Oude Tart is a Flemish-Style Red Ale aged in red wine barrels for up to 18 months. This version has had cherries added for the final stages of barrel aging. It's pleasantly sour with hints of leather, tangy dark fruit, plump cherries and toasty oak. While the base beer is one of the more classic styles that we make, it's not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French border, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. We're doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the West Coast.

Bottled 02/1/16 and consumed early August 2021. Pinnacle of the style in this country. Beautifully improved with cherries. A properly barrel aged sour with tons of character.

Appearance -The beer poured a maroon red color with a white head.

Smell - In plain form, this smelled like a Flanders ale. It had dry oak, but cherry notes were present as well.

Taste - The profile was tart. Acidity has not enamel stripping. I definitely got cherry skin but it turns into rich cherry jam as it warms. Per the style, it had a nice dry finish that left me wanting more.

Mouthfeel - There was viscosity is the feel. The dry stuck to the tongue and roof of the mouth.

Overall - The beer was near perfect for the style.

Splitting a bomber of this with my best friend Passow, who is visiting from northern California. I got a bomber of this in April 2016 when I went to southern California to visit my sister and her husband in Orange County, CA. Poured from the 750 ml bomber into a tulip glass, this beer is a medium to dark brown color with deep amber/ruby highlights when held up to the light. Not really a head here, but a thin to medium sized ring lining the inside of the glass with a few small spots of foam on the surface. Aromas of tart cherry and sour, musty oak funk. The taste is pretty much the same. Simple and straight to the point with the tart cherry and sour, musty oak funk notes with just a very slight hint of salt too. Not really any other flavors going on here, but that works great here. Just a fantastic flavor profile. Has a slightly oily, slightly vinegary, slightly prickly, medium bodied mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. The flavors really linger nicely on my palate for a long time after each sip. WOW! What more is there to say. A phenomenal beer all around here for this style.
