750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Didn't write down the bottle info for this one. I'm slacking. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Rich mahogany body. Khaki head. Sticky and sugary-looking as it clings to the glass. I'm amazed by the head for this ABV.

Smell - Great bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Sweet caramel and leather. I wrote down "Pilgrim hat." What the hell does that mean?

Taste - Bourbon and sweet caramel. Not as complex as the aroma, but the barrel still comes through nicely. Vanilla and some oak tannins. Extremely sweet.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation, which is stunning. Boozy, but still not quite what I expected from the ABV of this guy. Thick and extremely sweet. Not quite as much as Black Tuesday, but it's still standard operating procedure for the Bruery's giant beers.

Overall - Good. The bourbon is great. The beer is just too sweet. That much sugar keeps it less than great.

Drunk the 25% and the 100% back to back

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, cream-white head with good retention. A thick, dark red body, transparent, with high levels of carbonation. Head fades to a splotchy wisp and ring that remain to the end of the ride. No lacing down the glass. Exact replica of the base beer.

SMELL: Lots of barrel on this one. Bourbon, vanilla, and some toffee notes. A touch of spicy aromas from the base beer as well. This is very bourbon barrel heavy, but it's enticing for sure.

TASTE: Very barrel heavy again. Bourbon, oak, vanilla and milk chocolate kick things off right away. Toffee and caramel sweetness from the base beer come in through the middle, moving into a bold and lingering barrel heavy finish. Bourbon and oak, milk chocolate, toffee, and a light red fruit note linger. Very tasty and surprisingly well balanced given the big barrel presence. The base beern held its own here.

PALATE: Similar to the base beer, but perhaps a little lighter on the palate. Higher levels of carbonation and creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a little bite at the swallow and finishes rather dry. More heat lingers than the base beer.

OVERALL: Excellent bourbon barreled strong ale, though I'd appreciate a thicker feel and more restrained carbonation for top marks. Despite the barrel heavy nose, the taste was actually quite well balanced; the base beer refused to be outdone. A quality brew for sure. Cheers for sending this one over dboon.

5.0 A: Dark brown color. Two and a half fingers of tan creamy/frothy head. Retention is infinitely impressive for a beer of this magnitude. It stays around a long ass time. A small ring of lacing is left.

4.5 S: That additional 70% in a barrel makes all the difference. This reeks of bourbon and fortunately the barrel aging was done extremely well. Leathery, peat, and spicy with melon and apple fruitiness. Somehow very minimal booze. Underneath there is brown sugar, caramel, plum and raisin fruitiness. The base beer comes off a lot more mellow that the regular Cuir, which is mellow to begin with. Still, very nice.

4.5 T: Like the nose, the bourbon makes it's presence known. Same flavors as in nose. However, the base beers is allowed to come out and it comes out strong. Tons of brown sugar to start. Raisin, plum, tobacco, date, and fig fruitiness. Caramel, molasses, vanilla, oak. Somehow this is less boozy than the regular. The only thing preventing this from getting that perfect score is the sweetness. There's simply too much of it. But, that is the way of the Bruery.

4.0 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Chewy with a mild amylase build-up.

4.0 D: Very tasty sipper/desert beer. A bit sweeter than I prefer, but sometimes you are in the mood for something like that. Tonight is one of those nights.

Pours a murky brown with a khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, vanilla, wood, and bourbon. Taste is the same with some toasted coconut flavors as well. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good barrel aged beer that I enjoyed much more than the regular Cuir.

A - Pours a medium to dark brown with a foamy light tan head. Good retention.

S - Carmel and boozy bourbon.

T - Carmel, vanilla, bourbon.

D - Good carbonation, medium to heavy body.

O - Bold and heavy, lot of bourbon, which is always a good thing. This one should age nicely.

So... I'd love to give the full review, but I'm not going to waste my time on all the characteristics... why because this beer taste like a fly... Why? Because there was a FLY IN IT.

Indoor NYC tasting... in FEB... ie, NO FLY weather.

Glass was washed out clean to have a new style.

Glass was 95% finished and guess who was at the bottom. THE FLY... Not the Jeff Goldblum type... the 1958 "help me" version.

I hope my Black Tuesday doesn't have a roach in it... ugh.

I've had this a few times, most recently at largadeer's office tasting. Served in a tulip.

A - Surprisingly sizable tan foam that settles to a partial cap, collar, and a few spots of lace. Slightly transparent ruby-brown body.

S - Lots of toasted coconut, marzipan, oak, bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, cotton candy, red fruits, treacle. Seems sweeter than 100% BA Coton - I guess the aged, oxidized portion of the beer is growing in percentage. Still, quite nice. Well-hidden alcohol.

T - Again, a hefty dose of caramel, burnt sugars, treacle, butterscotch, hint of chocolate and a bitter oak finish. Again, more sweetness and less over barrel presence than Coton.

M - Thick, creamy, clingy, full body. Easy to drink, with well-hidden alcohol and only mild warmth in the finish. Carbonation is low but present.

D - For me 100% Coton seems to have hit the sweet spot in balancing bourbon, barrel, booze, and sweet malts, no pun intended. This vintage is sweeter and a little tougher to drink in large quantities. Still, pretty impressive for nearly 17%.

Update: I had this almost exactly six months later and it's easier to drink. Still not quite on par with BA Papier or BA Coton, but getting there.

Sampled December 2011
A vigorous pour into my Lost Abbe Teku glass produces a three-finger thick, relatively large bubbled, creamed-amber tinged head. The beer is a darkish amber color that shows a hazed, opaque, amber hue when held up to the light. My first smell of the aroma has me noticing notes of toasted, sweetened coconut, lots of vanillin, ample vanilla-scented toffee and caramelized grain. My second smell has me noticing more of the spicy oak, toasted wood notes and definite Bourbon like aromatics. This makes me think of some sort of Bourbon soaked, caramelized grain type sweet, holiday cake / bread. Quite rich and satiating smelling, and without a huge, hot alcohol note; I was a little timid of this bee, as I thought it would be overly boozy, but this mostly manages to not be (at least in the nose).

Lightly sweet up front, along with a sort of tart, bourbon like note, the finish has a lot more sweetness to it though with a rich, caramelized type of character that really accentuates a sweet, lightly toasted coconut and vanillin character. This beer is quite smooth, there is a touch of alcohol warmth, but it is kept well in check; there is definitely a bourbon flavor here, smooth, but warming, tart, lots of oak flavors and even some fruit-like Bourbon notes. The finish has a spiciness, redolent of oak, astringent oak and hop bitterness that adds some bite, but really the smoothness from the toffee / caramel an sweetness is the dominant note here. Not overly thick, or chewy for its strength, this is most definitely a sipping brew as it has a dense, palate coating viscosity, but it doesn’t seem overly heavy or rich somehow.

Surprisingly, this is much better than I was expecting; I was expecting to actually not like this, not only am I not hating this, it is actually quite good. Really the surprise is that it is so smooth, and so well integrated and not nearly as hot as it should be. Despite being quite drinkable now, this will get a lot better with age, and perhaps a lot of it. Richness, roundness, complimentary oxidation, and a needed complexity should come with age, and I would guess that this could go for a lot longer than I would expect; this beer might even have the potential to go for a long, long time. It should at least go for 5 years with improvement, and, assuming it doesn’t fall apart for unexpected reasons it should go a lot longer; hold on to a bunch and sample over the next 50 years. Currently it is a bit simplistic, but, like I said, I expect some age to make this even better.

I shared this one with thain709 and deuane earlier.

A - Pours murky brown with a nice one and a half finger tall khaki head leaving very light lace down the glass.

S - Smells of brown sugar, toffee, caramel, warm bourbon booze, vanilla, dark fruits and a touch of sherry. This one has a lot going on, nearly all of it for the good.

T - Starts off with a big dose of sugary sweetness - mostly brown sugar, toffee and caramel - slowly giving way to hints of dark fruits, vanilla and some light sherry. The booze continues to grow slowly as it sits in the glass. Finish is a mix of sweetness and a bit of booze, lingering on the pallet long after consumption.

M - Heavy body and bold flavors with moderate carbonation. Sweet, boozy feel that lingers on the pallet long after the finish.

O - I rather enjoyed this one. It had a ton of awesome flavors and the bourbon matched very well with the base. It is still a touch too hot for my liking. Glad I have a few of these in the cellar for future testing.

Taste: This one is quite good, makes me regret the bruery membership slightly less. Sweet bourbon, brown sugar, sweet molasses, caramel, toffee, oak, vanilla, maple sugar, touch of spice and dark fruits, light oxidation
Mouthfeel: almost full body, appropriately light carbonation
Overall: Very tasty and impressive, good showing by the bruery.

I opened this for our group at some sort of tasting.

A - A brown colored beer with a bit of a tannish head that didn't stick around for very long. Faded to a bit of a ring and not much else.

S - Pretty big and potent beer. There's a lot of caramel, toffee, bourbon, barrel and brown sugar. It's a really nice Old Ale, with a nose along the lines of BA Coton and a little bit like BB4D.

T - Lots of vanilla, bourbon, sweet brown sugar, burnt sugar. Slight bit of dark fruit with some oak and a certain amount of spice. It's very sweet, just a touch too sweet for me, but that doesn't make it bad. Very full flavored with lots of nice burnt sugars and some barrel.

M - Full bodied, thick, and syrupy. Lower carbonation, find for this beer.

O - Liked this a lot. I liked BA Coton a little better as I thought it was not as sweet, and BA Papier even more or the same reason. Still, great stuff. If you're looking for something along the lines of BB4D or Adam from the Wood, this is a great one.

Bottle 3223, poured into a tulip.

Deep, murky purple with ruby highlights when held to a light. The head is beautiful and so thick and creamy it could probably support me if I lie on it. The cappuccino-colored foam descends slowly, leaving behind thick columns of lacing.

Tangy, intense nose. Lots of tangy brandy, dark chocolate syrup, butterscotch, raisins, vanilla. A surprising amount of roasted, chocolatey character here. Very rich.

While the flavor is incredible, what most impressive about barrel-aged Cuir is the concealment of its alcohol content. At 14.5 percent ABV, the fact that I can’t pick up even a hint of booze in the flavor is just superhuman. Some booze obviously warms the chest and comes through the nostrils, but it stays out of the flavor, allowing me to fully enjoy it without distraction.

And what a feast it is. The nose is mirrored here: bourbon and brandy-soaked raisins drizzled in rich dark chocolate sauce. The oak is a little more noticeable, imparting the nice woody notes that accompany the stuff from the bourbon: vanilla, butterscotch. It all combines in a sweet, smooth finish that’s very quaffable despite its richness.

A beer like this needs a body big enough to support the flavor, and this Cuir’s got it. Creamy, sugary medium with just a little carbonation, good heat and a very mild bitterness. Lots of lingering sugars between sips as well.

The Bruery’s anniversary series just keeps getting better, which may be a product of the Solera process, or may just be because they’re great brewers. Cuir is the best of the series so far, and BA Cuir improves upon it. The bottle was dangerously easy to finish by myself. Plus, I got a nice little strip of leather to use as a luggage tag. I'll never lose my bags again!

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter. Thanks to bauermj for bringing this over.

Appearance: The pour is a full caramel color with a tight off-white head.

Smell: Caramel, marshmallows, bourbon, vanilla, oak.

Taste: The taste is very smooth. Vanilla, caramel malt, and then a toasted malt leads into a strong, boozy bourbon flavor. Vanilla, spice and oak help to finish out with a bit of maple and alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel: Creamy with a medium level carbonation, and a body on the full side. Given the 14.5% ABV though, "on the full side" is pretty light. There is a grainy nature to it.

Drinkability: This is quite a good beer, but it does not quite top the list of best old ales I have had. Bourbon barrel fourth dementia is better.

Poured into snifter from bottle.

Appearance: Dark wood color. Dark brown and red combination. Strong off-white head retention and a lot of lacing.

Smell: Smells great. A lot of bourbon smell that included caramel and vanilla notes. Oak notes present as well. Some chocolate notes and toffee.

Taste: A lot of sugars. Very sweet. The caramel notes are very present along with the toffee. Bourbon. The chocolate is more recognizable in the taste than in the smell.

Mouthfeel: Thick bodied with a good amount of carbonation. A definite dessert beer.

Overall: It's a delicious old ale. Not my favorite beer because it is too sweet for me. The bourbon flavors are amazing.

Pours a deep clear reddish brown color with a decent head that lasts a while leaves a little lace. Smells of caramel, brown sugar, alcohol and lots of tart fruit. Bourbon vanilla and oak tannins round this beer out nicely. Taste is sweet with brown sugar coated raisins and cherries, oak vanilla and bourbon. Smooth bit of alcohol burn reminds you this one is big. Sweet sticky mouthfeel, medium body and carbonation level. I enjoyed the hell out of this one. This is a fantastic barrel aged beer, if it just wasn't so pricey and hard to get...

2011 vintage bottle served in a CBS snifter glass.

Appearance: Cuir is a dark caramel, mostly opaque color with yellow-brown highlights at the top of the body. Pours a thin foggy layer of cream-colored head that quickly settles into a thin bubbly ring around the glass. Minimal lacing. 4/5

Smell: Oak, red grapes and maple. Bourbon and vanilla too. A little boozy. 4.5/5

Taste: Very complex and sweet, but not overly sweet. This is a very balanced brew. Brown sugar and red grape hit up front. Then lots of bourbon flavors without the alcohol bite coat the mid-palate. Yum! As the beer layers, dark fruits flavors gradually grow, with lots of fig and raisin on the mid-palate. Lots of raisin flavor! A little oaky too. The finish is bourbon without the alcohol bite, raisins and a twist of vanilla. This is absolutely one of the most delicious tasting beers that I have ever had and it is surprisingly smooth and balanced for a barrel aged beer -- especially one that is 14.5% ABV. The alcohol was apparent in the nose, but is hidden in the flavor. 5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus bodied, minimal carbonation. Thick and tasty. Finishes sweet. 4.5/5

Overall: An absolutely brilliant beer -- possibly the best Old Ale that I have ever had. Cuir is a bit pricey, but it is well worth the cost.

Recommendation: Even casual beer drinkers will be able to appreciate this brew. Beer geeks need to seek this limited-release brew out and wallow in its robust complexities.

Pairings: Chocolate and caramel brownies.

Cost: $35 for a 750 ml bottle.

Pours a layer of beige head. Leaves a little lace. Color is a caramel copper brown.

Aroma: a nice amount of warming bourbon. Chocolate, vanilla, toffee, caramel, raisins, dark fruits, oaky. Very sweet and warming.

Taste: Very sweet. Vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Caramel and toffee with chocolate notes. Dark fruits.

Mouthfeel: Warming, smooth, and creamy. Full bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry.

Overall, this is a fantastic beer. It has a lot of great flavors and is very drinkable, especially for the abv. It definitely tastes like the bruery's barrels.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color, slightly murky, with a fan light head. Carmel in the nose, vanilla, and brown sugar. Surpisingly little if any booze notes. The sweetness in the nose pretty much overpowers any barrel that I can notice. Very appealing aroma though. Very smooth medium mouthfeel. Very luscious taste with notes of caramel, butterscotch, and vanilla. Some barrel makes its way into the taste. Again, surprised how drinkable this is given the abv. Very good.

Many thanks to msulinski for this bottle, a great trader in a state that seems to breed a lot of 'em. I loved the regular version of Cuir, so I've been looking forward to this one, & have an option on two more bottles (from another fine Pennsylvania trader, oddly enough). Big, expensive 750 ML bottle poured into a small glass, other half goes into the fridge for my hard-working wife.

Let me say that the gold wax was perfect...not like the finger-slicing Cuir waxing. THIS is how you wax a bottle, well enough to serve & protect, but not so much that you need a bowie knife to get the junk off, or have it crumble into three thousand pieces. Pour is dark muddy with crimson flaring around the edges; surprisingly persistent head given the high ABV. The smell, oh, the lovely, ass-grabbing smell. Bourbon & vanilla are apparent at arm's length, or more. Sweet malts, brown sugar, caramel, molasses. Freakin' beautiful. This must be what a threesome smells like.

100% Barrel Aged Cuir singes & burns like a shot of liquor; I lost nose hairs. The alcohol is searing to the point of distraction. The bourbon & vanilla in the nose run roughshod through the taste. Underneath that is a riot of complexity. Strong sherry flirting with the beginnings of oxidation. Dates, or figs, or raisins. Malty? Yeah, I suppose. Plenty of caramel. Finish is maddeningly sweet, like a honey-based maple syrup. Despite the obvious carbonation, this is a heavyweight of a beer in the stomach. I shouldn't have eaten dinner. Just like the regular Cuir, terrifyingly drinkable for a huge beer. If my wife isn't home soon, I'm going to finish the whole bottle.

Mmmm. Belly warm. Happy. This is an excellent beer, simply superb. I'll be interested to see how this blend ages, I'd love to try it again in a year when the alcohol starts to trim sail, but the early notes of oxidation are alarming.

this beer pours a dark dark amber to reddish brown color with a decent head. the smell is absolutel phnomenal vanilla tons of caramel bourbon light oak and a hug boozy sweetness. the flavor follows suit with a bit to much of the sweetness and boooziness. the mouthfeel is to thick and sweet. overall the beer is still deliscious

Pours a dark mahogany with a good tan head. Bubbly foam and some spotty lacing. The nose brings strong bourbon with oak and vanilla. Some candied pineapple and light cherry as well. Great integration with dark fruits and a bit of sherry. Cherry and coconut come through especially as it warms. Medium body with low carbonation. No boozy; chewy and delicious. Incredible.

bottle... damn you top 100, and damn rb for not allowing me to tick this way back when I had this originally... I was quite impressed with this beer, its better than Coton when Coton first came, but I would say they are both similar at this point... super smooth aroma and taste, the barrel aging does wonders... this is a great beer worth getting

a - Pours a reddish mahogany brown color with one inch of off white head and low carbonation evident. Looks pretty good, exactly like what I remember the normal base Cuir looking like.

s - Smells of bourbon, vanilla, oak, sweet dark fruits, raisins, and caramel malts. Ton of bourbon but the sweetness comes through as well. Great nose.

t - Tastes of vanilla, bourbon, oak, caramel malts, sweet dark fruits, and liquor. More vanilla here than the nose, which I like a lot, and stilla ton of bourbon. Once again, very nice.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Smooth and just a tiny bit hot, but considering the barrel aging and ABV it isn't bad at all. Scarily easy going down.

o - Overall I thought this was an awesome barrel aged old ale, and thought it was a TON better than the base Cuir. I found it the tiniest bit hot, but I liked that, and think it must be close to its peak already. A ton of bourbon and vanilla in the nose and taste, which I always love. Huge fan of this one and looking to the future variations; would love to get a bottle and have again.

At the time of this review, this is the #3 top Old Ale on the beeradvocate.com Top Beers - Old Ale list. Additionally it is the #2 beer on the Top Beers - New and the #79 beer on the Top Beers - United States, this will be on the top 100 soon, it is that good. Served in a Bruery tulip because I can.

Beer is mildly hazy and brown, dark brown but not black, thin off white head of small bubbles, low carbonation but decent retention, minimal lacing, looks fine.

Aroma is wow, bourbon, sweetness, candy, strength, vanilla, alcohol but not boozy. Smells awesome.

These barrel aged anniversary beers keep getting better and better. Seriously. I love this beer. Medium bodied, a little thin on the back, but the flavors are liquor, oak, vanilla, sweet candy, caramel, it all plays together so well, it is deserving of this praise.

On a side note, you need a blow torch to get through the wax.

The beer is chestnut brown with an oily, tan head. The beer looks viscous. The head settles to an eighth inch or so and holds, leaving a thick sheet of lacing that gently cascades down the sides of the glass.

The aroma is fabulous. A huge blast of bourbon and vanilla, with some sweet malts, toffee, caramel, booze, and oak. Sublime.

The taste is equally fabulous. Delicious vanilla and bourbon flavors take center stage. Just effortless to drink. I could imagine finishing the bottle solo.

Silky smooth feel. It's shocking that this beer is 14.5% abv, as it certainly doesn't come off as hot in any way.

Overall, stellar. Highly recommended.
