The Beers of California

#31

On tap at the Bruery

A: Deep raspberry red with minimal foam and lace

S: Acetic acid sourness mixed with sweet berry syrup. Funky with a raspberry sweetness.

T: This brew follows the nose offering a raspberry vinaigrette funky sweetness. The palate has more fruit sweetness than tart bite. No significant malt presence. The astringency builds as the beer warms. A great use of sweet sour combination topped off with a nice lively bite.

M: Syrupy linger with a somwhat thin body and moderate carbonation.

O: A decent sour with good berry sweetness and some interesting acetic acid bite. A Razzmatazz like sugary tartness brings out the kid in every beer drinker although this brew can use more tart astringency, funk, and complexity to balance the fruit sweetness.

On Tap

Woodshop Classix
Anaheim, CA

Deep ruby and pink with a thin, bubbling light pink head. Dots of lacing down the glass.

Bright, ripe raspberries and a slight tartness to sting the nose but mainly just smells like blended raspberries, which do happen to smell nice.

Sweet, ripe raspberries dominate the flavor, along with a mild tartness, some other bright citrus hint, but never fully appear. A delicious, carbonated, raspberry drink.

Thin to medium mouthfeel, though I wish it was more carbonated.

A delicious raspberry wild, though I wish it had more tartness to balance against the fresh raspberry flavors.

Cool pink and purple color, looks regal. Nice framboise type aroma.

Rad tartness. This is what I was hoping for w/ NG Raspberry tart, but this one actually lives up to that beers expectations/reputation. This one is actually tart and sour. More tart than framboise de amarosa even. Really straightforward: raspberry fruit, lemon sourness.

Light body with big raspberry and tart mouthfeel. Very easy and enjoyable. After rose de gambrinus, maybe double framboise de amarosa, this beer owes no apologies to anything with raspberries in it.

Berazzled like its name, is a raspberry, bright pinkish-red color and a strong, sour tart bite to it. I loved it because... I love sours but was almost a little too tart. Would go perfect with dessert. Not one of my favorites but pretty close. A hint of wine flavor and very fruity.

On-tap at Tony's Darts Away; served in a snifter; reviewed from brief notes:

Ruby liquid with a faint cherry-blossom head. Poor retention and clarity but knock-out color none the less.

Rosewater, raspberries and mild funk fill the nose.

Bracing tartness, mild brett. notes (pepper and "horse blanket"), and a vanishing sweetness lead into the bright dry finish.

Light bodied, but not thin...decent carbonation, despite the lack of head.

Lacks some complexity as I suspect the beer is fairly young and the base beer was likely fermented with a fairly neutral ale yeast - a very good and refreshing sour none-the-less.

on tap at Mohawk Bend, and it's been around LA a lot lately, which makes me think there's either a new batch or they saved a bunch for Valentine's Day...

A - bright, light red, almost pink with a small off white head that disappears quickly and leaves little trace. Love that color. Tiny bubbles constantly stream towards the top of the glass.

S - fresh raspberries up front, but I'd say the dominant smell is tartness and a bit of acidity.

T - The best word to describe this flavor is bright. The raspberries really jump out, and then there's a nice hit of sourness and acidity. It sounds one-dimensional, and it might be a little too much like a raspberry juice squeeze for some, but I loved it. Really great flavor.

M - lots of carbonation leaves it feeling prickly on the tongue, and overall. Very crisp and refreshing.

O - yet another awesome beer from the Bruery, and I especially admire their sour program. I'd put this up there with the likes of MA and ISO:FT, though definitely in a different sort of sour category. In fact, I think this is a pretty good approximation of a poor man's Rose de Gambrinus. Certainly it's no Cantiloon, but it's great all the same.
