2013 bottle- sadly infected as expected.

Pours a beautiful mahogany with ruby clarity. Sitting atop is a finger of khaki head that fades quick leaving patchy lace.

Smell has some tang to it along with raw oak, earth and cinnamon. Fruity almost like cranberry. As it warms up, it smells kinda shitty with vegetal matter mixing with dirty diapers.

Taste is tart right upfront almost lemony with raw oak tannins feeling like im drinking a strong sour tea. Cinnamon bark in the finish then vegetal matter.

Light body and modestly carbonated. A trainwreck of a beer.

L' Infected

Another party pooper but everyone was sort-of expecting it. Looks good on paper but it ended up just being sour all over. The bottles when they were fresh were supposed to be really nice but so far, it seems, all the held on to bottles went bad.

Split with rudzud and a bunch of people at a cellar cleaning party.

Decent creamy smaller head, hazy dark murky brownish red color.

Nose vegetable, ketchup, some sweet candy malts and brown sugar, touches of barrel and vanilla like, but not great.

Taste sweet candy, toffee and caramel, syrupy, little barrel notes, touch vanilla barrel, with lots of candy malts, bit of warming booze, etc.

Mouth is heavy, syrupy, decent but lighter carb, some warming booze.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

A: Pours a hazy reddish copper, moderate visible carbonation and a thin off-white head.

S: This smells like a glass of vinegar before I even get it all the way to my nose. Not good.

T: Yup…that confirms it. A glass of acetic vinegary awfulness.

O: This was a drain pour. As was the second bottle I opened. This review was quite delayed in posting - I opened the bottle as soon as I was back in town after the Bruery sent the email about concerns with this particular batch. It had been refrigerated since I received it.

Still, I will update this review after they (hopefully) get the issues sorted out for next years batch.

750mL bottle acquired through the Reserve Society. Bottled 9/20/13. Served in my shiny new Phish snifter (my wife the the absolute best!).

Pours opaque chestnut muddy brown with a full frothy finger of cream colored head.

Smells straight up sour. Barrel funk, lime and vinegar.

At least some of the base beer comes through in the taste but this is infected. Overbearingly sour lemon and vinegar. Way back behind a curtain of sour I get a little spice, bourbon and sweet potato- so there's at least trace evidence that this was supposed to be sometimg other than a soured mess. Bad.

Medium light body with decent carbonation. Lemon and a tiny hint of sweet potato soufflé in the finish.

Perhaps I shouldn't review a beer that I'm pretty sure is infected but I have no moral qualms over this negatively affecting the score. I pay way too much on the bottles, let alone shipping them accross the country to put up with this. So avoid this, at least the 2013 batch. Not worth buying, trading or shipping even if you think you're curious.

A: Pours amurky brown with fall colored highlights and hues, with a frothy tan head that fades slowly, great retention, providing great lacing

S: Yammy, warm, bourbon, spicey and hella good. Very inviting nose..

T: A healthy dose of bourbon initially then the base beer flavors just rush in. Loads of yams, spices, sweet potatoes, light pumpkin and some maple. Like Fall in a glass.A nice sweetness, bourbon and hint of vanilla midtaste which sordove transitions to a carbonated, somewhat dry, yet warm and sticky sweet finish

M: Medium-full body, well carbonated, evidence by feel, weight and appearance. A nice, warming and flavorful beer coats the palate

O: Hot damn. I enjoyed the shit out of this beer!

So glad I waited until thanksgiving for this beer. Tough to know style based on other reviews. I see it as almost a BA wee heavy. Pours a deep red with a thin layer of brown head. Smells of bourbon barrels, sweet candy, slight earthiness. A boozy version of our family sweet potato with sugar and pecan on top. Taste is a nice bourbon booziness upfront with candied sweet potato and cinnammon.. Sticky as it warms to room temp

Bourbon barrels to Autumn Maple. The regular version is awesome on its own, so what could adding liquor to the mix do to the beer? On-tap at the source itself, on to the beer:

Colored almost like autumn itself. Brown with orange hues and an accent of red. A short lived head on top, which drops to a lace around the glass. The aroma brings some aspects of Autumn Maple, yams and spices being prevalent, and the added characteristics of the bourbon barrel, booze and syrup. I could probably add this to my waffles for a change.

With so much of the barrel aged character in play of the beer's taste, it tastes like I have a small glass of yam liquor in front of me. There are traces of cinnamon and allspice to lift the experience. We have a big portion of sherry, as well of alcohol which acts as a two way street; it dampens some of the sweetness, but also perhaps being spoiled by The Bruery's ability to mask high alcohol beers, I get a good dose of strong alcohol. Still, it remains a very good beer. It's a full bodied beer with a smooth texture, but with a boozy character.

Autumn Maple with a twist. Sometimes you need a twist from ordinary, and the barrel aged version accomplishes that while maintaining greatness.

From 11/26/13 notes. Bought 1 of these in the RS this year. Bottled 09/20/13, poured from a 750ml bottle into my Bruery tulip.

a - Pours a murky, reddish brown color with two inches of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, dark fruits, bourbon, pumpkin, oak, alcohol, toasted malts, and light caramel. As it warms more sweet bourbon comes out and it gets better. Pretty nice.

t - Tastes of bourbon, pumpkin, sweet dark fruits, cinnamon, cloves , vanilla, oak, toasted malts, and toffee and caramel malts. Very nice taste; more bourbon and pumpkin (I know it's yams but tastes like pumpkin to me), and nice vanilla and caramel too. Step up from the nose for me.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth and almost no alcohol heat which is awesome.

o - Overall a pretty good "pumpkin" style beer, and miles ahead of the normal Autumn Maple base beer, which I'm not the biggest fan of. A beer that gets much better as it warms up, with some nice sweet bourbon and very easy to drink for 13% ABV. I only grabbed one this year in case I didn't like it and wished I had grabbed 2; next year I'd buy 2 of them.

Bourbon is huge in this and it is heavy, heavy HEAVY. Very sweet, very syrupy, very boozey. Hard for me to work through even a small pour. Tons of flavor and a rich smell full of dark fruit, bourbon, maple, malt, vanilla and brown sugar. Just too sweet and syrupy for me.

2011 vintage, aged in my cellar.

After an aggressive pour into a Bruery tulip glass, the opaque walnut brown body is topped by a half inch tan head that stays a bit, then dissipates to a ring with some lacing. Looks good to drink.

Nose is yams and sweet maple syrup, vanilla, and autumnal spices including cinnamon and clove. The barrel aging improves the smell, muting the yams and bringing the spice to a reasonable level over the base beer.

Tastes great, the bourbon and wood aging really smooths the base beer out as well as the extra time in the bottle. Lots of bourbon flavor and maple syrup up front, then the yam flavor comes through and just enough vanilla and spice. Finish is spicy, more like a nice spice cake. The flavors are diverse, but very well integrated. The maple syrup sweetness does build up, but it is never cloying. This tastes so much better than the base Autumn Maple. The couple years in the bottle have smoothed this beer out, and there is not all that much oxidation present. Could go years longer.

For all the flavor and sweetness, the medium body is lighter than anticipated. There is enough carbonation that this is just over the line from being flat.

This is a beer that really lives up to its name. The yam flavor complements the maple and spice, and the Bourbon barrel aging elevates this to a completely higher level over the base beer. This is a fine beer, drinkable (in small quantities with the 13%) on its own, but better with friends and food.

Sampled March 2012
A steady pour into my Lost Abbey Teku glass produces an almost two-finger thick, pale brown, or amber tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated amber / brown color that shows an almost brilliantly clear, bright cranberry-juice red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of caramelized / toasted malt, cooked brown sugar, toasted coconut, tart / warm Bourbon notes, and some spicy, almost green woody aromatics. There is an earthy quality to this beer that seems contributed from the toasted malt, the toasted oak, the hint of spices and perhaps even from the yams. The spices are very subtle, much more so than in the base beer or the Brett version, but do get noticed deep in the finish; they contribute aromatic notes of nutmeg, some woody ginger notes, and perhaps something a bit like allspice.

The beer has a sweetness to it up front, but this is well balanced by a Bourbon / barrel influenced tartness, lots of tannic, woody oak, a solid, general spiciness and even some carbonic bite. There is a woodiness in the finish that seems contributed by the Maple Syrup, as well as the oak barrel; it has a spiciness to it, and almost a touch of wintergreen character to it (though this last is quite subtle and merely a suggestion). There is nice toasted character to this beer that seems mostly malt contributed, but is also influenced by the oak, and it provides a touch of a bite that is a paler version of the bite that something more roasted would have. There isn’t a whole lot of sweetness to this beer and this makes the toasted coconut notes a touch softer, and there is also a noticeable vanillin note, but they still play a prominent role in this beer. The body is pretty light for a beer of this strength, having said that though, this is certainly a sipping beer; not just from the warming alcohol, as this does have some sticky, viscous character to it. There is a spiciness in the finish, that is almost more woody than spicy, but I am sure is contributed by actual spices (perhaps nutmeg and allspice). As the beer warms up a nice nuttiness starts to come out that seems to suggest a slight oxidation picked up during its barrel rest.

Not bad, I do like that the Bourbon character plays a supporting role here; it does play a big role, but the base beer clearly comes through and doesn’t get drowned out by the barrel treatment. Having said that, I definitely enjoyed the Brett version more, though I haven’t had the regular version since that flat, first release, but suspect that I would like a properly carbonated version of that beer more than this version as well. Still, this is easily an enjoyable beer and is nice to sip away an evening with.

had this one for a while...thanks to CAbeerCAbeerCA for the hookup. enjoyed from a bruery snifter.

a - brew poured a fairly muddy looking brown that settled into the glass a maroon purple with a finger of foamy fizzy head that was gone quick leaving some spotty head islands on the surface and a ring around the glass.

s - really nice yam, sweet potato autumn spicing with a huge glazing of caramel toffee over the top. nice bourbon vanilla-y vibe.

t - booze soaked yam. caramel, vanilla. grape in the background.

m - the abv is really well masked on this. doesn't feel big at all.

o - overall, better than i had expected. the barrel really adds a nice element to this beer. i don't want to say rumpkin since rumpkin is in a league of its own, but that beer is reminiscent of how wonderful the barrel helps for a vegetable beer like this. really tasty.

Served from bottle into a Bruery tulip. Poured brown with a half finger off-white head. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, wood, and subtle sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, yams, sweet alcohol, vanilla, maple syrup, oak, and subtle spices. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. After seeing some reviews on this one, I had a pretty good idea on what I was getting into. However, what I found was quite a bit more than I would have anticipated. The aroma was extremely nice on this one. Almost too awesome as it took me quite awhile to get to the first sip. On the first sip I am slammed in the face with yams. On the followthrough I have the nice lingering vanilla that refreshes the palate and invites you back for a night cap. A really well done brew that I'm definitely glad I had a full 750 mL for myself to enjoy, even though the volume along with ABV might make me regret that decision.

A: poured a murky burnt orangish brown in color with a nice half finger of head that left some good frothy lacing sticking to the glass.

S: lots of spice such as nutmeg and cinnamon but with plenty of yams pumpkin, and toasted sweet potatoes. the bourbon barrel qualities were present with a good amount of booze heat and some good maple syrup sweetness.

T: bourbon barrel character was more pronounced on the palate but added some good accents alongside the signature yams, pumpkin, and sweet potato flavor, with plenty of nutmeg cinnamon spice, a touch of vanilla, maple syrup and mild underlying booze that was well balanced.

M: the brew was medium in body with a moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet, spice, mild boozy, bourbon barrely, yammy, and rich finish.

O: very well done variation of the autumn maple beer with great bourbon qualities and well balanced booze heat.

Pours a hazy brown with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. Small dots of lace form slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, yams, spices, bourbon, and wood. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a woody finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is a tasty barrel aged version of the original beer.

Pours a muddy, dark mahogany-brown with a dense ring of ivory and a steady stream of bubbles rising along the edges. Amazing nose of sweet caramel, maple-glazed sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, pecan, and intense Bourbon. So nice, I wish Yankee Candle made aromas like this. Taste is more roasted sweet potato, dark maple syrup, cinnamon, and delicious, delicious Bourbon. Sweet, decadent, and amazingly drinkable despite the 13% ABV. Mouthfeel is smooth and a bit syrupy, with a medium-full body and good carbonation. Overall a wonderful treat, hopefully I can get more in the future.

Pours a beige head. Color is a murky caramel brown.

Aroma: Bruery bourbon barrel flavors. Oak and vanilla mixed with autumn maple flavors. Not as much spices show as compared to the regular version, however.

Taste: Bourbon, but it kind of reminds me of rye. Oak, and vanilla, with a lot of spice flavors, but not as much as the regular version. The barrels add a nice layer here and take away from the things I don't like in this beer.

Mouthfeel: Warm and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry.

Overall, this was much better than the other versions. Beats the brett version and the regular by miles. Gotta love the bruery barrels.

A - Pours a murky amber-brown, with a decent couple of fingers of head. Adequate lacing and retention.

S - Plenty of yam and pumpkin, some brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon (although that last one might be more from the rim). Pretty nice.

T - Rich flavors of allspice, pumpkin/yam and sweet potato, maybe a little caramel, and again nutmeg and cinnamon. Certainly rich and sweet, but without being cloying. Tried both with and without the rimmed glass.

M - Carbonation is light; maybe a bit on the undercarbed side. Otherwise it's pretty full. It's a little like liquefied pumpkin pie.

O - Definitely a nice beer, although not something I could drink all the time -- or even more than one in a night. Glad to have had the opportunity to try it.

Served in a Bruery tulip because I'm not an animal and I know how to drink a beer properly. At the time of this review, this is #10 on the "Top Beer - Fruit / Vegetable Beer" list on beeradvocate.com. At one time this was the #1 beer on this list, I had this bottle for a while and was slow to open it based on recent reviews and ABV, I split the bottle with Lunch though and we had a fine time drinking it.

Beer is amber / brown / orange and completely hazy, nice off white tan head of small bubbles, low retention, a little lacing, moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is strong, sweet, syrup, bourbon, a mild spice.

Beer is medium to light in body and a little spice, lots of bourbon but it is definitely not the "watered down bourbon" descriptors friends have given me. It is pretty sweet and strong. Nice finish a little dry, it is a big beer and it would be hard for me to drink more than a pint of it but I might have it again in a smaller portion in the future.

Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to Callmecoon for this. 2011 vintage I believe.

3.0 A: Deep plum black color. Two fingers of fizzy beige head. Head fizzes away like a soda would. No lacing.

4.0 S: Interesting. The bourbon in this smells more like rum. Perhaps it's the spices mixed with the bourbon booze that give this impression. In any case, this has a huge maple syrup presence, even more than CBS. Yams and toastiness next. Loads of spices, but they don't stand out too well individually. Rather, they meld to form one generic pumpkin spice blend. The bourbon adds a leathery earthiness and booziness. This smells good, but I think I like the non-barrel aged version better.

3.5 T: Very surprised here. This seems to be a lot less sweet that the normal version. Usually this would make me quite happy when dealing with Bruery beers, but I loved AM just the way it is. Anyway, the bourbon comes off like a rum again from the spice blend. Lots of yams in the taste. Toastiness and some nuttiness. Maple is less apparent in the taste. Again, tasty, but not nearly as good as the regular.

3.5 M: Heavier medium to ligher heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy. Some amylase coagulation going on in the back of my tongue.

3.5 D: Tasty, but I expected the bourbon to add a nice touch to the base. Instead, it seems that it weakened it.

Trying a 2011 and 2009 vintage side-by-side.

2011--pours a surprisingly dark brown with two fingers khaki head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.
2009--pours a dark mahogany with less than a finger of beige head that recedes into a thin ring with no lacing.

2011--lots of sweet potatoes, maple, and vanilla on the nose at first with notes of caramel and pumpkin spice. Oak and bourbon bring up the finish.
2009--loads of yams, vanilla, and caramel with pumpkin spices playing a minor role. There are some faint oak and bourbon notes.

2011--lots of sweet yam, vanilla, and pumpkin spice notes at first with caramel and toffee also there. Oak flavors and bourbon bring up the finish with a light alcohol burn.
2009--vanilla, caramel, and yams dominate with light spice notes. Bourbon and toffee with some oak notes bring up the finish with a slight alcohol presence.

2011--medium body with lowish carbonation, this beer is surprisingly light for such a high abv beer. It's almost watery.
2009--medium body with low carbonation, this beer is sticky thick, though is also slightly watery.

2011-- a very good beer overall. Very complex and tasty without being overly sweet and boozy.
2009--this one is also good, though the bourbon presence is subdued and it's slightly sweeter. It's still tasty, though.

Ultimately, I think the 2011 is a bit better. They're both good, but the fresher bottle is a bit more complex. I think one year might be the sweet spot for this beer.

Pours a dark tawny brown color with a decent sized tightly bubbled off white head with moderate retention and minimal lace. I can smell the barrel treatment as soon as I pop the cap off. Spicy, herbal, and peppery aromas are mixed with sweet dark sugars, vanilla, bourbon and oak. The flavor is definitely different. Sweet sugary malts up front are attacked by peppery herbal earthy flavors and just before it gets too weird the bourbon sweeps in with a bit of woodiness to cleanse things a bit. Long lingering sweet herbal bourbon flavor in the finish. Medium to thick body with a sweet almost sugary mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. Well this one certainly is different, but it really did grow on me after a pint. I don't think I've ever had the non barrel version, but it seems like without the barrel this would be a sweet and herbal mess. As is I kind of liked it, but not sure I would seek it out again.

2011 version bottle poured into a sniffer.

A: pours a dark muddy brown, with a khaki finger and a half of head that fades slowly leaving a nice film on the top and some head around the edge of the glass.

S: Big nose of the usual Autumn Maple smells, but with a very sweet bourbon accomplice. Smells almost like if you crossed the aroma of sweet potatoes and a pecan pie, and a glass a bourbon were all on the table near each other.

T: Initially there is a nice burst of bourbon, then it fades into autumn maple. if you havent had autumn maple read those reviews to understand what I am trying to say.

M: Mellow carbonation, very smooth, but it is hot at the end.

O: Very impressed with this one, wonder how a little age can help this out. Hard to think it could get better, unless they let it sit in bourbon longer.

Beer pours a murky brown with a very small off white lacing head, appears to be on the lower end of the carbonation spectrum, not much going on bubble wise but very appealing. The smell is very bold with bourbon, vanilla, oak, yams, brown sugar and raisin. The taste pretty much matches the nose, can't believe how much of a different beer this is compared to regular Autumn Maple. The mouthfeel is fairly creamy in body, more carbonation then I expected for the appearance. A great beer that really highlights the good from barrel aging.
