Flanders Red Ale |  7.50% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

A- Pretty standard flemish color, dark brown and ruby tones.

S- Tart dark fruits and oak.

T- High on the sour meter, sour and carbonated at the front, then the sweeter, fruitier flavors come through with a good amount of woody oak. Finishes with a great oaky and very subtle vanilla aftertaste. This beer should make you pucker some.

M- Carbonation dissipates moderately fast, mouth feel is more watery.

O- Outstanding Flemish sour, not too sweet, oak did seem to dominate my palate as I got to the end of the bottle, but you can definitely pick out the complexity of each layer of flavors. If there weren't so many more beers out there to try and I had a lot more money I would buy 2 or 3 more. You can't go wrong with a sour from The Bruery.

Oude tart

Pours a rich mahogany color with a fizzy, short lived white head. Aroma is huge of new leather, sour lemons, dark fruit, smoke and oak.

In the taste, tart acetic sourness with the strong sweet and sour style of traditional ales of the Flemish region. For an American brewed Oude Bruin or Flanders Red, this is exceptional.

Tip of the tongue tartness with the swollow being more mellow and open, oak and a small sourness lasting into the finish.

A deep copper beer with good and a few sea monkeys (aka floaters). The head is very long lasting composed of compact, tan bubbles that leave a fine lacing on the glass.

Moderately strong aroma of current, a moderately-light tartness and some leathery, barnyard funk. A low, carmel malt sweetness and moderate dark fruit esters.

A sweet-tart flavor that is far more tart than sweet. There is a a lot of red current flavor along with some dark fruit and caramel malt for flavor. A light oak flavor and touch of leather with only a light sweetness the balance is strongly tart. The finish is medium with fruit flavor after taste.

A medium to medium-full bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation. There is a bit of carbonic bite.

Some of the class Flanders Red flavors of red currents with a sweet-tart balance and low carmel in a supporting malt body. I like that this one is fairly strongly tilted towards the tart and lightly sweet making it an immensely food friendly.

Thanks to Chico for sharing this bottle. I think I have had this a few times but never reviewed it. I may have even taken notes once and forgot about them. Either way, pumped to have a great beer again. 2013 bottle.

A- Murky dark red, brown pour from the 750ml bottle to three glasses. A small off-white head forms but is just a small foam that dies down to nothing after just a bit of time. Lacing seemingly not gonna happen for me but not uncommon for this style.

S- Sourness from the bugs combines with other yeasty fruity flavors to give me a big whiff of tart cherry and currants. Some underlying malts, slight acetic and lemony lactic acid.

T- Fruits and sours lead things off here with cherry, curant, lemon, orange and vinous grape notes. Some diacetyl in the backdrop with fresh oak tannins, sherry notes and slight vinegar sourness, mostly lactic to me.

MF- Fairly light bodied but it has a smooth and somewhat frothy foamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high as it finishes with a fairly puckering sourness towards the end of the glass. Dry.

Perhaps one of the best of only a few American Flanders Red Ales I have had. Authentic tartness with that slight vinegar and diacetyl that I find in beers like Rodenbach and Duchesse.
