Trying a 2011 and 2009 vintage side-by-side.

A:
2011--pours a surprisingly dark brown with two fingers khaki head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.
2009--pours a dark mahogany with less than a finger of beige head that recedes into a thin ring with no lacing.

S:
2011--lots of sweet potatoes, maple, and vanilla on the nose at first with notes of caramel and pumpkin spice. Oak and bourbon bring up the finish.
2009--loads of yams, vanilla, and caramel with pumpkin spices playing a minor role. There are some faint oak and bourbon notes.

T:
2011--lots of sweet yam, vanilla, and pumpkin spice notes at first with caramel and toffee also there. Oak flavors and bourbon bring up the finish with a light alcohol burn.
2009--vanilla, caramel, and yams dominate with light spice notes. Bourbon and toffee with some oak notes bring up the finish with a slight alcohol presence.

M:
2011--medium body with lowish carbonation, this beer is surprisingly light for such a high abv beer. It's almost watery.
2009--medium body with low carbonation, this beer is sticky thick, though is also slightly watery.

O:
2011-- a very good beer overall. Very complex and tasty without being overly sweet and boozy.
2009--this one is also good, though the bourbon presence is subdued and it's slightly sweeter. It's still tasty, though.

Ultimately, I think the 2011 is a bit better. They're both good, but the fresher bottle is a bit more complex. I think one year might be the sweet spot for this beer.

Pours a dark tawny brown color with a decent sized tightly bubbled off white head with moderate retention and minimal lace. I can smell the barrel treatment as soon as I pop the cap off. Spicy, herbal, and peppery aromas are mixed with sweet dark sugars, vanilla, bourbon and oak. The flavor is definitely different. Sweet sugary malts up front are attacked by peppery herbal earthy flavors and just before it gets too weird the bourbon sweeps in with a bit of woodiness to cleanse things a bit. Long lingering sweet herbal bourbon flavor in the finish. Medium to thick body with a sweet almost sugary mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. Well this one certainly is different, but it really did grow on me after a pint. I don't think I've ever had the non barrel version, but it seems like without the barrel this would be a sweet and herbal mess. As is I kind of liked it, but not sure I would seek it out again.

2011 version bottle poured into a sniffer.

A: pours a dark muddy brown, with a khaki finger and a half of head that fades slowly leaving a nice film on the top and some head around the edge of the glass.

S: Big nose of the usual Autumn Maple smells, but with a very sweet bourbon accomplice. Smells almost like if you crossed the aroma of sweet potatoes and a pecan pie, and a glass a bourbon were all on the table near each other.

T: Initially there is a nice burst of bourbon, then it fades into autumn maple. if you havent had autumn maple read those reviews to understand what I am trying to say.

M: Mellow carbonation, very smooth, but it is hot at the end.

O: Very impressed with this one, wonder how a little age can help this out. Hard to think it could get better, unless they let it sit in bourbon longer.

Beer pours a murky brown with a very small off white lacing head, appears to be on the lower end of the carbonation spectrum, not much going on bubble wise but very appealing. The smell is very bold with bourbon, vanilla, oak, yams, brown sugar and raisin. The taste pretty much matches the nose, can't believe how much of a different beer this is compared to regular Autumn Maple. The mouthfeel is fairly creamy in body, more carbonation then I expected for the appearance. A great beer that really highlights the good from barrel aging.

2011 vintage, poured into a snifter.

Opaque mahogany, though a hold directly before a light reveals clearer amber edges. Very thin, airy, fuzzy head is gone in seconds.

In the nose, it's like the barrels have interacted with the maple and boosted it to superhuman levels. Oak, vanilla bean, cinnamon, honey, a bit of alcohol.

Less bourbon in the flavor, which is actually nice. The sweetness and spices from the usual beer shine through: cinnamon, yams, maple, brown sugar. The bourbon adds a nice boozy hit, brown sugar, vanilla, butterscotch and oak.

Soft, just a little thin, medium-light body. Low, fizzy carbonation and high tongue-numbing ABV. The body breaks into the suggestion of fizz as it moves. Might be a bit bigger to hoist the inner booze.

Autumn maple on its own is a bit sweet, but it's incredible how well the barrels temper that sugar. Drinkable for its booziness.

I busted this one out to share with a friend of mine. He bought me my first Autumn Maple so I decided he would be the perfect person to share it with.

A - Pours murky dark brown with a one and a half finger tall white head, dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving no lace what so ever down the glass.

S - Smells of rich brown sugar, yams, vanilla, warm bourbon, cinnamon, and caramel. The nose gets better as it warms up but it isn't very well balanced and never really wowed me.

T - Starts off with a good amount of yam flavor but that quickly fades into the shadows as the warm bourbon and sticky sweet brown sugar take over. Hints of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and other "Thanksgiving Spices" help round things out but this one is really all about the main flavors it seems.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Sweet, sticky, feel with some warm booze that lingers on the pallet long after consumption.

O - I knew going into this one that I may not enjoy it but I was pleasantly surprised. The BA worked pretty well with the base beer and it never really overpowered the base flavors. I still have one more of these, can't wait to see what a year or so does to it.

Pours a deep russet brown with minimal head and light, slightly prickly carbonation. Lots of sweetness up front from the maple and the yams. Good bit of spice and some mild astringent bitterness. Maple and yam are distinguishable. One of a few spiced beers that I have liked a whole lot. Would like more with a fuller mouth feel, but overall a solid beer.

A: chocolate-brown, thin sudsy head, healthy lace.

S: spiced and roasted nuts, it smells exactly like fruitcake, raisins molasses, allspice.

T: all the flavors from the nose, walnuts and raisins are really pronounced, also figs, dates, plums. Finish is boozy, lots of bourbon and oak.

M: light- to medium-bodied, burning alcohol finish, virtually interchangeable with a sip of whisky.

O: tastes more like Christmas pudding than Christmas pudding does, pudding coated in brandy/bourbon. Really delicious, I'd just as soon eat it.

750ml capped bottle into a Russian River wine glass

A: Pours a ruddy red/orange with a big light brown head and very little lacing. With such a big head I expected more lacing.

S: The nose is very similar to the original Autumn Maple with big aromas of baked yam, brown sugar, nutmeg, some vanilla, and a tart wine note I wasn't expecting. I thought there'd be more of a bourbon presence but it only shows itself in the form of the vanilla.

T: The taste is similar to the original as well with lots of nutmeg, yam, vanilla, and a tart grape/wine flavor. This almost tastes like it's wine barrel aged instead of bourbon barrel aged. It's still pretty tasty though.

M: The feel is medium bodied and very bubbly. A bit overcarbonated for my taste.

O: Given this was bourbon barrel aged I expected more bourbon and char flavor but what was there is still pretty tasty. I'm not sure if any age would help but it might settle down the spices and the yam and let the barrel come forward a bit more.

Bottled poured into a Lost Abbey snifter. Thanks to GregSVT for getting to try this one.

Pours a very hazy dark brown with a ring of thick head.

Very sweet up front. Brown sugar, caramel, and fall spices. As the beer warms, bourbon and vanilla comes through.

Taste follows the nose very closely. The aggressively sweet malt meshes with the bourbon to make this complex and more drinkable than the original version.

Creamy carbonation, with a medium body.

Overall, I really enjoyed this, and preferred it to the original Autumn Maple.

Ugly brown, quarter inch head.

Sweet yams, raisin, caramel, honey. Sweet and decadent.

Raisin, vanilla, toffee with rich, thick caramel and bourbon in the finish. Very good.

Light mouthfeel - could be a bit more dense. ABV tastes around 10%.

Sweet without being too sweet, desserty without being too filling, very good little beer here: seek out.

2011 Version

Look: Dark brown with a 1/4 inch head and ok retention

Smell: Nice brown sugar notes upfront that is backed up nicely by some bourbon and maple syrup

Taste: Maple syrup upfront with hints of oak and vanilla. Bourbon follows that and is faint but nice and on the back end you get quite a bit of alcohol which ruins the flavor.

Overall: Medium body with low carbonation and a bit of alcohol sting

Overall: I think the barrel aging actually made this beer less drinkable than the regular. The alcohol is overly present and very off putting. Glad I got to try this beer but I won't be doing that again unless it has some serious bottle age on it

Appearance: Slightly cloudy medium dark-brown color orange overtones. Has a moderate light beige head that faded fairly quickly.

Smell: Vanilla, baked yams, brown sugar, some bourbon and slight cinnamon/allspice notes. Also has some very faint yeasty notes

Taste: The vanilla, baked yams, brown sugar, Bourbon, and faint cinnamon/allspice notes in the nose come through in the taste.

Mouth-feel: The light side of Medium-bodied with a fairly low-level of carbonation.

Overall: An interesting take on Autumn Maple. While the barrel adds some interesting elements, some of the sweet potato pie elements of the base beer are somewhat lost in the background.

Taster at the Reserve Society Barrel Aged Tasting, session one.

This is a review of the 2009 version.

A: The pours a cloudy ruby brown, with just a ring of creamy beige head.

S: Scents of brown sugar, yams, light caramel, bourbon, vanilla, and oak.

T: Pretty solidly mirrors the nose, blended flavors of yams, oak, bourbon, brown sugar & some vanilla. Spicing is very light and it's a bit thinner then I like, and expected.

M: Medium mouth, light to medium carbonation.

O: Interesting. While not as spiced up as a fresh Autumn Maple, the added layers of oak, bourbon, and vanilla do add something nice.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter. Served in a dark bar.

Rosewood body with a light wheat collar. Viscous legs, weak amoebic lacing, poor retention.

Maple sgar, toffee, tobacco, vanilla, and rum in the nose. The bourbon contributes quite a lot without overwhelming the base. Plenty of clove and cinnamon emerge as the beer warms.

Baked yams, brown sugar, caramel, leather and a whisper of cocoa on the palate. Complex and festive. Finishes a little sweet, spicy, and just a touch hot.

Creamy, medium-bodied, with low but sufficient carbonation.

A modest improvement on the non-barrel-aged version, itself a unique twist on the average pumpkin beer.

A: Dark cinnamon stick brown with a massive light tan head.

S: Aroma of pungent spices, a blending of vanilla , bourbon, oak barrel aging and allspice mixing with sweet potatoes.

T: Taste is a little more spiced than I remember the standard Autumn maple being, but it has been a year since I have had one. There is a strong boozy taste from the bourbon barrel aging which I think is a positive but the body and mouthfeel seems to have been watered down as a result. There is more cinnamon and clove spicing also mixing in with the vanilla and bourbon flavors when compared from a year or two back with the non bourbon version.

M: Mouthfeel is light for a 10% beer and there is a light carbonation from the barrel aging.

A: Medium brown and quite murky. Topped with a light tan head with decent retention.

S: Bourbon with a good amount of rye. Dates and rich dark fruit suggest themselves and as well as brulee apricot.

T: Rye raisin bread with a honey date jam just about sums this up. I would add that there is a bit of a woody note as well as some booze, but not in a bourbon sort of a way. Autumn spices and yams finish it up.

M: Rich but nicely prickly.

O: Good stuff, and better than the original. However all and all this does not deserve it's hype. It's very rich and in the end underwhelming.

Dark maroon body with a small off white head.

Nose hits with bourbon first and then a good amount of sweetness. Sweet potato, brown sugar, cranberry and seasonal spices.

Even more sweetness than I expected in the flavor. Lots of brown sugar mixed with a sweet potato flavor. Sweet bourbon. Sweet everywhere, in fact cloying. Vanilla, caramel and light cinnamon on the finish with a lingering essence of toasted oak.

Bottle opened last night with Amyliz4. 2011 vintage. Served in a Bruery tulip.

Pours a very dark brown with a thin off-white head. Decent retention and a bit of spotty lacing as it goes down. The nose is really bourbon heavy, especially before it starts to warm up. At that point, the bourbon is still 85+% of the aroma, though there's a bit of the Autumn Maple spice in there as well. The flavor, on the other hand, is almost entirely bourbon along with some alcohol heat. Feel is better with some of the spices making an appearance again, plus the bourbon adds a nice -- but not overpowering -- boozy kick. Decent, but way too barrel heavy.

Shared bottle at the Bruery last Saturday. Cheers to the Coachella Valley Homebrew club for pitching in on this one.

Bruery tulip/snifter glass.

A: Slightly murky brown iced tea with a blend of muddy pondwater. Creamy coffee cake frosting head. nice legs and a reasonable dark dessert bubble formation on this one. If this thing was a cupcake, I'd eat that damn cupcake.

S: Big sweet rum character in the nose. Bananas Foster really comes off strong here for me. There's also quite a bit of warming alcohol, but I wouldn't quite call it hot. Creme Brulee burnt sugars, sweet potato casseroles, and bourbon caramels.

T: Savory sweet potato marshmellow casserole with a big wet bourbon kiss in the middle-end. The way the scorched sugars plays off the already sweet yams really brings forth that rum character that I attribute so strongly to a taste of bananas foster. This beer tastes submerged in melted hot fudge sundae caramels.

M: Low medium carbonation with a medium-full body. This holds up the sweet potato casserole flavors in a big way. I'd say this mouth is about perfect for complimenting that Thanksgiving feast so many of us will be having.

O: This is my front-runner for a big Thanksgiving dinner night cap. It might be a tad on the sweet end right now, but I think this beer is poised for greatness. This is most certainly a bottle worth popping fresh, and perhaps an even greater candidate to lay down for next years winter holidays. Don't fail to try this one fresh though, I think you'd be surprised.

Served at recommended cellar temp

App- Deep dense brown with crimson/amber edges. A two finger, crème colored head with a medium receding rate showed and fizzled away with loud production. Falls to a healthy pond layer of bubbles with a very good amount of lace/cling

Smell- Very good aromatics on this beer. Large amounts of bourbon sting with a softer vanilla. The spices of nutmeg and cinnamon come in next. Round out with a whispy booze and some candied brown sugar.

Taste- This is much more inline with the taste of the base beer just kicked up a notch. More smooth from the barrel and a layer of added richness and fullness. The bourbon of course comes first with vanilla layering underneath to cut the sting. The spices are a bit more prevalent in this version and the 13% is there and you know it but not too too overpowering.

Mouth- Medium to full bodied with a medium to low carbonation level. Residual vanilla bourbon notes.

Drink- I wasn't surprised I like this one the best. Barrel treatments bring out vanilla and I love me some vanilla. This was really a great beer. Balanced, layered, flavorful but not overpowering. I would love another bottle or on cask.

Poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: cloudy brown, minimal head, no lacing.

Smell: bourbon, maple, yams, brown sugar.

Taste: just as it smells, lots of bourbon, brown sugar and maple syrup.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, bubbly, crisp, boozy.

Overall: The bourbon taste overpowered the other typical autumn maple flavors. I'm hoping that as my other bottle ages, the bourbon will mellow a bit and allow the other flavors/aromas to come forward and balance this beer out. Still a very delightful beer.

Thanks again Chad! 2011 Vintage weighing in at 13%ABV. Pours like murky brown swamp water with a small head. Scent is very strong with bourbon, maple, and yams. Taste is just as it smells. A ton of maple syrup blended nicely with delicious yams and sweet bourbon. Bourbon is not overwhelming, which is good considering this is fresh. I would imagine aging this one much longer. Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit on the syrupy side, but what would you expect from this kind of beer. Drinkability is high. Overall, this was a truly delightful beer that I wish I had bottles of for myself.

Pours a hazy, slightly translucent brown with a big tannish head. Smells a touch boozy, a touch sour, combined with spiced, slightly candied sweet potato. The taste has a somewhat harsh boozy, bourbon finish. Tannic oak, bourbon, spiced, dry maple and sweet potato. Slick, medium heavy mouthfeel with lowish carbonation. Overall, this is a really interesting experiment that I certainly enjoy more than the regular autumn maple. There is quite a bit going on, but it is all a bit harsh. I think this might need some time. Fun spin on a fall seasonal without fake pumpkin juice in it.
