Style | ABV
American Wild Ale |  8.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Imperial Witbier, 8% ABV, sour mashed 1-2 days, and fermented with a blend of Berliner Weisse culture and Belgian Witbier yeast. Beer is barrel fermented in large red wine barrels (132 gal. barrels). Raspberries are added to the beer towards the end of fermentation directly to the barrel, and aged on the raspberries for a minimum of 1 month. The Berliner culture contains souring bacteria and the raspberries will add acidity to the beer. Brewed to commemorate Bottleworks 12th Anniversary.

Original batch provided by Ditmier tonight .. Thanks buddy. Pours a hazy pale yellow.. foamy white head... good lacing.

Nose is big lactic... almost yogurt like... raspberry is way in the background..

Flavor has a fair amount of tannic notes with berries that almost seem "old"... pretty tasty, but seems way past prime... a bit of oak on the finish.

Light body.. good bubble... very drinkable despite my above negatives.

Thanks Eric... There cannot be too many of these left in cellars.

On Tap at Bruery/DFH event on 6/16/11

First of all, I am glad to have tried this, but i am also glad i didnt trade my first born for it. I am not really a huge fan of the berlinerwisse to begin with, but to each their own.

Appearance: It was a cloudy straw color with a very bright white small head that was mostly diminishing. It was left with minimal lacing.

Smell: Wow, definitely something funky going on here...also has a slight grainy/grassy smell to it. Kind of a fresh barnyard smell...

Taste: It has a pucker punch it delivers but also has a spicy rye kind of taste to it almost mixed with some sort of citrus. Again something funky and tart all mixed into one.

Overall: I think for the style it is pretty on par, just not my favorite one to drink. I didnt think it was as good as the hype, but maybe if i really enjoyed this style i would think it is amazing...

Thanks, Dobs.

Cloudy, milky appearance with a peach flesh hue. Highly effervescent, topped by a lasting white head.

Pretty intense Berliner Weiss lacto aroma. There's a ton of offensive rotten egg sulfur, grainy wheat and coriander. Fruity, but it doesn't scream raspberries - the fruit is more of a subtle element. The sulfur is pretty overwhelming here and isn't especially enjoyable. Hopefully a few months in the bottle will clear that up.

The taste, surprisingly, is great. Very tart and lactic, mild sour raspberry fruitiness, coriander, orange peel. Lactic sourness is dominant, very Berliner Weiss-like. A raw, grainy wheat foundation gives the beer a solid body. Finishes with lingering lactic sourness and light vinous oak.

Despite an awful aroma, this was very enjoyable. At this point I'd recommend sitting on bottles for a few months in hopes that the sulfur dissipates.

Chilled bottle into a glass. Generously shared by the late dabecassis (RIP). Thanks, Dave.

A: A slightly cloudy orange-pink body. About a finger of off-white head that leaves broken foam on top of the beer.

S: Wow, this smells absurdly bad. Diaper/feces, sulfurous rotten eggs. Some lactic character, lemons, and white wine as well. But they simply couldn't redeem the nose for me. Awful. Roger loved it, though. Go figure.

T: As bad as it smells, it tastes surprisingly excellent. Lactic sourness, as you'd expect, along with tart raspberry character. Lemon, oak, some sort of white wine presence (chardonnay?). A mild graininess that I guess is the wheat. I think the New Glarus Unplugged BW is better, though this is still quite good.

M: Spritzy and well-carbonated, as you'd expect. It's medium-bodied, which I didn't expect, until I realized this was 8%. It finishes dry, with a light sourness.

O: A tasty beer. Its odor is strange, even offensive, but the beer is enjoyable despite that.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for bringing this to the Whale tasting.

Appearance: The color of this beer is surprising - no redness from the wine barrels or the raspberries. Instead it is a light, very hazy golden color. A modest white cap rests on top and leaves a little bit of bubbly lace.

Smell: The aroma really lacks much depth. White grape and raspberry notes provide the fruit notes. There are some weird off flavors, like feet or something.

Taste: The flavor has a quick light honey sweetness, some white grape and peach come in next, along with some light raspberry flavors. The sour aspect of the beer is there, but there is no funk or real depth to the fruit flavor.

Mouthfeel: This has a light, crisp, champagne dryness to go along with the light white grape notes.

Overall: Maybe this was a victim of following an incredible beer, but I was not really impressed with this beer at all.
