750ml bottle poured into a Brooklyn snifter.

A - Pours black in color with a thick finger plus of frothy mocha colored foam with good staying power. Head falls over a couple minutes nad leaves behind some light, foamy lacing.

S - Interesting aroma - lots of caramel and molasses, tons of maltose - quite sweet overall on the nose. Some spicy rye, hints of vanilla, and touches of burnt, acrid malt.

T - Mildly tart up front, followed by burnt malt, some charcoal and a light hoppy bitterness. Molasses and dark caramel.

M - Medium body, light astringency and tartness, burnt character, spicy rye. Carbonation is lowish mid-level with a slight tingle to it.

O - Ehhh...kinda non-descript. One of those beers that is just kinda "there". Doesn't impress, doesn't really turn me off - just nothing special. Malty and sweet, seems maybe a bit underattenuated. Lots of worty, unfermented maltose aroma and flavors found here. Not one of my favorite Bruery offerings.

Served in a Boulevard tulip glass.

I'm pretty sure I remember some crappy knock-off cereal from back in the day either being named or having a mascot named "Chocosaurus"... Regardless, this stuff pours a deep black-brown topped by a finger or so of khaki foam. The nose comprises mild roasted malts, chocolate powder, toasted rye bread, and a touch of what seems like clove. The taste brings in more of the same, with no clove and a bit of really light dark fruits hiding, almost cowering in the background. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a nice little beer, though I think I was expecting a bit more chocolate flavors. That said, it's still pretty good.

thanks heaps to drlovemd87 for bringing this rare beauty over. a beer I thought I may never get to try, fortunately his impressive cellar unearthed this for us to get into. it pours a flat black color, lacking luster like some of these have, a dead giveaway that cocoa nibs are rocking this one out. its got a nice head, grayish tan in color, and the beer appears quite dense. the nose is unsweetened dark chocolate right out of the gate, with the vanilla additions being really subtle, and the roast of the barley not being as heavy as it looks like it should be. the rye malt is very intense, not quite out of balance, but very forward. very little bitterness to the taste too, although to cocoa gives it an earthy edge. the rye makes a contribution of front of tongue spice and body. the weirdest part of this beer for me is that its a lager. the yeast tries to crisp up and clean up a complexity of flavors that doesn't want to budge, and I think its lost a little in the process. I would like to see this made again as an ale, and then have the two side by side to compare but I think its a little disjointed as it stands because of the lager yeast. still, a very unique and enjoyable brew, with a drying finish uncommon in a beer this dark. the alcohol is minimal, and the body is big but not too big, they rye does a nice job with that. id love to see this made again, but if it isn't, I am grateful for the opportunity to drink with some great folks.

Dark brown body with a tan head that dissipates to a ring. Not much lacing.

Nose of chocolate and rye, some prunes/dark stone fruit.

Tastes of dark chocolate and rye, with a little prune/dark stone fruit and a hint of cola. Not much hops come through in this. Sort of two dimensional.

Body is light and carbonation is light as well.

A good drinking beer, but some more complexity would make it more interesting.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Lost Abbey chalice.

A- pours a dark brown, near black, with a 3" beige head. Big clumps of lacing cling to the glass.

S- chocolate, dark fruits, and spices.

T- dark fruits with some chocolate mixed in. So,e light spice and nice roast from the rye.

M- medium body and carbonation. Very easy drinking with slight acidity.

O- very tasty for a lager. Not spectacular but unique beer with nice flavor.

Pours dark black with a dense khaki head that settles to a thin cap, leaving a few spots of lacing. Moderate aromas of chocolate, vanilla beans, a touch of grainy rye, and some clean Lager yeast. Not bad. Lots more chocolate in the taste, almost a chocolate syrup thing going on, along with more vanilla bean. Chocosaurus indeed. Mouthfeel is smooth, with a medium-full body and ample carbonation. Pretty tasty beer, really digging the chcocolate.

Notes from tasting on 11/16. thanks to jon for sharing this surprisingly tasty brew. enjoyed from a brewery snifter.

a - poured a watery black with a thin greyish milky head. swirling the glass brings things back to life.

s - some smoke, some rye, and some cocoa and vanilla...the rye is there too and quite nice.

t - wow, this is pretty good. nice chocolate and rye mix. very impressive.

m - super smooth. a bit watery. goes down unbelievably easy.

o - overall this is really nice. a very big surprise. super easy drinker. lager with rye and cocoa nibs really works. extremely enjoyable and delicious.

Served from bottle into a Bruery tulip (proper!). Poured black with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, vanilla, dark chocolate, spice, rye, and milk chocolate. The flavor was of sweet malt, vanilla, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, smoke, and subtle spice. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I really like how much was going on in this one while still maintaining a fairly nice balanced aroma and flavor. It wasn’t the best I have experienced in my ticking career, but definitely up there. This fact made it quite easy to drink and fairly enjoyable. No sign of booze anywhere at all. Definitely a must try if you get the opportunity.

750ml bottle shared with friends and poured into a bruery snifter. The brew appears black with brown clarity around the edges. A light tan head a finger strong leaves stringy fingers of lace on the glass.

The smell starts off with licorice and roast. Some fruit and citrus seem a bit out of place when mixed with hints of chocolate and fruity rye and alcohol esters. A bit of mild must makes itself known across the back.

The taste is fruity rye malt mixed with alcohol esters. Roasty grain, licorice and chocolate. A mild hint of coffee and some citrus hops are there but dont seem to fit in well. The vanilla is tame with roast and earth into the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation. Fairly easy drinking swarzbier but the addition of rye made it fruity in a strange way. The advertised additions made this one sound good but the final product isnt great. I had this brew 4 months ago and really liked it. Relatively speaking I wish I would have drank more of this then, now the vanilla seems to be tapering off and fruity quality taking its place.

Collaboration, and on sale at Provisions.

Pours murky dark brown, not quite black. No light passes through the liquid, except for some golden brown on the edges. A huge mocha head slowly dissipated to leave some fine lacing.

Smells of bitter chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and very roasty.

Tastes of the rye tang to start, some bitter nibs, and a touch of the vanilla on the finish. A lingering rye flavor is left in the mouth for some time.

Texture starts out silky, almost medium bodied. The medium bodied brew gets a little tougher as it progresses though. Still a nice beer to drink.

While I liked this beer, I think that making it all sweet, or all bitter would have been more in balance. Perhaps there is one ingredient too many?

Notes from May 2012

A - Pours black with almost three fingers of tan head. Head has excellent retention and leaves nice lacing.

S - Interesting combination of rye spiciness, vanilla and cocoa. Lots of lager yeast aroma. A bit of toasted grain and smoky aroma as well. Pretty good.

T - All the elements of the aroma are in the taste as well, they just don't seem to meld together very harmoniously. Though the vanilla is actually quite nice.

M - Medium/light mouthfeel with some drying from the cocoa. Somewhat sweet as well.

O - Decent, but not very harmonious.

A: Pours a completely opaque black with a huge mocha head that takes awhile to settle. There is a nice rocky layer across the top of the beer that leaves minimal lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is a mix of sweet raisin bread, yeast, spice, caramel, and bitter chocolate. It's a weird mix with the major scents being the bready and stone fruit notes.

T: It starts out with sweet malt, raisin bread, and plums. There is a blast of spice in the middle. I get a touch of bittersweet chocolate. The finish is sweet, and slightly spicy.

M: Medium bodied beer. I has a good amount of heft to it. The flavors are a bit muted, and it is a really heavy on the soaked bread quality.

O: This beer is pretty interesting, but it's not something I really need to drink again.

Tulip glass.

A: Pours an impenetrable dark brown with a finger or so of medium brown, nice looking head. Some lacing and pretty good retention.

S: Roasty, dark chocolate and some baker's spices, with faint vanilla bean. Smells like a pretty tasty stout.

T: Very clean taste... interesting. Chocolate and roast flavors dominate. A little of the lager shows through, imparting kind of an odd taste.

M: Medium body and light carbonation. Lots of flavor without the typical thickness.

O: Like a clean, tasty stout. Stout stout stout. Kind of interesting but a little fatiguing over the course of a pint.

Bottle at Alex's Birthday Bash.

A - Pours a darker brown color, tan head, thin ring, wisps.

S - Chocolate, malts, and oak. Pretty straight-forward here.

T - Chocolate, toasted bread, oak, malts, light rye. Alcohol is well-hidden and doesn't shine through all that much. Finish is creamy chocolate with some bready malts.

M - Medium body, good carbonation, creamy finish.

O - A nice mix of chocolate & rye, but not something I'd go for all that often. If I'm going to have a rye beer, I prefer hops with it and if I'm going to have a stout, I prefer more sweetness and booze. Something "different" but just an average beer.

Pours a solid black with a decent sized tan head that slowly dissipates to a cap on top. Smells of chocolate and pilsner malt with a slightly spicy edge to it. The aroma is fairly simple, but very pleasing. The flavor is not what I expected from the aroma. I get a solid punch of milk chocolate with almost too much vanilla and bit of a smokey edge with the spice coming off the rye as well as a bit of oxidation. Silky creamy mouthfeel with a solid medium on the body and a light level of carbonation. Very nice brew that threw me for a second but got a lot better as I eased into it.

750ml bottle.

Pours dark chocolate brown with a big creamy beige head that recedes very slowly leaving nice lacing.

Lots of chocolate malts in the nose. Bit of spicy rye though it's subtle and dominated by the roasty chocolate malts.

Taste is much spicier than the nose with a strong kick up front before the roasted malts and milk chocolate take over. The finish is smooth and tastes like liquid rye bread with milk chocolate.

Mouthfeel is smooth with the rye supporting the thick feel which is balanced by the lively carbonation.

As a fan of rye beers, this one doesn't disappoint. It's not overly complex but still tasty if you like chocolate and rye.

Poured out, mostly dark brown and black. Tan head, pretty nice looking. Aroma definitely delivered on the chocolate. Rye took a back seat.

Taste, ample carbonation keeps a beer full of flavor relatively light in the mouthfeel. Still plenty of chocolate, a hoppy zest and depth that may be the rye coming out in an unusual way compared to what I'm typically used to. No discernable lager yeast flavor to it, I think the chocolate and cocoa really covers up some of the rye/lager aspects of the beer, but in other ways, it still has a relatively thin body more akin to lagers. Vanilla smoothing things out.

This beer isn't going to be on anyone's must have list, but it is still solid nonetheless. Probably a nice beer on a mild summer day, I know on a warm spring day, it was worthy.

Bottle sampled at recent bottle share. Poured into 6 oz sampling glass, fridge cold and allowed to warm slightly.

Pours an opaque tan head with a dark body. Notes of sweet chocolate on the nose, hiding the roasted flavours that should be present. A surprising amount of booziness on both the nose and in the body, yet in the end oddly smooth. Light roasted notes in the body with light cocoa. flavours. The mouthfeel is disturbingly watery, and the beer in no way evidences the rye that was used in terms of flavour or viscosity. A little disappointing, though an enjoyable beer to start the night with.

Split two ways after a nice BBQ on 5.26.12.

A - Pours a dark-medium brown with a light tan head.

S - Malty and some chocolate, but subtle at first.

T - Chocolate and rye bread, duh. No sweetness at all.

D - Good carbonation and a medium body.

O - Nice chocolate flavors without being overly sweet or heavy. A nice night cap.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.

Appearance: This beer pours a dark brown color with some red when the light hits the beer. There is a half finger of off white head that fades to a ring around the pour.

Smell: The smell of this beer is pretty mild. I'm getting some roast along with a chocolate note.

Taste: Chocolate is the dominant flavor here, more like chocolate sauce than bitter dark chocolate. There is a very mild spice from the rye. Overall I would say that this beer is slightly watery, but not bad.

Mouthfeel: The body is just on the thin side of medium with prickly carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: This isn't a bad beer, but it's not particularly complex or super interesting. I don't necessarily need more in the future, but I won't mind drinking my other bottles.

Served in a Bruery tulip just because I can. Beer is black with a nice one finger tan head of small bubbles, lacing on the glass, moderate to low retention.

Aroma is a little weak, mildly chocolate, a little malt.

Beer is medium in body, a little bitter, nice chocolate bitterness on the end, a little sweet leadoff, a decent beer overall. I won't go out of my way to have another but it was a decent beer overall.

2012 Bottle poured in to Bruery tulip. Thanks to my Reserve Society Trustee BrewtifulMind for this one.

A - Dark black with one finger of creamy espresso coloured head that receded to a thin layer.

S - Spicy rye up front with hints of vanilla and milk chocolate in the background. Somewhat of a weak nose overall.

T - Big chocolate flavour up front that is fairly sweet but well balanced by the spicy rye malt base. The vanilla shows up in the finish. As I continue to drink this it becomes fairly sweet and the vanilla becomes more central. The rye plays off nicely with the big sweetness from the chocolate and vanilla.

M - Creamy and silky. Light carbonation.

Deep brown with a large tan head light and fluffy. Things hurting the appearance are thick chunky particulates roaming about.

Lovely aromas of chocolate, rye, vanilla, rustic breads, that clean carbonation like aroma of a lager. Light roast as well.

Very nice. Layered chocolate with vanilla and marshmallow. Rye spice and cinnamon bread. Some dark fruit flavors in the finish with moderate bitterness. Clean with fairly light carbonation. I like.

A- Nigh on perfect head development, great lacing, thick creamy head that has no imperfections in the least. Its dark soy sauce colored, and it has the lightly roasted bread color... like a perfectly toasted marshmellow.

S- Some vanilla edging, the rye spice is there for sure with the lager characteristics. That toasted bread and earthen, nutty brown sugar sweetness.... its what I expect from perfect brown ales. The cocoa nature is very very faint and it takes a long time for it to come out. This had to warm up a long, long time before I found the cocoa nibs melded with the vanilla. Too much effort for something advertised as so.

T- Opening nutty brown sugar and malted milk balls. The center is rye and bubblegum, rolls into a bitter grain husk, and the finish is spicy... just simple light sharpness that you imagine Italian seasonings would be without the herby/grassy nature. Nutty, and dirty finish.

M- Medium bodied, great carbonation... spot on actually. Flavors are full, are lingering throughout, and has a nice sharp alcoholic tinge around the latter half of the taste. Really gives you what your looking for in mouth feel at least.

Dark brown. Raises over an inch of dense, tan head in my tulip. Lots of carbonation evident in the liquid. Very mild aroma, lightly herbal and spicy, very slight chocolate. The taste is quite unique and interesting. It's got the chocolate and roast (but not burnt) flavors of a big stout, but without any sweetness and with a much lighter, drinkable body. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by this beer, definitely tastier than I expected.
