Notes/Commercial Description:
For our first local collaboration beer of 2013, we teamed up with our good friends at Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach, CA. We've worked with these folks on a number of small batch brews, beer dinners and general shenanigans for many years and it was really exciting to sit down and work on a full scale project with them for the first time. What we ended up with is an imperial smoked stout, but of course it wasn't that simple. We smoked our own malt on the same smoker and with the same blend of three different woods that Beachwood uses for their award winning BBQ - apple, white oak and pecan. We then aged the beer on those same three types of wood. The resulting stout is hearty and wonderful, balancing the rich, meaty smokiness with the sweetness of the malt.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Thick viscous black body. Small khaki head. Thin collar.

Smell - Smokey. Really nice smoke. Works very well with the sweet caramel malts and roasted malt.

Taste - Smoke blends very well with a sweet chocolate malt. Gets roastier as the smoke abates, yielding a bit of coffee. The smoke declines, but never goes away.

Mouthfeel - Rich with a nice body. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Really good stuff here. Excellent smoke with a nice stout behind it.

Bottled on 2/15/13
Poured into a standard tulip glass.

Appearance: (4.25)
Pours an extremely viscous, impenetrable black with a thick, dark tan 2.5 finger's tall head. The head has great retention and leaves some nice lacing along the edges of the glass as it slowly recedes.

Aroma: (4)
Immediately upon pouring your olfactory senses are filled with rich, smoked malts. Underneath this smokey veneer are some sweet dark fruits; mostly cherry and light plum. Notes of dark chocolate and cocoa powdered are layered underneath the fruit. On the edges of the chocolate is a slightly herbal hop presence. The intense aromatics of smoke start to fade as the beer warms, revealing a deep woodsiness; perhaps oak and cedar? Very little alcohol in the nose.

Taste: (3.75)
Big, deep chocolate upfront with some herbal hops in tow. Behind the initial blast of bittersweet chocolate is a lively smoke presence that really melds well with some of the subtle dark fruit notes. Finishes dry with a very deep wood presence. The wood really imbues the beer with a pleasant graininess from the tannins. The long lingering finish offers nuanced smoke interlaced with chocolate, bitter espresso and a slight herbal hoppiness. For the being 9.5% the alcohol is present, but very well integrated with the flavor profile of the stout.

Mouthfeel: (4)
Thick, viscous and robust with moderate carbonation.

Overall:(4)
The Bruery collaborated with Beachwood brewing earlier this year; they chose to brew an Imperial Smoked Stout, smoked with 3 different types of wood and aged it on three different types of wood. The smokiness is intense when the beer is chilled, but really subsides as the beer warms in it's glass bringing out some rich notes of chocolate and dark fruit. The wood aging is what really adds some nice texture and nuance to the beer though. The beer oddly reminds me of Stone IRS if it had been smoked and aged on wood. Very cool and interesting beer to check out; Recommended.

750 ml capped bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
9.5% ABV, "This beer is suitable for aging up to 2 years."

A - Incredibly sinister looking, Mrs. Stoutfire (incredible name, by the way) pours blacker than most used motor oil and just about as thick, producing a heavy mocha-colored head. Constant swirls arouse more aroma but wash away the thick lacing that clings to the tulip.

S - Thick smoke wafts from this big imperial stout but the blend of wood really gives it a pleasing aromatic experience like smoking meat, not just straight campfire. Bold maltiness supplements the smoke with roasted characteristics of coffee, dark chocolate, and dry mocha with undercurrents of raisin and fig for a seriously inviting dark beer.

T - Voluptuous but somewhat reserved, the oak and smoke influence in flavor is perfect; present, complex, and distinctive but soft and complimentary to the beer's rich malt profile. Mocha, medium roast coffee, and smooth milk chocolate come together for an exquisite chorus of dark malt!

M - Rich and chewy, this full-bodied stout is silky smooth with mild acrid bitterness and dry smoke along the finish for balance that quietly distracts from the sweet malt profile. This is basically a flawless beer when it comes down to it's feel.

O - Mrs. Stoutfire is one seductive stout who's flirtatious smoke aroma and charming chocolaty flavor come together for a bold-but-complex imperial stout that's not smoke-heavy but exceptionally balanced and damn good with BBQ pulled chicken! Without hesitation, it's also one of the best smoke / imperial stouts I've ever come across.
