Beer added by: julian on 02-28-2011

Imperial Witbier, 8% ABV, sour mashed 1-2 days, and fermented with a blend of Berliner Weisse culture and Belgian Witbier yeast. Beer is barrel fermented in large red wine barrels (132 gal. barrels). Raspberries are added to the beer towards the end of fermentation directly to the barrel, and aged on the raspberries for a minimum of 1 month. The Berliner culture contains souring bacteria and the raspberries will add acidity to the beer. Brewed to commemorate Bottleworks 12th Anniversary.

Review #750. I want to thank all the big and little beers who got me this far!

Speaking of the big seven-five-oh, Bottleworks XII was a 750ml bottle served in a goblet by the fine folks at Brouwers Cafe. $25 and well worth the trip!

An orange colored beer with hints of pink sits on the bar in front of me. I'm distracted by the architecture of this beer cave, but snap back to it just in time to see the nice white head start to subside. The head leaves a touch of lace as it descents, but the constant stream of bubbles rising in the cloudy liquid replenishes it for the majority of the session.

The smell is intense and slightly off-putting for someone who doesn't love dirty sour beers (or lacto intensive beers like a Berliner Weiss). There's a decent amount of sulfur and diaper smells, but there's so much more. Lurking below those strong scents are some layers of raspberries, coriander, lemons and red wine.

As I gaze around me, sitting here in Seattle at perhaps the best beer bar in the world, I feel lucky. Not in a Clint Eastwood way, but I feel like sometimes a great beer can make you feel like you're at home even when you're thousands of miles away. I feel lucky that establishments like this exist and that legendary, world-class beers like this one are there to enjoy.

Speaking of which, I'm ready to enjoy this one! After the first sip, my mouth can't help but smile. This is really, really good. Huge lacto funk greets my tongue, giving impressions of lemons and horsehair. Some raspberry flavors are present too, but this doesn’t scream fruit beer. Coriander and spice help the tartness seem more grounded and earthy. Then, the barrel hits and red wine and oak notes close out a wonderful palate. No alcohol is noticeable. This is an advanced course beer, but one that has so much depth and rewarding flavors. As I enjoy the glass, bullshit with the bartenders and soak in the majesty of Brouwers, I smile and sip, and smile and sip.

The body is great - it's a bit denser than expected from a "witbier", but it works. The carbonation is on the high/sparkling end of things, but that's OK. Overall, this beer lived up to the hype. If you're sensitive to sulfur or dirty sour smells, you may not be able to get past that, but bear with it, trust me, it's worth it! (2,292 characters)

Thanks to Adam and Gregg for supplying me with these to share. Bottle poured into Lost Abbey tumbler. Color is a hazy pinkish orange, very reminiscent of grapefruit juice. Small off white pinkish head fades to a collar. Smell is very yeasty, lots of sour lemon lactic acid. Some raspberry, oak, and wheat as well, but very heavy on the berliner weiss yeast. Taste is sour but balanced, kind of like an imperial berliner weiss more then a wit. Sour raspberries and lemon acidity, yeast, wheat, some oak and a tart finish. Medium bodied with a medium carbonation, finishes dry. Incredibly refreshing with some very well hidden alcohol. This is a huge success for bottleworks, one of my favorite anniversary beers for them so far. Very unique, try this one out if you get a chance. (778 characters)

750mL capped bottled poured into stemmed glass at Brouwer's on 4/12/11

A: Beautiful slightly hazy golden peach color with fluffy white head that leaves some lacing around glass. Gotta say I have never seen this color in any beer before.

S: Tart and lots of funk from the berliner weisse culture with hints of raspberries. The funky yeast aroma is much stronger than anything else in here.

T: Tastes significantly better than the nose would lead you to believe. Nice and sour with the crispness of a weissbier. Finishes dry and fruity with a pleasant lingering taste of tart raspberries. The 8% ABV is hidden incredibly well.

M: Very crisp and sour, medium-light body with moderate carbonation.

O: Delicious, crisp and refreshing sour. Highly drinkable, great combination of sourness and tart raspberries. This would be perfect to crack open outside on a hot summer day. Thanks to the guys at Bottleworks and The Bruery for dreaming up and crafting such a great beer. (971 characters)

Cloudy, milky appearance with a peach flesh hue. Highly effervescent, topped by a lasting white head.

Pretty intense Berliner Weiss lacto aroma. There's a ton of offensive rotten egg sulfur, grainy wheat and coriander. Fruity, but it doesn't scream raspberries - the fruit is more of a subtle element. The sulfur is pretty overwhelming here and isn't especially enjoyable. Hopefully a few months in the bottle will clear that up.

The taste, surprisingly, is great. Very tart and lactic, mild sour raspberry fruitiness, coriander, orange peel. Lactic sourness is dominant, very Berliner Weiss-like. A raw, grainy wheat foundation gives the beer a solid body. Finishes with lingering lactic sourness and light vinous oak.

Despite an awful aroma, this was very enjoyable. At this point I'd recommend sitting on bottles for a few months in hopes that the sulfur dissipates. (887 characters)

A: A slightly cloudy orange-pink body. About a finger of off-white head that leaves broken foam on top of the beer.

S: Wow, this smells absurdly bad. Diaper/feces, sulfurous rotten eggs. Some lactic character, lemons, and white wine as well. But they simply couldn't redeem the nose for me. Awful. Roger loved it, though. Go figure.

T: As bad as it smells, it tastes surprisingly excellent. Lactic sourness, as you'd expect, along with tart raspberry character. Lemon, oak, some sort of white wine presence (chardonnay?). A mild graininess that I guess is the wheat. I think the New Glarus Unplugged BW is better, though this is still quite good.

M: Spritzy and well-carbonated, as you'd expect. It's medium-bodied, which I didn't expect, until I realized this was 8%. It finishes dry, with a light sourness.

O: A tasty beer. Its odor is strange, even offensive, but the beer is enjoyable despite that. (1,003 characters)

(bottle at Dak's tasting!). I really wanted to try this one and I'm really happy it made an appearance. Pours hazy red grapefruit color. Aroma has some funk and grapefruit/citrusy notes. Taste is sour/tart. Medium bodied with some fizziness on the tongue. A really nice beer. (275 characters)

Thanks for a great trader up in Washington for this bottle. Shared this with some friends at a March Madness tasting. It was pretty delicious and one of the most drinkable beers I have ever had.

The appearance is probably best described as pink lemonade, thanks Masterski. A very vibrant pink color with a nice fluffy head. It is a 'girly' looking beer if there ever was one.

The smell is of light egg white and sulfur with huge raspberry and strawberries. Really good fruit smells with a nice tart sourness in there that just keeps your nose in the glass.

The taste is delicious, and after trying it I immediately wanted a few more bottles. It has a great light sourness with some great berry aspects. Very light bodied and refreshing, it reminded me of a fruited berliener weiss. At 8% ABV, I could drink this all day long.

Overall, a very good beer that I enjoyed immensely. I just wish I could get more of it! (920 characters)

Sampled at Brouwer's

A: Pours a nice light orangish yellow. Nice tall white head that leaves nice lace.

S: Lactic sourness, with hints of acidic citrus, and musty tart raspberries.

T: Nice tasting and nicely acidic. Lactic sourness, citrus zest, and a hint of spice. Light wheaty graininess with a nice tart berry finish.

M: Sorta light and zippy, tart, acidic, with a nice hint of berry.

D: Overall pretty enjoyable, drank the whole bottle by my lonesome. (461 characters)

I was able to have a few glasses of this beer, on tap, at the recent Clusterfork # 2 tasting event at the Bruery.

The beer pours similar to a pink lemonade or guava juice in color, but not quite as dense, though still cloudy. Light hazy half inch of head.

Aromas are of tart raspberries, along with some oak, yeast, and lemon zesty sprits'. The brett is in there as well, but the raspberries really curbed it down a bit in a good way.

On taste, the sour brett and acidic bite are upfront, but it quickly yields to the fruit note of raspberries, lemon peel, and orange peel. This beer is very tart in that regard, but is crisp and refreshing. Some yeast and grain in the middle provide a nice backbone as well to the beer. Alcohol, what alcohol? Like so many of the Bruery beers, they are well hidden. Of our group, we drank quite a lot of this, go through our tickets, and buying some glasses of it afterwards.

Mouthfeel was light to medium carbonation, crisp, zesty like fruit juice, with a dry finish.

Overall this beer was very refreshing, and aside from the Sour in the Rye was the highlight of the day for the beers the Bruery was pouring at this tasting. ( the bottle share beers are another matter) Glad I got to try this beer, and from the two, I'm taking a different look at sours now. (1,304 characters)

The beer appears hazy and light orange in color. The beer has a thick white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. The aroma is quite pleasant, with scents of funk, raspberries, and coriander. I did not enjoy the flavor as much as the aroma, but found the beer favorable nonetheless. Plenty of tartness to be found here, with a healthy dose of raspberries. The body is moderately thin, with a solid carbonation level. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer and I would definitely like to have it again sometime. (571 characters)

A - Definitely a unique looking brew. A finger of white foam settles to a thin cap and thicker collar, along with a few splotches of lace. The body looks like pink lemonade.

S - Fairly heavy on Berliner Weiss character - yeasty, with lactic sourness - but also noticeable brett notes of green funk, diaper, and lemons as well. White wine, oak, and raspberry notes are present but fairly understated.

T - Sour Berliner Weiss character, with lactic acidity, yeast and wheat, mingles with underripe raspberries that impart a tart finish. Alcohol is extremely well hidden - I could see this being 5%. Not quite as good as the smell, but still quite tasty.

M - Zesty carbonation that is style appropriate. Medium body that agrees with the taste, and not the listed ABV. Dry finish with a little pucker.

D - The 8% is a shocker, as this could be mistook for a "heavy" US Berliner Weiss in the 4-5% range. Definitely something I could drink large volumes of, particularly on a hot summer day. In some ways it's a shame this is a Bottleworks Anniversary beer, as it deserves to be a summer seasonal. (1,158 characters)

Thanks for sharing this to round out a decadent 30 hour stretch, Joe. I didn't expect to see this in a hurry. Also, I'm reviewing this as a wild ale and not a wit.

Mildly hazy orange with a dense, pinkish white head with great retention and mild lacing, this is an especially beautiful beer. The nose has plenty of lactic acid berlinerweiss culture with the coriander being quite noticeable. The witbier base is great and bears no semblance to Orchard Wit. Dry, grainy, mildly husky with a fresh, fruity raspberry character that's rather mild, there's also some grassy hay. The palate opens with a clean lactic sourness, fruity and with some mildly tart raspberries. Fresh and vibrant, I get some coriander and lavender as well. Mild tartness and clean lactic sourness on the finish, this is an inspired blend between a witbier and a berlinerweiss. Light in body with a medium-high level of carbonation, this is great stuff.

Drinking a bottle of the new batch, thanks to Abraham. The nose is beautiful, bright and fragrant with a wonderful, clean raspberry aroma along with a moderate blend of wheat, lactic sourness, citrus, funk( earth, dust, must) coriander. More coriander and orange peel than I remember the original batch having. The palate has a bright raspberry fruitiness, tart, bright and super clean - no seed character whatsoever. Pairing really well with the wit beer base and the moderate yogurty lactic sourness, this beer is medium light in body and finishes dry, carbonic and spicy with a touch of funk. A little citrus sourness is present too. Really good. 4.25/4.25/4.25 (1,614 characters)

Ar: Floral and tart, acidic, strong wheat, tropical fruit, very strong flowery character, raspberry, slight funk, nice wit aroma, strong elements of the bruery yeast/classic profile

Ap: Super cloudy, salmon pink, like tropical fruit emergenC, medium white head, fair retention

T: Acidic, raspberry, tropical fruit, strong floral, unique, very strong raspberry, tastes like an emergenC in a lot of ways, nice wit subtleties behind the fruit, the more i have it the better it is, good bitter citrus wit spicing to balance, sweet but balanced by spicing and acidity, tangerine, bright fruit, brett/funk

M: high slightly rough carbonation light/medium body, tart, somewhat criisp

O: Raspberries a bit too strong in taste, nice wit complexities, unique and interesting, best raspberry sour i've had (875 characters)

Thanks to jmoore50 for bringing this to the March Madness tasting party, it was my favorite beer not named Pliny the whole week. Awesomely timed opening for the Marquette drubbing of Xavier.

A cool looking peach and light pink appearance, white head to it, great carbonation. Maybe my senses were overloaded, but the aroma left me questioning whether I was going to be all about this. Certainly sour, but there were some off kilter spice aroma that left me guessing.

Taste, simply put, every sip was better and more sour than the last. A medley of fruit tastes came about from this one. Maybe peach, strawberry, something to give it the pinkish appearance. Puckering. Probably my favorite soured beer, definitely favorite witbier (although the taste is anything but witbierish). (781 characters)

A nice oddity shared by Brad at a recent tasting, poured into a becher glass, close as I could get, sorry.

Beer is pink and hazy with a nice white head of small bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation, looks good.

The nose is quite lactic with some raspberries and a little bit of oakiness or something a little tannic.

Beer is sweet at first with some nice fruit flavor, heavier body than I expected, the forward and midpalate are thick and creamy with a strong lactic sourness and then it all stops. About 75% of the way back on my palate the taste disappears for a moment and then the bitterness from wood or the tartness from the raspberries comes up and the beer finishes a little too dry.

I enjoyed it, it was like a really heavy berleiner with syrup in it in the end. I don't know why it had to be so high in ABV and there seemed to be a connectivity issue with the flavors on the palate. Still enjoyable but I like my sours to be lighter and more effervescent. I think the lactic character of this beer could have bee complemented with some carbonic acid and a thinner body. (1,090 characters)

a - Pours a murky orange-pink color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of raspberries, fruit, spices, some definite funk, and light bread or wheat. More funk than I was expecting in the smell.

t - Tastes of raspberries, tart dark fruits, light sour citrus/orange, light spices, and some funk. More tart than funk in the taste, whereas the smell was the other way around.

m - Medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Mout puckering thanks to the tart raspberries in the taste.

d - Overall this was an interesting beer that I liked. I think some people were mixed on this and got more of the witbier characteristics, but I got a lot of funk in the nose, and a lot of tart fruit in the taste. Would like to try again sometime. (856 characters)

Pours a rosy peachy color, decidedly cloudy, actively bubbling in the glass with thin wisps of foam

Fresh raspberries, lactic tart acidity, sugary grapefruit,

Similar to Hottenroth, raspberries, bitter citrus peel, soft wheat on the finish. Prickly acidity. Light kiss of oak.

Fluffy and voluminous when it hits the tongue. Zesty, spritzy and bright.

This is, for lack of a better term, a very fun beer. The pink and cloudy color, explosive texture, and huge tingly sweet and acidic fruit character make for an engaging and pleasing drinking experience. (558 characters)

Huge, huge thanks to Brad for opening up this bottle at last night's tasting. Served in a Bruery tulip.

Pours a bit lighter than the color of pink grapefruit juice. The nose is really enticing with a mild lactic character along with a great raspberry presence. Really nice fruit all around. Damn good. A bit of mild coriander in there as well; if not that, then some other spice. The flavor is sublimely fruity with a beautiful sourness hitting in the midpalate and carrying through to the finish. A bit of light spicing is there in the flavor as well. The mouthfeel was splendid and did a fantastic job blending the fruit and sourness, and had a really fantastic level of carbonation as well. Overall, a very, very solid beer that I thoroughly enjoyed. (754 characters)

On-tap at The Bruery

A: The pour is a murky orange-pink color with a finger of white head to go on it.

S: The raspberries and the tartness of the fruit and Berliner Weiss culture are strong. A lot of lactobacillus aroma to the beer and a moderate oak note. Mild spices and wheat from the base beer.

T: A big raspberry flavor to open things up along with a pronounced tartness. There are notes of cranberries in the beer too. Quite lactic and tart which works nicely with the oak and fruit. The base wheat beer does not come through quite as much as I had expected.

M: Medium in body with moderate level of carbonation.

O: Pleasantly surprised by this beer. The raspberries and Berliner Weiss bugs really have taken control of this and made for an enjoyable beer. (767 characters)

On tap at The Bruery for the March 19 Clusterfork party.

This is the reason every beer geek should at least try a fresher sour before you stick it in your cellar. While this one may be fun to age and watch it change, it is off the chart wonderful right now; plain and simple full of complexities, layers, tons of flavors and character and yet again a wonderful effort from The Bruery. Kudos to Bottleworks for its efforts on this and for picking this one.

Color is a hazy pink grapefruit with almost "white" tones and a light white head.

Nose gives a great invitation and sets expectations with layers of sweet/sour raspberries, tones of strawberry, oranges and tangerines. There seems to be a light lacto nose, although I'm not sure what yeasts or bacterias were used. A light brett character in the nose as well.

Expectations are met in the fresh, wonderfully balanced and lightly sour mouthfeel, only to be surpassed by almost perfect flavors.

Flavors of raspberries, strawberries, oranges, light lime and tangerines. The alcohol is very well hidden and one could drink a lot of this either by itself or with many different food profiles.

Finish continues with a light pucker factor and a nice sour character with a sour berry and green apple character and light lacto and brett, all of which just sets up the next taste. The Bruery continues it's roll. (1,365 characters)

A - Pours and orange, nice white frothy head, sticky spotty lacing, nice cap on top.

S - Raspberries, oranges, tangerines, lacto funk, sour/tart, oak.

T - Nice lacto funk, slight brett, oranges, raspberries, oak. Just an excellent mix of fruity and sour notes, citrus too. So good!

M - Light, crisp, refreshing, soft carbonation, dry finish.

D - Wow, impressive. So damn good and surpassed the expectations I had for this one. Want more, now!!! (511 characters)

Give it up for Nate the Great cracking this cool looking bottle at our Shogun vs. Bones night.

A - Really good looking beer. A bright, hazy orange color with a good sized white head that leaves some spots on the sides.

S - Funk, brett, some lacto-sourness. Great citrus and something that is almost like tangerines. There is slight vitamin smell that brings this down for me a little bit.

T - Awesome tasting beer with good brett and lacto notes. There is some great citrus fruit taste consisting of raspberries, oranges, and tangerines. Very sour and tart, with a juice-like quality to it.

M - Juicy, medium bodied, lower carbonation.

O - This is a great beer, would love to have more. Reminds me a little bit of Pinotlambicus. Easy to drink and tasty. (758 characters)

Another big thanks to Nate for this 750ml bottle, drank from my Narke glass... Looks like a sparkling water grapefruit drink. A light tan head, good retention and lacing. You'd think something this color would be ugly, but looks good... Interesting but subdued aroma, apples, grape skins, raspberries and brett... The taste shows off more lactic notes than the brett, especially on the finish, almost a puckerer. So many fruits, its almost hard to count, raspberries, oranges, tangerines, a hint of oak on the finish.

This is refreshing and incredibly crushable, get this. (573 characters)

Pours a cloudy peach, white head. Smells of wheat and peach, some sour aroma, and a bit of milk. Tastes Of sour peach, sour tarts, and bready wheat. Mouthfeel is medium full, carbonation high. Very drinkable, despite my not possessing any of this I would seek it out for sure! (276 characters)

Pour: A beautiful golden hue with a slightly pink haze as if they used a blend of golden and regular raspberries in the barrels. A creamy, frothy white head stuck around for the entire duration of this beer.

Taste: Slightly tart from the Berlinner Weiss style and raspberries in the barrel. The tart flavors are predominately raspberry and a light, crisp green apple. This is followed by a wonderful malt balance and a slight oaky finish. I really enjoyed the lactic sour in this as it was very enjoyable but not acidic enough to burn.

Nose: Oak, crisp apple, raspberry, very slight red wine notes, wheat and perhaps some cherry like aroma.

Mouthfeel: A wonderfully balanced and creamy feel that doesn't dry out your mouth like some soured beers can.

Overall: As usual BW has really nailed their newest Anny beer. This is such an easy to drink beer, the 8% is undetectable and the creamy mouthfeel makes it so enjoyable. Wish I could've gotten 3-4 bottles but my 2 should make me happy for now. Excited to see how well this develops. (1,085 characters)
