For our first local collaboration beer of 2013, we teamed up with our good friends at Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach, CA. We've worked with these folks on a number of small batch brews, beer dinners and general shenanigans for many years and it was really exciting to sit down and work on a full scale project with them for the first time. What we ended up with is an imperial smoked stout, but of course it wasn't that simple. We smoked our own malt on the same smoker and with the same blend of three different woods that Beachwood uses for their award winning BBQ - apple, white oak and pecan. We then aged the beer on those same three types of wood. The resulting stout is hearty and wonderful, balancing the rich, meaty smokiness with the sweetness of the malt.

Pours black with brown head 3/7", some excellent retention and appearance here. Aroma is practically the most roasted malt you could possibly envision. Is there some smoked wood here too? WE WANT THE SMOKE! Anyways, man there is just a ton of roasted barley and like no adjuncts to this. Just moar malt and moar fire.
Taste, yeah man, roasted malt. How many times can I type that in this review? Its really all about the roasted malt. Hides the alcohol well. Shit, I think they roasted malt that displaced alcohol. Roasty smoke all over this. So much bitterness via roasted malt. Roasted wood, roasted malt. I dunno how much longer I can stretch by belaboring the heavily roasted malt and smoked wood. Break this out for all your cigar and smoke beer friends. Take it camping, it will fit in there. There's a lot of wood and a lot of roasted malt to dive into here, and the depths are quite deep. Bring friends.

L - Look is dark roast coffee black, not sludgy thick and not watery. Head and carbonation are very frothy with a dense 2 finger cappuccino colored head.
S - smell is musty malt, light roast, dark chocolate, sweet cream/half and half sort of aromas are in there. The smoke is peaty and iodine forward like an islay scotch but not intense. Overall a pretty tame smelling smoked stout.
T - oh damn. Campfire woody smoke and bitter dark malt. This reminds me of the first time I had storm king stout with extra smokiness. As it warms the smoke is equal parts peaty and equal parts bacony/campfire/meaty.
F - feel is solid. Nice and rich and not overly carbonated. Its held up quite well over the many years its aged.
O - nice beer. Not life changing but as a smoked beer fanatic it had been on my bucket list and I'm not at all disappointed by it.

750ml bottle poured into a teku
Bottled 2/15/13
Bottle #812/813
A- pours a deep black color with a one-finger khaki head that eventually reduces to a ring around the edge of the glass
S- aroma opens with a nice base of smoked malt, giving notes of dried pork, campfire smoke & some oaky notes. Undertones of chocolate, raisins, bandaids & char
T- smoked malt leads the way, providing notes of campfire smoke, cured ham & char. Mid-palate brings out some chocolate notes, as well as tobacco & anise. The finish brings our dark fruit and lingers of burnt malt and smoke
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns slightly creamy into the finish
O- still plenty of smoke to be found, with some nice chocolate and dark fruit undertones. A solid choice for fans of smoked beers
