Thanks again Chad! 2011 Vintage weighing in at 13%ABV. Pours like murky brown swamp water with a small head. Scent is very strong with bourbon, maple, and yams. Taste is just as it smells. A ton of maple syrup blended nicely with delicious yams and sweet bourbon. Bourbon is not overwhelming, which is good considering this is fresh. I would imagine aging this one much longer. Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit on the syrupy side, but what would you expect from this kind of beer. Drinkability is high. Overall, this was a truly delightful beer that I wish I had bottles of for myself.

Had this on cask today at The Bruery tasting room.

A: Very, very dark brown with about one finger of an off white head.

S: Smells like Thanksgiving in a glass. Tons, and tons of yams and quite a bit of maple syrup. Vanilla from the barrels, and booze.

T: The warmth and lack of carbonation make the booze really come out in this one. After the initially booziness passes, the yam and maple flavors really shine through. On the finish, there is a very nice spice flavor which, again, is reminiscent of a Thanksgiving meal.

M: Warm, flat (as was advertised), sticky, boozy, and very full bodied.

D: The booze takes a bit of getting used to, but the flavors of this are just fantastic.

Bottled poured into a Lost Abbey snifter. Thanks to GregSVT for getting to try this one.

Pours a very hazy dark brown with a ring of thick head.

Very sweet up front. Brown sugar, caramel, and fall spices. As the beer warms, bourbon and vanilla comes through.

Taste follows the nose very closely. The aggressively sweet malt meshes with the bourbon to make this complex and more drinkable than the original version.

Creamy carbonation, with a medium body.

Overall, I really enjoyed this, and preferred it to the original Autumn Maple.

Arrived in a belgian glass. With about a finger of light brown head. The body is dark brown. On smelling it has yeast, a bit of maple, sweet malt along with a spicy candied yam. Taste follows with the smell with the malt and maple. There is also the yam which makes the over all flavors long lasting. It is not o srly thick on the palate. This as with others from the bruery are sippers.

Consumed with Thanksgiving dinner, served in a chalice.

Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Looks like an autumn afternoon. The head is whispy but has decent retention.

Lots of yams, wood, caramel, very sweet in the nose, and naturally, taste is similar. It's got spices as you would assume, but it's not as overbearing as I thought it may be. Brown sugar, maple with a smidge of grit. As with most Bruery offerings I've had, the barrel has been quite kind to this.

I polished about 500ml of this 750ml by myself and I was left drooping. That minor quibble aside, this is a great beer and will be in my Thanksgiving rotation going forward.

Bottle from the Bruery, shared at a tasting. I shelled out $18 for this sucker whilst standing among the very fermenters and -bals that produced this beer, and I drank it out of a Bruery tulip glass.

A - Pours a dark mahogany brown with a small tan head.

S - Aroma is bourbon, yam, spice, wood, and caramel, a little sweet. Definitely more well-rounded and plain better than the standard Autumn Maple.

T - Wow, what great things -bal aging can do. This is much better than the standard yam juice-like Autumn Maple. Flavor is fairly sweet but not overwhelmingly so, with yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, oak, bourbon, vanilla, and spices. Really tasty.

Side note here: I was told while drinking this that what I always thought were yams are not actually yams, and that yams are actually ginormous African roots that are about the size of...well...I can't actually think of anything as big as an actual yam. They're like 2 or 3 feet long and heavy as all hell supposedly. Sorry, but the last time I checked, this is America, and if you don't like it, feel free to haul your ass out of here and go somewhere miserable like Canada. My mom always made a mashed yam dish every Thanksgiving since I was a little kid, and it was delicious. Furthermore, Patrick Rue says there are yams in this beer, and I guarantee you he didn't get huge-ass 500 pound tubers shipped in from Africa. If you deny that those orange-fleshed potato-like things are yams, you are basically slapping my mother and Patrick Rue in the face. I do not take kindly to that.

M - Palate is smooth and creamy with some spice and medium-full body. Not boozy at all.

D - Good. This does not get cloying like regular Autumn Maple, nor is it Lost Abbey flat like 2008 Autumn Maple. Great beer overall, definitely benefited from hanging out in those -bals.

Thanks to mymrnngjckt for sharing this one. A 750ml bottle. Uncapped and poured into my snifter. Appears a clear deep chestnut color with about a finger of off white foam. Nose and flavors consist of subtle bourbon notes, caramelized yams, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, spicy yeast, light brown sugar, some alcohol, maple in the nose, especially as it warms. Nearly full bodied and smooth with adequate carbonation. The bourbon never gets in the way of the drinkability here. Tasty stuff overall. Thanks again Kevin!

A: A murky brown with one thin ring of foam sitting on the edges.

S: burnt caramel and vanilla, followed by sweet autumn spices(all spice, cloves...). There is some dry figs and raisins

T: Much like the regular autumn maple, it is heavily spiced with pumpkin/autumn spices, but it is rounded out by the maple and then the vanilla and caramel from the barrel. A slight bit of woodiness is present as well.

M: There is lots of flavor and it is a bit syrupy. Slight booziness. I would have liked a bit more carbonation.

D: It's easy to drink, but with all of the spices it can get a bit overwhelming.

Served from bottle into a Bruery tulip. Poured brown with a half finger off-white head. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, wood, and subtle sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, yams, sweet alcohol, vanilla, maple syrup, oak, and subtle spices. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. After seeing some reviews on this one, I had a pretty good idea on what I was getting into. However, what I found was quite a bit more than I would have anticipated. The aroma was extremely nice on this one. Almost too awesome as it took me quite awhile to get to the first sip. On the first sip I am slammed in the face with yams. On the followthrough I have the nice lingering vanilla that refreshes the palate and invites you back for a night cap. A really well done brew that I'm definitely glad I had a full 750 mL for myself to enjoy, even though the volume along with ABV might make me regret that decision.

Beer pours a murky brown with a very small off white lacing head, appears to be on the lower end of the carbonation spectrum, not much going on bubble wise but very appealing. The smell is very bold with bourbon, vanilla, oak, yams, brown sugar and raisin. The taste pretty much matches the nose, can't believe how much of a different beer this is compared to regular Autumn Maple. The mouthfeel is fairly creamy in body, more carbonation then I expected for the appearance. A great beer that really highlights the good from barrel aging.

Trying a 2011 and 2009 vintage side-by-side.

2011--pours a surprisingly dark brown with two fingers khaki head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.
2009--pours a dark mahogany with less than a finger of beige head that recedes into a thin ring with no lacing.

2011--lots of sweet potatoes, maple, and vanilla on the nose at first with notes of caramel and pumpkin spice. Oak and bourbon bring up the finish.
2009--loads of yams, vanilla, and caramel with pumpkin spices playing a minor role. There are some faint oak and bourbon notes.

2011--lots of sweet yam, vanilla, and pumpkin spice notes at first with caramel and toffee also there. Oak flavors and bourbon bring up the finish with a light alcohol burn.
2009--vanilla, caramel, and yams dominate with light spice notes. Bourbon and toffee with some oak notes bring up the finish with a slight alcohol presence.

2011--medium body with lowish carbonation, this beer is surprisingly light for such a high abv beer. It's almost watery.
2009--medium body with low carbonation, this beer is sticky thick, though is also slightly watery.

2011-- a very good beer overall. Very complex and tasty without being overly sweet and boozy.
2009--this one is also good, though the bourbon presence is subdued and it's slightly sweeter. It's still tasty, though.

Ultimately, I think the 2011 is a bit better. They're both good, but the fresher bottle is a bit more complex. I think one year might be the sweet spot for this beer.

This beer is a sweet score. Thanks to whichever Eric cracked this beauty!

Drank it side-by-side with its brother, and everything was better with the barrel aged. Better head retention (this was like meringue), and a more complex flavour profile. Great bourbon notes brought wood and vanilla to both the flavour and the nose. Sweet spiciness, caramel, sweet bread. Everything is meatier than the non-barrel aged, inclding the body, which was pretty chewy.

Seriously good stuff.

had this one for a while...thanks to CAbeerCAbeerCA for the hookup. enjoyed from a bruery snifter.

a - brew poured a fairly muddy looking brown that settled into the glass a maroon purple with a finger of foamy fizzy head that was gone quick leaving some spotty head islands on the surface and a ring around the glass.

s - really nice yam, sweet potato autumn spicing with a huge glazing of caramel toffee over the top. nice bourbon vanilla-y vibe.

t - booze soaked yam. caramel, vanilla. grape in the background.

m - the abv is really well masked on this. doesn't feel big at all.

o - overall, better than i had expected. the barrel really adds a nice element to this beer. i don't want to say rumpkin since rumpkin is in a league of its own, but that beer is reminiscent of how wonderful the barrel helps for a vegetable beer like this. really tasty.

A- A rich deep brownish color. A pleasant whitish tan head forms at first, and dissipates to a light ring around the top of the glass.

S- It actually has some soury notes to it at first. I smell the sweet yams and some maple, as well as hints of vanilla and bourbon. I gave my roomate a glass, and the first thing he said was "This smells sour"

T- Quite the opposite of the sour smell, very smooth and sweet. I don't get a ton of bourbon, but can taste the maple syrup and notes of brown sugar. The bourbon is mainly notice in some vanilla and booziness in the aftertaste.

M- Not a whole lot of carbonation, but the body is perfect. The taste is very complex, but the aftertaste dies out pretty quickly.

O- This was pretty darn good. I could use a touch more in the bourbon department, but very tasty none the less. Would have again.

This review is brought to you by my up-until-recently misplaced beer journal. Luckily, I was very detailed in my written descriptions, so I am reviewing this verbatim...this was shared by treyrab on 10/3/10, so the review has been a long time coming. Poured into a tulip glass...

The body is deep brown in color. Some sediment floats just above a thin layer of yeast that has settled on the bottom of my glass. There is neither head that lasts any appreciable amount of time nor lacing.

The aroma is full of brown sugar and sweet potato casserole. There are also raisins, dates, oaky tannins, and vanilla from the barrel aging process. This really reminds me of the casserole that we have at Thanksgiving every year. The flavor builds more upon the already compelling aroma. Cinnamon joins the brown sugar and sweet potatoes as bourbon accents the taste of the base fall beer. The bourbon also amplifies the oak and vanilla, providing more balance. Dark fruits round out the flavor as the raisins and dates come full circle. The exhale brings warm ethanol that complements the rest of the flavors.

The beer is a medium consistency with low to medium carbonation. It feels syrupy on the palate in the finish. The yam and bourbon bring this Belgian beer into a completely unique category all its own. The spices are warming, but not overpowering, making this a perfect beer for a cool or chilly fall day.

Ah, sweet, sweet -bal aging.

Pours a dark murky brown with a surprisingly robust tan/light brown head. Force carbonated? If so, FTW. FTW, indeed.

Smells like dessert! Some sweet molasses laden bourbon, some pumpkin/yam, and an interesting musty spiciness.

Taste is really nice, and this is an improvement by leaps and bounds over the non -bal aged version. Somehow, it actually has more carbonation, too. Dappled sugars/caramel malt/bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, and a touch of molasses round it out. Really quite nice. Some interesting ... and unidentifiable for me ... spices to it.

Not as drinkable as I would have liked, but excellent nonetheless. One of the most unique drinking experiences of my life.

From 11/26/13 notes. Bought 1 of these in the RS this year. Bottled 09/20/13, poured from a 750ml bottle into my Bruery tulip.

a - Pours a murky, reddish brown color with two inches of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, dark fruits, bourbon, pumpkin, oak, alcohol, toasted malts, and light caramel. As it warms more sweet bourbon comes out and it gets better. Pretty nice.

t - Tastes of bourbon, pumpkin, sweet dark fruits, cinnamon, cloves , vanilla, oak, toasted malts, and toffee and caramel malts. Very nice taste; more bourbon and pumpkin (I know it's yams but tastes like pumpkin to me), and nice vanilla and caramel too. Step up from the nose for me.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth and almost no alcohol heat which is awesome.

o - Overall a pretty good "pumpkin" style beer, and miles ahead of the normal Autumn Maple base beer, which I'm not the biggest fan of. A beer that gets much better as it warms up, with some nice sweet bourbon and very easy to drink for 13% ABV. I only grabbed one this year in case I didn't like it and wished I had grabbed 2; next year I'd buy 2 of them.

A thanks goes out to my pal Hophead22 for sending me this brew about a year ago. Thought it would be the perfect beer to cap off the Pittsburgh Tasting of the Ages.

A: Pours a dark brown with nice tan head. The head doesn't last too long before going to a thin ring. Nice and dark with some mahogany hues.

S: Smells like a nice Belgian Quad with dates, yams, brown sugar, cherries, rum-soaked raisins, and Belgian funk spices. A lot going on in the smell and bourbon rounds it out.

T: Very nice and warming. The perfect fall warmer. Nice bourbon soaked dark fruits (raisins, figs, dates) blended with some vanilla, brown sugar, yams, and pepper. Perhaps hints of cherry as well.

M/D: Very nice and creamy. A nice warmer that I could sip on all night on a cold fall/winter night.

750 ML into a tulip

P: Deep murky brown with a soapy head of tan foam that showed decent retention, and left only small fingers of lace as it sank to a thick halo on top.

A: Bourbon is right upfront, but it doesn't smell so boozy that it overwhelms everything else. The base beer is still there with yams, maple, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a hint of cocoa when it gets warmer. Curiously, I also get some plastic notes that reveal themselves after each swirl of the glass, then goes away as the foam dies back down. Weird, but smells pretty good nonetheless.

T: Thankfully, no plastic shows up on the palate, and right off the bat you can tell that this is a well-made beer. My first thought is how impressed I am that they managed to pack this much bourbon flavor into a beer without all the boozy heat that usually coincides. It's actually pretty amazing how well it's integrated into the rest of the profile. Speaking of which, the yams are not as prominent as they were in the nose. That's probably because they're buried under the huge helpings of maple and vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Just like in the nose, subtle chocolate comes out once it had a chance to breathe a bit. There is some heat that warms up the throat and chest on the sweet finish, but it's minimal for this fresh of a barrel-aged beer.

M: This is a full bodied, glassy smooth, mouth-coatingly viscous beer that goes down pretty easily for a 10% beast. Fits the brew nicely.

Notes: I'm not a huge fan of the regular version of Autumn Maple, but considering the fact that I don't really dig on "pumpkin" beers that much, it's still decent. But this is better. The barrel-aging has amplified the profile and has integrated some delicious bourbon into the beer without making it a complete boozy mess. Not only does it add depth and complexity, it just flat-out makes it more interesting. Recommended

Alex (MasterSki) busted this out at a recent tasting with some other BA friends.

A: Pours a murky hazy brownish color that almost looks like apple cider that starts off with a finger of bubbly khaki/off-white colored head that settles down to just a rim around the edge.

S: Smells like sweet potato, honey, pumpkin pie, vanilla, molasses, maple syrup - most of what it says on the bottle

T: Tastes like a pumpkin beer even though they said there aren't any pumpkins - similar to the smell though with sweet potato, honey, pumpkin pie, vanilla, maple syrup, molasses with a slight bit of bourbon/alcohol that actually goes well with the flavor

M: Kinda of thin and watery, but I think it fits pretty well.

D: There is no way I'd want the whole 750mL but a few pours was a nice treat....I think this would be a nice after dinner drink; I was skeptical but pleastantly surprised with how it tasted

Poured from a capped 750ml bottle into two St. Bernardus goblets. Special thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist. Extra special thanks to route66pubs for this from our recent trade!

100% Barrel Aged

A: Pours a cloudy/murky milk chocolate brown. A vigorous pour nets barely any foam. Rather still and lifeless. Pours much like the 2008 (non barrel aged) version of this. Despite the lack of head, some flecks of lace were left behind. Lots of suspended sediment, as well.

S: Pretty healthy bourbon aromas mixed with some savory fruit and hints of tangy citrus, maple sugar, and pumpkin pie spices.

T: Same as above. As it warms, the savory yammy and bourbon soaked oak flavors become more apparent. The spices are there, but not overly "spicy". Heather noticed vanilla, toasted almond, and loads of caramel. Like a boozy/burny candy apple. She also noted that the finish has a tart/tangy granny smith apple flavor.

M: Sweet and slick with a surprising amount of tingle considering the lack of carbonation. Must be due to the abv. Not syrupy in the least. Excellent!

D: We were certainly worried by the lack of carbonation, but this more than made up for it with the spicy/peppery tingle that it lays across the tongue. Another excellent Bruery beer!

Appearance: Slightly cloudy medium dark-brown color orange overtones. Has a moderate light beige head that faded fairly quickly.

Smell: Vanilla, baked yams, brown sugar, some bourbon and slight cinnamon/allspice notes. Also has some very faint yeasty notes

Taste: The vanilla, baked yams, brown sugar, Bourbon, and faint cinnamon/allspice notes in the nose come through in the taste.

Mouth-feel: The light side of Medium-bodied with a fairly low-level of carbonation.

Overall: An interesting take on Autumn Maple. While the barrel adds some interesting elements, some of the sweet potato pie elements of the base beer are somewhat lost in the background.

S: bourbon oak, vanilla, sweet tones of maple + molasses, interesting spice smell that reminds me of autumn and fallen leaves; gf says pancakes and can't really disagree.
T: Distinct taste of yams; very different and unique; bourbon and alcohol backed with cinnamon and spices.
M: medium with more carbonation than expected.
A sipper. At first a bit taken aback by the yam taste, but it grew on me as it warmed. A decent beer, but I wouldn't say I was blown away

Pours a pretty clear reddish brown, some orange highlights, thin off white head forms and settles to a thin ring, a couple lace spots stick.

Smell is nice, better than the original, yams and caramel, woody, big vanilla, bourbon, some alcohol, a bit sweeter with some sherry notes, spices are better integrated, real light cinnamon and nutmeg, yam character is better.

Taste is similar, just a smoothed out version without the high carbonation, caramel, yams, vanilla, coconut, big barrel character, boozy middle, light spice and bit of sourness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied wtih low carbonation, pretty good. I dug this one better than non BA Autumn Maple. Thanks Eric!

Taster at the Reserve Society Barrel Aged Tasting, session one.

This is a review of the 2009 version.

A: The pours a cloudy ruby brown, with just a ring of creamy beige head.

S: Scents of brown sugar, yams, light caramel, bourbon, vanilla, and oak.

T: Pretty solidly mirrors the nose, blended flavors of yams, oak, bourbon, brown sugar & some vanilla. Spicing is very light and it's a bit thinner then I like, and expected.

M: Medium mouth, light to medium carbonation.
