750ml into a matching Bruery snifter. The brew appears black in color with a dark brown head. Some stringy lace sticks to the glass and a swirl revives. Some dark brown and reddish hue is seen through the edges.
The aroma is smoky and lightly phenolic like plastic. It is kinda similar to the character pete sonetimes imparts. Plenty of roasty chocolate, earth, tobacco, anise and raisins blend with the smokiness.
The taste is bitter and roasty like charred grain. Notes of anise, leather, earth and a solid pete-like smokiness that has some phenolic plastic quality into the aftertaste.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is smooth and decent with the smoke being subtle and enjoyable but the phenolics are not that great. Funny enough, if you focus on the plastic this beer is almost bad...but if you try to ignore it, there are lots of pleasant nuance. As a side note, I think aging this on wood chips hurt the beer by augmenting the harshness.
