Bottle to Westvletren 12 (small) chalice
Vintage 2011

Enjoyed as part of the "main event" at our Utrecht tasting (December 2011) as a result of Jeffo and doopiedoopiedoo's generosity. Thanks guys...can't wait to return the favor! Drank side-by-side with Black Damnation V - Double Black.

A: Deep brown, nearly opaque. 0.75 (soft mocha) fingernail head on vigorous pour.

S: Bourbon, Ghirardelli dark chocolate brownies, roasted dark malt, fig, vanilla, oak, and more booze (i.e. bourbon). It smells "hot", but this is masked well by some of the other notes coming off the nose.

T: In-your-face from the start with a very strong bourbon presence (too much for my liking though). Balance of dark fruits, chocolate, vanilla, and molasses, but seems to be a bit lop-sided for my liking. I'd like a bit more of the dark fruit to come thru, but all-in-all not too bad.

M: Full boded with medium carbonation.

O: This vintage needs a bit of age to mellow out as this beer is drinking a bit hot now. Robust and thick, but just not (entirely) well-rounded yet. Double Black was victorious in the head-to-head battle, but I look forward to trying this again in the future. A big, bold, and good offering from Patrick and Co. at The Bruery!

750ml brown bottle, shared by the Three-Rivers crew. 18,2% alc/vol therefore 2010 vintage. Nice brown colour with red hue, but where's the head ? The heavy alcohol transport all thso flavors of chocolate, cocoa, black chocolate, cherry blosom, blackstrap molasses, coconuts. This is one of my all-time ever favorite nose. This Imperial Stout tastes like molasses (it has the same viscosity !!) and some bourbon (it has the same alcohol content !!). I'm surprised how much I love this beer or is it all the alcohol that make my judgement off-road ?

Review #650

Absolute pitch black in appearance. The liquid poured super oily and was topped by a thin wisp of caramel colored froth. Within seconds, the head dissolved to a clingy ring.

The nose was outrageously rich and fragrant. Super sweet with strong brown sugar and molasses notes. Raisins, prunes and dates were definitely noticeable as well. Lots of deep, dark roasted malts. The bourbon character was definitely present but the booziness must have mellowed with time. What remained were intense notes of vanilla and toasted coconut. There was a definite port wine-like aspect as well.

The flavor profile was even more impressive than the aroma. Massive amounts of roasted and caramel malts appeared on the front end. Tons of brown sugar and sweet cream. As in the nose, bourbon was definitely noticeable but the booziness was amazingly well contained. This beer seriously drank like something in the 12-13% ABV range. Strong molasses and port notes. Some French roast coffee and bakers chocolate. Vanilla and toasted coconut notes played a major role in the taste as well. The finish was sweet and mellow, yet not cloying in the least bit.

Black Tuesday was undoubtedly the most thick and viscous monster of a beer I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. The motor oil-like liquid contained a fine, mild effervesce which lent the beer a surprisingly supple creaminess. Simply amazing.

This 2009 vintage bottle of Black Tuesday was hands down the best stout of any type I have ever tried, and perhaps my favorite beer overall. Despite the ridiculously high ABV (19.5%), the alcohol was so well melded into the flavor profile. I wound up splitting my bottle four ways but felt like I could have put down at least half of it myself (although I might not be standing afterward).

Bottles of these beasts sell for over $300 on eBay and now I understand why.

A: Near black with no head and minimal, thin lacing--but pretty understandable considering the booze in this thing

S: Lots of bourbon, oak, booze, dark fruits, roasted malts; this smells so hot--so boozy and sweet and yet incredible

T: Wow, that is boozy--so much bourbon and oak and dark fruits but man does it all mingle so well together; this beer will probably age really well but it is so damn good fresh

F: Viscous, thick, syrupy, awesome mouth feel

O: This is an amazing beer--it is so boozy but some dark fruits and roasty malts do linger making this a world class beer: one of my favorites
