Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Halcyondays on 05-07-2011

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Cuir is our third anniversary ale. It is the same recipe as Papier, but again created using the Solera method. Each year we will continue to blend old barrels of anniversary ale with a new batch of the same beer, adding an additional layer of complexity that will grow over time as we continue to age and blend with each anniversary, creating an older average age to the ale.

A - Foggy brown color with a one finger head, which recedes into lace.

S - Smells like sweet woodyness. Definite old ale style tones, a slight smell of spice and or yeast.

T/M - Creamy texture up front, mild somewhat tartness in the middle with a woody medium dirty bitterness at the end, definite heat from the %14+/-ABV.

O - Hot damn! No literally, pretty much a hot ass beer with some woody tones, cannot really detect any bourbon or even whiskey tones from this beer, a little too sweet to discern them from the beer.

PP (Price Point) - $17 for a 750ml bottle, Ill give it a "Meh" rating, as far as the ABV goes its well worth the price, but the style isn't doing too much for me, I think it could benefit from a few years of cellaring.

Finally bought a bottle of this. After trying it, I want another one to let it sit for at least a year, probably 2.

Very dark murky orange. Smell is potent and nice. Smelled it as soon as I popped the top on the bottle. Dark fruits, raisins, figs, burnt sugar. Taste is the same, but the ABV makes itself known. Alcohol is very noticeable. Love the mouthfeel. Creamy and just slightly carbonated. I'd rank the taste and the mouthfeel at a 4.5 if the ABV wasn't so noticeable. I feel that after a year or two, the alcohol taste might mellow and makes this even more enjoyable. Very nice though. Not sure if it is worth the money, but still very nice.

Fairly muddled brown color with lots going on, some turbidity through the browness, not much in terms of head. Lovely aroma, damn, coconut is forceful more than any other beer that didn't have coconut in the name. Vanilla, oak, char, chocolate after that. Good warming sensation from the alcohol.

Taste, wow, so much better than Coton and Papier as far as hiding the heat. This is a monster beer. More and more layers of complexity are revealed with each sip. Toffee and caramel are pretty substantial. Maybe some molasses and leather as well. Really appreciate the creaminess of this one, helps hide the alcohol quite well, I kept telling myself how amazing this was at hiding the alcohol, very nice. The woody touches are right in the ideal amount.

Really exceeded my expectations with this beer. Time to start adding to my little stash of this beer.

Large shared bottle. 4 years old.
Very fruity aroma featuring dried plums and other dark fruits. Bitter and sweet with a touch of tartness.
Warming but not hot.

Half finger of offwhite head, red-brown cloudy body. Swirly surface memory.

Plum on the nose, dark fruit, faintly sour grape.

Taste is sweet with some hops to balance it. Some dark fruit and powerful malt. Peach and fig? Dates. Faintly tart. Some alcohol burn, faintly. Similar to Samichlaus, but less sticky and sweet.

Smooth mouthfeel, decent for the style.

Overall a nice American strong-- paired with Fritos Flavor Twists.
Overall decent
