Notes/Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Hazy reddish-amber body with a finger of slightly off-white head atop. The head settles to a crown, leaving only a small film on top. The nose is sharp and cherry-like, light acetic acid backed by a subtle dark malt foundation. The ripe cherry aroma is pretty awesome. It tastes toasty and sour, balsamic vinegar-like acetic acid at a perfect level. Cherry-like esters are prominent on the palate, though there's not much sweetness; it's a dry, woody and tannic beer, especially in the finish. This exceeded my expectations, one of the better American interpretations of this style.

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

Glad to be finally trying this stuff, especially considering my man Ryan has been lauding it forever. It pours a clear garnet (roby tones...?) topped by a finger of khaki foam. The nose comprises tart cherry, red wine vinegar, mild oak, light graham cracker, and a bit of sour blue raspberry. The taste brings in more of the same, the tartness in full form for most of the show, though a vein of very mild molasses seems to enter stage left near the finish and stays through the encore, mellowing things slightly and dancing provocatively with the graham cracker and oak. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a damn fine sour, not quite what I would think of when "Flanders Red" is spoken, but a thoroughly enjoyable American take on the classic style. Good times.

Served around 50º as recommended by the bottle.
Full pour into a Duvel tulip, it generates 2 fingers of light tan foam, the color of foam padding yellowed with age. The head is dense, and lasts about 5 minutes. Random spotty lacing. Hazy reddish chestnut color.

Softly acetic nose, hints at wet barrel staves and some mineral notes. Dark berries... currant, blackberry, tart black cherry flavors, some yogurty lactic character. Full and savory, stimulates the salivary glands like none other. Very nice aftertaste of woody cinnamon spice and oak dryness. Cherry pits and dry fall leaves.

Enjoying this very much, but still have to give top honors to my faves Haandbakk and Oerbier Reserva. Makes a nice pairing with a washed rind cheese.

750ml bottle, 2013 edition - I missed out on this at GABF last year (don't save the Bruery table for near the end of the session, a helpful hint), so it's nice to see it arrive here in Alberta now.

This beer pours a mostly clear, dark ruddy amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, thinly foamy, and fizzy beige head, which leaves just a wee bit of lingering sea-spray lace around the glass as it quickly dissolves into non-being.

It smells of sour, dark fruit - raspberries, cherries, and red grapes - woody caramel and vanilla, turbinado sugar, gritty pale malt, cooking vinegar, and a musty, lightly funky yeastiness. The taste is rather tart and acerbic red wine vinegar, perhaps a bit more complex via the additional cherry, black currant, and raspberry notes, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, thin dark sugar, barely sweet pale malt, subtly toasted woody caramel, well-aged leather, and a softly yeasty fruit wine booziness.

The carbonation is moderate, and yet sturdy enough to take on the swirling acidity, the body medium-light in weight, and more smooth than I might have initially imagined. It finishes off-dry, the lineage of the bracing sourness still resonating, though tempered somewhat by a blend of sugar, malt, and wood.

A genuinely balanced, but still big and saucy sour red ale, the well-rounded fruity tartness let out to play, but not at the cost of an overwrought palate pillaging. The wood treatment is complex, understated, and just about right. Quite an apt representation for the style, but all other things are not equal with this offering - the serving size and sticker price cannot compete with those venerable in-class imports, I'm afraid.

one of the better examples of the style from the united states, I have no idea how ive not had it do date. well, yes I do, its over 20 bucks a bottle, and therefore prohibitively expensive, but its the holidays so what the heck. the color is a murky dark red, darker than raspberry jam, lighter than traditional brick red, with one nice inch of white bubbly head on it. it smells of fresh and dried red fruit, from cranberries with their tartness to cherries with their sweetness, even prunes or raisins with their wrinkly gumminess. its lovely all the way through, with a ton of acid making my mouth water for a taste. the flavor is great too, all the fruit into one really sour brew. its got that classic flanders front of tongue acidity, almost too much, and this is a bottle to share for that reason. it puckers me right up, demanding perseverance from my taste buds. long dry finish, didn't think that was possible until this beer. the fruit is nice, the red malt is bigger, and the ph has to be real low. well carbonated body makes it fizzle and snap in my mouth, and the acidity prevents major drinkability. I am intrigued enough by this beer to drink a lot of it, and its quite enjoyable, but at this price their are other serviceable options to get my flanders fix. top quality as always from the bruery.

A - Pours with one finger of light brown foam on top of a black body with clear amber highlights.

S - An aroma of cherries, vanilla, toasted oak, and subtle roast.

T - Tart cherry and caramel up front with more dark sugar in the middle. Finishes with funk, stone fruit, and a touch of smoky vanilla.

M - Moderately thick body, average carbonation, and a slightly dry finish.

D - The aroma is excellent and the flavor profile isn't far behind.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a deep dark ruby, with 2-3 foamy fingers of light tan head. This eventually retains with more of a thin look, with some creamy bunching around the edges that leaves a nice looking frothy cascade of lacing behind. Cherries are fresh, vibrant, and tart in the nose, being wrapped up in smooth notes of oaky vanilla and sweet bready tones. There is a bit of light earthy funk coming out as well but it seems to be tannic in nature than anything.

Fruit and tartness pretty much controls the bulk of the taste, with a nice balancing sugary doughy feel and a flush of vanilla that meshes well with the stickier sweet aspects of this. There is a touch of lactose and vinegar present but it is mostly kept to a minimum, with this staying mostly tart. Woody tannins hang on the edges of the profile, leaving a steady and deep earthy dryness across the palate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slick easy creaminess that keeps this pretty mellow feeling on the tongue despite the relative sharp tartness of this. Not much alcohol felt here at all either, with the overall richness and slickness of the body helping keep it at bay.

This was a very solid take on an Oude Bruin, being well balanced with the wood character and achieving just the right amount of pucker in the mouth. I really enjoyed this bottle.

A - Two fingers of tan carbonation that dissipates quickly to a thin ring and then to nothing. A Hazy reddish blood-orange color body.

S - Woody and oaky vanilla, acetic acid, sour cherries, a bit of leather, some unconcealed booze.

T - I like the taste better - there's some nice pale malt backbone that helps balance the lactic sourness, acetic acid, tart cherries, and tannic elements. Sweeter than the Red Poppy that I had side-by-side.

M - Tingly, medium body, that is sufficiently big for the 7.5% ABV. Starts sticky but finishes dry. Style appropriate.

D - Very enjoyable. It gets a touch acetic and vinegary by the end of a glass, but I could probably have the bottle on my own. Looking forward to more sour brews from the Bruery.

Light fizzy head, slight yeast chunks at the bottom, dark murky molasses brown ruby colored beer with touch of light coming through.

Nose great, tart fruit, sour malt, bit lambic like tartness, light acidity, hint of dark malts, light raisin, bit of tart cherry, great tart fruit, hint of vanilla oak.

Taste starts nice and tart, soured malt, light wild funk and acidity, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, like sour candy, whisky sour cherry, light earthy nutty like malts, light sweetness, little syrupy, hint of vanilla and oak. Long tart finish, dry bready malts and earthy light funk, light tart cherry. Sticky syrupy as well.

Mouth is med bodied, bit heavier, lighter carb, syrupy, flemmy.

Overall great, delicious, great tart fruit, sour malt, light bready dry malts and funk, bit sticky and syrupy.

The Bruery Oude Tart Flemish Style Red Ale Aged in Oak Barrels.

Deep burgundy hue, dark red, with a slim, soon-gone head.

Aroma speaks up form the first minute, spilling out sour fruit, matched with sweetness, a beautiful blend. Just a touch of vinegar, a magnificent marriage of sweet and sour.

Taste: Bam! boom! Mmmm. A great flash of sourness, an intense puckeration that outreaches many other sour red ales. And the vinegar rises up, as well. Big, fresh, intense, and amazing.

This one is just about a match for Rodenbach or any of the better Belgian Flemish reds. Not a damn thing wrong with it. In fact, I love it. Mmmm, mmm, good.

I had this beer twice in about a week. Both times out of a bottle, both times were amazing. Last night at the Bruery dinner at Brasserie Beck it was served in a wine glass.

Beer is brown and cloudy and forms a thin brownish head of small and tiny bubbles that leaves a little lacing on the glass. I don't know what the carbonation level is but it looks great.

Aroma is sour and sweet. Woodsy with a hint of funk. Its not as strong smelling say as a 50 year old Goudenband but it smells great.

Light in body and pretty carbonated on the mouth. Good palate cleansing beer overall. Forward mild sweetness and back a nice tartness. Moderate acetic character with a brightness to it. Some citric and lactic character as well. One of the best bruins out there.

Poured from a bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a murky reddish brown with a half finger of off white head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Fruity vinegar with a strong oak presence. Some mildly sweet malt with a tart cherry note.

Taste: Malty but not very sweet. I'm getting the cherries, so tart that I'm almost getting raspberry. Some vinegar sourness with oak and a bitter, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with large bubbles and a slick finish. I feel like the finish should be dry.

Overall: I think this is a well done beer. They didn't go over the top with anything. I would have liked a dry finish.

First had: on tap at Coffee District, Delray Beach, FL

I'm not one to hump Bruery beers; many of the ones I've had have been lousy. But this one was not too bad. I'm glad I got to try it on tap so I can save my bottle for another time.

Hazy reddish-brown pour into a goblet, capped off with a good inch of foamy eggshell head that retained and laced well. Cherry and apple in the nose, notes of caramel and vanilla, lesser hints of leather and citric and acetic acid. Decent balance of sweet and tart in the taste, cherry, apple, lemon, plum, a good malty base keeping everything in check, some leathery tannins, and some woody dryness. A little bit of souring vinegar, but nothing too puckering. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Overall pretty nice, and from the Bruery, one of the few that hasn't let me down.

A cloudy amber brown with some pink highlights. Nice enough foam and plenty of lacing in the wine glass. Modest foam but sudsy on the tongue. Really tart.

Vinegar aroma with a touch of fruit in the nose. The first sip has an appealing hint of sour cherries. Scratchy bitterness fills the rest of the taste. Authentic apparently to the style. Pleasant tangy and spritzy mouthfeel. You could say this is actually close to drinkable.

On tap at Bottleworks in San Diego.

From 01/22/11 notes. Brought to a local tasting.

a - Pours a mahogany brown color with some reddish tint. One inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of sour fruits, most noticeably tart cherries, oak, acidic notes, fruity malts, some funky yeast. Smells awesome.

t - Tastes of sour cherries and other fruit, oak, fruity malts, some vanilla, and some funk. Again, very enjoyable.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very smooth body, quite easy to drink.

d - I thought this was an awesome flanders; probably the best I've ever had. This is the second best Bruery beer I've had too, only behind Black Tuesday. Would love to get another bottle of this one.

The beer pours a hazy red-amber color with a tan head. The aroma is tart cherries with some oak, vanilla and brown sugar. The flavor is tart cherries with some oak. Very drinkable and very dry. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
