Notes/Commercial Description:
We debuted Griffon Bruxellois late in 2012 at a few of our events and it was quite a hit. This dark, sour ale was aged in oak barrels on cherries, giving it an incredible fruit flavor, balanced by the roasted malt and lactic tartness. We must admit, this bottle-conditioned beer didn't turn out quite as carbonated as we were hoping for, but it is still an incredible beer, 100% worthy of our high standards to be sold, served, shared and enjoyed!

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Flat brown body. Reddish too. Just a couple bubbles.

Smell - Acetic. Lots of oak and vanilla. Cherry aroma.

Taste - Really sour. Damn. Acetic and vinegary. Still retains some caramel and vanilla. Cherry fruit flavor.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation and over sour. Harsh.

Overall - This is a struggle. Too sour. Unpleasant.

Bottle to Bruery tulip.

A - Dark amber/brown colour. Opaque. Only a few loosely scattered bubbles are present. Carbonation appears to be very low.

S - Acidic tartness with oak and sour cherry aromas and a big bready sweetness.

T - A very sharp sourness hits the tongue right away with an almost vinegar like feel. A big oak flavour and sour cherries show up mid-palate with the bready sweetness and a tartness lingering in the finish.

M - Medium body. Dry. Light carbonation that was much more present than the pour indicated.

A: Stale dirty mudwater with bubbles caught on the inside of my Bruery tulip. No head, no lacing.

S: Aroma of tart cherries, lactose, old used oak barrels and vinegar. Typical Bruery wild ale yeast aromas.

T: Overly tart, too much for my taste. I being a huge sour brown ale fan was immediately disappointed off the bat that the brown ale flavors were nary present. Mostly tasting of grapefruit, sour citrus and vinegar, mixing with green grape flavors. Complexity is not there I do not think. Sour grapefruit flavors, some cherry tartness and a light mouthfeel.

M: Light watery, stinging carbonation when first opened and stale water within a few minutes of opening. I hate being disappointed , this seems to have done the trick.

O: Overall, count me disappointed I was hoping for an Oude brune beer, but this seems to be a darker Oude Tart with more some additional cherry tartness. I guess i will have to compare this to the Cherry oude tart which I hope will have some additional complexities.
