Black Tuesday with hazelnuts. Bottle into a tulip. Note: the wax smells like hazelnuts. Awesome.

The brown of melted dark chocolate, opaque everywhere save the very edges, where its a lighter cherry-red. Thin head of off-white.

SWEET! Chocolate syrup, boysenberry, hazelnuts, vanilla, toasted oak, alcohol. Beautiful.

Better than Black Tuesday. Syrupy chocolate, hazelnuts, vanilla, a little oak, toffee. Extremely rich, very sweet.

Very spicy on the tongue. That alcohol doesn't mess around. Syrupy medium body, thick and heavy. Very mild, tingly carbonation, though the alcohol adds something.

Certainly not for the tepid or uninitiated, the bigness of this barley-type elixir seems to trump that even of stout, in favor of deep savory flavors, wonderfully oxidized taste, and a lavish texture.

Its sheer blackness is only impeded by its chalky cocoa haze, casting a brownish depth. Decadent aromas of port and sherry wrap around flavors of chocolate fudge, espresso, cashew and blackstrap molasses. Early sweetness fare similarly as its tawny liquor clings to the mouth like silk.

Its full toasted sweetness is taste and felt on the middle palate while tangy alcohol reinforce the taste of fortified brandy, grape and plum, leather and oak. All the while, a foundation of cake batter and toasted soft nuts provide a savory earthiness that's stern and unyielding.

Its incredible oily body is viscous, dense and indefinite in its linger. While strong vinous and rum alcohols thin the body slightly, a granular texture of silt seem to rise from a cocoa powder base and gives the stout a bit of grit.

750mL bottle into a snifter
Vintage 2013

BA review #550, here's to milestones!

A big thanks to NHbeerguy for sending this over in a trade!

A: Pours a very dark brown nearly black, opaque with less than 1/2 a fingers width of tan colored head. Head is fizzy and dissipates down almost immediately. Leaves effectively zero lacing, but some nice alcohol legs. Looks like a cola.

S: Very sweet, with dark fruits and syrup sugary sweetness. Accompanying the sweetness is a ethanol booze and a big charred oak bourbon character. Subtle cocoa and bourbony vanilla. I dont get much hazelnut at all, and probably wouldn't have even noticed it if I didnt know it was brewed with them. Aroma seems a bit boozier than I remember from BT and CR.

T: A big, decadent sweetness is the first thing I get; dark fruits, cocoa,
and syrupy sugar. This is balanced out but some really great roasty and bourbon barrel notes. Theres an herbaceous component and boozy ethanol. Like the nose, I dont get much hazelnut at all, although it starts to come out a bit as the beer warms towards room temperature. Great balance of sweetness, booze, and roasty. Excellent.

M/D: Mouthfeel is very smooth and somewhat chewy, but a bit syrupy. ABV is certainly noticeable but is a welcomed and necessary component to balance out the sweet. Carbonation is very low, which is appropriate. Like most of the huge ABV Bruery beers this one is dangerously drinkable.

O: Excellent beer. Not that different from BT IMO though, and I wish the hazelnut characters were more prominent. Out of BT, CR, and GM, I think CR is still my favorite. That being said, this a wonderful beer. Highly recommend. 4.5
