Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with beachwood and cherrywood smoked malt, and aged in rye whiskey barrels, Smoking Wood is a delicious demonstration of what wood has to offer when it comes to beer. This imperial smoked porter is brewed with a hefty amount of rye malt, contributing to a full body and light spiciness. Toasty oak, caramel and vanilla flavors balance the smokiness, contributing to an intense yet refined flavor profile.

750ml bottle, 2012 vintage

A: Pours nearly pitch black with two fingers of dense light brown head. Retention is very good.

S: Rye whiskey is quite strong in this one, behind that I get quite a bit of smoke balanced by dark chocolate and caramel sweetness. The proportions of the flavors are great in this one - all are strong, but none overpowers the others.

T: Rye whiskey is strong, just like the nose. Caramel sweetness is a bit stronger in the flavor than it was the aroma. Dark chocolate is still there and quite pleasant, but it's a bit in the background. The smoke is a bit strong in this one for me, particularly in the aftertaste. The smoke is a bit hard to place, though. It's a bit meaty, but a bit fruity as well. Apparently this is brewed with Beechwood and Cherrywood smoked malts - that makes sense. Again, the flavors are very strong in this beer. This seems like a trend with the Bruery.

M: Medium to thick with a nice carbonation.

O: Very good, but I find myself wanting this beer to be a bit less smoky and a bit less sweet.

750ml, 2012 vintage
The Bruery tulip

A: Pours deep dark black color. No light getting through there. Initially there was a thin layer of slightly tan head. Stuck around for a little while. Getting some alcohol feet on this boozy beer for sure.

S: Smoked meats. Burnt wood. Roasted malts. Some chocolate. Hard to dig in and get that rye spice with all the rest of that going on.

T: Liked bourbon more. Lots of smoke more than the other. Tons of smoke. Bacon. Dark campfire flavor. Some dark chocolate. Long flavors.

M: Full bodied.
