A: chocolate-brown, thin sudsy head, healthy lace.

S: spiced and roasted nuts, it smells exactly like fruitcake, raisins molasses, allspice.

T: all the flavors from the nose, walnuts and raisins are really pronounced, also figs, dates, plums. Finish is boozy, lots of bourbon and oak.

M: light- to medium-bodied, burning alcohol finish, virtually interchangeable with a sip of whisky.

O: tastes more like Christmas pudding than Christmas pudding does, pudding coated in brandy/bourbon. Really delicious, I'd just as soon eat it.

Graciously shared by and with Dyan last night. Was expecting this beer to be pretty good, but was in fact amazed by the quality and innovation this beer showed.

AM pours a fairly dark brown color with OK head retention and light, sticky lacing. The beer doesn't look all that impressive, but then I stuck my nose in the glass. Good lord! Houston, I believe we have achieved lift off. The nose in this beer is incredible, and included an aroma profile of vanilla, sweet potato/yams, pumpkin pie, cinnamon and nutmeg. The sweet, spice laden aroma profile is just stunning in this beer. On the palate, this beer is every bit as impressive, as I now got chocolate, brandy, more pumpkin pie, cinnamon and vanilla.... all on a fairly sweet frame. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, with a long, rich, sweet finish. Drinkability is terrific in this beer, especially considering the sweetness, abv. and boatload of spice. While you wouldn't go gulping it down, it was no trouble at all drinking down my 10 ounce glass.

This beer pushes the boundaries and is an absolute tour de force by Bruery. As Dyan noted in his review, this beer blows the regular AM completely out of the water. Very, very impressive.

Bottle shared by mymrnngjckt at a recent tasting. Tasted side by side with the regular Autumn Maple.

Pour was dark brown with a decent head, good retention.

Smelled of sweet, candied yams with a ton of maple and vanilla. The bourbon was here but the vanilla was the dominant element from the barrel. Sweet with a bit of spice but very pleasant.

As nice as the nose was...wow. This was absolutely tasty as hell. No other way to say it. Sweet but not cloying, with lots of caramel, sweet potatoes, brown sugar. Sweet bourbon and vanilla as well. Some pie spices. Amazingly smooth and incredibly tasty.

Mouthfeel was a very smooth, creamy medium-full body. No bothersome alcohol heat. As sweet as this beer was it was not cloying at all.

Wow, this beer was exceptionally good. So flavorful and the bourbon just took the base beer to another level. I could drink an entire bottle of this myself. Delicous stuff.

A: Pours amurky brown with fall colored highlights and hues, with a frothy tan head that fades slowly, great retention, providing great lacing

S: Yammy, warm, bourbon, spicey and hella good. Very inviting nose..

T: A healthy dose of bourbon initially then the base beer flavors just rush in. Loads of yams, spices, sweet potatoes, light pumpkin and some maple. Like Fall in a glass.A nice sweetness, bourbon and hint of vanilla midtaste which sordove transitions to a carbonated, somewhat dry, yet warm and sticky sweet finish

M: Medium-full body, well carbonated, evidence by feel, weight and appearance. A nice, warming and flavorful beer coats the palate

O: Hot damn. I enjoyed the shit out of this beer!

On cask at The Bruery. Served still, barrel sample style.

Pours a complicated dark brown... amber towards the rim of the glass, but a deep maroon color in the bottom. Despite being served still, a long lasting tan head crowns it beautifully. The nose is ripe with yams and rich spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, all topped off with toasted marshmallows. No booziness despite sitting in barrels eleven months.

Tasting the 100% Barrel Aged Autumn Maple was an experience I savored for an extended period of time. The best way I can explain this beer is that it takes everything good and desirable in the Autumn Maple and amplifies it to the next level, meanwhile any of the harsh elements all got smoothed out inside those barrels. While barrels often transform a beer, in this instance it tasted like a natural evolution. Instead of tasting bourbon, whiskey, or oak I tasted the original elements of the beer, just simply made better. The roasted yam flavor became more genuine and rich. The flavor of nutmeg reminded me of roasted nuts. Toasted marshmallow sweetness and spicy cinnamon all smoothed out the experience, undoubtedly aided by the additions of bourbon and rye whiskey barrels.

The mouthfeel is somewhat dense and creamy, but not slippery. This was described as still, though there may have been the sightest hint of carbonation, or that may have just been the bitterness giving me a tingle. Some have complained about this, and I admit I had to sip this one very slowly to appreciate it, but appreciate it I did. For the record, the bottled version is fully carbonated, I tasted it, but I actually think I preferred this one still. A delicious beer that I thoroughly enjoyed.

There is not a better pumpkin (or yam, or spiced) beer out there, and so obviously my scoring reflects this.

750 ml bottle purchased from The Bruery Tasting Room

Appearance - Just like the standard seasonal coordinate, a polished brown hue emerged from the bottle resulting in an entreating outlook. To my understanding (and please pardon me if I am erroneous here) this beer was an apportionment of the first Autumn Maple batch with an inclusion of forced carbonation. If so, the pour was a great indication of that with an instant, notable amelioration on the CO2!

Smell - Mother's Kitchen on Thanksgiving again, but with barrel shavings to augment the prevalent yet abstruse spices. The indications of brown sugar prevail, while a delicate grace of cinnamon is nearly subliminal to the nose. Phenol notes of clove felicitously emanate in the midst of oak scents to again familiarize the advocate with the counterpart from which it derived.

Taste - A sugared oak blitzkrieg of autumn spices pursue the susceptible palate and begin to dematerialize after a hospitable transfer of alcohol eradicates the spiciness. I find the alcohol to be a propitious element that enriches a sense of evenness to the aforementioned spices & oak.

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel became emaciated fairly soon after the brew had settled. I am accustomed to a substantial feel in the mouth while partaking in such a big beer, but that in no way negates the merit of my new favorite autumn seasonal!

Drinkability - The barrel-aging has done wonders to an already existing brew of paramount qualities. The aging alone ups the drinkability a whole point, compared to the regular Autumn Maple. The sole contributing factor was the barrel, which procreated the ability to enjoy a whole bottle on my own.

It is rather marvelous how barrel-aging seems to aggrandize just about any style of beer, as is most certainly the case with Barrel Aged Autumn Maple. I am to the point where anything matured in barrels has become the prototype for a superior ranking ale. The Bruery has yet again left me enduringly spoiled with barrel aged ales that continue to bombard my proneness towards them.

I have never had the base beer, nor have I had a yam or sweet potato beer before.

A - It pours a translucent mahogany, like sweet-tea with a little off-white soapy froth.

S - Somewhat surprisingly, this is right up my alley, this brew is in my wheel-house, etc. Being quite the fan of pumpkin brew, the similarities here are uncanny; it seems that yam is an exceptionally similar addition. But in this case, it smells like a barrel-aged pumpkin beer. Big gourd notes are saturated with spicy-boozy and earthy barrel aromas. The nose is one of the sweetest I've ever enjoyed, largely due to the richness and complexity of the spicing. It is all interrelated; woody notes impart vanilla, which couples perfectly with the sweetness, which then tempers the booze, which in turn enhances the spice, which meld with the notes of maple, suggesting woodiness, and it all comes full-circle.

T - The taste is just exactly like the aroma transposed, however, what is tantalizing in the nose is in fact overwhelming in flavor. It has a very big maltiness that is richly sweet like EBW, casting impressions of date paste, palm sugar and the caramel that binds pecan pie. The pumpkin flavor is big, the barrel flavor almost as big, and lots of maple, pecan, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and general mulled spice round it out. I like the whole thing with a regard neighboring the utmost, but the fact is plain that the brew is an outrageously sweet confection. I am reminded of Southern Comfort, Mountain Dew, Petits Fours; not because it tastes like any of the aforementioned, but because: 1) they are all things that I love the taste of. 2.) they can also cause instant diabetes.

M - It is pleasantly thinner than I might've expected. I say that because this brew would likely suffer from a heavy-bodied, syrupy feel. There is a low carbonated velvety slickness, and it works very well to enhance the brew.

D - Despite the huge sweetness and intensely desert-like flavor, the brew is so good that I could probably crush a bottle to myself (were it actually available to do so...)

Note: I eat various yams and sweet potato (there is a difference between the two) and so I am quite familiar with those flavors. This beer tastes distinctly like pumpkin, and not like yam or sweet potato.

At the outset, this beer beats the living crap out of the regular Autumn Maple with a pneumatic nail gun on turbo. Many thanks to waltonc to sending me this beauty, and to John for facilitating it.

Clear deep mahogany red with a thin beige head that hangs around for a big before receding to a wispy ring leaving a beautiful amount of lace, this is a gorgeous beer.
The nose opens spicy with cinnamon, nutmeg and some mace to go with a HUGE vanilla character, this is rather eggnog like. The sweet potato (in this case, yam) character is noticeable, as is some booze. Really, this is like cinnamon vanilla sugar withe a moderate bourbon character. This beer has really spent its time in the barrel very well. With some milk chocolate, this beer is just off the wall. With some mellow caramel, this is something I look forward to revisiting. Brown sugar and maple syrup are noticeable as well.

The palate is beautifully integrated with vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, mace and a moderate yam character. This is darned rich and complex. While the sweetness i present, it is moderate with the brown ale base coming through, with flavors of brown sugar and maple syrup . The time in the barrel has allowed the spices to mellow out and the Belgian yeast character to come through, making this beer truly unique. Drying on the finish with a mild spiciness and moderate vanilla, this is pretty excellent. Alcohol is noticeable on the finish, as it is on the nose. Medium in body and low in carbonation, this beer is pretty special. My only criticism would be the mild astringency on the finish.

I got a couple of bottle of the 2011 release. The nose isn't as vanilla-like as the first batch, and not as explosive and off the wall. Spicy up front, with moderate bourbon, some vanilla, and moderate oak. The palate is spicier, with more oak, brown sugar, yam, and booze. Fairly light, with ample carbonation and moderate tannin on the finish. Pretty solid, I'm enjoying this and wouldn't turn this down. 4/4.5//4/3.5/4

2011 vintage, aged in my cellar.

After an aggressive pour into a Bruery tulip glass, the opaque walnut brown body is topped by a half inch tan head that stays a bit, then dissipates to a ring with some lacing. Looks good to drink.

Nose is yams and sweet maple syrup, vanilla, and autumnal spices including cinnamon and clove. The barrel aging improves the smell, muting the yams and bringing the spice to a reasonable level over the base beer.

Tastes great, the bourbon and wood aging really smooths the base beer out as well as the extra time in the bottle. Lots of bourbon flavor and maple syrup up front, then the yam flavor comes through and just enough vanilla and spice. Finish is spicy, more like a nice spice cake. The flavors are diverse, but very well integrated. The maple syrup sweetness does build up, but it is never cloying. This tastes so much better than the base Autumn Maple. The couple years in the bottle have smoothed this beer out, and there is not all that much oxidation present. Could go years longer.

For all the flavor and sweetness, the medium body is lighter than anticipated. There is enough carbonation that this is just over the line from being flat.

This is a beer that really lives up to its name. The yam flavor complements the maple and spice, and the Bourbon barrel aging elevates this to a completely higher level over the base beer. This is a fine beer, drinkable (in small quantities with the 13%) on its own, but better with friends and food.

Consumed on 9/4/2009 at The Bruery tasting room. This is a blend of Rye and Bourbon barreled Autumn Maple. Poured into a snifter, the beer is dark brown with traces of crimson and a suprisingly large creamy beige head. Retention is good and scattered lacing is left behind.

The nose is really fantasic. Bourbon is immediately evident as well as spicy rye. Maple and vanilla are apparent, and yams are subdued compared to the non-bal aged version. Molasses is pervasive and the bourbon remains strong throughout. Some spices (nutmeg and a little cinnamon) and alcohol are evident. A little booze is noticeable.The barrel aging has taken this beer to another level.

The flavor opens up boozy and sweet with plenty of maple. The bourbon is pervasive (again) and the rye is noticeable to a lesser extent. A nice level of boozy heat is evident. The spices are strong but not as stong as the regular version. The molasses and maple are quite nice. The finish is bourbon, sweet, and spicy.

The cask provides low carbonation but it's quite enjoyable. This beer really took to the barrels. Highly recommended. The ultimate fall beer.

Bottle from HopHead84. Thanks, Shane. You're like some kind of alcoholic Santa Claus, randomly delivering delicious new beers to the drunken masses.

Pours a clear but dark amber, appropriately autumnal, with a small white head that settles to a disc around the glass.

The nose has a massive yam presence, sweet and caramelized, baked with brown sugar and drizzled with maple syrup. Whiskey barrel notes of vanilla, spicy oak, and warming alcohol enhance the already rich base beer. There's a spicy component as well, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. This smells decadent.

The taste lives up to the nose, sweet yams marrying maple syrup and brown sugar, and backed by a huge boozy barrel presence. Spiciness comes through mid-palate, cinnamon and nutmeg most prominently. While this is fairly hot, the solventy element works beautifully thanks to the sheer richness of the base beer. Full bodied with moderate carbonation, a touch syrupy but surprisingly drinkable. While this is sweet from start to end, the finish reveals some mild woody tannins that add a balancing element.

Had this at Beechwood BBQ poured into a similar snifter to the Bruery's own.

A pours a light brown almost the color of brown sugar or maple syrup. Very little soft head with a light brown color to it as well.

S lots of maple syrup, some ginger and other almost pumpkin pie smells with a nice bourbon vanilla overtone to all of it. Smells very rich and complex.

T great taste lots of vanilla bourbon flavors start the taste in your mouth with some of the yam's squash pumpkin type flavors in the middle, this is where the spices come in with notes of all spice ginger and nutmeg, finishes back with the bourbony richness and a smooth round flavor that lingers on your palate.

M very smooth and easy to drink. The alcohol is incredibly well integrated for a 10% beer. I didn't even notice it was 10% until hopping on BA to write my review.

I would definitely seek this one out again as it was absolutely delicious. I would love to try it paired with an actual pumpkin pie or some amazing ice cream. a great slow slipper.

App- Deep dense brown with crimson/amber edges. A two finger, crème colored head with a medium receding rate showed and fizzled away with loud production. Falls to a healthy pond layer of bubbles with a very good amount of lace/cling

Smell- Very good aromatics on this beer. Large amounts of bourbon sting with a softer vanilla. The spices of nutmeg and cinnamon come in next. Round out with a whispy booze and some candied brown sugar.

Taste- This is much more inline with the taste of the base beer just kicked up a notch. More smooth from the barrel and a layer of added richness and fullness. The bourbon of course comes first with vanilla layering underneath to cut the sting. The spices are a bit more prevalent in this version and the 13% is there and you know it but not too too overpowering.

Mouth- Medium to full bodied with a medium to low carbonation level. Residual vanilla bourbon notes.

Drink- I wasn't surprised I like this one the best. Barrel treatments bring out vanilla and I love me some vanilla. This was really a great beer. Balanced, layered, flavorful but not overpowering. I would love another bottle or on cask.

So glad I waited until thanksgiving for this beer. Tough to know style based on other reviews. I see it as almost a BA wee heavy. Pours a deep red with a thin layer of brown head. Smells of bourbon barrels, sweet candy, slight earthiness. A boozy version of our family sweet potato with sugar and pecan on top. Taste is a nice bourbon booziness upfront with candied sweet potato and cinnammon.. Sticky as it warms to room temp

Happy turkey day to me! Poured from the 750ml bottle into my Bruery tulip.

Pour is brown, brown, brown. Red highlights. It appears to be medium-bodied. A one-finger off-white head forms immediately, but quickly fizzles away to nothing but a thin collar. It's not the most impressive looking brew, but I figured things would get better...

...and they did. This smells delightful. Like Thanksgiving in a glass. Good thing, too, because all I had to eat was turkey and mashed potatoes. This beer took care of the yams for me. Smell is of sweet potatoes and molasses up front. As the beer warms, I get a bit more of the spice and maple aromas. Very nice.

Taste follows the nose almost precisely. Yams, brown sugar, spice, maple, and molasses combine with the bourbon barrel component to produce a delicious beer. The regular Autumn Maple is a good, but not spectacular beer - this beer demonstrates the possibilities that barrel aging can provide. The barrel-aged Autumn Maple is head and shoulders above it's non-barrel-aged cousin.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, with faint carbonation. I feel like this could use a BIT more carbonation, but it's still quite good. No huge complaints.

Drinkability... hmm... well, I drank a whole 750ml bottle of this myself with no problems. It's pretty damn drinkable. Unlike many spiced beers, I don't get overwhelmed with the spiciness.

Solid, solid effort from the Bruery. They are quickly becoming one of my favorite breweries, along with Russian River, Three Floyds, and Cantillon. Highly recommended.

Shared bottle at the Bruery last Saturday. Cheers to the Coachella Valley Homebrew club for pitching in on this one.

Bruery tulip/snifter glass.

A: Slightly murky brown iced tea with a blend of muddy pondwater. Creamy coffee cake frosting head. nice legs and a reasonable dark dessert bubble formation on this one. If this thing was a cupcake, I'd eat that damn cupcake.

S: Big sweet rum character in the nose. Bananas Foster really comes off strong here for me. There's also quite a bit of warming alcohol, but I wouldn't quite call it hot. Creme Brulee burnt sugars, sweet potato casseroles, and bourbon caramels.

T: Savory sweet potato marshmellow casserole with a big wet bourbon kiss in the middle-end. The way the scorched sugars plays off the already sweet yams really brings forth that rum character that I attribute so strongly to a taste of bananas foster. This beer tastes submerged in melted hot fudge sundae caramels.

M: Low medium carbonation with a medium-full body. This holds up the sweet potato casserole flavors in a big way. I'd say this mouth is about perfect for complimenting that Thanksgiving feast so many of us will be having.

O: This is my front-runner for a big Thanksgiving dinner night cap. It might be a tad on the sweet end right now, but I think this beer is poised for greatness. This is most certainly a bottle worth popping fresh, and perhaps an even greater candidate to lay down for next years winter holidays. Don't fail to try this one fresh though, I think you'd be surprised.

2011 version bottle poured into a sniffer.

A: pours a dark muddy brown, with a khaki finger and a half of head that fades slowly leaving a nice film on the top and some head around the edge of the glass.

S: Big nose of the usual Autumn Maple smells, but with a very sweet bourbon accomplice. Smells almost like if you crossed the aroma of sweet potatoes and a pecan pie, and a glass a bourbon were all on the table near each other.

T: Initially there is a nice burst of bourbon, then it fades into autumn maple. if you havent had autumn maple read those reviews to understand what I am trying to say.

M: Mellow carbonation, very smooth, but it is hot at the end.

O: Very impressed with this one, wonder how a little age can help this out. Hard to think it could get better, unless they let it sit in bourbon longer.

A: poured a murky burnt orangish brown in color with a nice half finger of head that left some good frothy lacing sticking to the glass.

S: lots of spice such as nutmeg and cinnamon but with plenty of yams pumpkin, and toasted sweet potatoes. the bourbon barrel qualities were present with a good amount of booze heat and some good maple syrup sweetness.

T: bourbon barrel character was more pronounced on the palate but added some good accents alongside the signature yams, pumpkin, and sweet potato flavor, with plenty of nutmeg cinnamon spice, a touch of vanilla, maple syrup and mild underlying booze that was well balanced.

M: the brew was medium in body with a moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet, spice, mild boozy, bourbon barrely, yammy, and rich finish.

O: very well done variation of the autumn maple beer with great bourbon qualities and well balanced booze heat.

Pours a muddy, dark mahogany-brown with a dense ring of ivory and a steady stream of bubbles rising along the edges. Amazing nose of sweet caramel, maple-glazed sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, pecan, and intense Bourbon. So nice, I wish Yankee Candle made aromas like this. Taste is more roasted sweet potato, dark maple syrup, cinnamon, and delicious, delicious Bourbon. Sweet, decadent, and amazingly drinkable despite the 13% ABV. Mouthfeel is smooth and a bit syrupy, with a medium-full body and good carbonation. Overall a wonderful treat, hopefully I can get more in the future.

Bottle very generously shared by RoyMunson with PWoods and myself.
Pours a darker ruby brown then the regular Autumn Maple. Very little head forms on the pour, but is quickly gone before I can get started on this beer.
Smell is absolutely heavenly. Not sure what type of barrels they used for this beer, but it works. All the flavors of the regular Autumn Maple are complimented and accented with vanilla, oak and some bourbon. I cannot do justice with words how this beer smells.
Taste is just as good as the smell. This beer really takes to the barrels very well. This is one beer that as your drinking it, you know it's something special but you do everything you can to restrain so it lasts as long as it can.
Exceptional beer!

Thanks again Chad! 2011 Vintage weighing in at 13%ABV. Pours like murky brown swamp water with a small head. Scent is very strong with bourbon, maple, and yams. Taste is just as it smells. A ton of maple syrup blended nicely with delicious yams and sweet bourbon. Bourbon is not overwhelming, which is good considering this is fresh. I would imagine aging this one much longer. Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit on the syrupy side, but what would you expect from this kind of beer. Drinkability is high. Overall, this was a truly delightful beer that I wish I had bottles of for myself.

Bottled poured into a Lost Abbey snifter. Thanks to GregSVT for getting to try this one.

Pours a very hazy dark brown with a ring of thick head.

Very sweet up front. Brown sugar, caramel, and fall spices. As the beer warms, bourbon and vanilla comes through.

Taste follows the nose very closely. The aggressively sweet malt meshes with the bourbon to make this complex and more drinkable than the original version.

Creamy carbonation, with a medium body.

Overall, I really enjoyed this, and preferred it to the original Autumn Maple.

Had this on cask today at The Bruery tasting room.

A: Very, very dark brown with about one finger of an off white head.

S: Smells like Thanksgiving in a glass. Tons, and tons of yams and quite a bit of maple syrup. Vanilla from the barrels, and booze.

T: The warmth and lack of carbonation make the booze really come out in this one. After the initially booziness passes, the yam and maple flavors really shine through. On the finish, there is a very nice spice flavor which, again, is reminiscent of a Thanksgiving meal.

M: Warm, flat (as was advertised), sticky, boozy, and very full bodied.

D: The booze takes a bit of getting used to, but the flavors of this are just fantastic.

Arrived in a belgian glass. With about a finger of light brown head. The body is dark brown. On smelling it has yeast, a bit of maple, sweet malt along with a spicy candied yam. Taste follows with the smell with the malt and maple. There is also the yam which makes the over all flavors long lasting. It is not o srly thick on the palate. This as with others from the bruery are sippers.

Bottle from the Bruery, shared at a tasting. I shelled out $18 for this sucker whilst standing among the very fermenters and -bals that produced this beer, and I drank it out of a Bruery tulip glass.

A - Pours a dark mahogany brown with a small tan head.

S - Aroma is bourbon, yam, spice, wood, and caramel, a little sweet. Definitely more well-rounded and plain better than the standard Autumn Maple.

T - Wow, what great things -bal aging can do. This is much better than the standard yam juice-like Autumn Maple. Flavor is fairly sweet but not overwhelmingly so, with yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, oak, bourbon, vanilla, and spices. Really tasty.

Side note here: I was told while drinking this that what I always thought were yams are not actually yams, and that yams are actually ginormous African roots that are about the size of...well...I can't actually think of anything as big as an actual yam. They're like 2 or 3 feet long and heavy as all hell supposedly. Sorry, but the last time I checked, this is America, and if you don't like it, feel free to haul your ass out of here and go somewhere miserable like Canada. My mom always made a mashed yam dish every Thanksgiving since I was a little kid, and it was delicious. Furthermore, Patrick Rue says there are yams in this beer, and I guarantee you he didn't get huge-ass 500 pound tubers shipped in from Africa. If you deny that those orange-fleshed potato-like things are yams, you are basically slapping my mother and Patrick Rue in the face. I do not take kindly to that.

M - Palate is smooth and creamy with some spice and medium-full body. Not boozy at all.

D - Good. This does not get cloying like regular Autumn Maple, nor is it Lost Abbey flat like 2008 Autumn Maple. Great beer overall, definitely benefited from hanging out in those -bals.
