Sampled March 2012
A steady pour into my Lost Abbey Teku glass produces an almost, three-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The head leaves a nicely layered, it a touch thin, lacing on the sides of my glass as I slowly work my way through a couple glasses of this beer. The beer is a bright amber hue that shows a brilliantly clear, dark gold / copper color when held up to the light. The aroma has a solid biscuit, or sweet brown grain cracker like maltiness to it that is accentuated by a richly toasted character that seems oak derived, but seems to escape from overly woody notes. The effervescent carries bright citrus notes to the nose that is noticeable after the toasted / malty notes. There seems to be a fair amount going on in the nose here with other notes reminiscent of ginger, perhaps a hint of juniper, a light turpene spice character that reminds me of clove or cardamom (though this last only faintly), perhaps a hint of earthy coriander and lots of pale malt cracker character once you really start to dig into the aroma.

Quite effervescent, almost foamy, as it first hits my mouth, and this despite sitting ten minutes in my glass. The beer is quite dry, but some warming alcohol seems to add some sweetness and there is also a soft citrus character that keeps this from being bone dry. The finish has a light spiciness and astringency to it that seems oak derived, but the alcohol also adds some piquancy. The rich, toasted maltiness that is in the nose is also here in the flavor but at a much reduced level; it focuses more on the cracker side of things rather than the more biscuit like character that was found in the aroma. The body is quite light, especially when you consider the strength; it doesn’t stop being a sipping beer though as the alcohol and oak add a heat to the finish that keeps me from wanting to quaff this thing (which is certainly a good thing given the strength). The spiciness is quite a bit muted as compared to the aroma, instead there is a general, floral spiciness to the flavor that can be a bit peppery

I feel like this could use a touch more residual body, at times it can seem a touch too thin, not really from a body standpoint, but that dryness seems to mute a bunch of the spice and malt character that would otherwise be in the flavor. Still this is an enjoyable beer as is, but it seems like it could be quite a bit better without letting the yeast chomp through this quite as much (though it definitely should remain on the dry side).

was looking for something interesting to drink tonight and this one called my name. enjoyed from a bruery tulip.

a - brew poured a fairly attractive orange with yellow highlights. there was a big foamy and surprisingly creamy head. looks classic belgian belgian. the brew is transparent and has that great lively champagne like steady bubbling. looks really great! reminds me of an ommegang. thick creamy lacing clings to the glass.

s - banana, clove, vanilla, some soft spicing. strong alcoholic heat that gives it an almost fermented apple juice smell.

t - fermented apple juice indeed. classic BSPA flavoring is there with clove and banana, but the spicing and citrus and oak seem to impart more of a juice like vibe.

m - not as creamy as it looks, a bit fizzy but fairly thirst quenching.

o - overall this one was pretty good. has some elements to the look that are perfect to style and the overall flavor profile and nose ends up feeling like fermented apple juice. it was surprisingly quenching.
