Thanks to Overlord for picking one of these up for me. Served in a FoBAB mini-pint taster glass.

A - This is one homely brew. It's a turbid unfiltered dirty murky brown color. A half-finger of big bubbles that dissipates quickly to a ring. No lace.

S - Roasted yams, spice, a bit of booze, some butterscotch-y barrel flavors, and more spice. Smells like some pumpkin beers I've had. Molasses comes out more as it warms up.

T - The taste is significantly less spicy, with only a bit of nutmeg in the finish. As a result I like it a bit more than the smell, but not enough to give it an extra half point. Wish I could score this a 4.25, but unfortunately things don't work that way here. The barrel flavor is pretty light, mostly brown sugar, caramel, molasses, maple syrup, and a light tannic and butterscotch finish.

M - Sticky, medium body, mild carbonation, a bit of heat. Compared to the Firestone 11 I just had it feels a little thin, but otherwise it's pretty good.

D - I don't think I could drink a lot of this one - the 6-8 oz was more than enough. Like pumpkin beers it's good for a once a year seasonal type of thing.

Alex (MasterSki) busted this out at a recent tasting with some other BA friends.

A: Pours a murky hazy brownish color that almost looks like apple cider that starts off with a finger of bubbly khaki/off-white colored head that settles down to just a rim around the edge.

S: Smells like sweet potato, honey, pumpkin pie, vanilla, molasses, maple syrup - most of what it says on the bottle

T: Tastes like a pumpkin beer even though they said there aren't any pumpkins - similar to the smell though with sweet potato, honey, pumpkin pie, vanilla, maple syrup, molasses with a slight bit of bourbon/alcohol that actually goes well with the flavor

M: Kinda of thin and watery, but I think it fits pretty well.

D: There is no way I'd want the whole 750mL but a few pours was a nice treat....I think this would be a nice after dinner drink; I was skeptical but pleastantly surprised with how it tasted

Bottle from the Bruery, shared at a tasting. I shelled out $18 for this sucker whilst standing among the very fermenters and -bals that produced this beer, and I drank it out of a Bruery tulip glass.

A - Pours a dark mahogany brown with a small tan head.

S - Aroma is bourbon, yam, spice, wood, and caramel, a little sweet. Definitely more well-rounded and plain better than the standard Autumn Maple.

T - Wow, what great things -bal aging can do. This is much better than the standard yam juice-like Autumn Maple. Flavor is fairly sweet but not overwhelmingly so, with yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, oak, bourbon, vanilla, and spices. Really tasty.

Side note here: I was told while drinking this that what I always thought were yams are not actually yams, and that yams are actually ginormous African roots that are about the size of...well...I can't actually think of anything as big as an actual yam. They're like 2 or 3 feet long and heavy as all hell supposedly. Sorry, but the last time I checked, this is America, and if you don't like it, feel free to haul your ass out of here and go somewhere miserable like Canada. My mom always made a mashed yam dish every Thanksgiving since I was a little kid, and it was delicious. Furthermore, Patrick Rue says there are yams in this beer, and I guarantee you he didn't get huge-ass 500 pound tubers shipped in from Africa. If you deny that those orange-fleshed potato-like things are yams, you are basically slapping my mother and Patrick Rue in the face. I do not take kindly to that.

M - Palate is smooth and creamy with some spice and medium-full body. Not boozy at all.

D - Good. This does not get cloying like regular Autumn Maple, nor is it Lost Abbey flat like 2008 Autumn Maple. Great beer overall, definitely benefited from hanging out in those -bals.

Solid brew. Bourbon is powerful so I'd age this for a year or so. Shared by the Bruery crew at downtown johnny browns. Really pure sweet potato pumpkin spice yam or whatever you want to call it flavors. Bourbon / alc cleans this up and it feels lite on the palate. Great to try and I believe this was under $20? Nice price for a BA brew. Would love to re-try at year 1 or 2.

Bottle very generously shared by RoyMunson with PWoods and myself.
Pours a darker ruby brown then the regular Autumn Maple. Very little head forms on the pour, but is quickly gone before I can get started on this beer.
Smell is absolutely heavenly. Not sure what type of barrels they used for this beer, but it works. All the flavors of the regular Autumn Maple are complimented and accented with vanilla, oak and some bourbon. I cannot do justice with words how this beer smells.
Taste is just as good as the smell. This beer really takes to the barrels very well. This is one beer that as your drinking it, you know it's something special but you do everything you can to restrain so it lasts as long as it can.
Exceptional beer!

A: A murky brown with one thin ring of foam sitting on the edges.

S: burnt caramel and vanilla, followed by sweet autumn spices(all spice, cloves...). There is some dry figs and raisins

T: Much like the regular autumn maple, it is heavily spiced with pumpkin/autumn spices, but it is rounded out by the maple and then the vanilla and caramel from the barrel. A slight bit of woodiness is present as well.

M: There is lots of flavor and it is a bit syrupy. Slight booziness. I would have liked a bit more carbonation.

D: It's easy to drink, but with all of the spices it can get a bit overwhelming.

Bottle from HopHead84. Thanks, Shane. You're like some kind of alcoholic Santa Claus, randomly delivering delicious new beers to the drunken masses.

Pours a clear but dark amber, appropriately autumnal, with a small white head that settles to a disc around the glass.

The nose has a massive yam presence, sweet and caramelized, baked with brown sugar and drizzled with maple syrup. Whiskey barrel notes of vanilla, spicy oak, and warming alcohol enhance the already rich base beer. There's a spicy component as well, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. This smells decadent.

The taste lives up to the nose, sweet yams marrying maple syrup and brown sugar, and backed by a huge boozy barrel presence. Spiciness comes through mid-palate, cinnamon and nutmeg most prominently. While this is fairly hot, the solventy element works beautifully thanks to the sheer richness of the base beer. Full bodied with moderate carbonation, a touch syrupy but surprisingly drinkable. While this is sweet from start to end, the finish reveals some mild woody tannins that add a balancing element.

Ah, sweet, sweet -bal aging.

Pours a dark murky brown with a surprisingly robust tan/light brown head. Force carbonated? If so, FTW. FTW, indeed.

Smells like dessert! Some sweet molasses laden bourbon, some pumpkin/yam, and an interesting musty spiciness.

Taste is really nice, and this is an improvement by leaps and bounds over the non -bal aged version. Somehow, it actually has more carbonation, too. Dappled sugars/caramel malt/bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, and a touch of molasses round it out. Really quite nice. Some interesting ... and unidentifiable for me ... spices to it.

Not as drinkable as I would have liked, but excellent nonetheless. One of the most unique drinking experiences of my life.

Bourbon barrels to Autumn Maple. The regular version is awesome on its own, so what could adding liquor to the mix do to the beer? On-tap at the source itself, on to the beer:

Colored almost like autumn itself. Brown with orange hues and an accent of red. A short lived head on top, which drops to a lace around the glass. The aroma brings some aspects of Autumn Maple, yams and spices being prevalent, and the added characteristics of the bourbon barrel, booze and syrup. I could probably add this to my waffles for a change.

With so much of the barrel aged character in play of the beer's taste, it tastes like I have a small glass of yam liquor in front of me. There are traces of cinnamon and allspice to lift the experience. We have a big portion of sherry, as well of alcohol which acts as a two way street; it dampens some of the sweetness, but also perhaps being spoiled by The Bruery's ability to mask high alcohol beers, I get a good dose of strong alcohol. Still, it remains a very good beer. It's a full bodied beer with a smooth texture, but with a boozy character.

Autumn Maple with a twist. Sometimes you need a twist from ordinary, and the barrel aged version accomplishes that while maintaining greatness.

Bourbon is huge in this and it is heavy, heavy HEAVY. Very sweet, very syrupy, very boozey. Hard for me to work through even a small pour. Tons of flavor and a rich smell full of dark fruit, bourbon, maple, malt, vanilla and brown sugar. Just too sweet and syrupy for me.

Arrived in a belgian glass. With about a finger of light brown head. The body is dark brown. On smelling it has yeast, a bit of maple, sweet malt along with a spicy candied yam. Taste follows with the smell with the malt and maple. There is also the yam which makes the over all flavors long lasting. It is not o srly thick on the palate. This as with others from the bruery are sippers.

On cask at the Bruery. Pours a very dark brown with tan head. Smells and tastes of yams, maple, nutmeg and assorted other pumpkin spices and, of course, bourbon. The Bruery has shown itself to be very good at using bourbon barrels to improve beer without turning it into a bourbon bomb - and BA AM is no exception - the bourbon is present but didn't dominate. I am giving this beer a "Good" score for taste, but I must admit that I couldn't drink it on a regular basis. It's very interesting and I appreciate the creative effort. This is a fun beer to enjoy a few times throughout the fall. Mouthfeel is fairly thick, and carbonation was present but somewhat low. The beer was served pretty warm, which clashed with the hot weather outside, but that's not the beer's fault. Overall, a very interesting beer that I'm glad Bruery released. I look forward to cracking open a bottle of this at Thanksgiving.

On cask at The Bruery. Served still, barrel sample style.

Pours a complicated dark brown... amber towards the rim of the glass, but a deep maroon color in the bottom. Despite being served still, a long lasting tan head crowns it beautifully. The nose is ripe with yams and rich spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, all topped off with toasted marshmallows. No booziness despite sitting in barrels eleven months.

Tasting the 100% Barrel Aged Autumn Maple was an experience I savored for an extended period of time. The best way I can explain this beer is that it takes everything good and desirable in the Autumn Maple and amplifies it to the next level, meanwhile any of the harsh elements all got smoothed out inside those barrels. While barrels often transform a beer, in this instance it tasted like a natural evolution. Instead of tasting bourbon, whiskey, or oak I tasted the original elements of the beer, just simply made better. The roasted yam flavor became more genuine and rich. The flavor of nutmeg reminded me of roasted nuts. Toasted marshmallow sweetness and spicy cinnamon all smoothed out the experience, undoubtedly aided by the additions of bourbon and rye whiskey barrels.

The mouthfeel is somewhat dense and creamy, but not slippery. This was described as still, though there may have been the sightest hint of carbonation, or that may have just been the bitterness giving me a tingle. Some have complained about this, and I admit I had to sip this one very slowly to appreciate it, but appreciate it I did. For the record, the bottled version is fully carbonated, I tasted it, but I actually think I preferred this one still. A delicious beer that I thoroughly enjoyed.

There is not a better pumpkin (or yam, or spiced) beer out there, and so obviously my scoring reflects this.

Consumed this on 9/4/09 at The Bruery.

A: Just about black with a slight hint of brown coloring that helped support a creamy vanilla bean hue head. Lacing was mediocre, but other than that, a good looking brew.

S: Yams, cinnamon, gingerbread, roasted/chocolate malts, and a bourbon aroma that hits you hot and hard at first...but then settles down once your nostrils get used to it.

T: More chocolate notes than I anticipated along with gingerbread and Thanksgiving/Christmas like spices. The bourbon adds a nice sweet note as well, but can be harsh at times. A definite winter warmer for sure!

M: This is probably the worst part about this beer. I understand it was served on cask, but I felt it needed more carbonation and a creamier body. Too much of a cotton mouth feel!

D: The actual smell and taste of Barrel Aged AM was awesome. But again, I think the little things like the overall hotness and mouthfeel took away too much. I would much prefer the regular version over this...although, I still think this is a good beer.

Overall: A try it to must try beer. Cheers!

On cask at The Bruery, this is the 100% Barrel Aged Autumn Maple,

A: Pours a very dark brown, with a light, creamy white head.

S: Beautiful smell. Pumpkins and yams, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, spiced cream, smells just like fall. Best part of the beer.

T: The smooth barrel aged malt comes out first with the vegetal yam component. Note of chocolate in there too. Very spicy, cinnamon and nutmeg in the finish.

M: Relatively flat out of the cask, but all the sugar and dextrins give it some good body.

D: I was glad to get the opportunity to try the barrel aged version. Do I like it as much as the regular on-tap version, I don't know, they certainly have some differences, but I have a feeling this would be a better brew out of the bottle.

Had this on cask today at The Bruery tasting room.

A: Very, very dark brown with about one finger of an off white head.

S: Smells like Thanksgiving in a glass. Tons, and tons of yams and quite a bit of maple syrup. Vanilla from the barrels, and booze.

T: The warmth and lack of carbonation make the booze really come out in this one. After the initially booziness passes, the yam and maple flavors really shine through. On the finish, there is a very nice spice flavor which, again, is reminiscent of a Thanksgiving meal.

M: Warm, flat (as was advertised), sticky, boozy, and very full bodied.

D: The booze takes a bit of getting used to, but the flavors of this are just fantastic.

Consumed on 9/4/2009 at The Bruery tasting room. This is a blend of Rye and Bourbon barreled Autumn Maple. Poured into a snifter, the beer is dark brown with traces of crimson and a suprisingly large creamy beige head. Retention is good and scattered lacing is left behind.

The nose is really fantasic. Bourbon is immediately evident as well as spicy rye. Maple and vanilla are apparent, and yams are subdued compared to the non-bal aged version. Molasses is pervasive and the bourbon remains strong throughout. Some spices (nutmeg and a little cinnamon) and alcohol are evident. A little booze is noticeable.The barrel aging has taken this beer to another level.

The flavor opens up boozy and sweet with plenty of maple. The bourbon is pervasive (again) and the rye is noticeable to a lesser extent. A nice level of boozy heat is evident. The spices are strong but not as stong as the regular version. The molasses and maple are quite nice. The finish is bourbon, sweet, and spicy.

The cask provides low carbonation but it's quite enjoyable. This beer really took to the barrels. Highly recommended. The ultimate fall beer.
