Beer added by: julian on 02-28-2011

Imperial Witbier, 8% ABV, sour mashed 1-2 days, and fermented with a blend of Berliner Weisse culture and Belgian Witbier yeast. Beer is barrel fermented in large red wine barrels (132 gal. barrels). Raspberries are added to the beer towards the end of fermentation directly to the barrel, and aged on the raspberries for a minimum of 1 month. The Berliner culture contains souring bacteria and the raspberries will add acidity to the beer. Brewed to commemorate Bottleworks 12th Anniversary.

A: Pours a glowing, hazy apricot color with deep golden center and a one finger white head. The head goes down fairly quickly, but leaves a thin surface of large bubbles.

S: Coriander mixed with lemon zest and tart mixed berries upfront. The raspberries are there, definitely with an underripe note to them. A nice lactic aroma as well with just a trace of brett. Fantastic smell.

T: A big load of lemon and intensely tart raspberry upfront with a great lactic sourness. The wit base comes through nicely here, with a touch of coriander and some wheat. Finishes tart and clean with some ripe raspberry and a touch of wine barrel. (632 characters)

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a snifter glass.

A: Pours a hazy gold, translucent, with a finger's worth of white head and moderate visible carbonation.

S: Some funky barnyard, berry fruitiness and mild oak tannins. Not bad, but nothing to blow the metaphorical lid off the glass.

T: Barnyard and some lacto funk, tangy and a bit grassy under the wheat malt. Some Belgian fruity yeast esters, a lemon citrus lactic tartness, and some sweet berry flavor towards the end (apparently raspberries, but it honestly struck me as more strawberry). Hints of Brett funk. Quite dry and attenuated at the end.

M: Light, bubbly body - almost like champagne. Low alcohol presence.

O: This was pretty good, but it really didn't live up to my (fairly high) expectations. Perhaps some time in the cellar will allow more characteristics of a sour beer come through. I expect some of the berries to drop out, but frankly they weren't predominant fairly fresh so I don't expect the beer's flavor to suffer particularly. (1,026 characters)

Opaque apricot with a strongly rising pillowy white head. Recedes just as curtly with scratchy lace.

Bright and pungent citrus acidity joined by a lively herbal grassiness. Chalky sherbet, orange/lemon Pez.

Raspberry sherbet, modestly sour and very rounded from the wheat. Rockmelon, spicy lemon and a raw grassiness. Great stuff.

Palpably thick from the wheat, moderate carbonation, buzzy acidity.

Excellent. So much going on but somehow simple and addictively drinkable. Impressive coup. (547 characters)

Pours a yellow/orange color with a fizzy head that falls fast,

Smell is deep lemon, tart raspberry, funky wet hay, and wheaty malt.

Taste is like the smell with a lactic sourness up front, then fades to a luscious raspberry and hefty wheat beer base. Acidity is medium to low on this sour but it blends nicely with the overall experience. Well done for the style of an imperial berliner weisse / witbier.

Mouthfeel is decently carbonated despite the head completely disappearing, and its just ever so slick as it is 8% abv.

Overall I think this is on par with other bruery sours and quite a nice addition to their lineup which is quite impressive to say the least. (668 characters)

A - Pours a cloudy, honey color with a white fizzy head that doesn't really stick around.

S - Light wheat grains, earthy funk, faint raspberry and lemon. The nose really isn't a wow factor to me as it smells of a wit with none of the extras described on the label.

T - Tart raspberries abound (may'be mistaken for lemon) with a nice wit base. There's also a sweetness that really balances out the sour.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Has a dry finish and is smooth.

O - The smell was the only letdown about this beer. Otherwise, it's kind of a big deal. (560 characters)

Pours a cloudy light blonde. Very inviting nose with some hints of berries and lemon. Absolutely delicious. Maybe the best beer I've had from The Bruery, certainly the best sour I've had from them. The witbier base is completely on point with berry flavor that isn't cloying and lemony tartness that is refreshing. (314 characters)

750 mL bottle courtesy of axeman9182 pours an opaque gold color with a modest, fine-bubbled white head. Retention is great, lacing - not so much.

Nose is pretty heavenly...raspberries on top of lacto - yes please! There is some definite underlying funk and cantaloupe rinds.

Taste has some seedy berry flavors with some leathery brett and fruity tartness...but its not really all that sour. The funk leans more feet than earth. Mouthfeel is good, the tiny carbonation and moderate sweetness give it a full and creamy feel. Raspberries are nice, but the rest of the beer is pretty meh. (586 characters)

The beer comes in a hazy golden wheat color.

The aroma is beautiful. Tons of lactic, apricot, reminds me tons of Fou' Foune, along with some sweet grain.

The flavor has sour lemons, tartness, apricot, maybe a hint of raspberry. A hint of booze with a good amount of sweetness to the tartness.

A fantastic beer and surprisingly has hints of Fou' Foune. (354 characters)

750ml poured into a matching Bruery snifter. The brew appears a hazed golden color with a finger of white that fades back audibly. The cap hangs around with a penline of lace around the glass and spots of lace on thr walls of the glass.

The aroma has that seedy sort of earthen raspberry note overtop some funk that is lightly grassy with a neutral oak scent. It displays almost a perfune-like fruity alcohol aspect.

The taste opens up a bit sulfuric and mineral/carbonic that blends into an earthen natural raspberry flavor. Some wheat grain and hints of lemony alcohol before getting fruity and almost medicinal.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest to effervescent level of carbonation. It smells awesome and taste is well, just decent. For what it is, it is quite enjoyable but I was hoping for less witbier/sulfur/minerals and more tart fruit beer. (862 characters)

Pours dense hazy orange, uneven frothy head dissipates quickly to rest in a swirl on the surface. Aroma is apricot, citrus, raspberry vanilla cream, lactic tart funkiness, oak, fruity red wine notes, earthy barnyard. Taste is lactic tart malt notes, witbier origins evident, mild acidity and citrus, soft raspberry notes coming through the middle, grapes and vinous character to finish. Medium body, mellow sourness and acidity lends a lot of drinkability, well balanced. (471 characters)

Amazing beer. Pours a muddy copper with a think head, probably the weakest point of this beer. Just uninteresting to look at. Smell is raspberry, pineapple, lemon, and wheat. One of my favorite smelling beers ever. Taste is a lot of lemon tartness, mild honey sweetness and wheat. Lots of bread. Very crisp carbonation and light body. Like a dry lemon / raspberry soda. A-Cloudy bright yellow, nicely carbonated, one finger head.

S-Wheat, not much funk, oak, light raspberries.

T-Great balance. Wheat, oak, raspberries and a slight tartness, lemon and orange.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation, crisp dry finish.

2013 vintage. 750 ml bottle.

Poured into a Teku glass, body is hazy gold in color, capped by a dense foam head with low retention, it eventually dissipates to a ring. Just a little lacing. Still, impressive for a sour beer, but this is a witbier, so the malt helps.

Aromas of sweet light malt, wine, fruit, wood, vanilla. Pretty alluring wafts of sweet and sour.

This tastes delicious and complex. Reminds me a bit of Fou F'oune, despite that being a different beast, but there are no apricots here and this has more body. But it has that same level of sour enjoyability. The lactic sourness is very nicely done, overlaid on elements of bread, wood, spice, wine, and raspberry fruit. The raspberry shines through especially towards the finish. Also little pinot like spice in the finish, but that's just my guess, as who knows what kind of red wine was in the barrels. Or it could be the witbier spices they used. Maybe some orange peel. The color gives no suggestion of red raspberries or red wine, but those flavors definitely shine through. I enjoy the moderate sweet malt body, working with the nice bready yeast and pleasant sourness, all working so smoothly with the fruit and wine flavors. Yum!

Body is light, as is the carbonation, giving this a lightly sparkly, refreshing mouthfeel kind of like a soda.

The ABV at 8% is just right to make this a very drinkable, satisfying beer. I can drink this with no problem. A fantastic sour beer, to me, The Bruery's best. Given that it can age up to 2 years, I am getting me some more of this for the cellar. (1,567 characters)

The Bruery tulip

A: Pours completely hazy bright yellow orange color. Half finger of tight bubbled white head. Some light lacing.

S: Lactic notes. Vinous hints. Some raspberry fruit is there. Smells tart. Strangely does smell like a big Belgian tripel. Spice hints.

T: Nice punch of tart lactic flavor right up front. Wheat. Spice notes on the tip of the tongue. Roundness from the barrel. Tannic dryness. Raspberry is fainter than I was expecting. Finish is dry.

The Bruery does some exciting things. Doing it to commemorate a top Seattle beer store and you expect something good. On-tap at Beachwood BBQ, on to the beer:

Wow, this beer is goldenrod colored. Little head on the pour and only a few spots of lace around. The aroma brings to me sweet accents of lemon and a kiss of raspberry. The flavor, straightforward, yet relaxed, easy to translate, and very tasty! It tastes almost like a raspberry lemonade. There's a small dose of funk and vague spice, but even without those lesser notes, the base flavor would rock anyway. The carbonation level is light, perhaps from aging, though its mouthfeel is still at an acceptable level. Better late than never, and I'm glad I got to taste this creation. (740 characters)

Appearance is cloudy, white yellow straw.

Smell is tart, light wheat malt, sour raspberry, some lemony citrus, Belgian wit yeast.

Taste is tart upfront. Some acidic flavor and light wheat malt. Tartness lingers in an amazing way. Sour raspberry comes through and blends well with the tart flavor from the yeast and bacteria. Reminiscent of a berlinner weisse.

Mouthfeel is very nice for style. Medium low carbonation and alcohol can not be detected.

Overall a great imperial sour wit! I have yet to have a sour from The Bruery that I didn't enjoy and I think this is in the top 3. I could easily drink a bottle or 2 of this (682 characters)

A - pours a darker, golden yellow with a little bit of a head that quickly goes away

S - nose is raspberries, lactic sour, and bready malts with some yeasty notes floating over it

T - starts off with a whallop of lemon and raspberries up front. The sharp acidity is tamed by some cereal and bready malts. The sourness of the raspberry comes back with a vengeance, albeit some of the red wine barrel aging helps tame it. The dry tannic flavors linger on the palate.

M - medium bodied, spritzy and ends dry

D - overall, this is an intense beer. Lot of sourness packed into it, however there are enough other things going on to not only cut into the sourness but add very nice layers of complexity. Very much recommended for those who like red wine barrel aged beers, and especially framboises. (879 characters)

Poured into a tulip on 9/8/13. No date on bottle.

A: Pours a hazy, almost cloudy, straw blonde color that looks remarkably like a Hefeweizen. It's not as cloudy as a Hefe, but you still can't see through the glass. A 1/2-inch head of tiny bubbles is visible upon pour but disappears completely within a few minutes. Lacing is excellent with champagne-like bubbles clinging to the glass sides.

S: Wheat malt, citrus notes (lemon and orange), and lacto tartness are prominent on the nose. Coriander, belgian yeast funk, raspberries, and a tinge of grassy notes linger in the background. The label says that this beer was brewed "with spices," but I dont pick up any pepper notes. Overall, an underwhelming nose.

T & M: There is alot going on here. Citrus lemon and green apple notes up front with the expected lacto sourness. Raspberries, coriandor, red wine, and some banana sweetness lingers on the back-end. It's very complex, yet muddled. It's also a spicier beer than the nose would indicate. In terms of mouthfeel (this beer's best quality), this is a very light yet remarkably smooth beer. It's definitely a summer beer - not something I'd want to drink while it was cold outside.

O: I like, but don't love, this beer. It's definitely a porch-sipper on a hot summer day. But it's just not sour enough for my palate. It tends to be more on the funky/complex side than the sour side. Unfortunately, I find there's almost too much complexity going on. Flavors become muddled and the sum of the parts doesn't transcend each individual component. A good beer - it just doesn't have the sourness and straight-forward flavor profile I was expecting. (1,651 characters)

A - light amber in color. Standard pour produces rather aggressive head that dissipates particularly quickly.

S - your usual cast of characters for an awa: funk, wine, light vinegar, citrus. Looking for the raspberry and it's there but faint.

T - getting all the same elements that showed up on the nose with a much more noticeable raspberry presence. Oak shows up on the back end. Very light acidity but extremely drinkable. Almost like a kicked up Berliner. Very crushable.

M - very nice effervescence, almost Champagne-like. Nice sweet and tart aftertaste.

O - I had very high expectations for this beer and it definitely delivered. It's not as acidic as some of the other Bruery beers. Delicious. (708 characters)

750ml bottle (2013 vintage) poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours a faintly hazy barely orange tinted golden color in the glass. Three fingers of fizzy, almost soda-like head forms quickly and falls just as quickly giving way to a very small white collar and an endless stream of aggressive bubbles that cause the surface of the beer to churn a little bit from all of the activity.

S - Earthy and mildly funky aroma up front, a bit musty. Mild fruit presence - can't decide if it is more raspberry or red wine influence...seems to be a combo of both. After getting a few more whiffs, the fruity raspberry presence takes stronger hold of the aroma yielding fresh picked red raspberries with their sweet and tart combination coming thru nicely. Mildly tart, low level graininess for malt backing.

T - Quite fruity with strong raspberry flavors...again, like fresh picked from the garden. Refreshingly tart and lacticly sour...not super sour, but on par with a good lemonade - thirst quenchingly tart. Fruit fades away towards the finish where the red wine character picks up, more tannic, cherry and dark berry-like in its fruitiness. Wood oak flavors from the barrel as well. Base beer is a bit unassuming. Very low graininess, hints of lemony citrus.

M - Lighter body with a very strong carbonation. Tart and refreshing. Very nice fruity character with very fresh raspberry flavors - some of the best, most natural tasting raspberry character I've ever found in a beer. Low musty funkiness that fits in very appropriately.

O - Very good raspberry summer refresher. Great, fresh raspberry character in aroma and flavor. Crisp and refreshing tartness and tingly carbonation. Base beer is pretty basic with the fruit and wine barrel yielding most of the character. Alcohol presence isn't noticeable even at 8%. Mild funkiness. Very nice beer - expected a ruby colored beer with an overwhelming abundance of raspberry. Instead, I got a nicer balance. Tart, a little bit of funk, well balanced and garden fresh raspberry addition and subtle wine barrel influence...what I got was better than I expected...and I had high expectations for this ahead of time. (2,156 characters)

Appearance: (4)
Pours a hazy hue of apricot with a brilliant white, 2 fingers tall head. Unsurprisingly for a sour, the head recedes very fast, leaving no lacing behind it it's wake. Lively carbonation shows clearly in the body.

Aroma: (4.25)
As soon as the beer is poured, waves of clean acidity waft up out of the glass towards your face. Your nose is filled first with bright lemon juice and some nice tart cherries from the lactic acid. Underneath these bright acidic tones are layers of vibrant, fresh raspberries. These fruity aromatics are blanketed by a thin layer of barnyard funk. As the beer warms, the raspberry presence grows in it's potency and some of the witbier elements start to show; predominantly light clove. Some of the witbier spiciness melds really well with the faint streak of vanilla that the wine barrels provide.

Taste: (4.5)
As soon as this beer touches your palate, you're struck by a blast of juicy lemon acidity. As this acidity starts to subside, a nice subtle essence of tart raspberry comes into the fold. The raspberry presence is light, but very nuanced; you get the tartness and even some of the sweetness from them. Enveloping the berries is an equally light coating of Brettanomyces. Before the dry, slightly tart finish your palate is kissed by a pleasant, soft cracker-like malt backbone. Long lingering notes of tart raspberries, cherries, cloves and a soft bready maltiness. Subtle notes of vanilla from the wine barrels embellishes the malt notes in the finish.

Mouthfeel: (4.5)
Robust, medium body with higher side of moderate carbonation.

Overall: (4.25)
Yet another very unique beer from The Bruery. Here they took an Imperial Witbier, dosed it with their Berliner Weisse culture and threw it in red wine barrels with fresh raspberries. Incredibly, they managed to keep in balance the tart Berliner Weisse cultures and naturally tart raspberries with the normally very delicate Belgian Witbier style. Although its not my favorite sour from the Bruery, this is a very high quality beer and definitely worth tracking down. (2,128 characters)

Another split with rudzud.

Decent fizzy semi thick head covering, nice lacing, hazy peach orange color.

Nose is nice and complex, light wheat aromas, nice wit and blond malts, light citrus and peel with light wit spices as well. Then fruit, bit of stone fruit, little juicy, light wine like aromas a light red wine not really vinous or huge dark red wine, light musty funk almost Brett but hard to tell, raspberry is there but faint and more like the seed bitterness.the more I nose the more the raspberry finally comes through more.

Taste is so so, big musty funk like, sour funk and wild Brett like flavours, tannic seed and stem, some grape skin must and light wine but barely, hint of toasted oak, and little buttery cracker and barrel. Raspberry is there but still light, more like seed and stem bitter tannic flavor. Finish is dry with more tannic bitter flavours, light sticky and syrupy, flemmy, light vinous must again and light raspberry.

Mouth is med bod, nice fluffy carb, little flemmy.

Overall meh, not nearly as great as I was expecting, raspberry is more of the tannic seed/stem and very little fruit, funk is muted too much, wit beer comes out too strong, the wine barrel is pretty nice but might be what's muting the other great flavors. (1,260 characters)

Appearance: Slightly cloudy light-amber color. Moderate white head that dissipated fairly quickly.

Smell: Tart raspberries and mild funk. I also get a faint bready aroma.

Taste: Tart raspberries and touch of funk. The beer finishes fairly dry with a bit the raspberry and mild funk notes. The beer is tart rather than sour.

Mouth-feel: Fairly light bodied with a moderate level of carbonation.

Overall: A good sour. I will add, upon letting it warm a bit above the recommended serving temp, the taste profile came across more balanced and vibrant. (566 characters)

A - Poured a light hazy peachy orange with reddish tint hue with a thin white blanket that left a thin halo and wisps.

S - Aromas of legit Belgian wit beer, great Belgian spice notes, super faint red wine notes here which I was not expecting, raspberry is faint to, much fainter than I thought it would be, light musty cellar as well.

T - Taste is nice and sour, not overpowering, more nice wit notes and Belgian spices, the red wine is faint, more musty cellar, slight raspberry seed, not much raspberry flesh. Raspberry is much fainter than I would have liked. Hmmmm

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, drinkable, light on the tongue.

O - Overall I was surprisingly underwhelmed by this beer, can't believe how mediocre this is. veryi unfortunate. (812 characters)

Pours papaya orange. Dense white head that dissipates into a layer. Love the color.

Barnyard, orange peel, smells like a lot of bacteria with a minor fruity undertone.

Sour raspberry, apricot, dry oak, very faint pear. Grassy earth notes. Lemon pang. Very tasty.

Soda pop carbonation and mouthfeel. ABV tastes around 6.5% - well hidden. Drinkability is good.

Unique and solid sour. One of the best The Bruery beers out there. The Bruery is getting damn good at sours. (471 characters)
