Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

I am new to sour beers...I have had better...good level of funk with mild to moderate tartness...I would say this beer has a mild sour feel to it...very drinkable

Appearance: Pours a murky dark brown color with a thin rapidly dissipating beige head.

Smell: Tart cherries with a little added lactic punch.

Taste: Tartness hits you right away, with a nice cherry/blackberry underlying flavor. Tartness takes over the finish and continues to build.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, dry on the palate. Low carbonation level with a lingering tartness.

Overall: Very solid sour

The first time I tried Oude Tart my mind was blown. I've since discovered a new world of sour beer, but this one still stands out. It's sour, but balanced, and hits that sour note in the back of your mouth just right.

Pours an almost burgundy color with a very thin cream colored head. Smells very sour with hints of tart cherries, figs, and red wine. A slight hint of wood. The flavor is sensationally balanced. Very sour, but also very sweet. The fruit character comes shining through. I know this will make my tummy hurt.

Pours a deep, almost blood-red, with a half inch head, and no lacing.

Smells like oak, tobacco, leather, red wine, red wine vinegar, and cherries.

This is a really interesting sour, unlike any I've had. It's quite vinous and leathery, with a good amount of oak, some vanilla, a slight smattering of lactic acid sourness. It's far from bracing, though, in the sour department. There's some cherry and grape flavor, some slight caramel and chocolate. What sets this apart from most sours is the depth of malt flavor- it's so interesting and tasty behind the sourness.

This is medium bodied, with a crisp, slightly tart mouthfeel. It has a moderate amount of carbonation, and is really drinkable.

A definite winner from The Bruery.

amazing flanders, really sour right from the get go. Lot of cherry and vinegar as you would expect, but the oak aging tweaks it down leaving you ready for more.

Pours a ruby red hue with a two finger off white head, the smell is leather, oak, funk and cherries, the feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and coats the mouth with morello cherries, funk, oak and finished quite dry and tart and overall what a top drop and take on this style would buy again glad I drank fresh cheers.

750ml bottle into a tulip. 2013 vintage.

Appearance: Pours a murky chestnut color. The head is two fingers high, and khaki in shade. For a sour, the retention is damn near incredible. However, no lacing is left on the glass. (3.75)

Smell: This just smells like a punch in the face. It really has a sour, apple-esque aroma, one that's loaded with massive tartness. But when I focus, I can still pick up some cherry-laden esters and even some caramel malts. The fact that it manages to have an extremely bold sourness yet still seems balanced just impresses the hell out of me. (4.25)

Taste: Oh yeah, this is tart as hell. It opens up with wonderfully biting lactic sourness, which at first fades away to leave a wonderful finishing fruitiness. At first. After a few sips, the cherry-laden fruitiness sadly disappears, leaving just the tartness. It's definitely what I expect from a sour made by The Bruery: the tartness is absolutely wonderful, but it's not really complex. Oh well - as an aforementioned punch in the face, it's quite excellent. (4)

Mouthfeel: Biting and tannic as all get out. And it's also somewhat fizzy to boot. While it's too tart to be really drinkable, I still wouldn't have any trouble sipping on this all day. (3.75)

Overall: Though The Bruery's barrel-aged sugar bombs tend to disappoint my palate, their sours tend to be rock-solid. This is no exception. Once I realized it wasn't the second coming of Rodenbach Grand Cru (and that I wasn't going to get a wonderful hybrid of cherry-laden fruit and subtle tartness), I started to enjoy this for what it is more and more. All told, I'm still impressed with this brew. (4)

On tap:
Pours a dark brown that does show off its "red" only when held up to the light. The I didn't have too much head in this goblet pour, but the edge carbonation build up a decent amount in a light tan foamy ring. Agitation brings back a nice layer if head that quickly recedes to the edges.

Smell is a nice level of sour, lemony in nature, but with some darkness behind it, seemingly a combination of wood (oak? But seem cedar-ish to me even) or raisin/currant, but definitely behind the acetic bite.

Initial sips with a little chill still in the beer were more biting than later ones. Tartness is there, but the lemon flavors mixing more with sour apple and tart cherry that pure citric acid bite. The carbonation is almost perfect, slightly on the light side, to me for this beer. There is a wine-like dryness in the end that could be the wood (or tannins?). The taste does linger a bit, and doesn't change much, which is very nice.

I expected to like this beer, and was not disappointed. Of course its expense makes it a questionable buy, but it's availability might dictate a purchase when available, but would probably want to hold for a good reason to drink.

A - Dirty, ruddy brown. Nice and thick, and surprisingly dark.

S - Sweet and sour, raspberry vinaigrette, raspberries, musty leather, and some more raspberries.

T - Pretty much following the nose. Bracingly tart but not overly so.

M - A real strength of this beer. Super smooth, medium-low carbonation.

O - This is a really well put together beer. It doesn't get much better than this for the style to be honest. It's a toss up between this, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and La Folie.

Poured a copper body with large head that dies quick and leaves minor lace patches down the glass.
The aroma is very acidic as I catch the tartness/acid real quick along with touches of funk and dark fruit.
The beer is sharp and sour, not pungent, but you will get your fill of tartness that can be sour, acidic or like vinegar depending on preference.
Fruit flavors are mild but I do get something akin to sour grapes or black cherry, that along with some oakiness, add some complexity, balance and sweetness to beer so it's not just a sour mess.
Really enjoyable sipping sour that isn't too sour and keeps you coming back for more.

Pours a hazy red brown, little head

Aroma is sharp and big on sour cherry and oak

Very tart. Sour fruit, some oak, with the aftertaste sweetening a bit with dark fruit notes

Mouthfeel is sharp and and light and clean

Overall: what was I waiting for? This beer is every bit as good as the originals from Flanders, and without a doubt the best US version of the style I've encountered. Intensely sour, this isn't a training wheels sour

Served @ 50deg. in Bruery tulip. No bottled on date found.

A - Dark brown with proper red tinting. ~1.5" head when poured aggressively.

S - Cherries, plums, sweet vanilla, sour grapes, hint of oak.

M/T - Nice creamy mouth-feel with a slight tingle from start to finish. Lots of cherry tartness, hints of vanilla and oak.

O - Very good Flanders Red Ale, maybe the best I've had of this style (sorry New Glarus). Sour notes are well balanced with sweet malt, fruit, and oak. I will search out another Oude Tart for the cellar. Prost!

Appearance- Maroon-ish brown, with a foamy tan head that resembles pond scum.

Smell- Prunes, rotten cherries, booze

Taste- Sour cherries, more prunes, leather, kimchi, spoiled milk, bile, slight bitterness

Mouthfeel- Mouth puckering, astringent, well carbonated

Overall- I am not really a fan of most sours. I love the Duchesse de Bourgogne, but that beer has a fair amount of sweetness to it as well and more of a balsamic taste. This Oude Tart tastes extremely sour and I'm sure it would be great if that's all you're into, but it doesn't taste...GOOD. Not something I'd like to drink again.

Poured from a 750ml into a Belgian goblet. 2013 vintage of Oude Tart. Abv on label is 7.5%. Stored correctly in 55% and below.

Pours a deep ruby red, almost ancient rust color, with a 3 inch frothy white head that dissipates faster than Donald Trump's real estate empire. No visible lacing at all which is characteristic of the style.

Smells of lactobacillus, straw or hay, raspberries, sweet malts, and bad decisions.

Tastes of delicious, sour, tart, amazingness! For all you beer lovers, you need to try this beer! Please share with a friend!

Mouthfeel is like a slight prickliness followed by a pleasant sour patch kids aftertaste that lingers on the tongue. I feel like I just got sour patched

Overall I would drink the shit out of this beer! It's super sour and super hard to find. I haven't had the earlier vintages but I imagine they will be amazing as the years come.

Lucky to have scored this for the highest price that I ever paid for a beer at the Bierkoning.
Aroma is leathery, cherry and acetic acid. taste is oaky, fruity and tart. Body is medium with just the right amount of carbonation. Really a very good Flanders Red. I hadn't had this style for a while, but should get it more often. Maybe not this in Amsterdam very obscure variety but rather a more easily available Rodenbach or Duchesse De Bourgogne.

Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL bottle with a bottling date of 7/30/13 faintly etched in on the curve of the neck. Poured into a North Coast tulip glass with an exaggerated flare on the rim.

Appearance - Pours a dark, garnet red that reminds me of a ruby when it's absorbing, rather than reflecting, the light around it. So dark that when not held in front of a light source, it could almost look black, with just a sliver of dark crimson around the countour of the glass. Atop the body sits two fingers of tight light brown foam that shows moderate retention. Eventually recedes to a moderate film on top of the liquid. Lacing is sparse and slick looking.

Smell - Inhaling brings an assault of acidic aromatic profiles, with both acetic and citric joining the fray, but more the former than the latter. Red wine vinegar, oak tannins, and the impressions of preserved black cherries all combine to make this a nicely sour smelling beer.

Taste - The acidic element is still dominant, with acetic acid taking even more of a lead role than it did on the aroma. Again, red wine vinegar and tart black and red currant power through, with a musty note reminiscent of leather and humidor tobacco (but not smoky). As before, the oak imparts a nice woody, tannic quality to the beer, and it almost seems to provide a sense of subtle vanilla to balance the biting acidity.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and high levels of carbonation that provides for a prickly, puckering feel on the tongue.

Overall, just a really well-done Flanders Red. Personally, I prefer my sour beers to pack a pretty good wallop, and this one certainly delivers. Over a full bottle, you get more than enough puckering to really get that electric sour fix. I'd love to try the version with cherries some day, since the base beer seemed to impart notes of cherry to begin with.

Served in a tulip

Deep crimson-mahogany appearance. The liquid was topped by a one-finger tall, tight, frothy, tan colored crown that faded to a lasting, foamy ring. No lacing whatsoever.

Lots of interesting things happening in the nose. Tart and funky. Strong notes of aged balsamic vinegar were present. Super fruity with loads of sweet cherry. Maraschino cherries definitely came to mind. There was a notable brown sugar-like sweetness. Good amount of oakiness from the barrel aging. Fragrant vanilla notes came through strong as well. Really complex and dynamic.

Compared to the nose, the flavor profile was a bit thin. Tart, moderately funky and quite acidic. Slightly metallic. Under ripe raspberries were apparent. Perhaps some cherry and strawberry as well. Vinegar notes came through strong. The vinegar tasted like a cross between balsamic and red wine vinegar. Touch of lactic acid. The finish was oaky, dry and quite tannic. As the beer sat, the flavor profile file intensified and also became more rounded.

The beer was medium bodied. Initially, the liquid seemed a bit thin and fizzy, but the carbonation later settled down. Slick and smooth on the palate. Solid.

Although I definitely preferred the aroma of this beer to the flavor profile, it is an all-around impressive offering and definitely the best domestically produced example of the style.

A: Pours a hazed, dark garnet red color. A dense two finger khaki head rises with excellent retention. Plenty of sticky lace is left behind.
S: Tart and fruity in the nose. Toasted malts with light wood and even a hint of sweetness. Finishes with some tart cherries. Really well incorporated.
T: Tart and fruity again. The tartness gently moves toward acidity but never overwhelming. Acidic, almost tannin like cherries. Toasted malts with a hint of sweetness. Wood and an acidic dry bite lingers. Really nice.
M/D: A medium body that is perfectly effervescent and crisp. There is a bit of sweetness, but finish with a great dry bite. The acidity takes over a little, but overall a great Flanders to sip on.

The Bruery is best when they stick to basic. but unique styles IMO. This is a perfect example. This and the regular saisons have always been my personal favorites from their lineup. Really well made that does not try to be over the top, just because they can be. Highly recommended.

Opaque brown-red, pours with a decent relatively long lived head. Sour cherry and oak aroma. One of the more sour sours. Toasted oak and sour fruit. Dry and full bodied. Preceded this with La Folie, which I found to be less complex, less sour and less full bodied.

Appearance - Deep red. No head. No collar.

Smell - Bright acidity. Acetic. Oak. Caramel malt and some cherry-like fruitiness.

Taste - Strong sourness. A little acetic, but not overwhelming. Caramel malt. Less oak. Cherry fruits linger in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Very clean. Not too heavy, but it's malty.

Overall - This is very good for an American representation. Malty, but a nice sourness to balance it.
