Notes / Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip. 2015 fall release.

initially looks pretty good, deep brown with some reddish tones and a nice light tan head. the head disappears pretty fast. there are a lot of carbonation bubbles along the side of the glass. no lacing at all.

aroma is only of dark fruits, plums, figs, etc.

does have a nice taste to it. pretty tart, little to no sweetness, a touch of vinegar, but the dominate flavor is a plumy one. no funkiness at all, which is ok by me.

a touch under medium on the mouth, finish is fruity and tart.

overall, I'm just getting into the sours, and this one was pretty good.

Poured the 2014 edition into a tulip glass in 2016.

L - Beautiful red brown color. Subtle, but present, head.
S - intense and spicy sour scents. Very much on the woody side rather than the citrus side of sours. Deep, complex, rich.
T - packs a punch of sour, again with very obvious oak influence--probably more than I've tasted in any recent beer. I also see what the label means by "leather and dark fruit." Again, very much on the dark side of sour. And the sourness lingers on the palate.
F - sharp and appropriate.
O - all around consistent and lived up to high expectations after a high price tag and holding this one for a while.

Bottle poured into a snifter

A: Pours deep reddish brown with a small tan head that settles to a thin layer and then just a ring leaving a little spotty lacing.

S: Fruity berry notes, slightly toasty malt, a little oak, and a bit of caramel/toffee sweetness.

T: Fruity up front, cherry, blackberry, lactic tartness, lemon, a little toasty malt, oak, and a hint of honey and toffee sweetness buried in there.

M: Medium body, moderately lively carbonation.

O: There's an amazing contrast between the smell and taste. On the nose the sweet fruity notes come through more, but the tartness takes over in the taste. Very cool beer.

750 ml bottle poured into a tulip glass

A: Pours a mahogany red with an off white, no head retention, no lacing, average amount of carbonation, beers is hazy, cloudy, looks great.

A: Dark sweet fruits, dark cherries, grapes, red wine vinegar, touch of oak, slight tart and funk aromas, very aromatic, no alcohol on the nose.

T: Oak, dark cherries, touch of leather, sour tart punch in the finish and lingers in the aftertaste, very dry finish, as the beer warms the sourness fades and more of the oak and leather come through, very nice.

M: Light/medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation that adds some crispness, finish is very dry, feels as if the beer evaporates in the mouth, alcohol is well hidden.

O: Very nice beer, most sour beers hit with sourness up front, Oude Tart saves it for the finish, nice balance of flavors, oak, dark cherries, red wine, not very sour, a well made beer, definitely will be a yearly purchase for me.

Quick review. 750ml into my Duvel tulip. Pours a headless, opaque-ish reddish caramel. Smells of pitted fruits, some lacto, spices, traces of oak. Tastes similar: lacto-tartness, oak, dark fruit & here some raspberry as well. Lowish carb, nicely delicate body. Overall quite nice.

750ml bottle.

A: Clear brown. Slightly reddish. No foam.
S: Toasted malty. Blue berry. Grape.
T: Moderate toasty. Medium and round sourness. Dry. Low bitterness. Tart like aftertaste, and it retains.
M: Medium body. Low carbonation.
O: Unfortunately, I was unable to find much oaky characters. The overall tasting texture is round and pleasant, though a little too simple.

A ruby crimson and brown pour, small 1/5" head on it, off white, more tan than anything. Aroma is wickedly sour dark fruit and oak. Really jumps at you.

More oak, delectable sour taste, mild brown malt notes, leather well done, dark fruit, dark cherry, plum. Geez this is amazing, is there a better Flanders? No, Cuvee des Jacobins is close, but this beer's run at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Fest is well deserved. Just phenomenal world class stuff. Love that you can still get this for less than $20, really makes chasing down rare stuff not worth it when this is relatively plentiful.

Bought this beer from a local bottle shop. It was flat so did not get a chance to fully evaluate. Love beers from these guys but getting sick of paying $20+ for a bottle and getting bad beers.

Burgundy red, with the smallest of heads. Mostly a film layer.

Smells like wine/grapes to me. Cherries??
The taste reminds me of this homemade Portugeuse wine(referred to as Blood), only sour and tart, with light carbonation. Dry in a good way. Balsalmic in the aftertaste. It just made me think of Bruchetta. Now im hungry.

Goes down super easy, delicious.

Maybe I got a bad bottle but I doubt it. This one fell way short of my expectations. Their Rueuze was phenomenal for a Gouze but this shot at a Flanders missed the mark. Maybe I'm off tonight but this seems very one dimensional. It's sour with a good flavor profile but there is almost no complexity... Very light in the funk dept and not much sweetness to balance out the tart. Mouthfeel is a little flat also. Not what I prefer in Flanders which is by far my favorite beer style.

Appearance: It has a very dark brown body and it is hard to interpret the clarity. There is no head at all. There are literally just a few bubbles...to the point where I could count them. No head means no lacing and no retention. I can't hear any carbonation in the glass either...this beer is completely still...

Aroma: Even before approaching the glass I get the aroma of tart cherries. The sourness is strong enough in the scent that it makes my mouth water just smelling it. There is light musty aroma in there as well, but it is mostly fruity.

Taste: It has a mellow sourness to the beer like eating a fruit that is just about to turn. It's nice.

Mouthfeel: It's not carbonated at all. It washes onto the palate like water and leaves it just as plainly. The sourness perks up the palate just enough to make it drinkable. The sourness does not linger on the palate for long. It is there and it is gone within seconds. It's very tart but drinkable.

Overall: I wasn't impressed by the beer. The lack of carbonation might have been a fluke but I probably wouldn't waste my time getting another one to find out. The flavors were decent and the aroma was excellent but the beer overall was a flop given the lack of presence on the palate. It was like I was drinking a beer that had been left out for a few days.

750ml - 2014

Pours a deep rich brown with tan head. Aroma is acidic, Earthy funk, dark fruit vanilla, oak, acetic. Flavor is fully sour (7/10) with slight Balsalmic notes and lots of sour cherry, red currant, caramel, fig, oak, vanilla, leather,
tobacco, and cranberry. Sort of a combo of a Flanders Red/Brown. Mouthfeel is medium and moderately carbonated. This beer is usually on point, but I have bought bottles that have been completely flat, and some way more acetic than others.

Deep bronze color with weak head and no retention. Sweet acetic, mildly lactic aroma. Very well balanced flavor between the sweet, malty and acidic. Dry and sticky feel. Weak carbonation. Very nice beer. True to the style and really tasty.

Look = 4.0 Dark brown pour with red highlights. 3 fingers of big bubbly brown/red head with good retention but little lace.
Aroma = 4.0 Sweet acidic and vinegar sour aroma, strong and appropriate.
Taste = 4.25 Intense sour on the tongue upfront and throughout the mouthfeel with a strong acidic aftertaste. The sour is intense and tasty but it’s hard to pick out individual flavors other than on the sweet side.
Feel = 4.25 Medium bodied with high carbonation; fizzy
Drinkability = 4.0 Intense sour decreases drinkability somewhat.
Overall = 4.125 Among the most sour of beers I’ve tasted yet; seems to overwhelm the rest of the flavors though. Still tasty.

A: 4.25 Pours a fairly hazy reddish-brown The two-inch, light tan head lasts a couple minutes and doesn’t leave much lace.

S: 4.25 Aromas are very similar to Rodenbach Grand Cru. Light vinegar starts off then moves into oak, cherries, caramel, and vanilla. Funk is a bit more prominent here with some earthiness and damp wood.

T: 4.5 Flavors also start off very similar to Grand Cru; slight sweetness at first followed by pleasant tartness. The pH is definitely lower in this beer with the funk being higher. Like the nose, there are berries, oak, and caramel. The earthiness of the funk is really interesting, almost having some Belgian lambic qualities. The finish has a very nice cereal, cracker quality.

M: 4.5 Body is really nice without being heavy. Carbonation is also superb and lively.

O: 4.5 I really enjoyed this beer and love how true to style it was while introducing some of its own flavors. Not sure it can really compete with Grand Cru (especially at twice the price) but it’s definitely a great beer and worth trying at least once.

This was not nearly as tart as I expected and that is a good thing. don't get me wrong, it's tart, but not sure I would describe it as reaching the level of mouth puckering. regardless, it's a really excellent sour. Read a review below which compares the taste to a dry cider and I agree though it still tastes more beer sour to me then cider sour

Deep rich Amber brown colored body. Head is a biscuit toasted light brown. Nose is gorgeous with tones of stone sour, pixie stick and bready malts. Lemon peel is there as well. Taste is abruptly tart and really gets the jowls going. Tannins play with the palate to add a nice sharpness. Really nice sour beer that is not for someone who doesn't like truly sour.

Soft aroma, just a little fruit must. Sharp upfront with a sting of tart with some dark fruit / grape. Out of the bottle there was big wave of lactic acid / bile, but as the beer warms to the recommended serving temp, that is undercut, especially with some subtle wood flavor. The fruit also becomes more pronounced, and with the acid it ends up almost being like a dry cider (not the artifical sugar bomb style). Finishes pretty crisp, with some lasting sour bite, but nothing puckering. Definitely go warmer, it blossoms wonderfully. Just a little too much lactic for my taste, but still a very good concoction.

1 year old 750 mL bottle into a tulip. Pours a whiskey-ish red/brown and settles ruby-red in the glass. A tall pour yielded about 1 finger of vanilla-colored, bubbly foam; this quickly faded down into a thin, but broad lacing with strong retention around the edge. Wonderful nose of tart cherries and raspberries, smokey oak, vanilla, and tanned leather. Light weight, and quite carbonated and lively on the palate - not to the extent of a champaign, but moreso than your standard lager or pilsner. Initially, and I mean VERY initially, there's a sweet kiss of cherries and vanilla. The taste takes a quick turn for the sour, exposing a variety of tart, dark fruit, figs, and smokey wood. Incredibly complex, and hard to pin down each individual flavor. This one goes down quite easy, but also dry. You're left with a modest sweet-tart taste that's reminiscent of over-ripe fruit and smoke.

Overall, very enjoyable. I wish my palate was evolved enough for me to pinpoint all the subtle nuances and tastes within this beer, because it is vastly complex. This one draws you in with welcoming sweet fruits, then akins you to stay with it's warm, toasty oak and leather core. It's sweet, sour, tart, warm, smokey, and earthy all at once, and it works beautifully.

For anyone wondering - not as sour as Sour in the Rye. Probably ~65% in comparison.

The color is dark ruby almost crimson with thick haze and light tan head with fine bead and spots of lace. The smell is great with a mostly tangy fruity not quite citrus with slight tangy cranberry/stone fruit type smell with slight woody accent. The feel is very intense with tangy acidity with light bitter and sour mixture of textures with some astringency and moderate carbonation level with tart quality and mild juicy quality wtih semi-dry finish.

The Taste is great with a tangy juicy almost tart cherry type flavor with oaky tannic element in the mild and some light acidity with a flavor that brings ruby red grapefruit to mind somewhat sour mixed with a slight sweet and mild taste of malt as a minor attribute. The flavor and instensity make for a very unique and high quality take on the style that to me leaves nothing out of place.

A- Pours a deep amber to full brown in color with plenty of red coming through in the light. A small, 1 finger head forms and hangs around a good while. The head leaves a decent amount of lace and is light tan in color.

S- Big tart and cherry like notes hit the nose and almost makes you pucker. The cherry scent ramps up a little in the middle before a touch of oak dryness kicks in. Lingering sour notes hang around on the nose for a good while.

T- The taste of the beer follows the smell pretty closely. Moderate to aggressive tart and sour notes hit the tongue up front and then mellow a little with some cherry notes. Then the dry oak kicks in and dries the tongue out a little bit. The cherries make a comeback a little at the end and the sour lingers in the mouth for awhile after the drink.

M- Like most Belgian inspired wilds/sours, this beer is highly carbonated. The thickness is in the middle of the road, and outside of the level of sourness, it drinks rather easy. The tartness subsides a little as the drink warms, making it smoother and easier drinking as you go.

Overall, this is a pretty good, fairly sour rendition of a Flemish red. The amount of sour is enough to satisfy your needs, but not so much as to overwhelm the flavor. All in all, just a really good sour.

750mL bottle - 2014 edition:

Poured into a tulip glass...this is an outstanding beer. A deep color color, while it produced an off-white head, which was not well retained, it did leave a nice ring throughout the drink. Gave off a nice tart aroma...cherry, perhaps, which was followed up by the taste...I thoughts of Monk's Flemish Red, but a bit more woody. The beer had the right feel, lower carbonation, but extremely easy to drink and very refreshing and satisfying. I would by the beer over and over again, only if it weren't for the price.

2014 version. What a flavor smack on the mouth! Huge tart cherry, but still slick and clean. Really enjoyable. I'm not expert on Flanders Red, but this is my current leader.

2012 vintage poured into a tulip glass

A- pours a deep ruby brown color with a small fizzy off-white head that reduces to a ring around the edge, leaving nothing behind

S- mouth watering balsamic vinegar aroma gives fruity notes of ripe pear, tart cherry, red apple, red grape, earth, toasted oak

T- tart balsamic vinegar pucker up front leads to flavor of wild sour purple grapes, quickly followed by flavors of red apple, pear, sour berry, toasted oak. Puckering finish with more red fruit on the linger

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a bone dry puckering finish

O- this rivals many of the best Belgian example of the style, so many tart fruit flavors that mix so well with the oak barrel
