012 batch. Instead of some off-flavors, I instead get a lot of the flavors advertised on the bottle, none which seem to have faded very much in the past year: big caramel, molasses, squash (the yams, I suppose), brown sugar, light maple, dates, plums, and a truffle-like biscuit character that is distinct. The alcohol is not necessarily hidden here (this is a beer from The Bruery after all) but it only provides minor sweetness underneath the diverse array of seasonal ingredients. I'm happy with how well the yams and maple have held up after a year. Quite good stuff at the front.

I'm really glad that I aged this for a year - if I remember well how this was fresh, this was far sweeter, vegetal, and syrupy when it was first bottled, but a year of aging has allowed a lot of those aspects to mellow out a bit. Brown sugar, caramel, nutmeg, allspice, pumpkin (or squash - but certainly not yam), spicy molasses, dates, raisins, prunes... Lots of seasonal, festive flavors packed into one beer. Reminds me of a cross between a pumpkin ale and spiced rum. Bready in character, but nothing too malty - the sweetness and spices are well balanced, and prevent this from becoming too cloying. The alcohol is extremely well hidden here at 20 proof. Carbonation has held up decently well with the bottle conditioning, but it does get a little syrupy in the long run. I easily drank two glasses of this in one evening, and I'm looking forward to cooking the rest with some lamb or duck.

I'm glad this ended up being enjoyable, in spite of my fears of how this would turn out aged. Can't say the same amount of praise for this when fresh, but I'm definitely interested in trying the barrel aged variant. Not my favorite release of all time during this season, but it's undeniably food friendly, and very good to use for cooking as well. A success overall from one of the most divisive breweries there is.

The beer pours a slightly vigorous and brownish head that dissipates very quickly and very little lacing is left behind. The beer itself is a clear brown that has a dark copper hue to it. However, seen in the right light, the beer also has bits of red. The beer has a strong maple smell with hints of hops complementing the maple and spices that make their appearance. In addition to the maple, the beer has hints of a banana smell that is probably the yeast and brown sugar, both of which complement the maple. The taste is fairly different from the smell. While the maple does play a central role among the various taste, the hops seem to come out more as an aftertaste. The spices are more distinct than smell. The various spices vary from cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. Overall, the beer has a sugary and nutty flavor with a heavier emphasis on spices than other brown ales. Notes of yam are also present. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with very little carbonation. The beer has a smooth feel but with some texture as it is drunk. Overall, the beer is pretty good and worth getting when available.

Thanksgiving beer 2013

Bottled in 2012

A- pours a clear, ruby brown color with a dark tan fizzy head that reduces quickly, leaving no lace behind

S- powdery yeast aromas up front with some banana, sweet molasses/brown sugar combines with the banana to give an aroma of banana nut bread, the yams add another sweet aspect and combine with some subtle spiciness, a hint of vanilla on the finish, very nice

T- sweet dark bread with some nutty flavors, cinnamon/nutmeg/allspice kicks in mid-palate and is complimented nicely by the sweetness of the molasses, Belgian yeast flavors provide fruity banana with some musty/earthiness to close it out

M- viscous body with low carbonation leads to a slightly syrupy mouthfeel with a chewy finish, lingering alcohol at the end

O- I really enjoyed this, it's definitely a sipper as the ABV is definitely noticeable. It pairs amazing well with thanksgiving food, especially pumpkin pie. A lot of other reviews stated that it was too boozy, I did not find this. Perhaps the year of aging mellowed it out a bit.
