Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

750ml bottle poured into tulip 25/1/14

A hazed maroon liquid, two fingers of noisy tan foam hangs on for a few sips leaving no lace

S brown sugar, lots of cherry and raspberries, faint vanilla, some wood, vinegar, vinous notes are strong, smells like candy and I love it

T not quite everything the nose had going on but still very tasty, the fruit blends together and a little sour compared to nose, more wood and brown sugar, vinegars still there no booze anywhere

M medium bodied with soft carbonation, not overly sour, a little slick on the palate, no complaints in this department

O solid example of the style, nice mix of sweet and sour, sour but far from turning my mouth inside out, booze is completely hidden

tough sell with cheap bottles of Rodenbach on the same shelf but solid beer from start to finish and I can easily recommend it

This beer is the first sour that I've tried. The only description that I can utter is: WOW! The depth of flavors and the complexity on the palate is extraordinary. Having had no experience with sours, much less Flanders Reds, made this one amazing beer to taste. A must have.

At the pour, a large creamy brownish white head emerges. The frothy substance screams and tries to pull its tainted brown self out and over the rim of your glass. Before you can realize its daring escape, it recants quickly back into the depths of the beer until there is no head at all.

Like an oak barrel bound with leather. Hints of plum, balsamic vinegar, tart cherries, and other dark fruit

The taste is astoundingly in sync with the smell. It also holds a sharp acidic tartness that is very easy drinking considering the style.

Light and thin awakening the mouth with tart sensations that light up all the sensors in your tongue.

A very good representation of the Flanders Red Ale Style. As complex as this style can be I think it is hard to find one that can be well balanced and easy drinking. Look no further because this is it.

750ml bottle bought over by Doug during our cellar cleaning tasting. Poured into a Surly goblet today, 1/22/2014.

App- A hazy brownish-ruby red body, 1 finger tan head, fine retention, not much lacing

Smell- Vinegar, acidity, a bit of oak, a bit of cherry tartness, cane sugar

Flavour- Very acidic, sourness 7/10, bit of oak, non-descript fruit tartness, some sweet malts, helps cut the acidity a bit

Mouthfeel- A bit thin but not watery. Carbonation is a bit low. Aftertaste is sweet acidity, very nice. Dangerously drinkable.

Overall- Good Flanders red. Enjoyed this better than most others I've had. Duchesse is tastier with this being less complex but just as enjoyable. Price point is always an issue but I won't beat the dead horse.

Bottle from the summer of 2012. Served a bit too cold in a very large wine glass.

Classic reddish brown color with a moderate amount of dark beige head, looks good in the glass and certainly looks like a Flanders Red.

Smells like malt, some mildly sharp vinegar, some oak, red wine, and brown sugar. It all comes together really well, especially as it warms a bit in the glass; greater than the sum of its parts.

Tastes excellent, drier and more sour than most Flanders Reds, excellent blend of lactic and sharp acetic tartness, with underlying dry malt and barrel flavors and an impression of salt and perhaps other minerals. Lingering salinity and tingly acidity.

Medium bodied, smooth creamy bubbles, highly drinkable.

Glad to finally try this slightly aged; it's drinking well.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2012 vintage bottling. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a small fairly dense light khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big ripe sour cherry, cranberry, raisin, prune, red grape, oak, vinegar, leather, clove, toast, brown sugar, light vanilla, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast and oak notes with a great malt/acidic balance; and great strength. Taste of big ripe sour cherry, cranberry, raisin, prune, red grape, vanilla, oak, vinegar, toast, clove, brown sugar, leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice amount of acidic sourness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, cranberry, red grape, raisin, prune, vanilla, oak, clove, brown sugar, vinegar, leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity of sour fruity/funky yeast and oak flavors; with a great balance of malt/acidity and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and nicely acidic/crisp mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible Flanders red ale style! All around fantastic complexity and balance of sour fruity/funky yeast and oak barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on with the great malt/acidity balance. An extremely amazing offering.

A-Deep reddish brown, murky in the glass. No head retention at all, despite ample carbonation.

S-Oak dominates right off, followed by sour cherries and a wine like sourness. I don't get any
malt/grain in this bouquet. Mainly oak woodiness.

T-Tart cherry, red grape juice and tangy sour apple. There's that oak again, dominant and lingering. Tough to pick out much else when the wood component is so strong.

M-A strong puckering sourness. Full carbonation, with medium body. Certainly not an expert on sours, but body seems proper for this beer. Malt backbone non-existent.

O-Years ago, I cut up hundreds of oak pallets for firewood, and the odor and sawdust taste left
an unpleasant impression on me. I have yet to sample a brew aged in oak that I truly relish.
Some, as this particular one, I enjoy, but that wood aspect always takes away from the experience. That said, this is a fine beer, and would perhaps benefit from a bit of aging to
my taste. A bit more malt balance would help too.

Got this one at Hill Farmstead. 2013 vintage. From notes.

A - Deep red colour, Good carbonation leading to a head that fizzed away very fast. Never left any lace or retention.

S - Tart cherry, sweet fruit juice, a little woody, dark fruit.

T - Nice tart cherry with sweet fruits there too. Lot's of acidity to finish with a complimentary woody note and some sugar.

M - Strong carbonation, light body, tart finish.

O/D - A well made Flemmish Red. A step below Rodenbach vintages, but definitely showing similar qualities. Tasty and easy to drink. Worthy of the hype and price tag.

one of the better examples of the style from the united states, I have no idea how ive not had it do date. well, yes I do, its over 20 bucks a bottle, and therefore prohibitively expensive, but its the holidays so what the heck. the color is a murky dark red, darker than raspberry jam, lighter than traditional brick red, with one nice inch of white bubbly head on it. it smells of fresh and dried red fruit, from cranberries with their tartness to cherries with their sweetness, even prunes or raisins with their wrinkly gumminess. its lovely all the way through, with a ton of acid making my mouth water for a taste. the flavor is great too, all the fruit into one really sour brew. its got that classic flanders front of tongue acidity, almost too much, and this is a bottle to share for that reason. it puckers me right up, demanding perseverance from my taste buds. long dry finish, didn't think that was possible until this beer. the fruit is nice, the red malt is bigger, and the ph has to be real low. well carbonated body makes it fizzle and snap in my mouth, and the acidity prevents major drinkability. I am intrigued enough by this beer to drink a lot of it, and its quite enjoyable, but at this price their are other serviceable options to get my flanders fix. top quality as always from the bruery.

poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

Pours a murky dark reddish brown with a thick, 2 fingers tall, tightly bubbled tan head that quickly dies down to a mere puck leaving the no lacing behind in it's wake.

Aroma: (4.25)
Tart cherries immediately leap out of the glass towards your nose with accompanying notes of under ripe plum and faint raspberries. Encasing these tart aromatics is a robust, but integrated layer of brettamyces; mostly rustic, worn leather and musty, damp hay. Bringing some balance is a nice background of sweet caramel and bready malt, as well as some toasty vanilla oak character.

Taste: (3.75)
Wow, much more sour than what you'd expect judging from the nose; As soon as the beer touches your tongue, a crushing, mouth watering flood of acidity assaults your palate; predominately waves of lemon juice as well tart cherries. Layered neatly underneath the acidity is some light barnyard funk that resides on your palate up until the tart dry finish. As the beer finishes, only a mere kiss of bready malt tries to cushion the acidity, but is quickly overwhelmed. Left on your palate are long, lingering notes of lemon flesh, cherries, damp earth, light breads and subtle vanilla from the oak barrels.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Overall: (3.75)
This is a more than a decent sour red, but it lacks the sweet, bready malt backbone that really differentiates the "Flemish Red" style from the rest of the sour styles. Judging on taste alone, this is a very solid and aggressive, albeit not the most complex sour that I've had. I'd definitely recommend this beer to only the most devout sour fans. Despite what the name says, this is definitely more than just merely "tart".

750ml bottle poured into a snifter. 2013 edition. Bottled 07/31/13.

A: Pours a cloudy dark brown appearing almost black in the glass with a slightly tanned head. Head is fairly quick to dissipate till the point of no head left at all. Not really any lacing.

S: Very pleasant aroma on this one. Cherry as well as other dark fruits with an excellent tart twist. Touch of oak character as well. Vinegar aspect is subdued. Focus is really on the cherry and sour aspects.

T: Right off the bat you can feel the tartness dwelling in your mouth before you even swallow. As soon as you do a flood of cherry hits your tongue adding sweetness to the sour. Oak is in there adding some mellow characteristics. Alcohol is lost in the flavor.

M: Medium to full body with loads of carbonation. Dry and very crisp finish. Nice creamy aspect which is unique. Obviously a puckering beer. Warming to remind you there is booze in here.

Overall can easily understand why this is such a highly revered beer. Really shines in the cherry and sour departments. Paired with some vanilla bean ice cream is delicious.

Appearance- Pours up an okay amount of head which has some retention. The head is a medium beige while the body is a hazy but dark maroon that has chestnut notes which appears as a muddy and dark amber when held up to the light. No lacing at the moment. Small spots of lacing later.

Nose- Pretty typical for a Flanders Red Ale. Lots of tart cherry and not much else. Some acetic acid from the glass. The acetic acid is really strong from the bottle. Some hints of strawberry as the tart cherry of the glass fades quickly. Swirling adds nothing.

Taste- Reflective of the nose but far richer and more complex. Huge tart cherries with light acetic acid notes. Very fleshy cherry that starts to suggest leather. Heavy stone fruit such that even peach and apricot are expressed. Light notes of toast in the background but I don't really get any of the oak. Expresses tartness but the sour aspects mellow as the flavor profile progresses. A bit of dryness on the finish. Slight notes of oak start to appear but fortunately, they are slight. A very good and solid beer but seems, at the present, to be lesser than Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge or Rodenbach Cru. This is definitely a negative as all of these beers are cheaper. Acetic acid does grow but is well rounded and quite pleasant. Really good beer but not great. Slight bit of straw appears and makes the flavor profile a little more interesting.

Mouthfeel- A little more than medium bodied with ample carbonation (fits the style well) and light syrup to the texture. Somewhat dry finish matches well with the slight straw.

Drinkability- Fairly easygoing for a “sour” beer. What isn't easygoing is the price- 21 bucks is way too much when comparable or better beers go for much less. Probably won't buy again.

Overall- Really good beer and a solid representation of the style. Definitely worth at try but if you're worried about your wallet, grab one of the aforementioned Flemish Reds. You won't miss much other than a tick.

S - tons of sour slight vinegar notes, black cherries and sweet sugary dates.

M - lighter bodied, decent carb. Quite drinkable and refreshing

750 mL bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, bottled 8//13 (2013 vintage), poured into my Weyerbacher Tulip glass per their request, drank 11/28/13 over an hour.

A: 3/3 - ruby red-to-dark brown coloration, little clarity (cannot see through), tannish-brown head on first pour and persists as a creamy 1/2 finger head throughout drinking , highly carbonated with bubbles pouring off the bottom of the glass; moderate alcohol legs

S: 9/12 - subtle vinegar and barnyard qualities, not picking up on much of the oak-barrel qualities

T: 16/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's an immediate sourness - vinegar, cherries and stone fruit; in the middle of the mouth, some of the vinous qualities come through with some background malts and alcohol and some oak qualities peeking out; minimal alcohol flavors; little-to-no aftertaste

M: 4/5 - moderately bodied and high carbonated

O: 8/10 - nice oude bruin but not as complex or oak-aged as I was hoping for; it's an expensive beer but still worth a try

2013 bottle, this is my 3rd time having this I believe. Updated from a 4.5 'Had' rating.

A - Murky maroon with some orange highlights and a tan head. A thin ring and some spots of a cap remain by the end. Some flecks sit at the bottom.

S - Pretty sour with lots of lemon and dark fruit (cherries mostly) front and center. Lots of oak too with some vanilla and caramel as well.

T - Some more earthy funk and vinous tones showing up here, the main focus remains straight up puckering lemony tartness. Sour cherries prevalent as well but light on the 'dark fruit' end of the spectrum, considering the style. Nice vinegar, buttery oak barrel, and light vanilla sweetness.

M - Somewhat big feeling and smooth with medium carbonation. Sourness forces you to sip and savor.

O - Intense sourness overpowers most of the semblance of your typical Flanders, maybe would've liked it more balanced overall but still quite good.

on draft at beer study in chapel hill. into a snifter.

pours a murky brown with a half inch head. smell is of tart cherries..as expected. taste is very much the same as the nose, tart cherries and not much else. good..though not superb. medium bodied, mild carbonation.

overall pretty good, but not too memorable .

Poured at the tasting room. Brownish red pour, mostly clear, with a small white head that recedes quickly. Big time sour vinegar aroma, stronger than any other sour I have had. Maybe some light sweet apples and cherries as well. Flavor follows with a massive hit of sour, some light funky vinegar, and a bit of sour fruits. There is a big dry oak influence here that differentiates this from others I have had in the style. Light sweet malts remain on the palate. This was heavier than the Berazzled, and definitely hit the taste buds hard. Enjoyable.

A-Pours red. A dark, dried red. Nearly brown but definitely red. Think bubbly head leaves freckles of lace.

S-Tartness, caramel, darker fruits. Sour cherry. Hints of oak. It's tart but also has a pleasing base behind the oak and souring treatment.

T-The flavor is much livelier than the nose. I enjoyed the nose but the flavor mimics it and trumps it. The sourness is stronger and more sprightly. The caramel malty sweetness sneaks in behind the blast of tartness. Caramel dipped sour cherries with a tiny hint of chocolate. Malt vinegar and wood.

M-Medium bodied. Tiny, tickling bubbles. Lingering sourness on my lips.

O/D-Another expensive Bruery beer I initially regret buying and am subsequently satisfied after imbibing.

Appearance: dark red, a little hazy. Not opaque but pretty darn dark. Healthy strawberry blonde head and lacing.
Smell: all the characteristics of a Flanders red. Tart, sour, fruity. A little restrained funk.
Taste: much like the nose with more intense tart, sour characteristics. Finish is funky.
Overall: still learning my way around the sours. This delivers for sure.

Cracked this bottles with a surprisingly forceful psssh of pressure being released. Poured into a tulip glass, it pours with a dark maroon color and a barely there head. Large carbonation bubbles can be seen emanating up through the glass.

The first whiff smells of tart berries, leather, dried tobacco leaves, and a slight red wine vinous quality.

Taste is exactly as the nose leads. A big burst of tartness, followed by the dried fruit (think plums or figs), then a bit of leather, followed by a finish that brings the sour back in and then fades to a tobacco finish. Cold to Warm, the flavors never change. Some drying oak on the back end that merges into the dry mouthfeel.

Slightly over carbonated in my opinion, I think the carbonation almost seems to mute the leather and tobacco, and as the carb is swirled out, those flavors come forward.

Once again, another Bruery offering that I just don’t understand. 20 bucks for a bottle that doesn’t provide complexity as it warms, staying the same few flavors the entire way. I think its more of a 10 dollar bottle, not a 20. A decent beer for a sour fix, but not when its costing you 20 bucks. Grab a Rodenbach Grand Cru for half the price instead.

The beer comes in a hazy dark copper color.

The aroma is extremely tart and sour, with a good amount of oak and dark fruit, raisin, cherries sweetness. There's also that vinegar sourness.

The flavor follows with a bit of fruity sweetness in the front, and then it just attacks you with a vinegary tartness that really puckers your mouth. along with fruity cherry and grape sourness. One of the more sour beers I have had. There's a bit of oak that dries the beer.

This is really an exceptional sour. I really love how complex and sour it is.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip. I believe this is from 2012, but the bottle is not dated.

Appearance: Pours a uniform opaque brown/black with a defined reddish hue. A half finger of light brown head fades quickly to nothing.

Smell: Cherry and oak upfront. Light acidity, grassy funk, lemon, green apples. An interesting leathery component to it as well which picks up as this one warms.

Taste: Red grapes, cherry, lemon, citrus rinds, green apple, oak, that leather quality again. Quite tart finish - very sour.

Mouth-feel: Low carbonation with a medium, very dry body. Super dry, sour finish.

Overall: Wow, this one was a lot more sour than I was expecting. Definitely the most sour of its style for me. Nice cherry and sour flavors in there, but just a tad sour for me - would prefer it if it were a bit more balanced. Still a quality brew of the style and quite tasty. I am wondering if this might be a bit older than my 2012 estimate from the carbonation and flavor profile.

Rodenbach defines this style like no other beer defines any style and it does so at a price that simply is unmatched. To say the least Oude Tart has brutal competition.

Pours a dark hazyed brown body, a good 2 inches of foam that hold long enough for a sour, but certainly aren't retained forever.

The nose gives off vinegar, fruits, and funk.

Oude Tart seems to take the flander's style and it mixes in a bit of murky flavors with the classic vinegar, cranberry/cherry elements. The end result is deep, full, and robust, but very satisfying beer.

These kinds of beers tend to burn a bit going down and Olde Tart is no exception. The beer is a pleasure to drink, but slower is better.

I hate reviewing these beers as it's hard to explain why one is better than another. This is an great example of the style that falls into the intense and strong side. It isn't going to top the kind and it's priced at nearly twice the price, but I'm digging it, BIG time.

A- Pours a muddy brown, slightly cherry body with a fizzy white head that reduces very quickly and leaves no lacing or retention.

S- I get a lot of musty funkyness, sour grapes, leather, sour cherries, basement, and a distinct woddyness which is characteristic of barrel aged sours.

T- Starts off with a big acidic punch of sourness - lemon juice, vinegar, acetic acid, sour cherries and white wine. Immediately following is a musty, leathery, old flavor. The finish shows notes of wood and maybe some caramel.

M- Medium-light body, especially for 7.5% abv. The sourness makes it mildly easy to drink. Quite refreshing.

Overall a very nice Flanders ale. Very, very similar (I don't think I could tell the difference to be honest) to some of the better known American Wild Ales like Russian River's supplication and consecration.

This beer was served on tap at One-Eyed Betty’s in Ferndale, Michigan. It arrived in a generic stemmed tulip, glowing a rich mahogany coloring, letting up shimmering shades of ruby towards the bottom of the glass. It held a one finger head of almond colored bubbles, showing okay retention, and leaving wet sheeted lacing dripping around the glass, with no notable trace of it after only a few seconds. A chill haze was present, but no sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared to be active. The aroma gave huge sweet, bright, and funky tartness, with a wild blend of cranberry, blackberry, and concord grape skin fruity sourness, black shoe polish, cardboard, foamy plastics, moss and musk, oaked French red wine, amber and chocolate malts, air vanilla creaminess, and soft banana esters. With warmth came the lightest herbal, earthy hop oils and lipstick waxiness. Our first impression was that it was just as sour and fruity as expected, but with insanely smooth sip and approachability. As we sipped, the taste blossomed with zinging lemon and soured choke cherry, fresh oaky warmth, soured red wine bite, pseudo funky yeastiness, brown sugar, thickly toasted amber malts, and barnyard funky sourness, nearing the levels of your typical American wild. The middle came to a peak with heavy musk and dust, funky oaky woodiness, sour citrus, apple cider vinegar, amber and European pales and crystals, brown candied sugars, cherry flesh and bite, soft leathers, and a curious tobacco smoked maltiness. The end blended and washed simple with sugary white candies, purple grape fruitiness, arugula and bitter field greens, tin, chalky yeast, dripping wet lemon juice and rind, funky yeast puck, vitamin chalkiness, and amber and mildly chocolatey malts. The aftertaste breathed of faint chocolate malt depth, black cherry puck, amber metallics, grassy funk, cakey yeast, light cinnamon and allspice twang, phenolic medicinals and clove, tin, green grass resins, bone dry oakiness, light booze, nail polish remover, and sour lemon candies. The body was medium, and the carbonation was high. Every sip showed beautiful slurp, smack, cream, froth, fizz, pop, glug, and gurgle. The mouth was left cooled and wetly coated, with quick pucker and astringency, but no real chalky dryness or boozy pull. The abv was appropriate, and drinkability was insanely high.

Overall, it was tough to decide what we enjoyed most about this brew, as it was a tossup between its nose, its flavoring, and its soft, fluffy feel. From the first whiff you get an idea of just how high quality and well thought out this beer is. The aroma is subtle and nuanced, but yet still knocks you to the ground with its bright sourness of fruit, wood, dangerously deep grain, and yeasty funk. The flavoring follows as best as anything could, with the same interplay of wild depth, generous fruit and tartness, and inlaid woody warmth. The flavors are sweet, but effectively tart, with the final blend striking an amazingly easy sipping balance that defies warmth and environment. This is helped along by the mouthfeel that affords high carbonation and nice prickle, appropriate to the level of pucker, but also gives big frothy creaminess on the swirl around the mouth, helping to add buoyancy and body to the diving deepness of the flavor profile. This is an incredible beer for the style, and for the brewery’s sour/tart lineup, and if you are a fan of either, then this is a must-have.
