Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Cuir is our third anniversary ale. It is the same recipe as Papier, but again created using the Solera method. Each year we will continue to blend old barrels of anniversary ale with a new batch of the same beer, adding an additional layer of complexity that will grow over time as we continue to age and blend with each anniversary, creating an older average age to the ale.

750ml, #12857, into a snifter.

A: Pours an amberish brown with a nice off-white head.

S: Lots of raisin and prune in the nose, some oxidation, mild oaky bourbon.

T: Heavy grape flavor, almost quad-like, with a backbone of cooked caramel, light oak, dark booze, a bit buttery, and some light bourbon and bitterness in the finish.

M: Thick with light yet creamy carbonation.

O: The prune/grapey aspect of this beer makes it a bit too sweet, but I still enjoyed it.

A: Slight cream head over cloudy brown liquid.

S: Caramel, yogurt and grass.

T: Caramel, yogurt, grass, pears, bananas, pine and alcohol.

M: Medium to thick viscosity and a high level of fine carbonation.

O: Sour, caramely and tasty. This beer would be fantastic aged even more.

Enjoyed with Daftcaskbc.

Appearance. Pours a murky, orange-brown with a thin, off-white head.

Smell. Sweet caramel, some white wine and wood, a little coffee and vanilla. There are also some unidentifiable (to me, anyways) woody spices.

Taste. Sweet caramel, cedar and a little pine, molasses and plums, maybe a little cherry. High abv is fairly well hidden, but what comes through is smooth. Sweet and delicious.

Mouthfeel. Full body, medium-low carbonation. Sticky and a little warm.

Overal. Sweet and full of flavour. Nice stuff.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.
Bottle: 11444

Pours a nice murky orange brown color. Very muddy. There is a nice 1 inch ecru head that forms that is dense and has some medium sized chunky bubbles sprinkled around.

Aroma starts off with sweet caramel and some nice booze notes. Some sweet tobacco notes with some malt and grain in there as well. Slight worn leathery aromas as well. As it warms there are some darker fruit notes that come up like some prunes. Very nice and sweet.

Flavor starts down the same line as the nose only it explodes with flavor more quickly. Caramel, molasses and other sweet nectars. Some nice heat is present as well even though it isn't too hot. Very delicious. Prune notes and some raisins are mixed in with some earthy grain and sweet malt. Flavor is delicious and not too cloying for me. There is some oaky notes to the brew as it warms that mixes in well with some slight earthy grain notes and some good molasses notes. There is also a nice tingly mild heat on the backend. Mouthfeel is delicious. Nice carbonation but with some nice syrupy and oily feel.

Overall. This is better than their 2nd year release in my humble opinion. Yes it is a sweet Old Ale but has a bit more balance than the Coton. Very nice.

Bottle (Cuir version): Poured a dark brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with medium retention and some light lacing. Aroma of alcohol ester are pretty strong with some light vanilla notes and some toffee and sweet caramel notes. Taste is also dominated by quite strong bourbon notes with some sweet toffee and very sweet caramel malt notes. Body is quite full with medium carbonation and too much alcohol was apparent. The idea behind this beer is great but the execution is less then perfect. Even after two year aging the beer is still way too hot and lacking attenuation.

Pours a murky, brownish orange colour, with a light beige finger of head. Aroma of mild oak and vanilla mingle with caramel and nutty sweetness, a bit of alcohol, touches of chocolate. A hint more booze on the taste, with some oaky, rich caramel sweetness, molasses, and an earthy nuttiness. It's full in body, rich, coating.

It's a little hot, but it's a great and interesting Old Ale. I look forward to do a 5 year vertical next year!

A: Pours a murky rusty brownish amber. Good sized fizzy tan head which fades slowly. Spotty lacing.

S: Big boozy raisins with loads of caramel backing it up. Strong brown sugar. Some other dark fruits such as cherry and plums maybe? I get a bit of cocoa in there too. Stinging alcohol. Just a touch of oak. Very nice, almost smells like a spiced rum in a way.

T: Up front is sweet and fruity with the raisins, plums, cherries, maybe even grape skin? Caramel, brown sugar and a bit of toffee in the middle. A little bit of bitter cocoa in the finish with a touch of oak and vanilla. Really nice lingering fruitiness between sips.

M: Big and heavy for sure. Not syrupy or cloying though. Drying on the back end with hints of oak.

O: Excellent old ale. I've actually had Fruet prior to having this, and I would say that Fruet is definitely a bit better, especially with the 100% barrel aging. Wish I had 100% BA Cuir to compare but this will have to do. Regardless, they made a sweet 14.5% beer without making it too sweet. Surprisingly balanced and complex. I enjoyed it a lot.

Sample: 1 bottle 2011

A: Dark garnet in color, pours a small light brown head that quickly dissolves into nothing, no lacing, minimal internal carbonation, slightly cloudy

S: Fragrant, heavy dried fruits, some citrus, caramel, some alcohol, even has some port notes to it, complex and intriguing

T: Quite flavorful, similar to the nose, almost has a barley wine characteristic to it, definitely some chocolate-covered fruit, sweet and fruity, but balanced and complex, some alcohol to finish (needs some age), but pretty amazing

M: Certainly a heavy ale, but still pretty smooth, alcohol is only moderately strong, moderate dried fruit aftertaste, not lingering, only slightly drying

O: An excellent example of the style, full of flavor, great fragrance, and smooth as well, a must-try, definitely could use some aging, but great fresh
