We've all come to know and love our 40% rye malt, barrel aged sour ale, Sour in the Rye. Now it's time to enjoy that very same beer, but with fresh kumquats added to the mix. This fruited sour reveals incredible notes of both bitterness from the citrus rind as well as an unmistakable tropical sweetness from macerating the entire fruit and adding it to barrels.

750 ml bottled 4/25/2013. Poured into a teku

Appearance: Pours a dark amber color with 2 fingers of an off white, fizzy head that dissipates quickly to a thick collar. Body is hazy with some fine sediment and moderate, to high visible carbonation.

Smell: Despite its age, theres still quite a bit of citrus character. Lemon, slight tropical note, some spicy rye and oak.

Taste: Citrus, green apple, mild lacto character, rye like spice and oak. Quite similar to the aroma. Sourness is high.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is high but not over the top. Finish leans toward the dry side.

Overall: Pretty good. Rye gives it some unique characteristics for a sour, and the citrus is a nice improvement to the regular SitR. Worth trying for sure, but no need to go crazy seeking it out.

Pours a dark golden haze, low carb. Beautiful citrus nose. Thin to medium bodied. Perfect balance of sour and citrusy flavor. None of that vinegar either. I can crush a bomber of this alone.

Received this beauty as part of a trade with BA Black_Rider. Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL bottle with "2013 edition" marked clearly on the label. Poured into a large New Belgium tulip glass.

Appearance (4.0) - Pours a dark ruddy orangish-brown hue that makes light passage difficult. Some haze is present, but I'd hesitate to call it murky. Atop the body sits a finger of off-white head, with a bit of a frothy look to it. Retention is fleeting, and it quickly fades away to reveal a healthy ringlet of foam around the edge of the glass and a bit of film intermittently placed across the surface of the liquid. No lacing is left behind to speak of.

Smell (4.0) - Smell is that of apple cider vinegar as well as some acidic citrus notes. Make no mistake, the story of this beer--like it's un-fruited cousin--is more about the Sour than it is the Rye. However, the addition of the kumquats makes for a nice juicy fruit overtone that wasn't present in the much drier-smelling standard SitR. In many ways, it reminds me more of stone fruit than it does of it's citrus brethren, at least in the aroma. There is still a recognizable amount of funk and some woody qualities from the barrel.

Taste (4.25) - It's hard not to again draw comparisons to regular Sour In The Rye. In this case, it retains the same acidic sour apple punch presents itself in the original, as well as a subtle spiciness from the rye malt. The funk that came through in the aroma is pushed aside by much more straightforward sour characteristics, but again, the kumquat comes to the rescue and provides some softer, juicier tones to play against the biting sourness of the bacteria. There is also some bitterness in the aftertaste that reminds me a bit of a dry-hopped sour.

Mouthfeel (4.25) - Medium-bodied and moderate carbonation, with a mostly dry finish and a slight pucker on the tastebuds.

Overall (4.25), the addition of the tiny citrus fruit does marvels for this beer, and makes it quite refreshing and a bit easier to drink more of than the non-fruited SitR. It certainly makes me curious to try more beers that utilize kumquat in the future.
