Sans Pagaie translates to “without a paddle” and is our take on the Belgian-style kriek, a sour blonde ale aged in barrels with cherries. The base beer has a subtle funk that melds gently with the fruit giving this beer flavors reminiscent of coconut, vanilla yogurt and of course, fresh cherries. A complex beer, perfect for a warm California day in the park with a slice of home made chocolate cake.

A: Pours a hazed/cloudy red color. A pinkish head rises to about two fingers, but recedes in a second. Light lace. Looks really spritzy and Champagne like.
S: A tart acidic funk up front a center. Beautiful cherry tartness mingles perfectly with the Brett. Light wood and vanilla aromas. Excellent, and spot on.
T: The acidity is pungent and assertive up front. The fresh, tart, acidic fleshy cherries are amazing. Some vanilla mingles in the middle. Mixed with the Bretty funk and light wood flavors. Pretty much spot on for a straight up fresh Lambic Kriek.
M/D: A light body that is perfectly effervescent. Beautifully crisp, and finishes dry and refreshing. So easy to drink, the tartness pulls in the cheeks and I want to keep coming back for more.

Damn if this is not a traditional Lambic Kriek. Incredibly well done, and spot on for the style. I was really impressed with this, and highly recommended. Exactly why I put up with the lows of the Bruery. Because the highs are this good. (1,012 characters)

2014 Preservation Society bottle.

A - Cloudy pinkish orange, super effervescent (it was a gusher). No head or lacing, fair enough for the style.

S - You can smell the tartness. Assertive notes of sour cherry and background of light brett funk.

T - Extremely sour. Mouth puckering, forehead sweating, eye twitching sour. Big cherry notes, hints of cherry pie brett notes. Hard to discern much else.

M - Medium body, slightly sticky.

O - Great AWA, not as subtle and nuanced as excellent kriek, too heavy handed in the tartness. Still delicious and a treat. (560 characters)

Bottled on 04/17/14.

Pours a cloudy pink. The one inch white head fades to a thin ring on top and leaves spotty lace. The appearance is reminiscent of pink grapefruit juice cocktail.

The smell is of vinegar, barnyard funk, cherry skins and a faint unpleasant sulfur aroma.

The taste is of tart unripe cherries, white grapes and vinegar tartness.

The texture is light bodied with high carbonation.

Excluding the aroma, this offering hits the target on all aspects: Light and refreshing with tart cherry flavors, only the faint sulfuric aroma prevents this from being a top-notch sour. (591 characters)

On tap at Barcade in Phily for Beer Week

Appearance: A really unique and cloudy pink color. Almost no head and no lacing.

Smell: Subtle, but still very funky and sour. Mostly cherry.

Taste: My friend Patrick was drinking a Supplication, and this was more mouth-puckering. Very sour, with lots of vinegar, tons of sour cherry, and some oak and vanilla. The sourness almost over-powers the different tasting notes.

Mouthfeel: Very sour, with a very long finish. Mouth puckering and delicious.

Overall: An amazing Belgian sour. Lots going on, but all tied together by extremely sour cherry notes. Would definitely buy again. Very good. (637 characters)

Served from a 750ml bootle into a Crooked Stave tulip. Cellar temps.

Appearance- Upon opening the bottle, I notice a strange looking filament around the rim of the bottle under the cap. Kind of pinkish/grey. I might have been concerned if it wasn't a sour, but whatever.
Almost clear, but still hazy pinkish/red with quick one finger bubbly white head that didn't leave any trace.

Smell- Light cherry, citrus, mild vinegar, belgian bready yeast. fruit forward and very Belgianesque.

Taste-Cherry is totally there folowed by lots of lemon and grapefruit. Wheaty and yeasty, but not funky. Very sour. In the realm of an aged Rueze, Beat, or Mother Funker. As it warms the cherry is super prevalent.

Mouthfeel- Highly carbonated and very sour. Mouth puckering. Light in body though.

Overall- Another very sour sour from the Bruery. Nice fruit notes and Belgian characteristics. A pleasant drink overall. (907 characters)

750 mL bottle acquired through the Hoarders Society. Bottled 3/22/13. Served in a Bruery snifter.

Pours a strange, opaque, murky pink peach-like hue, similar to grapefruit juice, with a rapidly fading pale head. Zero retention and no lace.

Smells tart with vinegar, funk, yeast and sour fruit.

Flavors are sour but somehow rounded. Tart cherry, smooth oak, apple cider vinegar, acidic sour lemon, wet hay, funk and a dry yeasty character.

Light to medium body with mildly tingling carbonation. Near puckering finish with sour cherry and oak.

Pretty good stuff. The tart cherry complements and smooths out the sour. Not something I'll hunt for more of but nice enough that II enjoyed this try. (701 characters)

750ml bottle brewed in march 2013 into a New Glarus flute glass. about a year old.

pours a very interesting and attractive murky red that i really dig. smell is very acidic with a tad of cherries... taste is lip puckeringly sour with the vinegar and acidic notes. cherries are present but have faded noticeably in a year. as it warmed up it became a tad less acidic. mild body with mild carbonation.

overall a lip puckering sour. i dig those but maybe not for everyone. (471 characters)

Teeters on the line of good and great in my opinion but easily buyable again and very enjoyable to sip.
Pours almost the color if pink grapefruit juice with no head to speak of. Smell has sour cherry, oak and a hint of vanilla. Taste a nice mix of tart and bittersweet but not overpowering with mostly cherry and acidic fruit notes. (333 characters)

A-light red orange color with a decent white head and a little lacing

S-,sour cherries, oak, funk, little vinegar

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, dry and puckering

Cloudy blonde body with nice white head in the glass. I'm not picking up much from the nose and certainly not cherries. Still no cherries to speak of in this one. It's mouth scorchingly tart/sour. At points it is warhead tart, and other times it is just sour. It's not balanced and it has no fruit in the party. This one is just a misfire for me. (346 characters)

2013 Edition. 5.4% ABV

Appearance: Pours a murky orange color with hints of red. What little head form upon pouring dissipates instantly to the thinnest of collars around the edge of the glass. Body is extremely hazy, almost to the point of being opaque.

Smell: Big barnyard funk, wet hay, mild cherry aroma, acidic sourness, tart citrus, slightly cheesy.

Taste: Nice acidic sourness right upfront along with lots of sour pie cherries, which was a bit surprising given the somewhat muted cherry presence in the aroma. That's followed by some funk, oak, hay, lemon and lactic acid. Sourness is low to medium.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with lower levels of prickly carbonation. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, almost watery.

Overall: Another good beer from the Bruery. It's a nice homage to the traditional Belgian krieks though doesn't reach the same level as the good ones. Given the it's a brewery only release, I'm glad I got to try it, but I doubt I'll be going out of my way to track it down again. (1,012 characters)

Pours a cloudy pink with almost no head. Nose is super tart acidic funk with some fruit notes. Mouthfeel is basically flat but held up by the sharp sourness. Taste is very sour, some oak barrel, fruity, sweet. Finish is sour followed by nice fruit notes of cherry, passionfruit, grapefruit. Very sour beer. I enjoyed it! (320 characters)

A: Pale pink, syrupy and a bit thin bodied.

S: Yeesh, solventy character that reminds me very much of nail polish remover. Its hard to pinpoint where the lactic acidity ends and the harsh acetic stuff begins, I can imagine that the base beer was better at some point.

T: Taste is nicer than the aroma, but the solventy nature of the nose really ruined this beer for me.

M: Medium syrupy with surprisingly weak carbonation (425 characters)

A slight haze in a salmon body, just a short lived finger of foam fizzes out like a cola leaving no lace

S cherry, raspberries, some wood, a hint of burnt match, or better yet a struck match that didn't catch fire, very faint solvent and pear with a little vinegar

T the cherries tart, some black currents, no sulfur or solvent is an improvement over the nose, vinous notes and wood

M shes pretty sour, has some pucker to it but not turning my mouth inside-out, tangy with red fruit lingering

O decent beer but not mind blowing, quite sour but remains easy to drink

I'm not sure if I'd want to power back a bottle by myself but it worked well for out bottle share (750 characters)

Bright reddish color, spray of spotty white foam in the glass.
Cherry smell, clean and lactic, slightly sharp.

Slightly artificial with a cherry ludens cough drop aftertaste, sharp and super sour up front with biting acidity. Very spritzy and dry, fully attenuated. The sharpness is a little much and more sour just for sour sake, adding little dimension to the beer itself. This was nice to try, but a little one-dimensional. (491 characters)

A - pours an opaque peach/pink color with almost no head or retention.

S - tons of cherry and lemon, can tell I will be puckering. Vanilla pokes through along with more lemonyness

T - tons of cherry, some lemon, almost a walnutty type oakyness, vanilla, wonderfully/intensely sour.

We crack a 750mL of the 2013 stock, pouring a brew of sunset orange, with hues of rosy pinks when held away from the light, into our shiny new Ommegang Game of Thrones tulips. It puts forth a two finger head of fizzy white foam, but the majority of this bubbles away within seconds. What’s left is a loose, oily-looking film across the top of the liquid. A haze cuts clarity, but no sediment is found. Carbonation appears to be light but diffuse. The aroma is tart and fruity as expected, giving notes of white wine grape skins, thick oak, mossy maple bark, easy pale malt chalkiness, rich dark cherry flesh, citric tartness, cider vinegar, light booziness, distant popcorn kernels, souring wild yeastiness, plastic phenols and vinyl bite, lemon juiciness, cloth, and warmed honey. Our first impression is that that has got to be one of the most puckering, lip-smacking wilds we’ve ever tasted!! As we sip, the taste explodes with souring, Bretty yeast, tall green grassiness, flashes of grape soda/pop, chalked pales, coiny metallics, lavender and honeysuckle florals, oaky diacetyls, the tartest candy sugars, red grapey and cherry sweetness, lemon juiciness, and resinous fruit vine. Mixing to the peak is continue woody warmth and sourness akin to a dry red wine, along with lactics and vinegars, grainy pales, chokecherries, juicy bite of wild yeast, aloe, dried straw, fermented cherry and strawberry skins, and acetone. The end washes with thick cherry fruitiness, under ripe nectarine pit grittiness, Pez and Warhead candy puck, and more of the same biting, tart cherry, lemony, vinegar, oak, and winey glory. The aftertaste breathes of light booze, lactic creaminess, warm diacetyls, huge oakiness, waxed parchment, tart cherry and peach fruitiness, tinny metallics, yeasty sourness, raw strawberry jam, and general grassy twang. The body is medium, and the carbonation strikes a high prickle. Each sip gives nice slurp and smack, but with decidedly less creaminess or froth to the lip. Finishing pop, helped along by the intense fruity and yeast tannic pucker, is supreme. The mouth is initially coated with an oily, resinous film, but the tongue squeaks clean with drying chalkiness. The abv is appropriate, and although this brew is a sipper, it drinks very well.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its taste. Actually, we found it pretty challenging to dissect through the thick blanket of sourness that cloaks each sip of this guy!! We were going to sit on it for a bit longer, but a friend suggested we hit it now, as its tartness would only enhance, so we decided to give it a go, and MAN, this is one of the most puckering, souring, wild things we’ve ever had the pleasure of sipping. After taking those first few sips to get a handle on what exactly you’re dealing with here, it starts to go down extremely smoothly, while retaining punch at every turn. Like many within the style, it is brewer with fruit, and while the cherry is certainly present, if we were told this was brewed with raspberries, or blackberries, or the likes, we wouldn’t contest it. That said, it is wonderfully executed from head to toe, and has that bright personality that only The Bruery can conjure. (3,220 characters)

A- Cloudy bright ruby/orange one finger head.

S-Woah. Lots of funk. Cherries and oak. And more funk.

T-Rather sour, very funky. Lots of cherries, some oak. Might be too sweet though.

M-Lighter to medium in body, tad watery, slight carbonation.

O-The balance was a tad off and being watery. Fix those and this beer would be amazing. (335 characters)

Got two bottles through a friend in the Bruery Reserve Society.

Pink, fluffy, high carbonation....very bright colored sour.

By far the most sour "sour" I have had, but in a good way. Wasn't overpowering, just slightly lip puckering.

I loved it, and bought a few more bottles later on. I have them cellared for drinking in a few years.

Poured into a tulip and enjoyed on 8/4/13. No date on the bottle. Bottle obtained via trade so I can't give an MSRP.

A: Grapefruit juice. The beer pours a ruby-tinged light brown color that reminds me of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice (not the ruby red concentrate stuff). It's actually probably the most uniquely colored beer I've enjoyed this year. Not quite brown...not quite red....quite distinct. No head and minimal lacing are apparent.

S: Ahhhh....the smell of a good sour beer. Deep sour green apple and citrus fruit notes with a little bit of Brett funkiness. The nose is not overwhelming as some of the best sours....it's quite subdued. A little bit of oak - not much. Unfortunately, I dont get much in the way of cherries in the nose.

T: There are those cherries! Initial taste is of sour cherries and it hits you - hard - on the back of the tongue. Subsequent oak and toffee notes from the barrels and malt are apparent later in the sip and provide a respectable backbone to the sour cherries. There is some funkiness there, but you have to search for it. On a scale of 1:10 of sourness, this ranks up there - I'd say a 8. It's definitely more sour than I expected.

M: Slightly undercarbed for my taste in sours. I'd bump up the carbonation by 5% or so. Other than that, mouthfeel is dry sour excellence.

O: I'm overall quite pleased with this beer. I think this ranks up there with SiTR as the best sour that Bruery produces. It's mouth-puckering, sour goodness. That being said, I found this beer slightly too one-note and slightly too sour for my taste buds. It's just not as complex as some of my favorite sours on the market, probably because of the massive amount of sour cherries used. I definitely recommend tasting this if you have an opportunity, but I wouldn't trade a whale for it or anything. (1,825 characters)

750 mL bottle on trade (thanks, John Serra!), unknown bottling date (2013 vintage), poured into my Bruery "Rue the Day" glass from Urge Gastropub, drank 8/3/13 over an hour.

A: 2/3 - ruby red coloration, minimal clarity (cannot see through), carbonation very quickly dissipates into almost nothing , no alcohol legs

S: 10/12 - lots of pungent sour (especially vinegar) notes admixed with cherries and other barnyard qualities

T: 19/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's a strong sourness - vinegar, sour cherries; in the middle of the mouth, some of the vinous qualities start to rear their head probably from the oak aging - tannins and cherries; the alcohol is present but certainly not overwhelming in the taste; I taste alcohol but no malt to speak of

M: 3/5 - moderate bodied but undercarbonated for an American wild ale; I had drank Russian River's Supplication earlier tonight, and the sourness lingers too long with this one; however, I mostly detracted points for the undercarbonation

O: 9/10 - another solid offering from The Bruery, which continues to emerge as one of my favorite American breweries; they nail sours better than any other American brewery to my palate and this is another must have for fans of American wild ales

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.

A: Very hazy, deep ruby grapefruit in color, with very little head and little to no visible carbonation. It's not exactly a pretty beer.

S: Sour, tart, vinegar, sour cherries, barnyard, wet grass, funky with hints of feet and vomit...in a good way.

T: Big flavor of sour fruits up front (cherry and raspberry), very tart, sour, vinegar. Mouth-drying with just a bit of wood dryness and tannins right before and after the swallow.

M: Medium body, moderate alcohol presence, low carbonation sensation but not quite flat.

O: This was pretty good. It lacks some of the depth of flavors that the best sour beers have, and I found it borderline too acidic for my taste. But overall quite enjoyable! (781 characters)

A: poured into a duvel tulip to a slightly hazed orange with a light red hue topped by a half inch of dense white head that is quick to fade to a small collar
S: smells of sourness, funk and some cherries
T: tastes of intense sourness, some cherry, a bit of funk and oak with a bit of vanilla and more sourness. swallow is some sour cherry flavor with a bit more oak and funk.
M: medium in the mouth with soft but adequate carbonation and a drying finish
O: A very well done sour with a nice fruit addition. Not a Kriek in name but it does have that flavor. (557 characters)

Poured into a standard tulip.

Appearance: (4.5)
Pours an extremely murky, cloudy salmon colored hue of pink, almost akin to ruby red grapefruit juice. A mere wisp of a half finger head forms and fizzles out completely in a matter of seconds; which is consistent with it's style. No lacing is left behind. I've never seen a beer quite like this. It really is a milky pink.

Aroma: (4.75)
As soon as you raise the beer to your nose, it is immediately clear that this is a very sour brew; tons of bright citric acidity bursts forth; fresh lemon juice and a familiar tart cherry pie scent that is found in a great number of sour beers. There is however a gigantic and very vibrant, fresh cherry aroma underneath the standard cherry pie character. The lemons and cherries are encased by a lovely, funky barnyardness from Brettanomyces; mostly light leather and slightly musty, wet hay. The amazingly, the fresh cherries really cut through the funk from the Brettanomyces and souring bacteria. As the beer warms, a subtle, but firm vanilla presence becomes more apparent from the oak barrels.

Taste: (4.75)
Tart and acidic lemon juice your palate immediately, quickly follow by a mild Brett funkiness; more the musty, wet hay and leather that is found in the aroma. Just before the very dry finish, something unexpected happens; your palate is completely overtaken by waves of fresh cherries. The cherries are so in your face, you would have sworn you were chewing actual bing cherries. The beer finishes really dry and pleasantly tart with lingering notes of cherries, and a creamy vanilla and light tannin character from the oak barrels. There is a faint, but distinct nuttiness in the finish that becomes more apparent as the beer warms that makes me think the Bruery added not only the cherry flesh in, but kept the pits intact as well.

Medium, creamy body with moderate to high carbonation

Another brilliant beer from The Bruery; They managed to really harness the sheer essence of cherry in this Kriek(as every Kriek should!) The beer is just sour enough to be refreshing but still leaves enough room on your palate for the cherry character to really shine. I'd recommend this any 'sour head' or anyone who loves cherries! (2,273 characters)

Finally got to crack open this offering from the Preservation Series that I signed up with a friend. Poured out of a 750ml bottle into a teku glass. No freshness or bottling date, although the label in the back states that it's best consumed fresh? Huh? Sours SHOULD have a long shelf life, last time I looked.

Pours a delightfully rustic yet slightly murky and ugly shade of pinkish, tomato juice reddish, brown. Very hazy, and not much clarity or shining qualities that I usually admire in the style. There's an initial fizzy, white head, but it eventually dissipates to about a thin ring which soon vanishes altogether. Not too many legs. No lacing at all. Not horrible, but not too pretty.

The aroma is a slight step up, but is not without its bizzarre elements in midst of the good ones. First, the pros: there's an elegant, mellow fruity flavor that melds well with the oak to create a slightly acidic, soured phenolic quality - although where the cherries are, is beyond me. Rather, I get big citrus notes (almost soapy), apricots, grapefruit, and woody, faded sweetened tannins. Then, there's the ugly: tomato puree, cabbage, and basil immediately vanquishes these flavors in a strange manner, although less horrible than you'd imagine. Why is this happening? And seriously, where's the damn cherries?! I admit I am fascinated with the tomatoey notes, but I really am not looking forward to trying it.

Right, the flavor does take things a step up, although not as much as hoped. There's none of the vegetal notes to be found, and instead, there's an initial burst of soured, dried fruits (especially apricots, definitely raspberries - although no cherries), which soon meld with the wood to turn into a highly acidic yet overall creamy finish. Vinegar and vinous qualities soon follow as well, and eventually turn into a lactic acidic complexity that bittered yet slightly saline in nature. Definitely good in terms of texture, although pretty weak in terms of body, which comes off as thinned and grainy as you'd never expected. Not too much restraint in terms of battling the sour yeastiness and woody tannins - disappointing in feel, and perhaps too much of the cherry skins screwed up whatever they were trying to go for here.

This is a poor way to start off the series, and I'm starting to lose faith in this brewery. Not really the worse wild ale I've had, but I've heard these guys can do better than this. It's drinkable, but many factors I mentioned above do not make this wholly memorable. Not a bad way to start off a meal, but could use some serious pruning, especially if The Bruery is supposed to be composed of barrel aging geniuses, and whatnot. (2,673 characters)
